Xoom 3G as a working phone - possible? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I got a hands-on on the Xoom 3G (T-Mobile Germany) of a workmate the other day and I'm quite impressed! Nice tablet and nice features of Honeycomb. But that got me thinking: There's a 3G receiver - is it possible to phone with this thing? I mean not via VoIP/G-Talk but rather the "real deal". And the SMS thing...
Or should we wait for an ICS-ROM?

I use mine with GrooveIP and a bluetooth headset as a phone.
But I don't think the carriers would set it up on a phone plan.

I'm not sure on the GSM version. On the LTE version, it's possible to use it to call. You need to change some variables in framework-res.apk first.
For calling, it's possible. It works, too. Calls will connect. Downside is that you can't get any audio, even over bluetooth or wired headset. I've tried. Not doable to my knowledge.
As far as texting goes, install GoSMS or something like that and you'll be fine. It works.
If you get a sim card with a data plan, then stick it in the tablet, you'll have a semi-working phone.

Some Questions

Has anyone put Slingbox Mobile on one of these? One thing I want to do is have Slingbox Mobile up and have the phone's speaker make the noise, instead of wearing headphones everytime. Is that possible?
How does multitasking work? Does it work? Could I have the internet and a text message up? Or music playing?
I have not had a new phone in three years, and even then that phone is incredibly crappy. It was a buy one for 20 bucks, get up to five free sale. So I don't know what to expect. I just hope that this phone is the right one because I have AT&T.
ALSO: How does the internet work? I don't plan on buying a data plan, if at all possible, so how can I make sure I am surfing on Wifi and not racking up data minutes?
ALSO: Could I buy a bluetooth thing for my car, and have it sync to my touch pro and play the mp3's on it?
1. Yes, if you really like to bugger everyone around
For, 2, 3 4 and 5, all yes, please do some research, and ask your "provider"
How would I be bothering people... sitting on the toilet in my house?
And why would I ask AT&T? AT&T doesn't even admit to having this phone, and I wouldn't trust their answers anyway. You can't tell me if this phone has multitasking? Seriously?

Slingbox mobile should work on all window mobile phones. I don't see why it wouldn't work on TP.
Again, multitasking should work since this is a window mobile phone we're talking about.
And yes you can force edge/3G off so that u won't be racking up data $$. Look around the forum and you'll find a thread pertaining to that.
Lastly, regarding bluetooth, you should check compatibility with the bluetooth device manufacturer. If there were incompatibility, it'd be that device's fault and not TP's.
Hope that helps.
Does such a device exist, where bluetooth can stream my music to my car's speakers?

1,
2, Don't know what your comment about multi-tasking means. Music always can be played at anytime eg read RSS, play games, surf internet, recevie /send sms and navigate roads except while you're talking on the phone.
3, Internet works via wifi just fine eventhough you don't have internet plan! To make sure it won't make a BIG HOLE on your waller, simply call your carrier and require to block internet access, not pay per use. BTW, data connection is completly different from minutes (voice plan)
4, As long as your car has bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP,you can play music/movie/voice directly via car's speaker system. Otherwise, you must have FM transmitter + 3.5mm/Ext USB adaptor or Cassette tape adaptor + 3.5mm/Ext USB adaptor.
Thats pretty awesome about the car thing.
Does AT&T have any kind of cheap data plan? Or would any cheap data plan be completely useless in most cases? I'm pretty sure Wifi is preferable even with 3G access so why bother paying for 3G.
Anyone here HAVE Slingbox Mobile? Could you give me any feedback on it?
You also can play music in the car, or a movie, if your car stereo has inputs, like an aux jack. You can use a splitter and charge the phone at the same time
check ATT's website for more info on data plans. It may change based on your location. But for San Diego, its 30$ a month with a voice plan for data, and that applies for all smartphones and PDAs
the answer is yes to everything

[Q] 3G connection won't come back on until I end call

Hey, I'm having this weird problem with my 3G connection/data connection. If I end up loosing a 3G connection during a call. The only way to get it back is to end the conversation. To further explain... If I hit a spot with no 3G, then go back in a 3G spot, it won't come back on. I still have a good signal and i can talk but there's no E, G or 3G showing. While my phone is in this state I'm unable to browse the web,, it says no data connection which is odd because i obviously have a connection if I'm on the phone...3G starts to come back on As soon as i press end call. It instantaneously goes to E, then G, then 3G. At that point if I make another call, I'll still have a 3G connection and my phone works fine, i.e. i can browse the web and talk as usual. If I hit a spot where I loose 3G again (while in a call) it won't reactivate, I can continue to talk but I can't browse the web. No E, G or 3G showing (just bars with good signal) and it won't go back to normal until I end the call. Any suggestions?, thanks. unlocked bootloader, completely stock, not rooted running 2.3.3
Its an issue but not an isolated issue. I've experienced this as well, on both T-Mobile and att phones. Maybe LTE technology will help with better signal transfer than 3g.

Same thing here.
Just for the heck of it I called t-mobile to get my original sim card activated. It's an oldie from 2004. They said it should be turned on within the next 24 hours. I don't ever remember it happening with any of my other phones while using the older sim. Maybe there's a connection,, it's worth a try, I don't have anything to loose. I'll post my results.
i was under the impression that you can't surf the web and make a call at the same time. since day 1 my phone has always turned data connectivity off as soon as i make a phone call. i thought its supposed to be that way lol. it isnt?
EDIT:
just did some testing. on 3G i can make phone calls and surf the web. on E, i cannot. i leave edge on all the time to save battery (dont need 3g to check emails), so i guess i thought its normal for data to cut out haha.
tmobile and ATT networks are not setup right now to hand a call from GSM back over to 3G during a call. if you are on 3G during a call, and lose 3g and go back to gsm, you will stay on gsm until the call ends. then the phone will switch back to 3g.
this is done on purpose by ATT and tmobile, the thought is that they will enable this hand off direction once 3g is widely covered. but since gsm footprint is larger than 3g, they set it up this way. its annoying, but normal.

Roger P, I'd hit thanks for your answer but I don't see the thanks button to click. For me it's a huge deal to have some closure on the matter. As we all know, it sucks when you loose confidence in your phone. Don't know if it's a web site etiquette thing and that's why I'm not seeing it. Either way, thanks a lot. peace
It depends on the 3G carrier setup by your operator. For example, my operator uses 2 carriers for 3G service, one is data only carrier and the other one is shared between voice and data. So sometimes 3G data connectivity goes away during a call because I was connected to a data only carrier and sometimes I keep using the data connection during the call because I was using a shared carrier. I don't know if this is the case for T mobile.

[Q] Question about Wifi Calling.

I recently just got rid of my Mytouch 4g, which had HORRIBLE reception with wifi calling. I had the phone replaced 3 times from T-mobile before finally giving up. Does anyone use wifi calling with the G2X on a regular basis? I know with my wife's sidekick 4g, the wifi calling is flawless and is just as clear as talking with a full signal. I am looking at picking up a G2X soon, but am really hesitant since I have NO signal at my house, and am not sure the quality of wifi calling with this phone. Thanks for any input.
I also have horrible reception at my house, so I use wifi calling all the time. I haven't had any issues with it on my G2X, and haven't heard any complaints from people on the other end.
You still have to have a connection to Tmo. If your phone says "no service," the wifi app will not connect. I'm assuming though, that if your wife's phone connects, the G2X should as well. I put off getting an Android phone, until they got wifi calling. I cannot live w/o it lol. Losing the wifi calling is one of my "Top 5 fears of an AT&T takeover."
My first G2X had major issues, and the wifi and wifi calling wouldn't work at all (it said it was connected, but it wasn't). So, if you DO have issues, try getting a replacement.
Good Luck.
Thanks much. That's what I needed to hear.
my wifi calling works fine. Can barely tell the difference between the two. The blue icon turns green when you are using it.
Most important thing is that make sure free wifi calling is included in your plan. Otherwise, 1 hour of wifi calling will subtract 60 mins from your plan. If you have unlimited talk you shouldn't worry.
I just picked it up today, and wifi calling is perfect. Thanks for the input folks.

GEAR S2 vs 3g

I'm considering getting a gear S2 monday. How does the 3g version work. I know it has its own sim card, and own number. Does it auto forward text and calls from my phone, or does it operate in wifi/BT mode when the phone is near. If so how does one get text and calls when out and away from phone.
I'm wondering if the 3g is worth the cost, or stick with the BT/wifi version.

The tmobile LTE version works best with a Samsung phone. All calls, texts, notifications are forward automatically to the watch if you lose the bluetooth connection. I had a nexus 6 and it sort of worked but you have to manually call forward everytime. I sold the nexus for a note 5. More seamless operating with the watch.

For me, the S2 3G is worth all the extra money over the S2 Sport. You can do more with the 3G version. GPS, speaker, custom ringtones, bigger battery.
I tried both a S2 Sport & Classic and ended up returning them for the S2 3G.

Sounds good, I've got the S6 edge so it sounds like auto forward is the way to go.

I agree to the 3G version is the way to go.
Got mine today. 3g version. I'm liking it so far, but haven't had a chance to play much.

How is the battery life with 3g off? Is it any better than the regular s2?

After some lack luster battery performance with 3G always on, the last few days I've been just using it with bluetooth. I can still use only the watch for calls and it works fine, I was at about 50% batter last night after using it from 0700 to about 2230 or so. I'm planning on exchanging the watch for a new one due to battery life issues, up till a few days ago I always left it on and it would be at about 20-30% by night time. To answer your question, yes the battery life is a good amount better in my eyes. I was able to use the watch like normal and not worry about battery and still had lots left at the end of a long day, last time I had 3G on it was at 20% by noon.
I have a Verizon GS2 and a note 4 that it's paired with for reference.
Overall I like the speaker and GPS ability and if I want to turn 3g on and use it on a run or out and about I can without issue, it's a nice feature to have.
I just left the AT&T store, I think the watch is too thick for me. I might buy the Wi-Fi only one, I don't know we'll see.
I have a Galaxy S6 Edge, so I can only speak to the experience with a Samsung phone.
Short answer: Everything you were asking about works, and works well with a Samsung phone.
Longer answer:
The watch's connection configuration is very flexible. There are 3 means of connection -- BT, Wifi, 3G -- and the connection settings can be configured to use wifi and 3G as fallback options. This is really the only way to set it up -- it maximizes battery life, and will automate keeping the watch connected. So, if you get out of BT range of the phone, it will attempt to connect to wifi and then remotely to the watch; if that fails, it will turn on 3G and do the same. However, you can force it to use either wifi or 3G all the time if you like.
I've been able to get a day and a half pretty regularly out of the watch. I always get a full (7am - 9pm) day unless I spend a lot of time using it like a smartphone. However, when connected via BT most of the day, I receive and send dozens of SMS messages, make a few calls, use HERE for navigation now and then, etc.
The messaging connection between my phone and watch has been 100% reliable for me, as it switches between different connection methods. It has been very, very nice this week twice when I ran out of the house to go somewhere, forgot my phone, simply invoked the call-forwarding mechanism on the watch (remotely!), and I got a call (the second time... no one called the first time )
The 3G capability is definitely worth it.
Can the s2-3g be unlocked to use on another carrier?

Cancel Data Plan with LTE Gear S3 ?

I have been using my Gear S3, Frontier, LTE version on T-Mobile for close to a year. In looking back over my use, I have discovered that I really don't need the extra expense of the data plan. I always have my paired phone (Galaxy S9+) with me and have only used the watch for phone calls a couple of times. I used the Gear for phone calls a few times when I first got it, and that was to test the service. For real calls, I just use my phone. I DO use Samsung Pay with the watch fairly frequently.
I am considering dropping the cellular plan for the watch. I have turned off mobile data on the watch, and left Bluetooth and WiFi on. Of course, I still get notifications on the watch.
My question is will I lose anything other than phone calls and the remote connection to the watch having cancelled the data plan? Will Samsung Pay still work as long as my phone is within Bluetooth range when I make a purchase?
TIA
The only thing I've lost is the call making ability. Samsung pay still works, even when my phone's in the car. Haven't tested out remote connectivity, but I'm assuming if it's connected to WiFi, you're good
