If all you did was root, you should be able to keep it when flashing. Others have reported that it stays. If you flashed a custom recovery though, it would be wise to flash back to stock first before updating.

Yes. But after OTA root & custom recovery is out.
Have the Stock, Rooted AT&T version they just were selling at Best Buy. Don't attempt the OTA update. when I did this morning, the phone rebooted to the exclamation/android screen. thankfully pulling the battery let it boot back to normal. I may have to un-root in order to install 2.3.6.

That is called recovery, and it is how updates get installed.

isn't that a failed update though?
I have a G2x with the stock 2.3 rom installed. I would like to root the phone but maintain my app data. I can't use titanium backup because I don't have root. I tried installed the rooted stock 2.3 rom but lost all app data.
Any suggestions?
If all you're doing is rooting you shouldn't lose any data. You only lose data when actually flashing a ROM, not by rooting your current one.

I knew about the zip, but will superoneclick still not work on the g2x? I know it used to not work with gb, but since they updated it I know it can do some phones on gb.
I rooted a friends sgs2 stock 2.3.5 using superoneclick.

Use the nvflash method and back everything up using clokwordmod's backup option. No root required. You can also save your apps using something like App Backup and Restore from the Android Market:

Hey guys I keep reading of others getting prompted to update. What update is this I haven't gotten prompted, I'm just rooted and unlocked? If I get prompted and dont catch it before it flashes is it gonna brick me?

Just flash a custom recovery and you'll be fine.
We need more threads about this.

Yes. It will also kill your family and steal your lunch money. Fear it.
A simple (check the general thread) would have sufficed! But glad to see that there's still dicks handing out the same b.s. lectures! Or making fun of people!

It's pretty easy to root ics

Sorry I know I'm not helping at all, but really, that made my day.
More information. What ROM, do you have a custom recovery? If you have stock recovery then the ota def updated itself. If your stock rooted then it will do that without asking
