Backlight notifications? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys! I've seen this video about the backlight led used as notification led. Is it possible to have it on the Nexus S? I've tried to download the BNL lite app, but it's not working becouse I don't have a BNL mod kernel.
Actually I'm using the last Cyanogen mod for Nexus S. Can someone enight me about this topic?
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure you just need to go to the dev section and look for kernels that say they support BLN, then flash one of them for the app to work...

And kernel makers wanna add in backlight notification mod?

Anybody who makes custom kernels for 2.2 wanna incorporate the BLN mod? Its the one thing that I feel 2.2 needs. Everything is great with the roms and kernels that come out, but that is one thing that is seriously lacking. I feel it needs to be addressed. So....any takers?

source for 2.2 just came out like 24 hours ago...it takes time to integrate mods into kernels..especially when most kernel devs for the fascinate/mesmerize/showcase have to get back into the swing of things after nearly 2 months off since froyo leaked
i didnt mean right away, just for future kernels. I think it would be a good thing to have.
+1 for this, NoLED is nice but unfortunately locks up my phone from time to time. Once again no rush devs, just showing interest.
I had it for 2.1 and I thought it was the best app ever. Its good to look at your phone from a distance and know you have a email/text/missed call.
yup i miss the notification light of my EVO.
if the home or search button came on when there was a notification that would be cool.
i dont think there is a hidden notification led on the phone is there?

Nope, just the soft-key back-lights unfortunately. It sounds like a neat feature, hopefully someone will bring it about.
The fascinate ROM's are exactly compatible with our system (if it's built on a voodoo kernel, then our voodoo kernel would most likely run it, don't ever run a different model's kernel/radio obviously) so if they do any work on it we could easily port it.
Bln worked with the 2.1 voodoo kernel (JT's, iirc). It's one of the few things I miss...

Noled works really for notifications too. Free from market plus it has specific icons for sms email missed calls etc I use it and love it
Noled isn't bad, don't get me wrong. I simply prefer bln

To be honest I've never tried bln so I must just be biased. A small led wouldve been nice tho...only thing I miss about my old crack berry
jt has already added the mod into the 2.2 source so don't worry, it will be there.
thats what i'm talking about! Progress already! Let it continue and we will have it in no time.

Yep, and his kernel was built Generic , I have it running on my mes with EC10 pick and pack - it works flawlessly so far
It would be cool if we could assign different buttons for different things, like SMS lights up the search button, email the back button, etc.

Actually, I am talking about the kernel he is building from the EC10 source drop. In fact, it looks like he's already released it between now and when I wrote that last post. It has the works: BLN, Voodoo Sound, Voodoo Lagfix, Undervolted, It has network speed increases, an interactive cpu governer, and more that he doesn't even mention.

Yes would definitely love to have this! Very useful... Is any of our talented developers listening?
What is Back Light Notification? how does it work?
BLN lets you use the leds of the menu/back keys as notification leds so they turn on when, well, there's a notification.
BLN is made of two parts: a kernel patch and a user space app to control it. Apparently nobody has ported the kernel patch yet.
BLN is so sincerely needed..
Thanks for bringing this up!!!!
I had made a post in this section for the same but unfortunately it was transferred to the i9000 section...it is a a very very useful utility its needed as this phone has no notification led or anything and the button back light can be very successfully be used for the same purpose..missed calls email sms......
There are some apps like led me know for the same but dot seem to work on the gingerbread firmware and it still has some bugs and issues..
A BLN mod kernel would be the best .. Only hitch being someone has to develop it..!!
Looking forward to this very small but extremely useful addition to this phone..
+1 lyk dis mod

I can confirm NoLED works great on the skyrocket.
wow seriously? do ANY phones do RGB led notifications anymore? I was going to return my HTC vivid because of the bootloader bit, and came over here to check out the skyrocket. But LED notification is a must have.

motorola has a broad spectrum of colors on their LED notifications. i loved LightFlow on my atrix/atrix2. every notification had a different color
Yeah it seems Sammy has moved away from this lil feature. Its not there on the SR or the Infuse last I checked.
I actually went away from NO-LED. Works great but I hated having to click the home button and than swiping the screen.
On my original GS I used some custom ROM's and most of them included the ability light up the buttons on the bottom of the phone if there was a notification. I am not interested in using custom ROM's on this phone but I wonder if there is a way to do the same on a stock ROM?

Doubt it, would be nice though. I miss having a notification indicator.
I use blinky for notifications. It's not an LED light but lights up the capacitive buttons when I have something waiting.
I'm on a stock rom, but rooted and run da_G kernel. I don't know if it'd work without the custom kernel.

From what I understand it won't work without a kernel that supports it. So I also rooted and installed da_G's kernel. Than installed BLN from the market. Loving my notifications lights.

LED buttons

I've flashed a lot of roms on my phone and on most of them led buttons (home, back, search... at the bottom of the phone doesnt light up when you navigate through phone...can someone tell me why is this so and if you can fix it somehow by your own?
Sorry if this thread is already up, i havent seen it...
They aren't meant to light up in normal use. They are only meant to light up when the room is dark.

Can you tell us what is your current ROM please?
I had the same problem in CyanogenMod9, when I turned off the autobrightness. Somebody tells that it's because of sweep2wake function. By the way, when brightness is auto - everything works fine.
As far as i remember, on stock rom, those buttons always lighted up, and on my last 3 roms now they never did. I'm currently using Primos-s, but before i had Runny sense 3.5 rom, and didn't work too. i find this thing very annoying because i have to blind guess everytime... I have auto-brightness turned on, and still these buttons neve rlight up, even in dark.
In some Roms like Endymion which I use there's a tweak for the brightness at which the buttons light up. In stock they only lit up in complete darkness. Hopefully it works the same in Fallout ..
Tapa2 desire s
I'd be very happy if they light up only in darkness, but now they never do...hopefully, on the next rom i'll use they will work

As mentioned above, some ROMs have implemented tweaks so they will only light up in very dark conditions. In my opinion, this is even better.
Try another ROM.

[Q] Backlight Button Notification

Hi all,
I know on other Phones it is possible to tweak so the backlight of the buttons will light up at a notification. So I was wondering if it was ported to the sensation?
Thanks
Not that I'm aware of, but it definitely sounds like a cool feature. I'd use that!
i think that feature would be supported by kernel
i can't think another way
using an app... i am not so sure
by the way it would be a cool feature:good:
yeah, I'm also thinking of a modified s2w or something..
But thanks for the answers, although there isn't something like this ):
