oh...damn...

And what good in NFC anyway ?

NFC = Near Field Communication

Well,it basically lets you integrate your credit card on to your device and lets you pay through it... kind of like a mobile wallet. Its available on the nexus s and later devices.was wondering if it were there on desire s...

But when I click on sharing a document or picture an option for nfc tapping comes up as well. But when I tap on it the file manager force closes and sometimes nothing happens.

Apparently the galaxy nexus has the nfc chip built into the battery. So might be able to have it in the future. They're also making sims with nfc chips

i found nfc lib in the lib folder.

NFC is still new so just got to be patient

I had no idea there was an NFC chip on the Desire S...
Is there really?

Well,I just contacted HTC and they said that the device is indeed NFC enabled...

The HTC Desire S sold in India is indeed NFC enabled.
It doesn't look like any others are.

You can also use a SD card with NFC transmitter.

And suppose you had nfc (which the desire s most definitely does not - India or elsewhere)... what would you do with it?
Just asking...because last I checked, there are no practical real world applications of that technology currently... anywhere in the world. It may become widely used one day...but I promise you, when that day comes, you will have upgraded to a different device!

Nfc is used within android beam and brings nice features (ics only), there are also some companys allready offering services (mostly information services or app pushes) based on nfc and don't forget the google wallet.
Nfc is also compatible with rfid.
Oh and the desire s release in india is nfc enabled, maybe not the first generation, but the current for sure.

Wow. If that is true, it's indeed good to know!

Devices could be made be NFC enabled, coming Q2, check this link -
http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/11/moneto-nfc-microsd-contactless-payment-Android-iPhone/

I knew that the Desire S (and other models) is not NFC compatible because the case contains metal, and NFC enabled devices should be made from plastic. Metal cases are interfering with NFC operation. Probably the Desire S sold in India is different (just above someone said that it looks different). If this is the case, I doubt that an SD card will be of any use...case will still be made from metal and interfere. I hope I heard wrong or that they found a way to bypass this

[SUGGEST] Buying my first Android!

Hello everybody,
I will buying my first android very soon and my budget is of INR 25,000 = 451.811 USD = 358.611 EUR
The prices are to be considered for unlocked devices.
Requirements:-
I would prefer ICS on it. It won't matter wether it comes preloaded or an update would be available afterwards.
It should have a front facing camera as now it is a requirement for me.
If possible suggest dual core smartphones.
The back camera should be minimum of 5 Mega-pixel with flash.
I would also prefer such phones which have developer community support.
It is preferable to have phones of Sony, HTC or Samsung as I don't trust other companies much.
My List:-
Sony Xperia P
I have heard it is a good phone but it's battery life may be shorter & I have also heard that due to the new white pixel techonlogy of Sony battery life is not a big problem as it consumes less power.
HTC Sensation
It is great phone but it was released last year and I have heard so may issues relating to it such as Death grip, unresponsive touch screen, poor battery life, improper viewing angles.
Suggestions are welcome but please see to it that it meets my list of requirements.

Sorry mate.
Post updated. Actually I use currency converter plugin that caused the problem while posting.
If that's the Indian rupee, $448 can get you a SGS3 if only it were available in India.. there's always buying it somewhere online and having it shipped to your country as an option.
If not, there's the Galaxy Nexus that I would recommend second.
I'd never recommend an HTC, due to in part that sense is nonsense. What's the point of going to a dev community with a sense phone if the #1 motif will be REMOVING Sense? Lol. I'd avoid HTC altogether. The beats by dre sound is a joke, just overpowered bass. Get Samsung, then combine it with voodoo sound.
Don't make the mistake of getting an SGSII though.

What about the HTC One like was suggested? From everything I've read it looks amazing (great screen, great camera). Then again, idk of that falls into the price range either.

720p Video Recording:

Hello everyone
Keeping in mind the excellent dev support for NS , i wanted to ask if someone has managed to enable 720p video recording on it ? if it is possible ...
thanks for any info in advance
Not possible.
i too was curious about this a while ago... got a similar "plain" answer with no explanation... which obviously didn't satisfy the original urge to discover the answer... the more drawn out answer is:
the Nexus S doesn't have the hardware to allow for HD recording... we can thank the NFC chip that was added in place of where the extra bit for HD recording hardware would've gone...
btw, search is your friend... ibtl

Please keep in mind that Nexus S is primarily a developer phone. For a developer it is better to have every bit of hardware the Android SDK supports than having extra functions which are useless for a developer.

good point... because i bought it b/c it was a phone... maybe this is why google hasn't gained as much ground as they could've?? NFC is only NOW useful since Google Wallets latest update allowing for adding other cards like Visa, etc... before that, NFC was totally useless for me and pretty much everyone else!
but you're point does make a lot of sense from that perspective!!

Yeah... that's true.
It's sad because we the owners that use the s3 version of the htc one s didn't get android 4.0.4 and sense 4.1 and others will be getting jb this month!
Another F.U. post for HTC !
Yea, but if you read at the bottom, tmo one s won't get it with the rest, it's bad enough having to wait on manufacturers to work the new version into their skin that they just haaave to have, but we also have to wait on the carrier to approve and add their extra layer of crap. I really wish they would all just give us the option to run vanilla android if we wanted without rooting. It does me up the wall. Ok I'm done ranting now.

This is good, seems HTC and Samsung both want to get there flagship devices on jb, but we will probably see a leak sooner I knew it was coming soon

Yanno with how tmo is constantly trying to improve everything. Common sense would b to get these updates out quickly. To build confidence with there customers.
But it does make sense for HTC to wait for the one x+ to land in the u.s .. but screw both theories /endofrant

You do have a choice.... its called get a Nexus!!! HTC/Samsung/Motorola/etc, always have, and always will add a skin to their phones. It's one of the reasons I bought my One S... For Sense!!!!! I never understood why people complain and ask companies to remove the one feature they add that is PURPOSELY added to help differentiate their phones from all the rest.
I prefer vanilla over sense. I bought the One S because of the excellent hardware, not because of sense. Still I would say that sense is better than vanilla for beginners. Some reasons:
1. Labels under every button so its behavior is clear. In some Google apps, for example Gmail, there are lots of buttons without labels and its not always clear what they do. Yes, I know I can long press to get description, but not everyone does.
2. More functionality included without third party apps. Why hasn't Google included something as basic as stopwatch in their clock app?
Theres probably more, but this is what I could think of now

Wow...been using Android for many years and just learned about this long press trick. I don't care about #2...I'd rather find an app that works the way I want it to rather than have some bloatware running in the background all the time.

HTC lying again

Kinda like HTC president commenting that it was poor marketing campaigns that made for lower sales than other brands.
I really like the build quality on my HTC devices. But some things could be improved on other ends.
+1. Build quality is great, much better than sh*tty Samsung devices with plastic all over it. The software side, support, and updates are what is lacking at a disgusting level.

So there probably is an issue with it eg performance or it wouldn't be this long. Most likely the fact they used an older slower processor. They should replace every s3.

When I buy a device, I honestly dont give a rats ass about what the manufacture says. I check the XDA section for said device and see how the custom rom/root/unlock support is , and google a bit for build quality etc.
The only thing that we have to rely on the manufacture for, is the kernel source for said device/version. GIEF THE SOURCE ALREADY!
But theres always AOSP options...
Half the point, for me at least, with an android device is that you are NOT LOCKED to whatever the manufacture puts in it - you are free to change it!

Can the N5 be made compatible with the HTC Fetch ?

The HTC Fetch is a little device that you keep on your key ring and it's paired with your phone by bluetooth. If you misplace the phone you can ring it, or if you move out of the range of the Fetch (15m) it beeps.
http://blog.htc.com/2013/10/tired-of-losing-your-phone-meet-the-htc-fetch/
Officially the Fetch is only compatible with some HTC devices. What stops the community from making other phones compatible with this device ?

That's good to hear. I see the price is similar at 24euros and they would steal the show from HTC if they make it user friendly across platforms. Can 2 tags function without a host phone ?
