Carrier IQ issues apology letter to TrevE - General Topics

Earlier this month, egzthunder1 wrote an excellent article here about Carrier IQ cease and desist letter to xda member TrevE about his work on "rootkit" app on mobile phones, asking him to cease and desist all activities and issue a public apology to the company, along with retracting all documents and work thereunder. Lots of xda senior members took up the fight by publicizing the issue, in a bid to help the fellow xda member. The article can be read here:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/carrier-iq-sues-treve/
Three days ago however, Carrier IQ issues a statement apologizing TrevE, which can be read below.
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...r-tries-to-silence-critical-android-dev-1.ars
Hope that TrevE is out of the woods now and wish him the best of luck.

Bit of an old thread (found via Google), but this is a total BS excuse.
They are simply scared of the developer world and how big this community is.
I hope they get taken down, as painfully and shamefully as possible.

I hope someone is working on a full reverse engineering of the actual code (yes, every single instruction).

New Moderator!

Hello folks, my name is conantroutman and I'll be your forum moderator this evening...
Some of you may have noticed that Mr. Clown has been promoted to Senior Moderator, I am here to replace him.
I know I've got some big shoes to fill (pun intended). Clown shoes..... get it?....nevermind.. but I will try to keep on top of things and make sure the forums stay as tidy and organised as possible.
If you have any suggestions on how to improve this little section of XDA then just drop me a PM or leave a post in this thread and I'll see what I can do.
Should you encounter any issues that require moderation then don't hesitate to drop me a PM. Serious issues should be reported using the "Report Post" button at the top right of each post, minor issues (misplaced/duplicate threads, spam etc etc..) should just be reported directly to me via PM.
Enjoy...
Oh yeah, heres a little reminder of the forum rules.......
Forum & Marketplace Rules
FORUM RULES
1. Search before posting.
Use one of our search functions before posting, whether you have a question or something new to share, it's very likely someone already asked that question or shared that news.
2. Member conduct.
2.1 Language: XDA is a worldwide community. As a result what is ‘ok’ to say in your part of the world may not be ok in someone else’s part of the world. Please think about who is reading what you write. Keep in mind that what you think of as acceptable use of language may not be acceptable to others. Conversely, while reading member posts, remember that word you find offensive may not be to the writer. Tolerance is a two way street.
2.2 Nudity: XDA is used by people of all ages, including minors. It's not acceptable to post nude/pornographic imagery, which includes exposure of the male or female genitalia or of female breasts.
2.3 Flaming: XDA was founded as a group of people sharing information about certain mobile phones. Sharing does not involve virtual yelling (flaming) it does involve working together to solve problems in an environment of mutual respect and understanding. Losing your temper and flaming another member, or group of members, is not acceptable behavior.
2.4 Personal attacks, racial, political and/or religious discussions: XDA is a discussion forum about certain mobile phones. Mobile phones are not racial, political, religious or personally offensive, therefore none of these types of discussions are permitted on XDA.
2.5 New Members: Treat new members the way you would have liked to have been treated when you were a new member. Provide the new members with guidance, advice and instruction always with respect and courtesy.
2.6 All members are expected to read and adhere to the XDA rules.
3. Post only using a clear subject and message.
You're most likely to receive a helpful answer to your question if you use a short subject title that describes your problem and a message that explains in detail what your problem is and what you've tried to solve it.
4. Use the English language.
We understand that with all the different nationalities not everyone speaks English well, but please try. If you're really unable to post in English use an online translator, You're free to include your original message in your own language below the English translation.
5. Post a message only once.
As a large forum we don't need unnecessary clutter, You're free to edit your message as you like, so if you do not receive an answer revisit your message and see if you can describe your problem better. Not everyone is online at the same time, it might take a while before you receive an answer.
6. Do not post warez.
If a piece of software requires you to pay to use it, either pay or find your cracks and serials somewhere else. We do not accept warez nor do we permit any member to promote or describe ways in which Warez, cracks, serial codes or other means of avoiding payment, can be obtained.
7. Do not spam.
If you wish to advertise a product, contact us we provide ads. But do not post it in the forums, it will be removed and you're likely to receive a ban.
You are however allowed to sell used goods like your own device, parts of your device or accessories for your device in the marketplace forum, please read the rules there before posting. (This rule includes signatures, if you use a signature it will appear in your post)
8. Donations.
We appreciate all donations to xda-developers.com, it keeps our forum online and well maintained. As a user you're allowed to ask for donations in your signature as a thank you for your hard work. However donations up front are not allowed, this forum is about sharing, not about getting paid to do something, that's what your job is for.
9. Don't get us in trouble.
Don't post copyrighted materials or do other things that will obviously lead to legal trouble. If you wouldn't do it on your own homepage, you probably don't want to do it here either. This does not mean we agree with everything the software piracy lobby try to impose on us, it simply means you cannot break any laws here, since we'll end up dealing with legal hassle caused by you. Please use common sense: respect the forum, its users, and those that write great code.
10. Help others if you can.
If you see posts from others where you can help out, please do. This place exists because people are helping each other, and even if you are relatively new to the matter, there's probably already quite a few people newer than you that would benefit from what you've learned. Don't be shy.
11. Don’t post with the intent on selling something.
As an elaboration to rule number 7, don’t use XDA to advertise your product or service. If you are the proprietor of a for-pay product or service, you may use XDA to get feedback, provide beta access, or offer support on the product, but you may not make any posts with the primary intent of selling. This includes posting press releases, announcements, or links to downloads for trial software. The only exception to this is when you’re posting an exclusive release to XDA.
12. Using the work of others.
If you are developing something that is based on the work of another Member, you MUST first seek their permission, and you must give credit to the member whose work you used. If a dispute occurs about who developed / created a piece of work, first try to settle the matter by private message and NOT in open forum. If this fails then you may contact a moderator with clear evidence that the work was created by you.
Convincing evidence will result in copied work being removed. If there is no clear evidence you created the work then in the spirit of sharing all work will remain posted on the forums.
These rules apply to all software posted on XDA unless that software comes with a license that waives these rules.
Welcome!
I hope you're the aggressive type.

Locking threads

Why is it that the so called MODS in this place would rather lock a thread than to accept the fact they are ****ed in the head! I don't know what the deal is with the MODS here but they need to get their heads out their ass and address the real issues instead of holding a grudge! You are loosing some great people because of your arrogant stupid ass I am god attitude. So I hope to see xda flop on its sorry ass!!!!!!! PEACE OUT!
Agreed.

Well although I think you could've said that in a more tasteful manner (as to not stoop down to their level) I still agree.
Tator's thread regarding dfgas' recognized developer status (or lack thereof) was a pretty calm thread and, aside from a few comments made by other users (which were minor at worst) it was not in violation of any XDA forum rules. It was more importantly though our little Mesmerize (and Showcase) community coming together collectively to show our support for one of our developers. The overwhelming majority agreed that he did deserve recognized developer status. Closing that thread, in my opinion, was about as close as you can get to downright censorship in an attempt to control our opinions here. We have the right to speak our minds and voice our opinions, as long as its within forum rules. If a few members bend or break a rule, then by all means, a moderator can edit his post, but the entire thread should not be closed, especially when we are voicing our support for one of our developers.
Considering...
"[XDA] is and always will be a site for developers, pure and simple. Without them we are nothing, without them there would be no reason for XDA Developers to exist; we should never ever forget that. Without them this place would not be called XDA-Developers but something else, e.g Mobile Phone User Support Services For Ungrateful Nerds. XDA is about developing and is for developers. Any user that recognizes that will gain the most benefit from this site."

I am still very shocked that a thread was closed when its sole purpose was to show our support for one of our developers and to let him know that we were behind him even after he had been denied recognition that he has absolutely earned.
I also believe part of the frustration and anger a lot of us share is regarding the manner in which the thread was locked. jerdog and I do not see eye to eye, he knows that and I know that, and that is what it is, however I will say in the most respectful way that I think telling, basically our sub-forum as a whole, that this manner was not 'our place' to comment on was disrespectful to all of us and a slap in all our faces. Because it is absolutely our place. A developer with no users and no community behind him/her is no more useful than a lone hammer just sitting idle without someone around to manipulate it. A developer needs his users just as much as the users need their developer. Without users, a developer's work is pointless. So to tell us it is not 'our place' to voice our opinion when we believe our developer has been wronged, completely undermines the developer-user relationship and is a extemely poor attitude to display. Especially to refer to our support of dfgas as "whining and complaining" I thought was completely uncalled for.
holy crap, you made an intelligent post :O
haha I completely agree with you on all counts. these guys need to get their act together, the more they act like they did in that thread the less I want to come to this site for anything.
Sent from my MIUI SCH-i500
The reason for the thread's closing boils down to these few points:
The only person who can petition for someone to be recognized as a developer, is THAT DEVELOPER THEMSELVES. That was stated a few times in that thread as well as the PM sent to the applicant when they aren't selected.
Any attempt to drum up support is counter-productive as it's not your place, and only comes across as whining which is reserved for ages 0-2.
That being said, any further attempts to drum up a mob will fall under the rules of XDA and you will be, at the least, infracted - and most likely given a vacation from the site so as to pursue other hobbies. It's the rules - if you don't like them - there are other places you can frequent - you're not being paid to stay here, nor are we (Mods and Admins) paid to put up with it.
This thread is closed. If you have any issues with that, feel free to PM me or any SM.

Re: Disabled U.S Army Veteran Needs You

Re: Disabled U.S Army Veteran Needs You
This is how disabled/able United States Military Veterans are treated not only by their government (not all of them) but by the people who we and our brothers and sisters have not only dedicated/lost/sacrificed our lives, our families wishes hopes and dreams and the list can go on forever.... For something so small as an act of love, "Fighting" For The Greater Good of not only ones nation but for those all over the world, or a simple vision we soldiers and or warrior's, may have. Which is why I posted this where I believed it would be accepted and taken seriously.
I did not mean to offend anyone. Nor did I expect to have my cry for help or rather my voice silenced for something as harmless as another humanbeing asking for help. I really see no difference in what Iv posted to what others have posted as far as help goes. Im not meaning to nor wish this to bring up any painful memories but maybe this must be said.
I will not name drop nor am I disrespecting you in any way. My heart sank when I read what was going on with a fellow XDA, major contributors member of their family. My heart still aches just thinking of it. Donations were appropriate to be asked of by us members/family and in no way demanded. Im going to leave it at that.
Maybe the mods saw the thread created as a joke (which wasn't). Or for whatever reasons Im not aware of just found it unworthy of XDA. Ask Undercover and freskboy what I pm'd them. I asked undercover to pm freakboy what I pm'd him.
JESUS DEATHSTAR look me up on face book.

First off this isn't an American site. It is an international community with members all over the world. The closing of that thread was not in any way disrespectful to members of the American military or their family. That post was in clear violation of the rule below.
13. Advertising and Income Generation
Commercial advertising, advertising referral links, pay per click links and other income generating methods are forbidden. Do not use xda-developers as a means to make money.

Mobiletechvideos by Josh Groce xda member - urgent feedback requested

After trying to help an xda member to get his tablet fixed, we have ended up at Mobiletechvideos started by Josh Groce, who has been a past speaker at XDA events. We have spent the last 1 month trying to get in contact with Mobiletechvideos - anybody we can, anyway we can, email, phone calls etc. There has been no communication. Zero.
Mobiletechvideos was a suggestion of Adam Outler, another trusted member of XDA, and hence we did not do due diligence in making sure of the current status of said company. That fault we now recognize. Adam Outler, when finally contacted, initially could not recall the company, but then remembered Josh and says he will try to contact Josh. But we are waiting....
There are a few threads dealing explicitly with Mobiletechvideos and the recent situation where many have given up on their phones ever coming back, and some trying for 4-5 months. Surprisingly, Josh as "connexion2005" does respond arbitrarily to posts on these threads but has not addressed the many members whose devices are stuck in the limbo of Mobiletechvideos. People have been charged $150 a piece on numerous occasions but have not gotten refunds or action on their devices, or even any feedback.
THIS THREAD IS BEING CREATED IN DESPERATION AFTER TRYING SO MANY VENUES INCLUDING THE ABOVE THREADS.
Remember this: Mobiletechvideos as founded by a former XDA "guru" (????) Is drumming up its business through its connections on xda forums. This needs to be re-examined on all fronts. As a long time user of XDA, I have come to respect my interactions with members purely on trust. While this may seem intuitively naiive, it has never let me down until now. We as users must fight to ensure that XDA remains a "safe" site considering we download our phone software without blinking an eye ! That trust must NOT be betrayed.
We hope that other senior members that recognize the names of the member we cite can put out the message that Mobiletechvideos needs to at least respond to customers if it has any chance of carrying on in a legal fashion.
We are preparing a case to be submitted to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) by Monday as we have no other recourse but to escalate the case and hope some serious official intervention by outside authorities will bring things back on track. We also will sadly have to consider police involvement if possible.
Anybody with any ideas, feedback, knowledge or assistance are please requested to respond.
Thanks.

I'm sorry you are going through these difficulties.
I do not have any direct advice or knowledge of this situation, I just wanted to say that Mobiletechvideos/Josh are not affiliated with XDA, and is a member just as you are. I checked to see if he had spoken at any events and it looks like he spoke at an Android BBQ, which isn't our event. Even if it was, just because a speaker says they are with XDA doesn't necessarily mean we are vouching for them or their business.
Anyway, it sounds like you and others have tried contacting him about this and are not receiving satisfactory answers. Unless he is a member of the BBB there is no point in contacting them as they have no authority. You can try to open a claim in small claims court, which is your best bet - you can try contacting the local police where he is located but really the only thing they can look into is fraud.
This isn't directly related to the running of XDA the site so I will move the thread to an appropriate forum. Again best of luck to you and others affected by this!

Thanks so much for your reply and for your kind words of encouragement. We are exploring all avenues.
I want to also clarify that as a public forum XDA has my highest regard - it is a true example of a altruistic community. I just wish to urge members to continue to be vigilant in reporting known cases of fraud or scamming so others can steer clear of becoming victims.
I would go far as to suggest a separate thread/sub-forum be opened to report such issues - one can easily judge the magnitude of the issue by looking at the number of replies a thread garners, which would highten the risk a particular report poses. Also it gives the both parties in such a dispute to air their issues, such that other readers can judge for themselves the merits of any case. Xda does not have to in any way provide dispute resolution, but just allow a small space for greivances to be discussed and the metits be judged by the individual judgement of users. At least some awareness is built about potential ongoing issues.

Mazda - Final Resolution

As many in the XDA community are aware, Mazda lost his Recognized Developer (RD) title and has been publicly unhappy with that decision. Because he chose to state his grievances in a public thread, we decided that a public thread was the best way to address them.
His complaint has been thoroughly analyzed and discussed within the Developer Committee (DC), among the Senior Moderator body, and with site ownership and administration. The way of removing his title was questionable and we would like to apologize to him that it hasn’t been done in an official way. Even though one of his complaints was that Jerdog “went rogue”, it should be known that Jerdog has been his biggest supporter within the DC throughout his time on XDA. When Mazda was found to have kanged code from Androidhive's "Android Building Free Wallpapers App" guide without credits to create his Papuh wallpaper app, the DC considered removing his RD title immediately. However, Jerdog personally requested he keeps the title at the time out of respect for Mazda’s ongoing contributions. When the committee recently decided that it was time to remove his title, Jerdog, acting as a delegate of the committee and out of the relationship the two had formed, decided to reach out to him through Hangouts as a more personal medium. That was a bad decision. In the future, we will communicate through more official channels.
We also saw that he was unhappy with the “Former Recognized Developer” title. At the time, we decided that the usual “Retired Recognized Developer” title did not apply, but Jerdog thought it would be insulting to change him back to Senior Member. So, out of respect, he made it Former RD. Our apologies for not making that clearer at the time and for going off-policy.
The reason the title was revoked was due to Mazda not upholding the Developer Code of Conduct. The final deciding factor is that, as stated in our minimum requirements, RDs are expected to be active within the community and provide/maintain development projects. Not only was his last on-site development contribution over six months ago, but he was (and still is) actively forbidding other developers from posting official builds of his team’s ROM here. We're still not totally sure of his stance on unofficial builds, but many of the changes we are making to our rules in the next couple weeks will give him (and all developers) much more control over their brands on XDA. RDs are reviewed periodically, and after looking at the above, he wasn’t delivering an expected level of involvement on XDA and so the title was rescinded.
Even though our decision to remove his title still stands, we’ve decided on further consideration to give him the Retired RD title because we recognize the contributions he makes toward the Android community and we respect that. Also, after six months of active, on-site development activity, he is welcome to use our Recognized Developer application to reapply for the RD title. Again, here are the minimum requirements.
We specifically recommend:
Being active by developing on XDA
following forum rules
trying to avoid on and off-site arguments concerning XDA members
resolving the issues politely in private
being reasonable about things
We started the RD program years ago to give a little recognition and a few perks to the developers who were making XDA awesome. The fact that something so simple has caused so much heartache has even made us consider eliminating titles altogether-- but that didn't feel right either. So, we're in a sucky situation, and we're sure many of you are going to find a thousand reasons why this is outrageous. All we can say is we're doing our best. We'll even acknowledge that some of Mazda's loudest pronouncements against the site are in fact leading to positive change. @Mazda has been notified about this thread both by the mention and the private message.
Thank you for taking the time to read this,
eagleeyetom
Leader of the Developer Committee
