[Q] AOSP VS Sense - HTC Sensation

I've noticed battery life while using AOSP is not as good as when using a rom with sense. Why is that? I've tried different kernels with AOSP and tried different governors to no avail.
Thanks

well... that turned the world up-side down . it should be other way around. could you give more info about the aosp and sense roms? and radio/kernels? im very curious to see what sense rom has a greater battery life than an aosp.

my guess is development is a bit ahead with sense roms. aosp (CM7 and MIUI) still quite early.
but no way i'm staying on ugly ass sense. lol

I've doubled my battery time. Using cyanogen ...

Yeah, should be the other way round. Since Sense is a heavier UI.
Did u flash the rom at full battery charge?

[Q] Buying an Inspire when it's back in stock..

So I'll be coming from a S***sung Craptivate after it killed its own memory, resulting in not having enough room to load a back-up or a fresh ROM after a full wipe. (Phone is actually in two pieces, divided straight across the center) I had the phone flashed with a rooted deodexed and lagfixed ROM (Paragon RC6) and undervolted and stock clock speed (1ghz). I also had a different launcher, text based icons, widgetlocker, basically nothing was "stock" about it, but that was out of need, to fix the shutdown problem, the crappy GPS, the crappy sound, the crappy speed, the crappy lag.. etc etc..
I will be buying a Desire when it is back in stock locally, hopefully with tomorrow's shipment. But I have a few questions...
How much different is everything about modding this phone? I've read the guides and the stickies, and liking the Ingersol ROM (with just a battery notification mod, would like it to be white and turn red below 15% instead of the crazy colors it does.)
I only have 3 questions really... but one or more may become more. Please bare with me.
1. It looks like to root I'd have to DOWNGRADE.. what does this downgrade affect, or is an up-to-date version flashed after the root?
2. Can anybody tell me what HTC Sense is all about? Is it the launcher? It seems like a combination of apps already out there but from HTC (Flip to silence for example). What do I lose by going with a non-sense ROM? Also I take it using Desire based ROMs don't use Sense? But why would people want to use a ROM based off a different phone altogether?
3. Gingerbread ROMs (CM7 and the like) were buggier than all hell on the Captivate. Sure it looked good (but that's theming) and was supposed to be fast, but all over the Craptivate develpment forums was posts about widgets/apps not working, not refreshing, or force closing constantly with 2.3.3. A lot of the phones functionality was lost too, like the ability to take pictures, or use it for social networking (Facebook not working..). How do the 2.3.3 ROMs take to the Inspire?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advanced!
You need to downgrade to get unknown sources back. HTC sense is basically a theme that designed for there phone if I'm not mistaking. The gingerbread themes here are very smooth and good. You will encounter bugs but that will always be fix from the developers

It only enables the exploit to get S-OFF (think recovery 2e from the Captivate, vs 3e which required signed update.zip's). Once done, you don't have to worry about it again. There are plenty of stock based ROM's like TPC or dilligaf for you to choose from if you so desire.

Sense is more than the launcher, it is a complete rework of the Android framework, like TouchWiz, but nowhere near as craptacular. It is actually useful. Any HTC sourced ROM will originally have Sense in it, but some HTC ROM's that say "no-sense" have a good chunk of that removed and are more like AOSP Android, but not quite all the way. Then there are other ROM's like CyanogenMod, which are based on actual Google AOSP code and have NO HTC software in them. It really is your choice which to use. I tend to flip between them. My personal favorites are CM7 and RCMixHD 5.9.4. I would flash them both to see what your preference is.

They work perfectly, with only the minorest of troubles that tend to be app specific, like the Gmail word wrap issue(which is not even a big deal at all). I haven't used a Froyo ROM in weeks.
And finally, welcome from another former Craptivate user! You will be MUCH happier with this phone.
Thanks!
In terms of stability, "snappiness" (at 1ghz clock speed), and resource consumption/management, is there a noticeable difference between Sense based, and AOSP based ROMs?
I'm also looking for decent battery life. I understand that screen on time and brightness, along with reception are the biggest consumers, but do one of the above based ROMs seem to do a better job of managing power consumption?
I am pretty weary of flashing a GB ROM just because of the numerous compatibility issues that I witnessed on the craptivate forum..
On the RCmix ROM, does it come overclocked by default? It says to use SetCPU to adjust it, so I'm assuming it runs at 1.0 ghz right off the flash? That ROM along with the theme with the white notification bar icons seems to be what I'll be flashing first. Thanks for the helpful information thus far!

The only thing about sense that really eats battery is the constant data usage of the HTC sense account, if you don't set up an account, your battery life should be rather good. As far as the gb roms they are all working very well, and you will find a small bug here and there, but all the major roms are very good daily drivers.
Most of the roms here have numorous tweaks for stability and snappiness, and you would probably be pleased with any of the major ones. I would say there is more difference between stock sense and tweaked sense than tweaked sense and no sense as far as performance goes. I ran stock for all of a few hours when I got this phone, and have been on a few roms with and without sense, and all of them have been very snappy and smooth.
Any of the major roms that support clock speed adjustments will use setcpu to adjust it, you can run at basically any speed setcpu lets you(within reason, and check the rom post for exceptions and recomendations) I currently run at a maximum of 1.5ghz on miui and my battery life is just as good as it was running 1.2ghz on android revolution.
And last but not least, don't be afraid of gingerbread here, most major bugs have been worked out and 90% of the problems posted about are due to the installer, not the rom.
Welcome aboard!

Just an add on note:
Gingerbread sense ROMs do not have overclocking right now. But really they are so butter smooth especially when compared to a captivate. RCMix5.9.3 has no compatibility issues I have found.

Yep they are GB. There is also Ultimate Droid, which I am using now. This is the best ROM I have used so far, but all of them have been rock solid as far as performance goes. I don't think you will find a bad ROM on here. You will recognize some of the devs from the captivate forums.
As for my battery life. I have been unplugged for just over 15hrs and I am down to 21%. That is with 2 push email accounts, 3 hours streaming rhapsody, 2 hours mp3 music, 30 mins of calls, and about 1 hour of browsing/gaming. It also helps that I am on wifi for 90% of the day.

Are there any benefits of going with the GB version of RCmix versus the Froyo version? Basically I don't feel comfortable flashing an OS not designed for the device so I'm leaning towards the Froyo based version of that ROM.

Yea, the UD ROM is really good. I've been on it for the past week or so and it is running like a champ. Making it really hard to switch to something else.

just because there are several kinds of this thread already going, but i suppose its pertinant, considering how many new roms are available now, and how many ppl have posted so far
I prefer the stock look over any themed ROM. Especially on the P3D. That neon theme is a love it hate it type of thing. Me, I wanna have full control on what I want on my phone rather than habing it themed for me. Same as with the font used on the ROM. Anyways, I'm running the beta 2.3.5 by baad with faux kernel and it's really fast and smooth. Also, I've tried every other ROM on the sensation and so far the stock based, meaning the untouched but deodexed or odex are the fastest and smoothest.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using xda premium
I have tried most of the ROMs and ended up staying with Energy. It is close to stock but themed just enough to be perfect, and I have never had any problems with it. It gets the best battery life, it's very quick and stable, and best of all the dev is on top of it, any found bug will be fixed instantly.

What was faster for you? CoreDroid or P3D? I'm on CoreDroid 2.3 right now and I love the theme, but I feel like it still isn't the quickest ROM and I'm getting in the mood to try a different ROM (CoreDroid has basically been the only ROM I've tried). If P3D is indeed faster I'll try it out since it has its own nice theme.

AOSP, CM9, AOKP When they will be perfect?

What do you think? Right now I am using ARHD + AOSP Script and I am really happy but from long time I want to try an AOSP rom. For now the thing that is holding me back that they have some known bugs and probably more unkown or too little too be mentioned but annoying. I am waiting for a long time but I am still not convinced that these roms are perfect and I want bugless rom and for now ARHD is giving me this. What do you when AOSP will be flawless will it happen?

Yes sense is stable...but aosp or aokp perform just as good or better then sense. Hyperaokp I dont use Bluetooth or GPS so I rarely get bugs.
Benefit of sense? Doesnt overheat quickly,
Battery life as well
AOSP still hasnt figured out the way htc handles the 2 cores, where one core is used until 2nd needed.
AOSP kernels have progressed to as where it uses a single core when the screen is off, but both cores are on wwhen screen is on, resulting in lots of heat and short battery life

Do not agree, AOSP ROMs are still full of bugs, so the devs could not concentrate on performance so much.
But if the bugs are solved I am sure sou can get a good battery life with them as well.
Without making my ROM good, trickdroid with virtuous kernel v06 is brilliant
I've used both AOSP and sense based roms (Trickdroid, Energy, etc.) and really haven't noticed too much of a difference in battery life using stock the kernel. AOSP roms are quicker than the Sense-based roms, however with Sense removed... it's just as quick.
If you throw a custom kernel on the sense-based roms, they easily win out. As Torxx said, AOSP roms are still in alpha and the devs are still working on getting a stable release. Once they get the bugs worked out... I'm sure the AOSP roms will again be just as good, if not better.
Thanks guys for your suggestions.
I'm looking more for Roms with nearly everything working so, aosp and cm are a no go for me right now.
I suppose I'll give the trickdroid with the virtuous kernel a shot.
As for miui, I will also but I'm not a BIG fan of miui.
The sense stock sense is working for me though.
I just don't like the "no exteneded power button menu" on trickdroid like EnergyROM has. I like to take screenshots just by holding the power button and pressing it.

Was going to say the same. the latest CM9 build i tried was actually quite good.. but the camera and all the little bugs (nothing too major, just annoyances really) are what drive me back to a sense base.... The camera on any AOSP based rom is DISMAL compared to what we get with sense. Even the picture quality is not the same. I honestly couldn't BELIEVE how much a difference the software made!!
I have tried all the Sense roms and every update that comes out, well... cause i have a problem, BUT i can say, that at least for me (in the US on Tmobile) the TrickDroid rom is hands down the best IMO. I can actually clock my cpu DOWN and it still flies, i get RIDICULOUS battery life (day and a half with moderate use).
I would say give that a shot OP but DEFINITELY flash the tweaks package!!! Pretty awesome options in there!!

I was on the galaxy s2/3 forums and I found alot of slim and basic roms, aka slimics and slimbean. I'm very interested in getting a Rom that could potentially be 60mb, or maybe 70mb due to our qHd display. What would it take to begin porting or building one from source?

i made 1 that was 320mb,i could have made it 150mb less, but that would have been pointless, there is only so little u should remove from a rom unfortunately

But it's amazing how these guys on the galaxy series and even the hox have managed to get roms so small.

I understand how bloated sense is, and every single rom I'm talking about is aosp based.
Nothing? Nobody has any experience with this stuff?

Take a look at the hypernonsense threads. They are pretty small. That was 1 of the main goals of the original dev to get those Rom fingerprints as small ad possible.

And most of that size reduction is just stripping out apps so the user can add only what he or she wants to to.
Hyper NonSense also stripped out Rosie and all most Sense UI framework, essentially leaving it as a defacto AOSP rom (even though it was still Sense at it's core) That removed a good amount of size, but the bulk of the small size was that it came with just the bare essentialls for it to boot. If you wanted SMS, you had to add the SMS app you wanted. Etc etc etc
That said, it worked great. I loved that ROM for several months.
Check codename Lungo. I have not tried it but probably is what you are looking for http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1930403.
codename Lungo does look pretty good. ill have to try it.

Hi,
I use Codename Lungo since very recently. I like it so far. I enjoy the fact that you can chose your own apps via packages.
Any other light ROMS? I'm mainly looking for battery life and not too much gimmik.
Best ROM
The best and lightest rom I ever used and belive me i tried them all it's hypernonsense. It keeps the good sense camera , it's light, I ususaly have 300 MB RAM free, the battery life it's the best.I usualy get 2 days with 3,6-4 hrs of sceen time.
My settings are :2G only , minimum brightness , data disabled, wifi off when phone is sleeping , autosync every 30 min.
I liked albino's and bruce ROM too but there are still bug's , and MHL isn't working.
Worst ROM's for performance and battery were Sense 4.x ROM's but i liked the interface and customizations.
Sense 3.6 are a little lighter but still eat the battery and slow the phone.
Hypernonsense just flyes and has all the features.
