Unlocking is relatively easy if you have a rooted phone.
You just need to edit /efs/root/afs/settings/nv_data.bin
Use HexEdit or whatever binary editor you have.
Go to address 0x1468 which looks like: ff 01 00 00 00 00 38 36
change 01 to 00 and you will disable a network lock.
As usual, backing up is for weaklings ;-)
btw, this info is available if you search. I am just repeating what others found.

i was having all kinds of troubles i tried everything and this was honestly the only thing that worked. where there is the 01 00 00 00 00 replace the next 8 2 digit combos with all FF and i unlocked mine doing that....

Will keep this in mind, I'm ordering an used AT&T SIM card to unlock both my sidekick and exhibit II from T-mobile, rooted both phones today, and it's the first time I have something else other than a blackberry
Look forward to keep learning

HELP!!
I have tried multiple times to find the code to unlock my Sidekick 4 G but I keep failing. Can someone find it for me? My bml3.bak can be emailed to you if you can help.

FWIW, this method worked for me. I had followed the other instructions of finding my code in "bml3", but it didn't unlock my phone (even after restarting it). This method worked as advertised.
For those of you who are a little mystified what these instructions mean or are unsure of how to do this safely, here are some more clues (there are plenty of posts/threads explaining these steps in detail in this forum):
1. Root your phone
2. Get "Android Commander" (a PC application that lets you painlessly move files between your phone and your PC) [[if you are an expert, you don't really need this -- or my clues ]]
3. Copy "/efs/root/afs/settings/nv_data.bin" to your PC. Now, for safety, make another copy of it on your PC called "nv_data.bin-ORIG" or whatever.
4. Get a hex editor. The 010 Editor mentioned in various posts is a popular choice.
5. Edit your PC copy of "nv_data.bin" with your hex editor. Make the change mentioned in nmil's post, save, and exit.
6. Back to Android Commander. Copy your modified PC copy of "nv_data.bin" back to the original location on your phone. You will be overlaying the original copy of the file on your phone. This is the most sensitive step, so don't mess it up.
7. Restart your phone with a SIM card that is not from T-Mobile. You should be all clear now (no unlock prompt).
Sorry if I belabored the point above, but there are lots of posts around from people who are not very experienced with such things. ("I followed your procedure exactly, and now my garage door won't open.")

Newbie wants the BIG STORAGE Imate Jam!!!

Hi, very new on here and very new to the Pocket PC and Imate JAM. I have read allot about backing up ROM and process to get big storage hack but almost everything I read is way over my head. Like what is the extended ROM?? Ssooooo, can someone take all of the latest TIPS and show me the BEST and EASIEST way to upgrading my Imate JAM??? I still have the original ROM but would like to upgrade to the newest 1.12 ROM and 1.12 Radio ROM. I then would like to know how to keep some Imate specific programs installed like Intellitype.(I dont use MMS) PLEASE!!! I will even paypal someone some money for providing this BASIC elementary school level BIG STORAGE upgrade. Please dont assume anything about my level of knowledge as it is VERY basic. Thanks in advance for taking on this challenge. By the way, in the end I would want the latest Imate JAM WWE ROM and Radio in English.(I live in United States and use T-mobile on the 1900mhz band)

Ok... I think you won't get many replies, because what you are looking for has already been posted here many times. The big problem is that the info could indeed be burried inside very huge threads, so it will take a lot of reading to find it. But I'll try to summarize...
You will need to download the latest ROM for your Magician. Most likely you will want to stay with the ROM specifically designed for your device, for example from I-Mate. That way at least you can perform the ROM upgrade without any fuzz.
Log on to I-mate (or whatever) and download the latest ROM. Reboot both the PC and the Magician and execute the installer. After about 20 minutes, you are done.
You'll want to have access the Extended ROM, where all the standard settings and programs are stored. To do that, you will have to copy Extended ROM to a safe place, because when you have done the Big Storage thing, Extended ROM is gone, and so are these files. In order to get to the Extended ROM, you'll have to:
Hard reset the device after the ROM upgrade, as you are told on screen when the upgrade is finished. This means pushing the power button, while using the stylus on the reset button, located at the bottom of the device. The Magician resets and the setup routine begins. You are asked to perform calibration of the screen and time zone, before the OS is ready to run. Then, a few seconds after you see the Today screen, a 3 seconds countdown appears. At this exact moment you must perform a reset, which simply means pushing the button with the stylus again, this time without using the power button. Now the device will restart without installing files from Extended ROM, and more importantly, without hiding the Extended ROM.
Connect the Magician to the PC using ActiveSync and copy the folder Extended_ROM, located at root, to your SD card and make a backup on your PC. You are now technically ready to take on Big Storage...
But! Beware that If your skills are at the level you suggest, you may end up killing your Magician, instead of gaining Big Storage. This has happened to a lot of people, who then had to struggle their way into getting their device functioning again. Be absolutely sure that you are willing to take the risk, because you may end up cursing yourself for doing this.
Still happy going on? Ok... What's coming next is my edit of other peoples work, so I don't take any credit for it. Unfortunately I don't remember who wrote it either...
You will need to download and install the 'Backup Tools1' found on the FTP part of this forum, to perform the following steps. ftp://xda:[email protected]/Magician/Tools/
Backing up your current ROM:
Make sure you backup your ROM for 2 reasons. Firstly, because you will need to edit part of your ROM in order to be able to flash your Magician with the no extended ROM, and secondly, because you might need it either for flashing your phone in case of a malfunction so you can send it back under warranty with the original ROM, or for helping you to flash future upgrades.
Backing up your ROM can be done by connecting your Magician to the PC through the data cable when you first uncheck the USB connection of active sync.
If your Magician connects with ActiveSync because you didn't uncheck the USB connection in the active sync connection settings then you will not be able to backup your ROM to an SD memory card.
1. Before connecting your Magician you should bring it into the boot loader mode. This can be done by simultaneously pressing power + camera buttons and at the same time the soft reset button with the stylus.
2. After connecting your Magician to the PC through the USB in boot loader mode and having your SD card inserted into the Magician, you run romupdate.exe.
3. Then choose the USB connection in the connection settings of romupdate.exe window and click on ok. After that a terminal window will popup in that window.
4. Type d2s and press enter. Your Magician will start copying the ROM to the sd card. The screen of your Magician will be dark (no light), but you will see it counting up to 100%. When it reaches 100% it will say it is calculating the checksum. Give it some time till its done and it will say checksum ok.
5. After finishing the transfer of your ROM from your Magician to the SD card, put your SD card into an SD card reader connected to your pc. Your pc might pop up a warning message that says your SD Card is not formatted would you like to format? Click No and open a Command prompt (DOS) window.
6. Change directory to your root directory (cd c:\) and run the command ntrw read your_rom.nb1 x: where x is the drive letter of your sd card. That command will create the ROM Backup file of your ROM into your C drive root directory by the name of your_rom.nb1. Make sure you keep your_rom.nb1 in a safe place and use a copy of that file for the rest of the procedure. Note that after finishing the copy from your SD card to your_rom.nb1 file ntrw might give you an error, just don’t pay attention to it.
Patching you ROM:
1. Use Hex Editor to open the your_rom.nb1 file on your PC
2. Use the FIND function to locate "02 00 00 80 00 20 20 00 00" and change it to "02 00 00 b8 01 20 20 00 00". Note that this is a hex search, not ascii, so enter the search as 'Bytes'. You will find this pattern twice inside your ROM, and both should be changed.
Transferring your no extended ROM File from your hard disk to the sd card:
1. Get the fixed no extended ROM file to your C drive root directory run the command ntrw write fixed.nb1 x: in the command prompt window where fixed.nb1 is the filename of your fixed ROM and x the SD card drive letter. Wait till it finishes and move to the final step.
Flashing the Fixed no extended ROM to your Magician:
1. Put your SD card into your Magician and get your Magician to boot loader mode again (power+camera+reset buttons). On your unlighted screen you will see it says serial wait and after some seconds it will say (Press Power to flash).
2. Do as it says and it will start flashing. When your Magician reaches 100% flashing, it will check the checksum. Don't worry about the message Checksum failed - Flashing failed and soft reset your Magician. Please notice that the first boot may take something like 5 minutes, so don't worry about it.
When your device reboots, you now have a Big Storage Magician! If you need parts of the Extended ROM installed, like fax, MMS or whatever, you can simply click on the files inside the Extended_ROM folder you backed up earlier and they will install.
My guess is that by now you will have realized that there IS no easy way to get the Big Storage. Even though it sounds harder than it is, it does take some time and care to perform right.
There are other ways to do Big Storage, but this is the clean way. You don't have to rely on patchers, and you won't have your boot screen turned into something that another user think looks cool. This is the real deal with only 4 bytes getting changed, and you know for sure you'll have the right Extended ROM available as a backup, and that is as good as it gets!
WOW!! This is excellent and very well done. I am glad to be learning so much about these ROM's. Two questions before I tackle this(I know Im such a newbie)
Give me a couple days and I will report back on my progress.

Im soooo sick of having no memory, so I hope it is!

hey just a quick question thatnls a lot for the write up
what size sd card do you have to use
i used a 256 (only have that or a 1gig one) and the boot loader comes up with a message rom size too small

I tried using my 1 gig card and the hex editor wouldn't open it as it was too large (The rom will be the same size as your card). I then found the patch to automatically apply the big storage and it worked a treat. I don't have a 256 but I heard a fair few people use it for their upgrades....
HBK is the king. He's danish
good going babyy.. *thumbs up*..
i cant wait to reach home and try the procedure...
after waiting for so long, i finally got home, and sat down to install bigstorage by my new 256 mb card... but the problem isnt solved... why does it say 'card initialize is fail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'.. maaan im soo fuked..

SD 128MB
It was almost the same with me? some errors with my SD 512 Kingston (back up done well, asking push the power, but after romupdate & ntrw nothing happen ), after the card died, was finding another one about friends. It was 128 mb Trancend good one. I did it with my 12.128.12 on MDA-Compact? then upgraded radio till 13 about month ago!
when i try to copy my modifiedrom.nb1 to the SDcard through ntrw... it says... 'the semaphore timeout period has expired'... wot does it mean?.. had it not copied rom to the sd card?... or shud i just ignore it.??.. reply as soon as possible..
Just wanted to know can this method of changing the hex code work on all the ROMs, like even ones that may be released in the future?? Or does the Hex code change for ech ROM version??
And what actually are you doing when you change 02 00 00 80 00 20 20 00 00 to 02 00 00 b8 01 20 20 00 00??

Will this work for the imate JasJar?
Sorry, to ask such a basic question, but this is all very new to me. I've been reading the site for the past week or so trying to get a handle on all the information. I definately want to remove the EXT_ROM from my JasJar to free up as much memory as possible. Will the procedure listed above (HUGE Thanks to HBK) work for my iMate JasJar? Thanks.
P.S. I do realize that this is a "JAM" thread, sorry for the overlap. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what is meant by "cooking" (which I'm guessing means "modifying"). Any help is definately appreciated.
card initialize is fail!!!
Hi guys, i also got the same prob with Castiwo ..card initialize is fail!!! i used SD 128MB Sandisk.. how to work it out? many tks
I've got a question. I understand that if you did the BigStorage patch, and then you restored from a backup when you didn't have the BigStorage patch, you'd have only wasted your time getting the BigStorage as everything would be over-written.
So here's my question. Does it work the other way around? I mean, if for example you had a backup (from Sprite, xBackup, or whatever else software) from where you had a BigStorage patch, then you restore from that backup onto a Magician with the original, unpatched ROM, would it work?

[Q] Zeroing out my ESN and MEID values in QXDM

First, sorry about my english, i don't write a good english but i can understand and read very well , this is my first time writing on the forum, but i read so much.. , this is the thing i have a problems , when i'm doing this part " Now carefully copy a MEID or ESN to "Address" field and press enter. Example: 0x108D8FE0," On the Tab of Memory Viewer on the QXDM Numbers comes up automatically , and if I put my esn or meid number, do not present anything new "..., so that's why i can't get my flipped meid to change for 00, is supposed to show me the FLIPPED ESN or MEID like says Find your FLIPPED ESN or MEID address in the string and change ONLY those values to 00 (zero's),
What i'm doing wrong ? ,
I'm putting sequence of the esn meid wrong?
this is my meid 18:46:35.927 meid = 0x00E1000017JDF77C
Meid: E1000017JDF77C
Flipped: 7C F7 JD 17 00 00 E1
What is the correct way to put my meid or esn in the, Address's box of the Memory Viewer?
Thanks you

In china,edit ESN is common.
In china, the smartphone is very expensive.
So we edit ESN,IMSI,AKEY,AN,AAA,to use Sprint or Verizon phone in China.I can help you to Zero ESN and MEID.
You can visit diypda.com for help in write these code to phone, but it's Chinese.
P.S. Sorry for my bad English.
I'm having trouble with QXDM myself. Everytime I boot up the program my phone automatically reboots. Does anyone know how to fix this? It happened when I tried to look up my ESN in memory viewer

any help?
In america changing/cloaning esn's is illegal.
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk
Your phone is rebooting because your accessing a memory address that doesn't exist. On the shift, there are three narrow ranges of addresses that you have to do the tedious task of searching for which take a few hours to get with trial and error since you have to wait for the phone to reboot and put back in diag mode and connect to qxdm again
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA Premium App
Thanks, but it reboots the time I start the phone in diag mode. I don't get the chance to do anything in QXDM.
Changing the ESN is not illegal when you own your phone.

Exit memory viewer and go into DIAG again.
I got it. Now after I have zeroed out I'm getting a constant reboot; probably try reflashing to stock image.
try airplane mode, in diag mode try and reinstall diag drivers, keep rebooting and trying again my evo shift was doing this and thats how i got it to work. sd card has no effect i think airplane mode actually helped. if your info loads in cdma workshop your set if not keep trying youll get it. mine just stopped acting up
Does Evo Shift have AKEY? I've used CDMA Workshop, DFS, and UniCDMA. I get a failed read every time. Just on the AKEY.

I read the same guide you did. For clarification for others, do NOT put your flipped esn into the address field. All that will accomplish is rebooting your phone because it is an invalid address. There are much better write ups on this forum, I recommend not using the one quoted as the instructions are poor and incomplete.

unlock galaxy s 4g (vibrant) super problems

hi there experts
i am having a hard time sim unlocking this particular phone. i have no idea what else to do.
the applications by DaGentooBoy do not work. the code comes back NULL
there is no nv_data.bin file anywhere to be found in the phone
i tried the BML5 method, but the string is nowhere to be found in that file.
it seems that the t-mobile galaxy s 4g phone do not have this unlock code incorporated in.
i have tried Galaxy_s Unlock took from the market but it always gives an error saying that i have a problem with busybox. i have tried it on rooted 2.2 froyo the phone came with. i have 2.3.6 gingerbread on right now (stock from samsung loaded with kies and rooted with superoneclick 2.2) but no go same issues. i tried installing different busybox versions. still nothing. i have tried other roms, still nothing. the developers of galaxy_s unlock tool say that there are issues with busybox and droid2.2, but it does not work on 2.3.4, 2.3.6. nothing works.
i have tried and unlocked an att captivate with the galaxy_s unlock tool after root. that phone also had the codes coming up NULL and no nv_data.bin files, but it works with galaxy_s unlock tool.
i am reading here (http://techlab102.com/samsung-galaxy-s-carrier-unlock/) that the t-mobile vibrant phone has a bunch of bloatware that prevents busybox from installing correctly or at all. they said they installed some manager and uninstalled this bloatware, but fails to says which ones. i am looking at a ton of stuff in the phone with the manager, and i have no idea what to uninstall in order for the busybox to install correctly anf for glagy_s unlock tool to work.
if anybody can point me in a direction that would allow me to do this i would really appreciate it. thank you very much.
jmecherul
EDIT: this is the galaxy s 4g from t-mobile (no the vibrant). is it possible that the nv_data.bin files is somewhere else in the phone no in the usual spot?
The nv_data.bin should be found in
/efs/root/afs/settings.
i dont recommend the apps as ive tried them, and all of them nulled my imei. (maybe thats just me).
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA Premium App
i found it
wondering why the nv_data.bin is in that folder instead of just /efs on the galaxy s 4g. funny.
If your imei is already null and you have no backup of the efs folder or even the nv_data.bin, im sorry i cant help you, you should ask a true expert.
If you do have a backup of the original unedited nv_data.bin, youre in luck.
Step 1: delete the nv_data.bin file from the original folder.
Step 2: move the backup of the nv_data.bin file you have into the original folder.
Step 3: open up your hex editor of choice, and go to the nv_Data.bin file. Hit options, jump to address ->1468 after the ff, you will see 01 00 00 00. (these numbers represent the locks. 01 is the network lock.)
change the 01 to 00. Save it, and close hex editor.
Step 4: delete the nv.md5 file located in the same folder as the nv_bin file.
Step 5: reboot.

i see where it is now. i did read that procedure with the nv_data.bin on the website, but seemed complicated and i thought the file is somewhere else. but, follower the procedure and worked like a charm. thanks
hi LIGHT
thanks for the heads up. my imei was fine. i suppose by NULL you mean that it shows NULL instead of the 16 digits in settings/about phone/status. it was never the case with mine. i am a little bit of an idiot because i was trying to do it the easy way using the software instead of dipping my toes into a little bit of linux stuff. the procedure was right there in front on me (there is a big post about it) but mentions the software below the hard way. but, got it working and now shows network unlocked and takes other sims.
it is kind of funny how the att captivate worked with the GALAXY_S UNLOCK software and the S 4G does not. it seem that t-mobile is doing something funky. although, it just struck me that i could have called t-mobile and ask them for an unlock code, but i kind of wanted to do it myself.
thanks anyway. it is much appreciated
By null, i mean 0000000000000000.
But glad you figured it out.

Need help with rooting and unlocking I5800

Hello everyone. I'm new here and I'm trying to unlock my I5800.
I have spent several hours reading and experimenting and at this point I'm extremely frustrated with my phone.
Some brief history:
1. I rooted my phone using z4root. I suppose it was successful because...
2. I installed custom rom (Destiny) and it worked. I used Odin.
3. I wanted to go back to default rom so I installed I5800XXJPQ.
Now I want to unlock it. I followed this guide. I managed to get a hold of nv_data.bin and edit it with hex editor, but I couldn't find 0x181468 or FF 01 00 00 00 00 46 46.
I managed to find FF FF FF 01 00 00 00 00 in two places. I edited 01 to 00 in first place, second place and both places and saved them as 3 separate files to test out which .bin works correctly.
When I used Terminal Emulator, it didn't allow me to run "rm /efs/nv_data.bin". When I type "su" it doesn't work at all. I guess I don't have access to superuser.
Then I used Root Check Basic and it says my phone is not rooted at all. How is that possible if I managed to install custom rom?
I used this thread for help with rooting.
Now, my question is how do I properly root and how do I get superuser access so I can continue steps to unlock it?
Thanks for help and I hope this won't get locked because, like I said, I spent hours reading and experimenting and couldn't find a solution.

My ESET Smart Security detects multiple threats, should I worry?
It also detects z4root as Android trojan.
Ignore the virus alerts and don't use z4root on android 2.2. It only works on android 2.1
Press thanks if I helped.

Installing custom roms doesnt require rooting..you can use odin going to download mode..and all
the custom roms are prerooted by default..
one thing you can do is use z4root and select root permanently again..it worked for me.. or
do the unlocking procedure in custom rom itself as it comes
pre-rooted..
That would explain a lot of things. There's so much I don't know...
I rooted v2.1 and then it didn't work on v2.2.
How does factory reset affect rooted state and unlocking of the phone?
Once I successfully root v2.2, will I have superuser (su) privilege in Terminal Emulator?
What exactly is "adb shell"?
And lastly, is there Android newer than v2.2 for I5800? I know there isn't officially, but maybe some custom rom based on it?
And thanks everyone so far. It feels good when there's someone to enlighten you after you hit a brick wall.
No problems man..we are always there to help you out with the one we know..
Yes there are quite a lot of versions > 2.2 like gingerbread(2.3) ice cream sandwich (4.0) and jelly bean too (4.1.1) and we are lucky to have talented devs here who do all the hard work to make this aweasome phone beyond awesome i would suggest you to go for cyanogenmod 2.3 in the development thread as it is almost complete compared to other versions.
If you root your phone then ofcourse you can use termimal emulator..try entering command "su" in the window and you also need an app called as superuser which upon entering su in terminal emulator will prompt you for confirmation to allow or not..if you install custom roms then by default you will have all these things...
here is the link for cyanogenmod 2.3
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101218
here is the link which says about rooting and since z4root doesnt work on froyo use superoneclick..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872488
Looks interesting, I'll give it a whirl.
So I can install that rom, unlock the phone and, if I don't like the rom, revert back to default v2.2 and still have it unlocked?
If you revert back to stock 2.2 it will be locked again
Click thanks if I helped.
Well, I managed to root default v2.2 and gain superuser privileges to attempt the unlocking process.
I followed steps 1-2 from the beginning of this thread.
Like I said earlier, I couldn't find 0x181468 or FF 01 00 00 00 00 46 46 in my nv_data.bin so I looked for FF FF FF 01 00 00 00 00.
I found in in two places, so I edited first place, second place and both places (three separate nv_data.bin files).
I did this for the first nv_data.bin (with first FF FF FF 01 00 00 00 00 edited to FF FF FF 00 00 00 00 00):
Code:
su
rm /efs/nv_data.bin
rm /efs/nv_data.bin.md5
cat /sdcard/nv_data.bin >> /efs/nv_data.bin
chmod 755 /efs/nv_data.bin
chown radio.radio /efs/nv_data.bin || chown 1001.1001 /efs/nv_data.bin
reboot
Didn't help.
Then I did the same thing for second nv_data.bin and got stuck at the third line from the code.
I figured all I need to do is copy the file from SD card to /efs followed by those chmod and chown commands (don't know what they do) but that didn't help either.
What am I doing wrong?
I meant steps 1-3.
Also, which commands do I use to return backup of nv_data.bin? I have it on my computer.
What do rm and cat commands do? Maybe I couldn't copy other versions of nv_data.bin because there were existing ones?
Confused.

I see, thanks.
Does anyone know answer to the rest of my questions? Does firmware version have anything to do with it?
I installed I5800XXJPQ but it says I5800XXJP4 in about phone.
Now I'm downloading (hopefully) proper I5800XXJPQ and I5800XWJPI.
When I flash another firmware, does nv_data.bin change/restore?
SUCCESS!
It worked on I5800XWJPI. Here's what I did:
1. Used Odin to flash to I5800XWJPI.
2. Used SuperOneClick to root.
3. Installed Terminal Emulator and Superuser.
4. Followed instructions from this thread (line "rm /efs/nv_data.bin.md5" didn't work).
5. Voilà!
Thanks to everyone who helped. Hours of trying and experimenting has finally paid off.
If you install any custom rom the rom is by default rooted!!! If you dont like it u can flash the official Un rooted rom's and then root it
Point to be noted all custom roms are rooted by default...
I have 2 new questions, somewhat related to the thread.
1. First of all, after I installed few applications on my I5800, certain other applications that used to work (such as root uninstaller and root check basic) no longer work, they just get stuck on blank screen and I have to kill them with task manager.
2. Which Froyo firmware is the best? I currently have I5800XWJPI which is for Holland, but I switched the language to English. However, it has certain applications that firmware for my region doesn't have. I removed them using root uninstaller. Which version is known to be fast, stable, reliable and with as less bloatware as possible?
I don't know the answer to the first question but because it started happening randomly i think you should restart the phone, wipe the apps data/cache, uninstall the app and reinstall it. Hopefully that should work. For the second question, there is no definite answer but from my own experience i prefer PuruMod v3.0 as it's very stable, it's not overclocked so it doesn't drain battery and hurt the CPU and even though it's not overclocked it's blazing fast!

Try fixing permissions either by rom manager or recovery menu

I used mobile2mobile.net
Putting the code is easy, when you insert the sim and start the tablet it will ask for the code to unlock.

Looks like your sim is not inserted correct. For me I have to push it in using a pin to push it deep enough.

You have to root your device and change nv_data.bin file.
Try this:
1. Copy nv_data.bin file from efs folder to your PC
2. On your PC open nv_data.bin in a hex editor (XVI32 or similar), go to hex address 181468, you should see FF 01 00 00 00
3. change 01 (after FF) to 00 (it's a network lock flag) and save
4. On your tab: delete nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5 from efs folder and put modified one. Then reboot device.
Put you sim card and enjoy
