[REQ] [ICS] [APP] Sync Facebook Photos (only) with Android Contacts - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

NS4G Running ICS kwiboo (sp?) Version 2, Franco kernel
I have about 300 contacts, and probably 150 are friends on Facebook. I don't ever want to sync Facebook contacts with my Google contacts, BUT, would like to selectively sync decent Res photos from Facebook to some Google contacts.
I've seen a couple of apps that might do this, but looking for recomendations. ..especially since ICS really pimps up the contact photos. And low Res photos look awful.

fsync
Just started using fsync. It seems pretty good so far. Can sync photos etc...

are you running ICS?

Haven't tried it on ICS but on gingerbread this app works great:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nloko.android.syncmypix
Just tweak the settings to your liking.

Syncmypix is a gr8 application to do it.
It attaches HighRes pics to phone contacts ...
Well try that on it works on ICS

syncmypix is the best i could find for this use.

does the high res bit work, i ticked the box, but still look crap when you go to the people bit

Another vote for syncmypix. Works pretty well.

They all do nothing on ICS, they still look like sh** on ICS.
Only way to have hires picture is to take picture and use on contact, or transfer from PC to Nexus then one by one.
I dont see another less paintfull solution, maybe on official ICS will be better.

Ya, that's basically what I'm doing now.. have a dropbox folder called contactPhotos. Save there then attach. Worst method ever
. . NS4G . . CM7 . .

I've tried syncmypix and it didn't seem like there was any way to manually sync contacts whose names didn't match up perfectly. So my current solution is this:
I sync my Mac address book with facebook via AddressBookSync, and then I sync my address book with my google account (I've got lion so syncing is built in)

I think this might just be what you guys need

Is that link correct?
Lol. The suspense is killing me.

Can you fix that broken link?

Devs have figured out re enabling it. So why can't no one tell us how to enable it or make an update package for us
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App

HaxSync is the best solution that I've tried! Sync the pictures and all the fb status! It has improved a lot with the last update few weeks ago!

Hows the picture quality..
and damn, I really don't care about anyone's status

It's hi-res photo Of course, then it sync to gmail at the standard 96*96... But that's a gmail-contacts "problem"!

Does it have controls to only sync fb contact photos that ate existing Google contacts?
Im just making sure cuz its a disaster when it syncs everything based on assumptions. Last time, my gf's info got synched with another girl's photo ..as well as 30 others .. last thing I need lol.

Yes, it can sync only contacts that it's sure that are in your "people". The one that it didn't sync, you can anyway force him to download selectively some contacts (is a new feauture of the latest version) and so then associate with you google account contacts!

Facebook contact picture sync

One of my biggest issues with going to a nonsense Rom(cm6nightly) was the fact that it didn't sync well with Facebook contact profiles. (at least I didn't see or I'm doing something wrong)
But nonetheless, I found an awesome app called "syncmypix".
Check it out. It works great.
Heh? Mine synced everything just fine. It even paired facebook contacts with google contacts. What rom are you running?
Sync my pic didn't work for me, it actually caused my phone problems.
I am running Nightly 29 and I am also having a problem with facebook sync. It syncs, but then facebook craps out and I have to uninstall and reinstall to get the pics back. They don't last long though.
I need to search for a new solution...
Check out the hacked Facebook.apk topic. Searching is fun!

That hacked .apk doesn't sync facebook contact pics though does it? I thought it only synced contact info, which no you do not need syncmypix for. I am using the app with CM6 RC1 at the moment and it has worked great for me. Now of course we have Sense on 2.2 so this may no longer be needed unless you run AOSP like CM6.
The hacked facebook sync or rather allow you to use facebook pix just fine. Although you have to do a little work like manually pick the pics when edit the contact info.

Facebook For Android user picture sync issues?

For starters I'm on an HTC Thunderbolt running Android 2.2.
I prefer Facebook For Android over the HTC version, and I'm hoping I can get this sorted out.
I can get my contacts to sync, even if I have to do it manually. However, I'm not sure how to get it to sync correctly for me. For example, when I'm sending texts it shows their picture for each of their texts, but for my picture in the conversation it's just one of those default silhouettes, rather than using my facebook picture.
Any fix for this?
Maybe you could try option "Always sync with facebook" or you could also use
SyncMyPix (App on Market). This will do the job for ya!
not sure how you can possibly like the facebook app better than htc's offering...it doesnt work lol...ive had the same problem you have on like 7 different non-sense roms...and i keep coming back b/c of the integration ...havent tried syncmypix though..sounds interesting
all i know is the picture doesn't automatically sync, you have to attach your pic in the people view to attach your facebook picture
Thanks for the assistance everyone. I caved and I'm just using the HTC Facebook solely for syncing contacts, as it does it fantastically.
Now if only the Facebook for Android had working push notifications.....
yeah, you have to either use the HTC facebook to get your pic to show or make a contact of yourself. I had read it had to be named "ME" but I named mine my full name and I think I did a nickname of "ME". HTC does really have the best facebook sync abilities, one of the few things I miss about SenseUI..
well I tried syncmypix and it works like a charm...so give that a shot if you really are against using friendstream

Exporting AND SYNCING contacts stored on phone to google

I've contacts that are stored on the 'Phone'. Is there some way to copy AND SYNC them in future with Google And Microsoft Exchange Activesync(Hotmail) ? Is there any app which does this ?
Any help guys ? Of late , xda doesn't seem to be providing me with some useful solutions :-(
And here we are , bumping once more.
Hi looks like you need help.
Well, I'd say there's not much in terms of apps that I know of that can do this all in one go (if anyone finds one, post it? If i find one, ill post it too), but I do know of a pretty simple way to do it:
1.) Using the built-in Contacts app or whatever other app that you want, export the CVS/vCard file of your current address book for your phone into your SD card.
2.) From here, upload it to your Gmail by either throwing the file into your computer and loading the file from your harddrive to their servers, or just do it through the mobile browser (if you have problems with the mobile website since I haven't tried this myself, try using Dolphin Browser HD definitely a great app)
3.) Viola! Everything should be synced and in order
It's true that this is not a one-click solution to your problem. There is one for HTC phones built into their ROM, but it has a bug which prevents syncing if you have the birthday field filled out or something like that. If you could tell me what phone it is, maybe I can help a bit more. In the meanwhile, I'll look for some apps. If you could make do with this for now, you should be good to go (though 3 clicks isn't really all that bad )
-EDIT- Forgot to mention, you can also use that CVS/vCard file and easily just dump it into Outlook. Another 2 clicks, but it ain't so bad now, is it?
-EDIT2- Well, after a few more searches, it seems that Google is supposed to auto sync contacts 2-way on all phones with their gmail accounts associated with the device. I don't know if they apply to contacts you've gotten through Facebook, but it does seem to work for the most part. As for the ActiveExchange thingy, I think this app might suffice if you're willing to shell out a small bit of money: http://www.androidtapp.com/exchange-by-touchdown/ Didn't test the app myself, so ask around first and read up on it (Google ).
If you're willing to shell out a good amount of money (hefty 25 buckaroos), here's a supposedly good app: http://www.tgdaily.com/mobility-fea...-of-corporate-exchange-contacts-and-calendars
IMHO, if i were you, I would just stick to the whole 5 step process. Not sure if the ActiveExchange can accept vCards/CVS (never had to use it), but you save yourself 25 or so bucks. But, that's just my two cents on it. Your choice

Hey thanks for your help first off
I've a HTC Legend.
Ok , I get your point. If I sync it with GMail , will ALL the alternate contact numbers , group info , Facebook Profile pics , their birth dates be synced ?

You have an HTC phone, so the contacts and stuff SHOULD be synced with your HTC account/google account too. Just in case, I'd double-check right now.
As for if it will back up ALL that stuff, the answer is yes. This is because vCards and CVS are able to handle various amount of data, so it should also be recognize by Google, at the very least (but its standard so it should also work with Outlook/whatever other program). The only thing that won't be synced is the facebook pictures only because they can change, but if you were to add your facebook account to your phone, it will automatically take care of this, so you shouldn't have to worry about it.
As usual, if you're willing to shell out a bit of cash, here's a solution to your FB photo problem. Hope everything works out for you

I will not be using Outlook , firstly. No , the contacts are not synced with the GMail (Google Account). I am under the presumption that only contacts SAVED on Google Account can be synced. Since they are saved on the phone memory ... I don;t know. But please enlighten me.

Okay, well, if you check it out here, you'll find the thing you might need for the corporate sync since you're not using Outlook (my bad. like i said, don't use it too much) and if this link doesn't work, you might need an update then.
As for the Google sync problem, I did a bit of researching. Apparently, its 2-way syncing, but like you probably noticed, it's not doing so hot. After fooling around for a bit, I finally got it to work pretty well. Apparently, you need a couple of conditions set in place in order for it to work nicely:
1.) Have the GMail app and set it to use your default email
2.) Make sure that under Accounts > [email protected] settings, you check sync next to Contacts (and if it still doesn't work, then try also syncing GMail.)
3.) If your phone has a Battery Manager (mine does) make sure that the setting you choose does not put restrictions on sync! (if it does, then you'll see a lag between syncs. For me, it was 15 minutes)
Thanks to Darth_Penguin for the first two tips.
Last but not least, the strangest thing I've encountered yet: Export your phone contact's list and import it into Gmail at LEAST once. Here's the reason why:
It seems that Google is syncing your contacts that you make. It works very well and doesn't seem to have a hitch pulling stuff that you have on your contacts book. However, there's a flaw: it doesn't play so nicely with Facebook. Most of us have Facebook synced onto our devices and we forget about that. It's true most of our contacts aren't in our gmail, but that's because we never had all of those FB friends names in our gmail either. That's why it seems it's not syncing right. if you want it to, I would suggest this: Import your entire contacts into your SD card through the menu button in your Contacts program, then export it out. Sync that file with Gmail, and you should be good to go. Sometimes, we sync it to Facebook, but it doesn't mean it'll sync to Gmail. Haven't tested out whether or not you'll end up with doubles, but i'll update if i get a chance (planning out beach day!) =D let me know how it goes for you (but that should work. In the odd chance it doesn't, at least we've tried something)
Good luck!

Ok, the top most segment does not work. I have tried the last para. Here's what I did,
1. I imported the contacts to my gmail account by the vcf file.
2. All my contacts have come up but not their profile pic
3. Now what ? I did'nt understand this segment.
" Sync that file with Gmail, and you should be good to go. Sometimes, we sync it to Facebook, but it doesn't mean it'll sync to Gmail. Haven't tested out whether or not you'll end up with doubles, but i'll update if i get a chance (planning out beach day!) =D let me know how it goes for you (but that should work. ALSO, now if I want to 'sync' do I always have to do this way of exporting the vcf file ?
Okay the reason why you don't have the profile pics are because those don't get saved into the vcf files. Only textual data. The pictures came from facebook and unless you use an app or program or service, you can only get the pictures synced to your contacts by syncing with facebook. And as for the loading the vcf, you only need to do this once to sync all contacts from across all your services (facebook, gmail, etc.). So long as you only add contacts through your contacts app, you should have no problems with your gmail.
however, do note that if another third party app/service syncs in a new contact for you (e.g. Facebook), it will NOT sync with gmail as they don't support third party companies. If it's a problem, either sync your device with your third party company (e.g. Facebook) our just do the vcf trick I taught you every once in a while to synchronize all your services/contacts

Blurry Contact Pictures Discussion

What is everybody doing as a workaround for the blurry contact pictures problem that results from syncing your contacts with gmail?
Sense does a pretty good job of masking the problem in some versions, but it's terrible in AOSP ICS.
Are you all just putting up with it or have you disabled contact syncing with gmail or employed another workaround? I'm curious how everybody is solving this problem for themselves.

When you sync your contacts with gmail tho, doesn't it compress them and make them pixelated? Or does Haxsync bypass this somehow?
I just put up with it. I used to sync with syncmypix then disable the Google sync, but then I decided that having my contacts backed up was more important than having nice pics.
Curious to see if anyone has a good solution to this.
Been using haxsync now for the last 24 hours or so. It seems to work around the gmail sync problem. My pictures are significantly higher quality now, though they could still be clearer.
HTC broke the contact photos in ICS. I use Haxsync too.

It's a server side thing, the only possible 'fix' is if the Gmail team bumps up the contact resolution. The resolution was bumped up in Jellybean but it only works offline, so once you sync then you're back to low res crap.
I just deal with it though, can't be bothered to do something that should have been done in by Google in the first place.

Well that's a bummer. Oh well.
I remember reading somewhere that if you upload your contact pics directly to your Google account via web browser on a PC, the contact pictures come out clear on your phone.
But honestly who could be bothered to do that? Obviously not me since I can't confirm that this workaround actually works.

I tried that once and it doesn't make a difference, they will still blur as soon as you sync

I always use an app called HD Contact Photos, and donated a buck for the extras, it lets you use higher quality photos,up to i believe 512x512 ie Stock Photos for stock ICS and if you are using HTC, you can download Facebook and/or Twitter pics and those will be higher quality, as HTC did somehow break HQ FB pics in ICS
i keep high quality contacts on my SD Card and manually link them. They stay clear and perfect even with Google Syncing.. Though new ROM = lose them and have to do it again...
looking for a way to back them up.

[Q] Facebook Photo Contact Syncing

One of my favorite features was being able to sync my contacts from Facebook to my phone in Jellybean so that all of my contacts used their Facebook photo for my contacts on my phone.
Either I am not seeing how to do that in Android 4.4 or that feature was removed.
My Facebook account is synced to my phone and when I go to it under accounts in my settings, it doesn't have anything in there.
Can someone point out how to do this?
That was never part of Jellybean! You must come from an device with UI like touchwiz or sense..

I guess I had just assumed that was how all android phones were. Dang.
So does anyone know any way to do this then? Maybe a 3rd party app or something?

Download the app Sync.Me. I've been using it for a while now and it seems to do a pretty good job at syncing Facebook contact pictures. Can also do LinkedIn, if you have one.
Ubersync works well and you can choose the quality
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ro.weednet.contactssync
As I don't know the name but only that it exists, you can google for it as good as i could.
So check it out yourself. There are some apps who can do what you want ! (ofc not as good as it is implemented in sense)
Download Haxsync - best app there is for syncing contact timeline information and photos
I'm gonna give Sync.ME a try. Thanks everyone!
