Can't mount sdcard - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I just upgraded to GB 2.3.6 and then rooted by installing a new kernel via odin. I went in and tried to do a nandroid backup and it brings up an error that it can't mount the sdcard. Did i do something wrong or is my card going bad?

Interesting. If you use the 'Files' application when the phone is running does it show you anything? It should display the files/folders on the sdcard.

Yes I can see all my files and such just not in recovery

maybe do a fix permissions? I'm wondering if they somehow got hosed & prevent CWM from mounting.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App

Nope fixing permissions did nothing for it. It still brings up can't mount sdcard error. i can't install any zip files too, same error
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium

What was the phone running before you upgraded? Did you have CWM, voodoo, etc?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App

Try backing up your SD card and then reformat it to see if that fixes the error

agreed back up sd card, maybe try changing voodoo, then is that doesn't work reformat and good to go

Can't format the scard on the phone since it won't mount. any other ideas. i am not sure what i am doing with voodoo so didn't mess with that.

If your computer, Wii, or whatever can mount the sdcard you could format it that way.
Have you tried shutting the phone down, removing the SD card, and putting it back?
Do you have the Android SDK installed? If so, put the phone in USB debugging mode, crank up a shell (adb shell), and type:
mount
If the filesystem is actually able to mount the phone during normal operation you will see a line similar to this (note it's all actually 1 line):
/dev/block/vold/179:1 /mnt/sdcard vfat rw,dirsync,nosuid,nodev,noexec,noatime,nodiratime,uid=1000,gid=1015,fmask=0002,dm
ask=0002,allow_utime=0020,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,utf8,errors=remount-ro 0 0
If you see that, try these commands:
cd /
ls -l sdcard
That should show you the effective permissions on the sdcard, like this:
ls -l sdcard
lrwxrwxrwx root root 2011-11-20 10:16 sdcard -> /mnt/sdcard
The 'l' means it's a symbolic link (shortcut, in essence) to another place (/mnt/sdcard)
The rwxrwxrwx are the permissions (read, write, execute). You see it three times because permissions are listed for user (rwx) group (rwx) and global (rwx).
The 'root root' is the owner and group for that directory.
If you were able to execute the command, do your permissions & ownership look the same?

Are you asking if TB is working for any of us, or are you referring to SD card issues?
Could you clarify your question?
If you mean that under stock 3.2 external1 is not writeable by default then yes you may have issues with TB.
Mine was backing up only data to external1 no apps.
There is a thread which shows some adb commands to get external writeable but you have to do it on every boot.
So I'll find that link and post it here. My advise is do that, TB backup and then flash the new 2.0 rom
Edit: right I found something else, now I have not tried this as I don't need to any more but someone has written an app
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1173195
Other than that, you can do long hand, what I did
adb shell or any other terminal emulator to get to a shell on the xoom
su to get to the # prompt
umount /mnt/external1 mount -t vfat -o fmask=0000,dmask=0000,rw /dev/block/platform/sdhci- tegra.2/mmcblk0p1 /mnt/external1

New SD card coming.g in the mail

Ok, so finally accustommed to a galaxy s 4g after switching from a vibrant I got my rom installed, the cwm, the lighting zap and everything else. How ever my brother bought me a bigger microsd card for Christmas and its in the mail. Im just curious. Will I be able to put that SD card in and I'm good to go or do I have to reflash cwm or something?

You should copy all contents from your current SD card to the new one, in case settings and APPS are stored there."pretty sure they are"
What's the best way to format the new.card for use with the Roms were using.

If you're on a windows computer you can just go to my computer and right click your sd card, format and pick fat32.
So there's no ext4 formatting like for the system partition. What if you're on a Mac? Wouldn't you format as Unix file system or just ms-dos. This overwrites the ext4 partition on the card?

You could format it ext4 on Linux (not sure about MacOS but probably), however, the kernel in your phone must support ext4 - like you mentioned with the system partiton on voodoo kernels. You might have to go on and manually change the mount table on the phone so thay it mounts it ext4.vs. vfat/fat32.

I just got my 32GB cl 4.
I moved all contents from my old (including a backup of my EFS) to my external HD.... formatted it (using the phones storage settings).
Powered off my phone.
Put in my new microSD and rebooted... the necessary Android files show up automatically... I then moved all my important files over as a copy/paste from the external HD.
Rebooted... then went into recovery and made sure voodoo was enabled. It was... no issues.. running great.

[Q] File System question

I performed a Factory Reset / Wipe and was under the impression this cleared everything off the Xoom that I had added. Upon looking at the /mnt/sdcard folder I see folders of Apps that I had previously installed.
Question
Can the /mnt/sdcard be formatted ? If so how ?
Not super familiar with the whole file system setup so If this is a noob/stupid question could you please explain things for me.

There are two ways that I know of that I personally have done just in the last week or so. First you can unmount the SD card from the Xoom and place it in an Android Cell Phone, and go to settings/storage and from there unmount the card and click reformat SD card. Or you can hook the Xoom up via USB and clear it from within the PC/mac. Hope this helped.

Nope that would be for the micro USB card this is the /mint/sdcard which is part of the internal memory

Fastboot -w wipes all user data including /mnt/sdcard I lost some pictures of my dog because of it
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
The simplest way I know of is thru the Backup/Restore options in CWM, just doing the wipes won't do it. I use the Team Rogue version of CWM tho, i don't remember off hand if it can be done in the other recovery's (i.e. Rom Managers version or the one from solarnz that is most popular).
I just, personally, like the way the menus are laid out with Team Rogue's version and not having like a dozen No's with one Yes when confirming an action, nothing against the others.
Thanks guys I will try the Fastboot -w when at home and able to use it and Team Rogue's Recovery when at work.
Its been awhile but what is the option in Team Rogue recovery I dont see one to wipe the Internal data

File manager not reading external or internal

I'm rooted and running cm9 stable. For some reason after flashing cm9 no file manager is working. Anyone else having this issue? Is it because I'm rooted?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
What file managers have you tried? What is the exact error? What happens when you try?
I've tried astro, es, root explorer. And no error pops up its just I can't read any files like I use to on stock. When I got to my external sd there's nothing there. And I know it's there because everything is have on my sd card is on my phone. Very annoying. I've tried almost all file managers. I'm running cm9.

Can you verify that both /sdcard and /emmc are empty as per the file managers? Can you access the data (lets say pictures) via the gallery app?
Yes I have music, pictures, and video on sd and I can access them all on the gallery/media player

Please verify that /emmc and /sdcard mounting points are empty via file manager of choice.
Also what this feels like to me is that you are not aware of the way CM9 mounts your Internal/External SD cards.
Internal Memory: /emmc
External SD: /sdcard
Now you will have a folder called "external_SD" on your memory card, this is a left over from stock and will not function as before.

I did not that all the files did that emmc somewhere. So I can view my external and internal now?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
Not sure what you're trying to say but /emmc is the internal memory and /sdcard is external SD card.
You probably are not seeing your files because they are all in the /emmc "folder" (which used to be called sdcard when you were on a stock rom)
In ES File Explorer go to "Settings" > "Root Settings“ and mark the "Up to Root" option.
Exit settings you should see "/sdcard" at the top of the app.
Press the "UP" button on the toolbar, it will now display "/" at the top of the app.
Congratulations, you have made it to the very top level of your devices file system.
You will find "emmc" and "sdcard" which are your internal and external "memory card" locations.
Shazam.
If for any reason you don't see this, attach a screen shot at each step and add them to this post.

I don't use Astro so I cannot guide you but I can say you need to get to /emmc or /sdcard. You either have to go up to the root filesystem "/" or access the "folders" directly via "/emmc" or "/sdcard" I don't know how many times I can say it.

All that process are in mnt folder...root your phone than you can checked
Mnt folder there are sdcard and 0 folder..op mention to move from sdcard to 0 folder...In 0 folder you'll have another sdcard that you'll paste all file...
Using terminal command is more easier.

I also did it manually... But it does not work... I moved all files and folders to 0, when I reboot then, nothing had changed. By the way I use newest Thunderzap kernel with internal storage fix
You sure about this?
Try checking by connecting your phone to the laptop. Do you still see only 2 GB?
No. My computer shows 4gb, I don't know whats wrong
Edit:
but in settings of my phone it just show 2gb..
but when I have a look on root explorer, it shows me the internal 4gb storage. but I can´t move apps to it. And file commander shows the 4gb storage as internal storage aswell, and file comander works without root... I am so confused..
and I have to add that the 4gb internal storage is shown as "sdcard" in root explorer. The microsd card is shown there as "sdcard1"..
it shows that way only. As sd card for the internal storage. That is normal. You have access to the 4gb storage now. You can wait till someone gets that up so perfectly for the setting screen.
