I just got my Samsung Skyrocket today and I have the Datapro 4G with tether plan but I can't for the life of me figure out how to actually tether it, there doesn't seem to be any official AT&T tethering app and none of the ones on the market work since the phone's not currently rooted, does anyone know how to do it?
Go to Settings > Wireless and Network > Tethering & Portable Hotspot

I know that T-Mobile charges for Wifi Hotspot and USB Tethering. However, I was wondering that since I'm rooted and running CM7, which has tethering and hotspot options available, will T-Mobile know that I'm running these processes or is it free for me since I'm not running their software on my G2?
So I currently own a Thunderbolt on Verizon as well as a wifi only galaxy tab and a wifi only xoom.
I also have a G2X on a 2 week trial. I was going to transfer me and my gf's phones over from Verizon.
I have my G2X rooted already and I have wireless tether installed. It works but my Xoom and my Galaxy tab won't recognize it. I'm assuming this is because it's running in ad-hoc mode and not infrastructure.
If this something that can be changed with kernal upgrade or custom roms or will this phone forever broadcast ad-hoc? This is pretty important to me as it's one of my primary purposes for switching to tmobile. (4g in my area vs none for verizon as well as battery life.)
all the 3 version is infrastructure mode the 2 version is in ad hoc. try it out should work not sure yet tho. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I feel like a tard now actually. I'm so used to having verizon I didn't realize that T-Mobile didn't take out the stock android mobile hotspot app.
Does anyone know if t-mobile makes you sign up for a tethering plan to use it? I was able to fire it up and connect both my Xoom and my galaxy tab just fine.. just don't want a suprise in my bill.

Just use it.
If you got error page, you simply add tethering option or just change browser agent (but I don't think you'll get in trouble if you tether with Android tablets).
As long as you have an unlimited data package youll be fine...they have a 2gig & 5gig. Once you go over those limits it will still work, just not as fast as before you went over the data cap. No issues with mine tho, my hotspot works fine with various devices

It's not an app, it's in the wireless network settings. Same place as wifi-bluetooth and all that. Just a check box to turn it on.
Funny story about the wireless tether for root users app.
So when I posted this that it will only work in ad-hoc mode, I found a workaround for my xoom to connect before I realized there was built in hotspot. The built in hotspot works great and it's infrastructure mode, but like my thunderbolt and droid x before it, won't stay connected in my office for some reason.
I tried the wireless tether program and low and behold it stays connected firmly in my office. Must be something about it being ad-hoc because all the infrastructure mode tethering methods I've tried will not stay connected in my office.. must be some intereference or something.
just downloaded it tonight. runing great.got 4g speed tethering,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Android hacker Koush makes mobile internet tethering undetectable by carriers
http://www.slashgear.com/android-ha...-tethering-undetectable-by-carriers-02205425/
Sooo what's the difference between this one and all the other ones? Currently on my phone I have both the Wired Tether and Wireless Tether apps (neither available on the marketplace but easy to find in the right places). I've never gotten a message from ATT once about tethering - and I do it more often than not, using just the Wireless Tether app. Averaging 4 GB a month total data (tether and legit non-tether data combined)
Kudous to Koushik for getting a workaround like that, but the necessity of a laptop kind of puts the kibosh on it for me since I'd use the hotspot feature for tablets mainly.
^^ agreed. wifi tether trumps usb tether. main reason i rooted in the first place. but good to know that non root options exist.
So I'm looking at going from the Samsung Vibrant (rooted) to the new One S. One thing that I love on the Vibrant is the Mobile AP (wifi hotspot) feature from the root. Does anyone know about wifi hotspot on the One S? Is this going to be available out of the box? Additional charge to use? Or will I have to root the phone again to get "free" wifi hotspot? Thanks!
It's available out of the box, but here's the thing:
It COULD be the "rigged" hotspot that contacts T-Mo and tells them what's up. It's even called T-Mobile Hotspot in the app drawer. I'm not trusting it. I'll wait for CM9 to get better and use the native tethering that doesn't possibly phone home.
It is called "mobile hotspot" in the app drawer and yes you will need to buy the wifi tether from t-mobile for 14.99/ month. but they are offering it for free right now.
You can always root and install OpenGarden or another root-required tethering app. That may be a way to get around T-Mo's "phone-home" tethering.
I'm looking forward to CM9 becoming fully functional for this phone, and consequently, rigged-free tethering. The way it SHOULD be.
Hi there,
I have a $70 T-Mobile Unlimited Plan which includes 2.5 GB wifi tether hotspot feature.
My question is, when i was on Sprint (Rooted ROM) I was able to use the built in wifi tether feature without any limitations.
It appears on the nexus 5 (android kit kat) that the carriers now have the ability to truly monitor this useage.
Would i be able to get around it by using a 3rd party tethering app?
Anyone else had success in going over the 2.5gb wifi hotspot allowed?
It makes no sense to me why me using my data on my nexus 5 vs. tethering and using my nexus 7 should be limited.
Thanks in advance,
RR

I have the same plan...you might also have to change your apn settings to ipv4, at least I had to. btw, i'm just south of riverside, ca and although my lte speeds are over 20 mbs down, if I change the preferred network settings to hspa (3g?) instead of lte, I can stream with little to no buffering.

This should help. Read the thread and figure it out.
You will not get around the limit using a third party app (if you want it to work over wifi). It may not make any sense to you, but to providers it does because they can make money. I agree, it's dumb that they want to charge more to share a data plan you already use, but it's us vs them and they're are big wireless companies... so I don't think our complaints will go very far.
You should be happy that you do have the 2.5GB because it can be very handy in a pinch when you need to do something on laptop or tablet but no wifi available or because the available network is just straight up garbage.
But since you say you're using your tablet, have you tried bluetooth vpn with PDAnet? I used to do that for my tablet. It's not the greatest because some apps wont recognize the bluetooth as you have a "internet connection" but its worth a try. I havent used it in a while as I really dont tether much these days so I'm not sure how good it is these days.
Do this and u should be ok...no tethering limits.
how do you get to the pages shown in the thumbnails

As a new member to the family of android devices, may i ask how you made your way to that cmd page, yes i know im a noob
Install android terminal from play store open it and execute that...oh you gotta be rooted for this to work.
Not Working
This did not bypass hotspot limits on Nexus 5 "tether_dun_required". I can use bluetooth to tether.
Can anyone confirm this works? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.snclab.wifitetherrouter
