unlock galaxy s 4g (vibrant) super problems - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

hi there experts
i am having a hard time sim unlocking this particular phone. i have no idea what else to do.
the applications by DaGentooBoy do not work. the code comes back NULL
there is no nv_data.bin file anywhere to be found in the phone
i tried the BML5 method, but the string is nowhere to be found in that file.
it seems that the t-mobile galaxy s 4g phone do not have this unlock code incorporated in.
i have tried Galaxy_s Unlock took from the market but it always gives an error saying that i have a problem with busybox. i have tried it on rooted 2.2 froyo the phone came with. i have 2.3.6 gingerbread on right now (stock from samsung loaded with kies and rooted with superoneclick 2.2) but no go same issues. i tried installing different busybox versions. still nothing. i have tried other roms, still nothing. the developers of galaxy_s unlock tool say that there are issues with busybox and droid2.2, but it does not work on 2.3.4, 2.3.6. nothing works.
i have tried and unlocked an att captivate with the galaxy_s unlock tool after root. that phone also had the codes coming up NULL and no nv_data.bin files, but it works with galaxy_s unlock tool.
i am reading here (http://techlab102.com/samsung-galaxy-s-carrier-unlock/) that the t-mobile vibrant phone has a bunch of bloatware that prevents busybox from installing correctly or at all. they said they installed some manager and uninstalled this bloatware, but fails to says which ones. i am looking at a ton of stuff in the phone with the manager, and i have no idea what to uninstall in order for the busybox to install correctly anf for glagy_s unlock tool to work.
if anybody can point me in a direction that would allow me to do this i would really appreciate it. thank you very much.
jmecherul
EDIT: this is the galaxy s 4g from t-mobile (no the vibrant). is it possible that the nv_data.bin files is somewhere else in the phone no in the usual spot?

The nv_data.bin should be found in
/efs/root/afs/settings.
i dont recommend the apps as ive tried them, and all of them nulled my imei. (maybe thats just me).

i found it
wondering why the nv_data.bin is in that folder instead of just /efs on the galaxy s 4g. funny.

If your imei is already null and you have no backup of the efs folder or even the nv_data.bin, im sorry i cant help you, you should ask a true expert.
If you do have a backup of the original unedited nv_data.bin, youre in luck.
Step 1: delete the nv_data.bin file from the original folder.
Step 2: move the backup of the nv_data.bin file you have into the original folder.
Step 3: open up your hex editor of choice, and go to the nv_Data.bin file. Hit options, jump to address ->1468 after the ff, you will see 01 00 00 00. (these numbers represent the locks. 01 is the network lock.)
change the 01 to 00. Save it, and close hex editor.
Step 4: delete the nv.md5 file located in the same folder as the nv_bin file.
Step 5: reboot.
if you dun have the backup, i just spent time writing that for nothing T-T

i see where it is now. i did read that procedure with the nv_data.bin on the website, but seemed complicated and i thought the file is somewhere else. but, follower the procedure and worked like a charm. thanks

hi LIGHT
thanks for the heads up. my imei was fine. i suppose by NULL you mean that it shows NULL instead of the 16 digits in settings/about phone/status. it was never the case with mine. i am a little bit of an idiot because i was trying to do it the easy way using the software instead of dipping my toes into a little bit of linux stuff. the procedure was right there in front on me (there is a big post about it) but mentions the software below the hard way. but, got it working and now shows network unlocked and takes other sims.
it is kind of funny how the att captivate worked with the GALAXY_S UNLOCK software and the S 4G does not. it seem that t-mobile is doing something funky. although, it just struck me that i could have called t-mobile and ask them for an unlock code, but i kind of wanted to do it myself.
thanks anyway. it is much appreciated

By null, i mean 0000000000000000.
But glad you figured it out.

Need help, disparate

I bought captivate from ebay, the phone came rooted.
I installed few applications to unlock the phone, tried to use PC .bat files to extract the code, no luck, I was getting no code at all or FFFFFF.
Later I found out that in my main sd directory i have a 40mb nv data with FFFFFF.
I am not sure if this was generated as a backup .bak file from efs folder, so I went and installed terminol and tried accessing the efs folder, no luck, but I can access other folders. if i access efs it says premission denied, but using app android mate i am able to browse efs folder but it shows 0 files. other folders are ok.
My question is, after 2 days of headache, what should I do now, I have been searching all day long for answers.
Also if i run .bat files from PC while device connected, sometimes i also get permission denied message.
I'ts possible this phone was flashed before because I get the FFFFF from nv data?
plz help.
ok i was able to copy via emulator using this line
busybox cp /efs/nv_data.bin /sdcard
to sdcard and the file was 2mb in size, i have another .bak file 40mb in size, so, is this some kind of an application did this to the phone?
The phone is
2.1 update 1
i897ucjf6
kernel 2.6.29
eclair
i also have md5 file copied to sd is 1kb file.
I would say the phone definitely was flashed. With android mate did you allow for hidden files or something like that. I use root explorer.
Can you make and receive calls?
Miui
First of all, you don't seem like you know what you're doing, so back up /efs in its entirety to the sd card, then again to your computer before you do anything else and break something.
Secondly, if you're on 2.2 (which I assume you are), there is a thread that tells you how to do a carrier unlock with step by step instructions. Search for 'carrier unlock' and it should be on the first page of results.
nothing like hidden files or anything, i'll try but i get accessed already with emulator
i have a backup of most of the efs content, that's 2 files or so, i will try to search for additional files. I think one of the apps did a .bak file to the nav_data and saved it in the sdcard folder.
i'm on 2.1 i assume it was flashed forwards and backwards because the nv data is 40mb but has FFFFFF in it.
what do you think?
I saw this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8182729#post8182729
i think my last resort. I'll try to search for the thread you specified but im running 2.1.
p.s no luck on hidden files i cant find that setting.
p.s i bought this phone on ebay cant make calls until i unlock it for my sim. but i do have wireless connection.
p.s my kies keeps saying "connecting" to the phone, but that's i guess a different problem, i run drivers and kies full from samsung site.

*#7465625# <- Dial that number. Does it say 'off' for everything? If it does, you already have an unlocked phone.
If you're on 2.1, you might as well try the SGS Unlock tool from the market in the off chance that it WASN'T flashed forward and back to 2.1. If it was, there isn't really a reason to stay on 2.1. You might as well flash to some 2.2 rom and follow this procedure I mentioned earlier:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831569&highlight=carrier+unlock
it says network lock is ON.
i tried the market app tools, 2-3 tools, doesn't work. they doesn't work because i have extracted nv data and the code is FFFFFF. now i don't know if it was flashed forwards and backwards, i'm just assuming.
rom 2.1 or 2.2 means the version software? can i update to 2.3? what's the best way to update it?
also i have 2 bin/bak files, 1 is 2mb and 1 is 40mb, which one should i use with the thread you specified?
in efs folder i had nv data bin as 2mb and in sdcard i had nv data bak 40mb
nv data bak file created just yesterday i think as the date says 29march.
his Step 1: Install / Verify that you have a v2.1 ROM or v2.2 ROM installed.
does it mean i can use it on my 2.1 as well?
I have no idea why one of yours is 40mb, but it sounds messed up. Both nv_data.bin and .nv_data.bak are supposed to be 2mb. You can use either, as they're supposed to be the exact same file. There shouldn't be any files in /efs that are 40mb.
You're all over the place. You really need to spend a day or two reading the forums; especially the stickied threads about how to flash a new rom.
And yes, it means you can use that procedure on a 2.1 rom.
it was nv_data.bak inside sdcard folder, not efs.
but anyway, i think i got it. in that thread you specified some people said there's an helroz app does the same thing, unlocking without using a code, so i used it and it worked, network lock is now off and it catches orange provider.
i think the only thing left is to root it to a new version.
I would flash back to stock 2.1 using Odin and do a Master Clear. Then root phone again and and install CWM. After that flash a custom rom.
Have you tried the app Galaxy S Unlock from the app store, worked well for me.
Fixed problem.
Got the phone from ebay was locked, was unable to unlock with most market apps, but helroz app got it unlocked the same way his thread specifies, by replacing the FFFFFFF. my nv data file was bad but imie code was ok. i got it unlocked, then flashed to stock + master clear with odin, then i got unregistered error with kies mini program, the nv_data created by the helroz app wasnt so good and had bad product code, followed the thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881162 to fix the file, replaced old file, first rooted, then used emulator and busybox with cmd only.
got a good product code, then did once again a master clear, then upgraded to 2.2 via kies mini, got a fresh version and a clear phone.
i spent 3 days on that averaging 10 hours a day. madness.

Unlocking is relatively easy if you have a rooted phone.
You just need to edit /efs/root/afs/settings/nv_data.bin
Use HexEdit or whatever binary editor you have.
Go to address 0x1468 which looks like: ff 01 00 00 00 00 38 36
change 01 to 00 and you will disable a network lock.
As usual, backing up is for weaklings ;-)
btw, this info is available if you search. I am just repeating what others found.

FWIW, this method worked for me. I had followed the other instructions of finding my code in "bml3", but it didn't unlock my phone (even after restarting it). This method worked as advertised.
For those of you who are a little mystified what these instructions mean or are unsure of how to do this safely, here are some more clues (there are plenty of posts/threads explaining these steps in detail in this forum):
1. Root your phone
2. Get "Android Commander" (a PC application that lets you painlessly move files between your phone and your PC) [[if you are an expert, you don't really need this -- or my clues ]]
3. Copy "/efs/root/afs/settings/nv_data.bin" to your PC. Now, for safety, make another copy of it on your PC called "nv_data.bin-ORIG" or whatever.
4. Get a hex editor. The 010 Editor mentioned in various posts is a popular choice.
5. Edit your PC copy of "nv_data.bin" with your hex editor. Make the change mentioned in nmil's post, save, and exit.
6. Back to Android Commander. Copy your modified PC copy of "nv_data.bin" back to the original location on your phone. You will be overlaying the original copy of the file on your phone. This is the most sensitive step, so don't mess it up.
7. Restart your phone with a SIM card that is not from T-Mobile. You should be all clear now (no unlock prompt).
Sorry if I belabored the point above, but there are lots of posts around from people who are not very experienced with such things. ("I followed your procedure exactly, and now my garage door won't open.")

restoring a lost IMEI

in the process of flashing the phone no longer show it's IMEI in status or in *#06#.
Carrier blocks the phone, i assume because of this.
seems to me that /efs/root/afs/settings/nv_data.bin is corrupted.
there is no backup file. :-( How do I recreate the file? can I use some other file and patch it with the correct IMEI?

What were you doing prior to this?
Does it ask you for a unlock code?
Details please.
i used odin to flash roms to upgrade to gingerbread.
kc1, kh1, voodoo kernel... it's now at kg6.
the phone was t-mobile unlocked, supposedly.
after i had issues with no calls in or out i noticed the imei reported in software (about phone or *#06#) is 00000000000000.
phone reports registered to the cellular network.
nv_data.bin in /efs/root/afs/settings is only 265kb and in hex editor it's all FF apart from one location with 00000000 values.
on an identical phone i have imei reported correctly. can i use it to recover the other one?

256kb is the right size. It sounds like someone went the route of trying to hex edit the nv_data.bin to unlock and so on.
It's protected by a md5 checksum file.
Try this - back up the nv_data.bin.md5 in the /efs/root/afs/settings folder as well as the nv_data.bin ( just in case ) and DELETE only the nv_data.bin.md5 file. Reboot. Check your IMEI. Post back.

Try this.
Download hex editor.
Open hex editor.
Go look for the nv_data.bin file.
Hit options (the paper looking icon on the botton left of your phone) and click jump to address.
Type 1x1468.
After FF, the next 2 digits probably say 00. Try changing it to 01. And reboot.
If it doesnt work, go back to hex editor and change it back to 00 as thats the network lock.....

You mean address 1468 in hex?
Tried it.
It turned back to 00 after reboot.
Imei still in problem.
Do I need to have the sim in?
I took it out for fear of troubling the network.
Sent from my HTC HD2
I guess not. And no. Having the sim in or not, it doesnt really matter. And you can use the phone perfectly with the imei being straight out 0's. You can call, text, and even use data. Tried it for myself . Unless theres someone else with the same imei. Id say thats a pretty low chance seeing that most people want their own unique imei. Sorry i couldnt help. but hope you can solve your problem!

Unfortunately I can't use the phone with IMEI all in Zeros.

I can only switch carrier, but that's a hard option.

Tried that, it results with new efs files being created with the default 000 IMEI :-(
I suspect I found the offsets of the IMEI in the file of the SGS4G (it differs from other models) but I can't decrypt/encrypt it so to write there the correct IMEI value matching the sticker.
Parallel to that I could find people able to do that to other samsung models , but no one that can do that to SGS4G

[Q] How can I get a generic IMEI number on my SGS4G

Hi everyone,
I just picked up a GS4G and want it to work with my Tmobile web2go account but am having some trouble. Some people simply delete the EFS folder but that doesnt work and I have been able to reset the IMEI to all 0's but that gives me problems too.
I have read some people that have a generic IMEI number (004999010640000) or something like that and was wondering how can I get that on my phone. From what I have seen, it is due to flashing a certain rom or messing with the nv_data file. So which rom can I flash to get a generic IMEI or anything else I can do?
Thanks for any help anyone can offer as I would really like to save a few bucks and keep my data plan as it is. Thanks again
the generic actually doesn't work. It won't give you service.
Ive been playing around with it but after 2 days, I am still able to make calls and connect to tmobiles 4g service with the all zero imei.
For anyone wondering, I first deleted the efs folder (dont recommend unless you have 2 backups), restarted and then it came back with a weird imei of weird characters. I was able to make calls but couldnt connect to 4g which is my primary reason of doing this. So I edited my original bin file with microsoft word and changed a few numbers around, replaced it into my efs folder, then got the all zeroes imei. Then I flashed it back to stock via odin and after this, is connected with my internet plan just fine and could make calls fine as well. I thought about leaving it like this but then flashed it with valhalla black edition and it still connects just fine with an all zero IMEI. I still would like to try it with a bin file that gives an IMEI of 004999010640000 but for now, it works for me just fine.
I pay $5 a month for data from Tmobile (Web2go/Tzones) and didnt want to upgrade and am glad I finally got it to work after a few hours of messing around. If anyone has any questions, let me know. I look forward to poking around the SGS4 threads for awhile until my next phone.

Have you read up on this phone and know how to root and install roms and know how to use odin? (All very easy to do) I just dont want to get blamed if you mess up your phone and want to make sure you have at least two back ups of your nv_data.bin file (preferably on your computer as well as your sd card).
Also, just to make sure, it asks you to upgrade everytime you access the internet on 4g, right?

Thanks for the quick response. I use EFS_Pro_1.4.7 to backup and restore the efs folder. I just upgraded the phone to SMS-KJ6-beta2d_Stock-Rom_with_Bootloaders-One-Click. I do have two backups of EPS folder on my PC and my sd card. I also made a CWM backup.
Correct. It asks me to upgrade my data plan which I want to stick as long as I can. It works great on 3g on my rooted ICS HD2, but I want the 4G speed.

Thanks for the quick response. I use EFS_Pro_1.4.7 to backup and restore the efs folder. I just upgrade the phone to SMS-KJ6-beta2d_Stock-Rom_with_Bootloaders-One-Click. I do have two backups of EPS folder on my PC and my sd card.

K, just want to make sure. You shouldnt have any concern of bricking your phone since you're just editing one file and can always replace it but as with all flashing, just doublecheck everything. Delete the entire efs folder on your phone (you may have already done this), restart and should have a weird imei number of characters. On one of your backuped efs folders, find the nav bin file and open it with a hex editor. Then I just changed around a few of the numbers in the first lines randomly and saved it. I might have used Microsoft word to edit the bin file but both should work. then i put that nav file in the efs folder on my phone and rebooted it and put it back to stock via odin. Then when it restarted it still had the IMEI of all zeroes but could connect just fine on 4g.
This worked for me and hopefully works for me. If not, I MIGHT be willing to send you my own nav bin file that I personally use (which I wish I had at the start since it would have been much easier from the start) as long as you arent in my city. But thats a big risk since it might make my 4g stop working which would really suck
Thanks mendezj666. Please check your PM. Thanks.

Unlocking Wind-Mobilicity SGH-T959W procedure

I decided to create a post just in case someone who has the same phone T959W not T959V, can use this summarized guide to quickly unlock their phones. It has been my first time unlocking an android phone and in this forum and I had to spend a day researching on it to make sure I do not screw up a phone that was not mine to begin with. Also I believe this post will be useful for people who can't spend as much time as me researching the appropriate threads and want to save some money by unlocking this phone themselves. I pressed thanks for all the posts that I am showing in this discussion and some suggestive tips for the problems I encountered. Teehee
These posts were really useful throughout the process of unlocking Mobilicity SGH-T959W.
For rooting Mobilicity SGH-T959W , no need of superoneclick and stay away from ROM manager:
It got stuck in the middle said something about OS upgrade encountered problem, just unplug usb cable and plug it into another port

Information that you should know before you procede
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V
Now that you have blastoff kernel, you have CWM recovery 5.x.x and that should allow you to go any ICS/JS ROM
I got Custom ROM CM9, will get AKOP later
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V/Installing_CyanogenMod_9
-Remember to clear the cache and dvalik cache through advance menu in CWM recovery , although I read somewhere that putting it to factory settings can do both clear cache and clear data. I kept clean just incase.
-Also did a backup image in CWM recovery mode
And finally for unlocking:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980157&highlight=bml3
The emulator terminal was not working for me because the bml3.bak file didn't exist for some reason, Insted get this from file nv_data.bin from efs/root/afs/settings. You can use this app OI file manager to easily copy it, also if you can't find this file you can Root explorer app.
And also the 010 hex editor is know 010 editor now, and the modified settings is Line width>custom width>set to 32 . You can then find the 8-ASCII digits on the third window panel .
FYI, you can go to Windmobile.ca, login to your account, go to Unlock phone, enter your IMEI number and get an unlock code for free directly from Wind.
Thank you for gathering all the references for rooting/updating-to-CM9/unlocking T959W in one page and for nv_data.bin tip.

how do you get it for free cause I have 3 phones on my account and all are asking for a fee to unlock them, they are all paid up.
You can use my app which is free and will work as long as your phone is rooted:
