Skyrocket screen density?? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

ok so i had the INFUSE, where i would just edit the build prop and change the DPI of the screen....and it worked great. but it does not seem to have the same effect on the skyrocket...i notice alot of dead space on the screen when doing this that was NOT on the infuse. it made things smaller in proper proportion to the screen, on the skyrocket it seems to make the Screen windows smaller and odd looking.
any ideas?

nope doesn't seem like anyone figured this out outside of using a different launcher & dialer.
I switched to go launcher, even though touch wiz seemed to work pretty well. kept the dialer for now.

so if i pic another launcher it will eliminate the dead space at the bottom of the screen?

yes. the dead space is just due to touchwiz being setup just for the one resolution. other launchers are set up to do more as they aren't device specific.
The dialer will still have dead space, you can get go contacts/go dialer if you choose.

Does changing the density this way cause the same problem as using the density changer app on the market? If you change the density with the app it makes most apps on the market imcompatible and will not allow you to download them.

yes it still causes the apps not show up in the market....in which case i switch it back then download and switch back again once it is on my phone.

Can someone tell me the screen density on the stock AT&T ROM?? I changed mine and want to change back for apps, but I can't remember. I've tried like 5 levels and still have apps showing as not compatible.
TIA!

I believe it's 240.

Thanks...!

No prob. I usually have to clear my market cache after I switch back to stock density for the incompatible message to go away.

what is the logic behind the market not working?

[Q] no download link in market

Hey everyone, I want to preface this with apologies if this indeed happens to be an issue previously resolved, i just cannot for the life of me seem to find any info on the subject. This is a big problem for me. For a frame of reference I am running CM7 with Fauxs kernel with the newer looking market update. Dont know when i got this update, just kinda happened, but then you know, i hate it. First of all i cant figure out how to browse all the apps like i used to. In the old market i could browse everything and see if i wanted to mess around with stuff. Now they only show the tops in certain categories or you have to search for it yourself. Hate that. Also, i am having an issue with downloading apps. The little blue download button is just not there on most apps and I am failing to figure out a reason why. some apps have it some dont. some will have it one day and not have it the next. I am really confused and need help. If you know whats wrong with me Id appreciate a hand!
Thanks,
Depressed Android User
Hmmm still having a difficult time seeing what the problem is. The only solution i can think of is to re-flash the latest CM7 Rom along with the latest gapps and make sure to wipe factory data, cache, dalvik, format/system, and fix permissions.
Hope this helps. But when i mess around with my phone too much and do something stupid, this method always works for me. Good luck sir.
I have the exact same problem. Im running GB on my g2x.

sooooo happy im not the only one with this problem, i dont feel like such an idiot anymore. I install clean everytime i install. I wonder what is causing this as some apps have download links while others do not. If anyone wants to try something, look up "sixaxis compatibility" see if you can download and install, that is the latest app to give me the issue

Yup on mine it shows the download button.
Try this. Go to settings, Applications, select Market and clear cache and clear data. After that re-open Market and see what happens.

Some apps has compatibility issues therefore no diwnload link would appear. Try native android lcd densities like 160 or 240 and it should work.

ok changing to 160 to see if that works. By the by, what device uses 160 as native res?
edit: 160 worked for the sixaxis app. crazy how that works. now if i could figure out how to get my status bar to look alright in this 160 format id be stoked hahaha
Edit 2: by the way, hahhaha i went back to 240 just to see what its like, i can barely function! everything is soooo big! at 200 i have fat screen real estate and the icons and such are much more comfortable on my eyes. its nicer to have more line items on the screen too, like in my music apps, more artists and less scrolling. win

[Q] Gingerbread style on Honeycomb

http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/20/...n-gingerbread-interface-enabled-by-h/?m=false
This is old news but I was wondering if anyone got this to work. I really hate the taskbar on honeycomb and usually go without it by using HoneyBar but the obvious drawback is that I have to guess at notifications or bring it back up. I tried it but it would not work for me.
The taskbar wasn't as annoying on the 10.1 but now it just feels downright intrusive to the screen. I tried StatusBar+ but that was even worse than the stock taskbar.
Maybe I'm alone on this...
US Wifi version 16gb stock, no kernals, rooted
Edit: I know I can use ADW or Go Launcher and already do. I just want that 2.x style notification bar back.
yes i believe this works on all honeycomb. just change your lcd denisty. there are apps that can do it or you can manually edit build.prop.
I guessed as much but the video was far too fuzzy to make out which file LCD density is changed from in Root Explorer.
I tried Blade Buddy and LCDDensity from Market to get around that but no dice when set to 170 as in the video. I might have been doing it wrong however. Do you know what value is necessary to switch to the 2.x style?
And thank you for confirming that bit of information. Weird as it sounds I would rather be wrong and dumb than have the option of 2.x style left unopen to me.
Edit: Sorry my bad. Can't read. I'll try editing build.prop immediately. Although I still am unsure as to the optimal value but I will give 170 a twirl again.
Edit: I can't seem to change it. I tried editing build.prop in /system but it told me it was a read only file. So I tried opening it in text editor inside Root Explorer but when I checked afterwards it was still set to 160.
I used LCD density and changed it to 171 (using killall), and it worked for me. I'm using adw ex as my launcher.

I just got it to work but the oddest thing was that I had no notification bar at the top. Talk about a mixture of joy and rage...
Edit: The reason for no notification bar on top was my usage of Go Launcher EX as my default. I will miss using it but it appears stock and ADW EX do have the notification bar enabled so I have no choice but to switch. Thank you both for your help. I really appreciate it.
Edit: Thank you again for all your help but does your notification bar work properly? I can't seem to get Google Talk/Gmail/Email alerts through it. I also cannot open anything in Settings.
Just tested email and i the notification worked.

Thank you for all your help on this. I guess I'll just have to deal with it or try a factory reset and then try again. That might be the best option.

I'm trying LCD Resolution, it says it needs busybox installed.
I go to the market and try to get an installer for busybox, and apparently market is broken for me - I can't download anything from it. Updates work fine, but can't get anything new.
I've been unsuccessful in getting the LCD resolution to change. I tried LCD Resolution with no change (no soft brick though). Also tried modifying the build.prop directly, that resulted in a soft brick.
I resolved my market broken issue (just reinstalled ICS through odin).
Going to try it after my nandroid backup is done. Fingers crossed!
EDIT:
On further thought and some googling, a lot of the LCD density changing apps on the market have disclaimers about it not working on certain devices, or ICS. So I would actually be surprised if the ways of doing it on 2.3.5 will work on 4.0+
EDIT:
Alright, gave it a shot. It won't work. In fact, some of the icons appear larger. Didn't break my phone at all though, just a quick reboot and it was back to normal. I'm going to keep trying different ways.

I haven't been able to get it yet..
I'm hoping that once the custom ROMs start rolling out I'll be able to figure it out. I'm good at getting into those and changing things, but I'm bad at manipulating just my phone.
---------- Post added at 11:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:54 PM ----------
Yeah editing the build file just gave me a soft brick as well.. bummer.
EDIT:
I tried adding a new line to the build.prop - My phone appeared to soft brick, and when I was trying to boot it into CWM it somehow booted up. But nothing had changed. Weird..
Also the apps on the market that claim to work with ICS don't for me.
Also, I heard that the Galaxy S II folks had this weird issue of there being TWO LINES that you needed to change... but from what I could tell (I looked over the file very carefully) there is only that one line.
i got the lcd density to change, use rom toolbox pro and changed it to 200 in the build tweaks section

Ahh, thank you. Saved me! I did not want to revert back to GB, but do not enjoy a senior friendly UI either!
Ok, I tried this and not sure what is going on.
When I do, the icons get smaller, but instead of using all the screen realestate, I have a large section of unused space that I can't do anything with.
What am I missing or what am I doing wrong?
After you've changed the density, you'll want to change the number of columns/rows of your launcher to make use of the extra space.
Awesome! Rooted up my skyrocket on ICS! First root for me on my first android! And just got my skyrocket yesterday!
I changed mine to 200, it's way better this way. I did it through the rom toolbox as suggested.
There is a small lag though going back to the home screen, are you guys experience this as well?
Any suggestions on fixing the dial pad? I've done some searching and it seems most of the fixes aren't for us.. yet.

You change it in your launcher settings. I'd highly recommend Nova launcher. It acts like the AOSP ICS launcher (with the widgets section integrated into the app drawer). By default the desktop space is 4 rows by 4 columns, but you can change this. I'm experimenting with what works for me with a 160 density.

EDIT:
Nevermind, figured it out, it's like the iOS way of creating folders. Just drag and drop 1 app onto another.
Hmm, noticed that the disagree didn't resize either. Can anyone recommend a good dialer?

Changing DPI without root?

Is there anyway possible to change the DPI before we obtain root?
Thanks!
Sent from my HTC6525LVW using Tapatalk
No, you would need to edit build.prop afaik that is the only way. We have root now, but only /system/xbin is writable so I am not sure if you can change dpi, I will test it out.
You always need root regardless of the methods. But you can do it with the root currently available to the m8. Via xposed and app settings.

Probably. Though I don't use that launcher. I notice that launcher is called Blinkfeed. so if you change the DPI of HTC Blinkfeed it will probably effect the launcher.
I use Nova so I just change the DPI of Nova for the same effect. I don't like the limited number of dock spaces in the blinkfeed launcher and I honestly have no use for blinkfeed itself.

Thought you all might like a little more room. This app is amazing! I tested it on 360!!! If you go lower I cant tell you what happens. I tested from 480 all the way to 360 and I have to say 360 works the best!

Did this not change your dialpad? I change dpi manually and anything under stock made the dialer wrong.
Just checked. Ya same here. I don't mind I just have more room on the home screen. I just know this was the best setting for Gallery. If I remember right it did the same to the Dial pad too on my Note 3. That was the only bad thing.
PS Camera is a little smaller too.

Ya seems that AOSP was never struck with this issue, only Touchwiz based roms. I use Nova to get around the homescreen sizing.
Thanks for the share. I will have to give it a try.
I have been using the xposed module app settings. Nice module for anyone who is not familiar. Allows settings for dpi, force full screen, etc on a per app basis which is good I think as some apps I have a different dpi than others.
I agree with your thoughts on 360 for this device.

Hmm that's strange. I will say that the line in my build prop is earlier in, than in the past with other devices. As soon as I start scrolling I'll go though some # signs than it is the second line past them.

No actually at&t s5, maybe thats the issue. Ill try asking around in the att forum.
Hmm wouldn't think that the build props would differ as far as basic device info, but maybe. Defiantly keep info posted here if you figure something out just for our future reference.
Well, just for kicks tried to add the line again and lo and behold it worked lol. So for future reference, if you are missing the lcd density line in your build.prop, adding it to the bottom works.

Just checked. Ya same here. I don't mind I just have more room on the home screen. I just know this was the best setting for Gallery. If I remember right it did the same to the Dial pad too on my Note 3. That was the only bad thing.
PS Camera is a little smaller too.

Messes up the lockscreen too especially if you're using fingerprint for security.
