I used screen filter on my captivate for night time reading but on my note all it really does is wash out the colors. Is anyone else having this problem or have alternative apps that would work. screen is just too bright for night time reading even on the dimmest setting.
I think this is always how Screen Filter works. Maybe you just didn't notice before due to which setting you're using. Screen Filter works like if you turn down the brightness on a JPG photo, so you lose color depth.
There's no way around it - SF reduces the dynamic range of the screen, so you're going to have a correspondingly smaller palette of colors. The lower you go, the worse it gets.
Thanks for the replies guys. It just seemed more drastic on the note. Maybe its the bigger size. Can't even do a comparison cause I already shipped my captivate off to my mom.
Try using a program with night mode, with opera, doing the red on black mod.
Screen filter also blotches up the blacks for me too.
Superdim is an app available in the market... I am using it happily on my sgs sl i9003... It works great...
Screen filter basically applies a graish filter on the screen whereas superdim allows you to turn down brightness from levels lower than stock!

I found it with no problem. Requires root, maybe that's why it's not showing up for you? I just did a search for Superdim.

Anyone know of something to adjust the actual profile of the Autobright??

Like I said, Superdim doesn't do squat for me. Default minimum brightnes shows 20 on Superdim. If I reduce it to 1 nothing changes. Can you tell me your screen is actually dimmer on 1 than on 20?

My biggest complaint with this phone is that the screen is far too bright on its lowest setting, which I feel is a huge reason the battery life isn't as good as it could be. My iPhone can be turned down way dimmer than my Captivate. Is there anything I can do about this? Any apps or hacks that will allow me to dim the screen further than the OS allows?
--Thanks.
PS. It's rooted and all that goodness.

Thanks, I definitely like the added control with that app but it's still frying my retinas sadly.
You could look for a kernel with voodoo color. But you would have to use a custom ROM, I don't think the kernels that support it are compatible with a stock ROM.
Edit
You could also use darker, if not completely black, wallpaper and themes.

Switched over to the Talon Kernel, which seems to have a dimmer screen by default, but I don't see any options in the voodoo app for adjusting the brightness of the screen (just RGB and gamma).

Lower the gamma hack value. If they are at 0, 0, 0 now, try it at -30,-30,-30. It wrong change the color perception, just brightness. Play around with it and find what you like.

I personally take no credit for this as i was searching how to set proper settings for my auto brightness using Team DIRT v1.7, so i searched all over Google and came across these settings that were recommended by the user "brkshr" over at rootzwiki, so all credit goes to him as i'm only basically copying and pasting what he has over there, hopefully it's not a big deal, if so, we can always remove this. They seem to be working just fine for me, but if any of you would like to give it a go, go ahead. I'm not responsible if your phone blows up, make a nandroid backup before you ever play with your phone settings. Shout outs to Team DIRT, CM Team for everything they've provided to us for our beloved Evil (Evo) OG (4G). If you don't find it too much to ask for, please thank the guy i bit this off of. "brkshr"

i haven't heard anything new on the compass so I'm assuming it's working just fine, i use googles maps without any issues so i would say yes it's fixed. as far as the auto brightness features, if you follow this guide, it will set your values up in a sense that it covers all types of lighting situations. i tried it out yesterday in doors and out, i'd have to say i was quite happy with the results. very responsive as well.
Am I doing something wrong? I tried following the steps here but my screen was so dim that I could barely see it indoors.
I am on Deck's Reloaded and I changed the number of levels to 20 and tried to mimic the settings but didn't have any luck. When I change the number of levels the "upper" value (that can't be changed) are all 0...Do I need to do something to change that? I tried just going through and setting it like in the attachments but maybe I did something wrong.

Change the entries under "screen" to something higher until it looks good to u. I like mine a little brighter, so I started with "0,80,0" as the first line, and then increased as I went down the list. Hope this makes sense.

I think you guys misunderstood my question earlier. Last time I tried cm9 (about two weeks ago) the custom auto brightness settings could not be changed, they would revert as soon as you exit the menu even after hitting save and apply. Also the time it took to adjust to changing light conditions was +10 seconds and basically unusable. (I saw in the changelog it was this way because they werent able to get custom auto brightness and the compass working at the same time). So am I to believe this is not the case anymore?

Been several posts in Q&A, and in general about best methods for adjusting brightness. Personally I like the slider in the notification tray, but the app Q Bright is by far the best app I've used for this purpose. Full slider, 4 customizable presets, full app customizations, fast acting, oh yeah, it's free.
Thought I'd share.
It's actually Qbright one word

I like screen filter. It's free as well. It can make the screen go dimmer than with the notification slider. Q bright is pretty cool too. Wish I had a search key to long press to bring it up though haha

I've been using Lux for awhile now and it's been working great.
I also use lux, but everytime i reboot i have to open the dash to get it to work. I have the notification icon active, which always says for some reason 50% after boot until I click it. Lux works with tasker and i like that for profiling.
<quick hijack>I've been on the hunt for a widget I can pop in my homescreen that will jump between preset brightness levels. I generally keep my phone around 5% or so but when I'm outside I can't see that. I can pull down the notifications and adjust the slider but a button on my homescreen is much easier.
This one works pretty well but the icon doesn't center properly and my ocd brain can't take it. Plus sometimes it will just jump between 30%-100%...No idea why.
Sorry for derailing the thread
</hijack>
Saw that too, I couldn't deal with the off center widget either. I mean seriously, wtf? Who wants that on their screen?

I've never seen a dumber way of setting a friggin wallpaper in my life. They make you crop 75% of the picture out. I want something that is a once and done setting, not a stupid app that has to run in the background like I've seen other times.

This obviously depends on the dimensions of the picture you feed it, and is not the fault of the device. If you want the sharpest image possible, edit your picture to 1920x1408 -- those are the dimensions ASUS is using itself on the stock wallpaper(s). I haven't tested the thickness of the launcher bar, but that shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

When using Nova launcher, you have this option to use 'Nova crop' to set wallpapers. This allows you to set the entire picture instead of only a small part of it.
Ideal for those HD pictures (that due to the zoom wouldn't look HD otherwise)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1808045
It has to do with the aspect ratio of 1920 x 1200 both in portrait/landscape modes. In order to accommodate both screen orientations with the wallpaper, it has to be cropped that way and you end up only getting the middle of the image really. So choosing a picture that is sort of zoomed out on the middle target gives the best results as a wallpaper.

What is the smearing issue?
Our lovely SGS4 Super AMOLED screens are the first kind to completely turn off pixels when true black is showing...
Previous generation AMOLED screens used on the SGS1,2 & 3 devices kept power to black pixels which could be seen in a very dark room as a faint glow on areas of screen showing black.
So we now have true black screens with switched off pixels which is a GOOD thing... Am I right?
Well in theory yes but you have probably noticed a fairly annoying flaw when this is put into practice. The pixels take time to turn back on so whenever a grey or dark object moves across the screen against a black background the image will "Smear" due to this pixel switch-on delay.
How does this app fix this?
It's very simple and not a true fix. The app creates a nearly transparent white overlay covering the screen. This will make blacks a very dark grey which you will find hard to notice but it is enough to prevent pixels from switching off since true black is eliminated.
Use the Smear Fix app to launch the overlay and the Kill Smear Fix app to remove it. Simple!
Quick Guide
#1 install the "Kill smear fix app first
#2 install the "Smear Fix V1.4 app
#3 When you launch the app there is NO ui interfaace. The app with create a nearly invisible overlay which will cover the entire screen.
#4 The app WILL auto start on boot UNLESS you have killed it previously using the Kill app.
#4 The Kill App will remove the overlay AND prevent the main app restating on reboot. The control file for this is "smearfix" stored at the root of your SD memory.
IMPORTANT: This app has just one known issue/bug/quirk which is the same you will find for ALL overlay/screen filter type apps so I can't fix it.
When the app is running you WILL NOT be able to install any apps manually. The install button just won't respond. You will have to use the kill app to undo the fix to remedy this.
ROOT NOT REQUIRED!!
Install the Kill App BEFORE you install the main overlay app
V1.2>>> Kill app now properly kills the main app and service.
V1.3>>> Fixed landscape overlay
V1.4>>> Made overlay 1080x1920 properly this time. USES LESS RESOURCES TO RUN!!

Nice work
Nice work.
The only 'small' disadvantage will be the battery life. I dont know to what extent it will reduce but it surely will since switching on of those black pixels will come into picture.

It's going to draw more not because of the screen but because you're adding an overlay layer on the whole screen which needs to get fully redrawn every single time anything happens on the screen.
The application works well. I only detect one problem, to rotate the screen coverage is maintaining the width of the screen in portrait and not suited to be in landscape.
I hope it will be useful to say.
Thank you very much.

In apps with true blacks (like STweaks) you can still see smearing.
