[Q] Interop-Unlock or Custom Rom for CDMA HTC Arrive - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone made any progress on Interop-Unlock or a Custom Rom for CDMA HTCs, more specifically the HTC Arrive?

I've been searching
I've been searching for a long time now. I love my Arrive. I don't think anyone is trying to work on this. I've been searching for custom roms , interop unlock , advanced configuration. But nothing. I've found nothing. Almost every other device. Has this. Or has a way to get these. But I think the arrive is dead in the water.

The Verizon HTC Trophy is in the same boat. Blame the lack of CDMA interest and the fact that the only way to interop unlock an HTC device so far on mango, is to use the HTC Configuration app which is only relevant to GSM devices. That is why the Arrive and Trophy devices haven't been broken yet. There is a team working on a unlocked bootloader for the Arrive and possibly with it the trophy so once that is released, we can get custom roms and finally have full access to our phones.
It is funny to me, how back in the WM6.x days, the CDMA Sprint Touch Pro(2) was the king of hack devices for custom roms and whatnot, and sadly I think many of those people went to Android or other carriers. It is sad since the Arrive does carry some of the TP2's legacy, but I still think both carriers should start wanting more CDMA windows phones. A CDMA HD2 never came, how about a CDMA Titan? Tempting as heck but I am not jumping ship from sprint for a phone. :/

you said it.
I agree with everything you said. I can't wait for custom roms for the Arrive. I miss my touch pro 2 it was so fun I still have it but now wp7 is in the spot light and I just want to hack the shi.... Out of it. But I'm stuck waiting for someone to unlock it. If I had the knowledge I would do it. And I know here in xda there has to be someone with that knowledge. That's why I'm waiting . Most of you senior members have that knowledge. And I know you guys will crack it. Thanks guys.

Well , CDMA Trophy (Verizon) is just fine , because it is a global device and has a bypass . It does make me worry about future devices that may not be global though .
I recently found out someone i know has the Arrive . Whenever i get a chance im going to tinker a bit with it to see if i can find any weird bugs to take advantage of like the Verizon bypass . I wouldnt EXPECT anything . It all lies in getting connection setup to run . Who knows .. maybe something can trick it ..everyone said Verizon would not work as well , and that turned out to be a simple solution .

All of us lowly Arrive users would love to have a solution to this. Especially since Sprint does not appear to want any more windows phones. At least till the fall that is.
I would be happy to help. I have a student dev-unlocked arrive running 8107.

Yeah all this because Microsoft got greedy and copied the iPhone. And they wonder why their sales suck. LOL, Microsoft just needs to admit they screwed up and give us back what Windows Moible use to be about, screw the iPhone.

Verizon customer service: No idea about 6.5 update....

I just spoke with Verizon customer service and they have no idea when or IF our Touch Pro 2 will get the Windows 6.5 ROM update.
They tell me this just as they released the same phone minus the external keyboard (Imagio) with Windows 6.5 already installed!
Guess we need to keep waiting.........
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
UPDATE: I sent HTC an email asking about the update and this is their response:
Thank you for contacting HTC about updating the Verizon Pro2 to Windows Mobile 6.5.
I understand wanting to keep the device up-to-date. Regretfully, HTC does not currently have a software update for your device. The carriers request all software updates for the devices that they offer from HTC. Once the carrier contacts HTC about updating the software or changes to the devices, HTC’s Research & Development Team work with same department from the carrier to create the software. When and update is created it is tested by the carrier and then HTC host the software on our web site for download by customers free of charge or at http://www.pcdphones.com/uts_downloads.aspx. The updates are individually adaptered for each device and carrier.
You can also visit www.hctwiki.com for self-help and to participate in a survey.
Thank you,
Kay

I wish their response was that Verizon was currently testing the new ROM. Instead, it seems that HTC has not even received the request from Verizon to get a new ROM ready....... Now I wonder if I should have gotten the Imagio instead.......
i think we are definately going to see the hspl before we see any stock 6.5 roms. and once we get the hspl then its all custom after that anyway. it woulda been fun to play with 6.5 while waiting for the hspl, but oh well
someone from ppcgeeks posted a reply from HTC Support saying they are just about to startdeveloping the new 6.5 Rom updates...so its gonna be awhile if that is true
I was talking to the Verizon guys yesterday and the one I was talking to said there were rumors of the end of this month, but it depends on something with Microsoft. I'm not so sure he understood what I was talking about though, so take it with a grain of salt hah.

Here's the cynic in me:
A: They've already sold the phone, and they're selling like hotcakes so why change it... then again why put the effort in if they weren't selling? haha
B: Funny thing about them selling out, the local "Premium VZW dealer" (Not actually verizon) doesn't stock HTC phones and only stocks blackberries as they are easier to use... which is funny because they've lost selling at least three premium phones in the last couple weeks amongst my friends.
I am getting tired of winmo bashing.
I actually talked to their tech support a few days ago and he said that it was in the cards, but there wasn't an official date yet. Perhaps they're modifying the ROM for their services *shrugs*
Nah eff that, if verizon does some stupid modifying for there server, i really hope we get a hard-spl soon. I never really cared if we did itd be nice ofcourse. But thats why verizon phones suck so much is there damn way they do there stuff.
I would imagine that they would want to push out 6.5 to the few thousand people who have 6.1 Touch Pro 2's. I'm sure they don't want to have to support both 6.5 and 6.1 on tech support as it would increase costs. Hopefully, the hold up is related to tweaks HTC and Verizon are making to fix the annoying little things. Maybe we'll see the update when the TP2's get back in stock as they probably want all of them to be the same.
I just talked with a couple of verizon business reps and its rumored internally with the company that the 6.5 rom will be released the end of OCT. Microsofts website states OCT/NOV.

It seems to me a little weird that they all of a sudden where out of stock a few days before 6.5 and the new Imagio phone. I think like on the Storm they have just taken them out of circulation and when they return the new ones will have 6.5 and we will have a new ROM. This happened twice with the Storm when it got updates to the Blackberry OS. It was out of stock for 3 weeks when the current update was rolled out then all of a sudden it was in stock again and the update was on their site. I'm kinda wandering if when we get 6.5 we are also gonna see the phone having VCast TV like the Imagio. Its probably hardware capable. Of course its been out for three years now and its still only in the same 20 markets with a promise of more to come that entire time.
why
I don't think they're going to release 6.5 for the TP2 ever. Why bother? They can't even manage their own website half the time. Obviously they don't have the resources to upgrade stuff for 'free'.
Plus, even if they did, I wouldn't bother, assuming XDA cracks this bastard.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it be HTC to release the update anyway??
Got 2 ROM ups for my Titan before, so..........

My previous Verizon phone was an XV6800 (Titan) and they came out not with one, but with TWO ROM upgrades during the time I had it, so I have hope that we will get the upgrade soon. Check this website, they have Vendors ROMS for many phones. Hopefully we will see the TP2 listed soon!

There will be a 6.5 rom update available for our phones. It's just a matter of when. Some say it could be another month or two.

Almost forgot to mention this as well, I had a titan myself, a very useful but unfortunately very underpowered phone. Anyway, in case anyone missed this, here's the estimated time for the 6.5 ROM updates for the TP2's

You stated exactly what I was going to say to him. With the XV6800 sure it was locked out of several things (e.g. GPS) and what not but all ROM updates were FREE to download from the site. Also as most have seen they have released the 6.5 ROM over in Europe, so it is only a matter of time before Verizon releases the ROM. Oh and for those that don't know it is Verizon who choose the date at which to release the ROM, HTC and Microsoft only provide the software.
Anywho...my TP2 rocks and I can't wait for the ROM to be released, 6.5 is an excellent upgrade from 6.1 as far as finger friendly, and touch screen go.

Signs of Sprint TP2 having Win. Mo 6.5, I think?

So as a fellow sprint customer and having the TP2, we all have been waiting when they will be will release Win Mo 6.5 and they keep pushing the date and pushing the date. Well i have a friend who has the Tp2 for T Mobile and that phone has Win Mo 6.5 features and its especially different then my Sprint TP2. Well about a week ago for about a sec i pressed the start menu on the top right corner and instead of it going straight to the programs menu it gave a the feature that seen Win Mo 6.5 Tp2 phones have and was wondering if anyone will know if i possibly have the update or do you think that it was some sort of test cause IDK? Any information will help
You wont have 6.5 until you download the updated ROM, when released, to your computer and flash the phone. It isnt going to magically show up in the phone.
^^ agreed!

None of which would stop you from putting any number of WinMo 6.5 roms on your phone right now. Flashing the TP2 is not rocket science and there are very stable 6.5 roms out...or questionably stable 6.5.3 roms if you're feeling adventurous.
Has anyone from the States tried the Win Mo 6.5 upgrade from HTC's site and had success with it from any carrier?

Rhodium I think, but that's for the GSM version of the phone. You might brick the CDMA version of it.
Sprint TP2 > 6.5 Update
While Microsoft recently estimated a Sprint Touch Pro2 update to 6.5/x was due February 2010, that has changed.
The MS Mobile site was updated yesterday and it now reads:
Touch Pro 2 HTC Sprint Date not yet available
I was hoping to avoid flashing (with the native HTC Messaging issues), I'm more than disappointed to have the ETA changed.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news ~
boooooo
yeah this delay kind of sucks. I hope sprint somehow pushes out a unique new 6.5 rom that's better than vzw and at&t's.

We can only hope, but I doubt it.
The day that 6.5 came out on October 22 I was checking my phone every hour trying to get my update to 6.5 not knowing that it wasn't going to be released. Oddly enough I DID get an upgrade notice, but when I went to install it I got an installation failed message. The Orange 6.5 logo popped up and everything. I was so mad when I found I wasn't going to be getting my upgrade anytime soon.
I mean I bought the Touch Pro 2 for two reasons, its keyboard and its upgrade to 6.5; so far I feel like I'm being half ass'd by Sprint and HTC.
The thing that REALLY gets me is not just that I am still waiting for the 6.5 upgrade but how much longer am I going to have to wait in order to get a 6.5.3 upgrade!? I mean forget about the possibility of a 6.6 next month, I still am waiting for 6.5! It is total bull! The only thing that keeps me satisfied is the fact that I pay $20 less a month than other carriers for a similar plan.
I'd go down to my Sprint store and complain in the hopes of getting some money back on my phone but customer service is so dead these days it would be in vein.
The only thing I am NOT looking forward to in 6.5 is the calendar app for Titanium. I love my Touchflo 3D but once I upgrade I'm going to turning it off to save some battery life. Decisions Decision, one day I'll be able to make them. :|
Sprint Touch Pro 2 update
I have an inside scoope from the local corporate store and the techs there are telling me in February 2010 they are realising the updated rom of Windows Mobile 7 for the sprint touch pro 2.
i dont know anymore about it I was trying to find out what extras if any are different than what we have.

lol...In addition to not even having WM7 betas (I bet they're not even at a full-on alpha stage), it's already known that the only [HTC] device that can support the official WM7 ROM is the HD2 due to its capacitive screen and 1Ghz CPU.
I do have a friend who works more in the corporate IT side of things at Sprint. He was the sole reason I stayed with Sprint and got my TP2 instead of moving on. What he told me he was able to find out is that Sprint is still working on enhancments to teh WinMo6.5 platform and it may acutally truly be the 6.5.3 version they have. Even he was getting mixed info and he works in the ifrastructure of the IT area.
But with all the other things that Sprint offers on their units like the NFL, Sprint Cup, enhancements to implement 4g, etc, etc, they are making certain it is as reliable as possible before releasing it. Since they've had such a black eye over the last few years due to Customer Service issues and such, they are trying to do the right thing and not tick off alot of customers by ruining their phones with an update. they have been watching the other companies that hav rolled out releases and essentially using them as beta testers.
Hopefully, when the new release comes out, everyone will think ( or at least a majority will) that it was worth the wait.

The amount of smiley faces in this post made me disregard it faster than the improper and possibly misinformed reference to Windows Mobile 6.5 as 7.

If this is the truth I'd be very pleased. We are four months into Windows Mobile 6.5 and none of us 'normal folk' have heard a peep out of Sprint about anything close to an upgrade other than a vague "Quarter 1". The way this is going I might have to start asking the question if they mean Q1 of 2010 or 2011?
All I can say is that IF when we do finally get 6.5 and it is 6.5.3 I'd be 100% satisfied with the wait I endured. I want my repositioned start button!!!
Why can AT&T, Verizon & T-Mobile get the WM6.5 update for the TP2 much earlier than Sprint? I hope the wait gives us 6.5.3 vs 6.5. I would rather have 6.5 now, vs waiting for 6.5.3 for another two months. I must use a carrier supplied released for my business.
The sprint site clearly states that 6.5 is comming in the first qtr of 2010... not 7.0
Release Date
I'm a Sprint employee and can confirm that the release date will be sometime this month (Feb. 2010). My rep didn't have any details of 6.5 or 6.5.3, but did promise a release this month.

What's the holdup with 2.2?

Another interesting tidbit from the web:
What's the Holdup with Froyo Update? We'll explain...
AT&T is trying to fill the internal SD card with as much bloat as possible, it takes time to make sure the phone will run as crappy as possible.
AT&T and Samsung are both focusing most of their time and energy on their upcoming phones revealed at CES. Samsung is notorious for their slow updates, sometimes they don't even update their phones at all. And AT&T is slow at releasing updates because of having to put all of their bloatware in there
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
The same thing that's been taking so long for it to come out since Day 1. Safe to say I'll never buy another Samsung phone again. Can't wait for the Motorola Atrix 4G to come out. Finally I'll be able to experience Android at it's fullest.

Its not Samsung!!!.. 2.2 is out in the rest of the world!! its AT&T and T-mobile.. that slow things down. Canada's Captivate got the 2.2 update... and the phone just came out their a month ago and the phone is the same as the USA Captivate.... and the other Samsung S phones got the update some over 2 months ago...

New Captivate noob....
Hello All! I have just ordered my new phone from Amazon and should receive it tomorrow. I hope to figure out how to use it as a modem for my Macbook while deployed for some military training. I have been reading as much as I possibly can about this phone and modifying it and feel like I'm trying to get a drink of water from an open fire hydrant....SO MUCH INFO !! I really appreciate the fact that you guys seem to be helpful and am looking forward to "moding" my new phone. I guess my first question is this: Is it possible to use this phone as an access to the internet for my Macbook laptop? I love this computer but didn't want the iphone 'cause it ain't apple's business (or AT&T's) with what I do with it and I don't like "Big Brother" telling me I can't put certain stuff on it. So, is there an app for using the Captivate as a modem for a Mac? Thanks and I'll deploy soon so hope to get this done by then.

You can either:
-Pay more per month (I think it's $10)
-Install a custom ROM and do it for free
But yes, you can use it as a hotspot for a laptop.

Let me know if this actually happens. I tried, twice, to order a Captivate from AmazonWireless using their 2-day shipping option. When they failed the first time they promised to send it overnight. That one showed up 6 days later and was refused since I had already gone and bought one on sale at Radio Shack. They suck.
Funny reading that article - they make it sound as though the delay is being blamed on the z4root app. seriously? no matter what they do to the next vers. of android. we will root it
Bottom line is these updates are an extremely low priority for Samsung. Dev's here at XDA put together roms in a matter of days and they do it by hacking apart official (or leaked) software from other phones. Imagine if they had access to the driver and kernel source code like Samsung does? Imagine if they were the people who built the hardware and knew all the ins and outs of it? I realize that Samsung has to test their updates a LOT more than dev's here (where we are often the testers), but its been 6 months since the phone's release and over a year since Froyo's release. Not to mention that Samsung has an IT team whereas dev's here are usually 1 person working in their spare time.
Also I wanted to mention that I don't think that AT&T adds the bloatware themselves; I believe Samsung does it according to AT&T's wishes. The few leaked froyo updates we got for the captivate were AT&Tified with bloat and all. Since those were leaks and not nearly done, there is no way they went to AT&T to add in the bloat. Now, that doesn't mean AT&T can't delay the process. I'd imagine they get a chance to test any firmware Samsung gives them and they can reject it back Samsung, wasting more time.
One last point...Why aren't Android versions more independant of drivers and software? When I upgraded Windows from Vista to 7, everything worked right out of the box. It seems like Samsung would have to switch the Android base, fix a few things, test and release? I have no idea why these updates are so complicated that they should take months to complete...

This is what baffles me. Windows runs on all kinds of different hardware configurations with hardware components from hundreds of different manufacturers. Are these phones so very different that each brand and model requires its own specific variant of Android? Isn't that the complete opposite of what Google hoped to accomplish with Android?
I also don't think AT$T do much, if any, of the actual device testing themselves. I think they simply state their demands to the individual manufacturers as far as what bloatware they want on the phone (and what features they prefer to be crippled). They may develop the bloatware, but the OS is the device manufacturer's responsibility. That said, AT$T is just as culpable for the delay of Froyo since they can bring the pressure to bear to get it done if they really wanted to.

MS have hardware requirements, so they know it will run when they release an update. But at&t stopped htc from giving out an update to the fuze so they could sell the tilt 2 to more people

Its probably been said but it's not $am$ung anymore, its AT$T. They have 2.2 but they are "testing" (filling it with bloatware).
Sent from my Galaxy S Captivate...still no Froyo...
To be honest, now that Roger's release Froyo for their Captivate, there is no point to continue to wait for the AT&T release. The Roger's version even has WiFi hotspot, tethering, and the option to install non-market apps out of the box. This is what I am running with a few tweaks here and there. No complaints.
I have come to the conclusion that I will not buy another branded handset from AT&T ever again. I also will probably not by a Samsung product again for a while as well.
The only reason I want a Stock Froyo release for the captivate is to get Samsung to release the GPL required kernel source. With this, our devs can make ROMS that are faster, and more stable. I am HOPING that the release of Rogers 2.2 firmware means that this source code release is imminent. Otherwise we may have to get involved with pestering Samsung to put the source out.

Not sure where you saw that. It was not a AT&T or HTC decision. Microsoft only allowed official WM 6.5 updates for phones with the "Windows" button on them. Since the Fuze had a "home" button, it did not qualify for WM 6.5. If AT&T had held it back, then other Raphael, Diamond, and/or Blackstone handsets (Verizon TP, etc) would have gotten WM 6.5. In fact none of the Raphael, Diamond, or Blackstone phones got WM 6.5.

Thanks for the quote. I find it interesting that boborone admits that Microsoft has hardware requirements but doesn't realize that one of Microsoft's hardware requirements for WM 6.5 was that a 'Windows" button was required.
Honestly, I don't know if AT&T has ever blocked a software/firmware upgrade from a manufacturer in order to sell new phones, but I doubt they make enough money by blocking an update to a 1 year old phone to make any difference. As most people have 2 year contracts, they are not going to upgrade after only 1 year. The iPhone seems to be the notable exception to this, but by allowing iPhone users to upgrade to a new version at a discounted rate after 1 year, AT&T is losing more money than by keeping them on the their old iPhone for an extra 6-12 months. AT&T allows early upgrades in order to extend contracts before they expire and garner customer loyalty. Whether or not my 1 year old Fuze got WM 6.5 or not, I still waited 18 months before upgrading to get the extra discount and the availability of official (or un-official) WM 6.5 for my phone had no impact on my decision...it was all about the extra $50 discount.
In short, I don't think the availability (or lack there-of) of Froyo for the Captivate has anything to do with AT&T trying to make money by getting users to replace the Captivate with a phone that runs Froyo, especially since as of today, the only AT&T phone running Froyo is still the Aria which is a cheaper phone, and even when the Atrix/Infuze/Inspire are released, no Captivate owners (that purchased a Captivate with their new phone discount) will qualify for a new phone yet. Delaying or refusing an update to the Captivate (when other SGS phones are getting Froyo) is much more likely to cost AT&T in the long term as dissatisfied customers go to other carriers.
By far the most likely cause of the delay is exactly what has been said (you just need to read between the lines a little). Samsung said that the delay was due to "complexity issues" last week, and this week the delay is to ensure a "smooth upgrade." Those two pieces of information combined with all the reported upgrade problems on other SGS phones and Kies Mini frequently having issues recognizing that a phone is plugged in cause "complexity" and would result in an upgrade that is not "smooth" for the customers.
The Kies mini problems have to be addressed, and since the US is the only country that uses Kies mini, it only affects US carriers. For me, Kies mini only recognizes my phone about 10% of the time on a Windows XP machine. On my Windows 7 machine, Kies (full version 1.5.0.80) recognizes when my phone is plugged in 100% of the time (even when I do not select Kies for the connection).

New sticky for noobs?

I Moved from a Treo 650 to a Sprint Mogul then switched out for an Android G1 that i upgraded to an iPhone 3GS and then an Atrix 4G and now I have probably my favourite phone to date (excepting the SE T616- legendary!) an HTC Titan.
I am familiar with custom ROMs, unlocking bootloaders and jailbreaking.
Outside of steps to developer unlock legit (woohoo for my edu address!) I have seen very little information on how to get this baby purring.
I am volunteering to write a how-to on the parts I accomplished but I still don't know how to do things like install custom ROMs and get interop-unlock working.
Anyone care to assist?
Sent from my PI39100 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
On second-gen HTC phones, like the Titan, neither custom ROMs nor interop-unlock are currently available. HTC appears to be putting some effort into keeping it that way, too... we're working on it, but nobody has had a breakthrough yet. These things take time, and there aren't that many people really trying to break open the devices. Of those who are, for some of us it's just one of many projects.

Wanting an 8X for VZW.

Hello all!
I've always been exclusively Android and never even thought about trying iOS.
But when MS put out WindowsPhone 8 I was extremely curious.
Now I'm about to grab an 8X off of eBay just to try it out!
Some things to know:
I'm on Verizon
I may want to "hack" this thing (I used to flash ROMs and kernels all day with my old Galaxy Nexus)
I have a lot of Google stuff i.e. Play Music, Drive etc..
Things I need to know:
Will this phone get WP 8.1?
Are there problems with the 8.1 Developer Preview once installed? (with the LTE or Beats Audio functionality or anything)
Are there benefits from unlocking these phones like free tethering and whatnot?
Thanks in advance!
Cheers!
I don't know much about this phone. I just got one as well.
But it seems to me that it's the complete opposite of a galaxy nexus : everything is blocked, impossible to flash downgrades, community is therefore not very interested in a phone that HTC didn't intend for "hack"
On the other hand I think it will officially get 8.1. And its a really nice phone I think (I use a nexus 4 as my daily one).
And for Google stuff use a Google phone (no gmail app on wp)
I have one branded and blocked. Kind of discouraging when you've easily flashed thousand of ROMs on other devices..

Hey thanks for replying!
But yeah I assumed most Windows Phones would be locked up. Especially compared to a stock Android phone like a Nexus.
I just thing it would be cool to try out. I don't ever get much facetime with anything WP related.
Would make for an interesting change! I'll keep my Moto X around for sure though.
As someone with the TMO branded device, It is a nice phone. The Developer Preview for 8.1 has known issues with configuring CDMA devices. (it will be fixed in the final release).
As far as Windows Phone goes, it is perfectly hackable, it just comes down to sheer volume....Most people with a Windows Phone have a Lumia, so there are more people working on that. There are a couple of ways to load custom/other firmware for some variants of the 8x. (Most people have been posting in the WP8 General forum)
Also, HTC and Microsoft have both announced that the phone will be getting an official update to Windows Phone 8.1.
Hope that helps!
