[Q] Facebook Photo Contact Syncing - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

One of my favorite features was being able to sync my contacts from Facebook to my phone in Jellybean so that all of my contacts used their Facebook photo for my contacts on my phone.
Either I am not seeing how to do that in Android 4.4 or that feature was removed.
My Facebook account is synced to my phone and when I go to it under accounts in my settings, it doesn't have anything in there.
Can someone point out how to do this?

That was never part of Jellybean! You must come from an device with UI like touchwiz or sense..

Wow. Yeah, i had an HTC One X+. Sad face.
I guess I had just assumed that was how all android phones were. Dang.
So does anyone know any way to do this then? Maybe a 3rd party app or something?

Download the app Sync.Me. I've been using it for a while now and it seems to do a pretty good job at syncing Facebook contact pictures. Can also do LinkedIn, if you have one.

Ubersync works well and you can choose the quality
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ro.weednet.contactssync

As I don't know the name but only that it exists, you can google for it as good as i could.
So check it out yourself. There are some apps who can do what you want ! (ofc not as good as it is implemented in sense)

Download Haxsync - best app there is for syncing contact timeline information and photos

I'm gonna give Sync.ME a try. Thanks everyone!

Contacts & CM7

Yesterday I finally rooted my device and flashed CM7.
One of the few things that I really enjoyed from Sense was the Contact syncing with FB (so their FB profile pictures were in my contact list and appeared when people called), and the dialer allowing me to type names rather than numbers to call contacts.
Are there any 3rd party apps or tricks in CM7 to get some of those features?

Try friendcaster from the market
I got your 10 char right here
Also go to settings/accounts and sync to add which ever fb app your using.
I got your 10 char right here
I'll check out the friendcaster. Thanks!
I use the standard FB app, and i've done the Settings>Accounts & Sync options for that but it seems like it didn't really link my contacts with their FB profiles. Thats the main thing i'm looking for.

You can always manually link them from the contacts app. It will suck if you have a lot of contacts.
Open the contact, menu, edit, join and it should find potential matches.
Sucks to do it one by one, anyone know if there is a way to have it run through all and make suggestions like sense does?

If they have the same name it should link itself. I usually have to manually add a few who have changed their Facebook name. Twitter can be added as well as linked in.

[Q] facebook sync fix for ics

Is there any way to fix it without using third party apps?
Another one with the same problem. Even a third party app would be fine for me... Any suggestion?

Its not broken. The Official Facebook application doesn't support Android 4.0 just yet so you will not be able to sync your contacts to your device. The only method is to use third party applications. I use Friendcaster Pro and it works really well.
Unfortunately, Till Facebook adds compatibility to the official application... you will not see your contacts sync to your device
Nope, the issue is between Google and Facebook, so we won't see contact sync fixed until Google and Facebook make an agreement or until a custom ROM fixes is. I forget the whole story, but I think Facebook doesn't use Android's contact API so when you sync Facebook contacts with your phone they all stay with Facebook and aren't stored locally on the phone. If you uninstall Facebook all your Facebook contacts go to. Google doesn't like that FB doesn't let you control and keep your FB data on your phone so they revoked Facebooks access to the API.
EDIT: heres an article about it: http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/22/google-disables-contact-sync-in-facebook-for-android-only-nexus/

You sorta proved my point. More or less its not compatibility with Android 4.0 but its the Nexus S. Once again Facebook will have to upgrade the application in order to make it compatible with the Nexus S. Only difference between what I said is instead of Android 4.0 its for the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus
Facebook contact data will continue to appear within the Facebook app. Like all developers on Android, Facebook is free to use the Android contacts API to truly integrate contacts on the device, which would allow users to have more control over their data.

Facebook never updated the app on Gingerbread. Facebook sync was included in custom ROMS because developers enabled it. Nothing to do with official support from Facebook. Until Google and Facebook sort this out, vanilla Android won't support contact sync, unless Facebook starts using the regular contact API

[Q] Will Facebook be fixed ever? whose fault is it anyway?

Facebook contact syncing does not work in 4.0.3.
I have read plenty of threads about custom roms that fix it and HaxSync which offers to fix it for a dollar. This seems like a pretty essential feature and I don't know why 4.0.3 seems to block it when it is fine with other things syncing with contacts.
who is to blame here? I also heard facebook did not adhere to googles new policies about contact syncing? So is facebook going to release a new app that will fix this? or will google change whatever blocking they have? or is there an easy fix that does not require a custom rom or some hacky app?

Facebook and Google are to blame
A fix has indeed been released for ICS that fixes this.
Without giving you all the nasty details, the problem was, back in Gingerbread 2.3, that Facebook didn't want to abide to Google's Contactlist API policies (they wanted to use their own). So Google blocked the Facebook Contact API. Cyanogen reverted that almost instantaneously though.
Facebook and Google still don't play nice, so it remains a blocked feature.

No, he means that Cyanogen has implimented a fix (reverted to the old code) in their ROMS. Like CM9 ROMS have the reverted code so the FB syncs just as is used to. All STOCK ICS ROMS still block the FB sync feature and will for the foreseeable future.

it shouldn't. facebook needs to follow the rules of the device it makes an app on. its annoying that they won't.

Blurry Contact Pictures Discussion

What is everybody doing as a workaround for the blurry contact pictures problem that results from syncing your contacts with gmail?
Sense does a pretty good job of masking the problem in some versions, but it's terrible in AOSP ICS.
Are you all just putting up with it or have you disabled contact syncing with gmail or employed another workaround? I'm curious how everybody is solving this problem for themselves.

When you sync your contacts with gmail tho, doesn't it compress them and make them pixelated? Or does Haxsync bypass this somehow?
I just put up with it. I used to sync with syncmypix then disable the Google sync, but then I decided that having my contacts backed up was more important than having nice pics.
Curious to see if anyone has a good solution to this.
Been using haxsync now for the last 24 hours or so. It seems to work around the gmail sync problem. My pictures are significantly higher quality now, though they could still be clearer.
HTC broke the contact photos in ICS. I use Haxsync too.

It's a server side thing, the only possible 'fix' is if the Gmail team bumps up the contact resolution. The resolution was bumped up in Jellybean but it only works offline, so once you sync then you're back to low res crap.
I just deal with it though, can't be bothered to do something that should have been done in by Google in the first place.

Well that's a bummer. Oh well.
I remember reading somewhere that if you upload your contact pics directly to your Google account via web browser on a PC, the contact pictures come out clear on your phone.
But honestly who could be bothered to do that? Obviously not me since I can't confirm that this workaround actually works.

I tried that once and it doesn't make a difference, they will still blur as soon as you sync

I always use an app called HD Contact Photos, and donated a buck for the extras, it lets you use higher quality photos,up to i believe 512x512 ie Stock Photos for stock ICS and if you are using HTC, you can download Facebook and/or Twitter pics and those will be higher quality, as HTC did somehow break HQ FB pics in ICS
i keep high quality contacts on my SD Card and manually link them. They stay clear and perfect even with Google Syncing.. Though new ROM = lose them and have to do it again...
looking for a way to back them up.

[S] [APP] Contact Picture Sync

Guys, I'm having a hard time finding an App that syncs Facebook profile pictures in HD to my phone contacts.
Haven't found a real alternative for HaxSync yet. HaxSync works for syncing the pictures in best quality, but only as long as the phone contac is named like the Facebook contact. PicSync seems to do it the right way by letting you chose a sync by Facebook ID (means it doesn't care about changing names), but it's no HD.
Any REAL alternatives, please?

WTF? We live in the 21st century and even HTCs social hub can sync by Facebook ID and everybody is telling me that HaxSync is the ONLY way for now?
Excuse me?!
HaxSync can and does sync friends manually, even though it's a bit less than user-friendly at the moment. The next update will make it much easier
Try this
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ro.weednet.contactssync&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsInJvLndlZWRuZXQuY29udGFjdHNzeW5jIl0.
It connects by FB id... atleast that wat it claims
I've just tried contact picture sync and it seems working.
It's free and you can sync them manually in HD.

Does it also sync all contact pictures by time schedule? HaxSync would be perfect if it would sync by ID and not by the stupid names.. you know how often girls change their ****ty names on Facebook - and boom, HaxSync doesn't recognize the person any longer and the conract picture catches dust. Awesome.

Huge problem I have with this App: It does not really only sync the contacts in my phone list. I don't even want a facebook link in my contacts and I do NOT want to let Facebook import any phone contacts into the friggin' interwebz. I JUST want the goddamn picture in HD, synced by ID!

I upgraded it - do I still need the JellyBean Workaround? And one more thing: Could you simplify the menu structure, please? I've tested all the tools mentioned in this thread.. and came back to HaxSync.
