Hi all.. rooted my s2 rocket and wow what a difference.. removed a bunch of bloatware and ran some quick tests in the house and got 520ms at 1512mhz..
I am fairly new to all of this and was wondering if this is good speed?
I can't wait to get some custom roms..
Rooted or not the processor is clockd at 1.5 ghz that test you want to run is a benchmark. And and you can overclock with a kernel. Look in development.

Folks,
I was originally running the stock kernel + TnT Lite (latest) and using quadrant standard was achieving benchmark scores in the 2400's - now after installing pershoot kernel (latest with no modules) and the latest VegaN I am now seeing a score of just over 1700 - is this something I should be particularly concerned about? Are there, for lack of a better term, optimizations that are missing either from this ROM or kernel that are coming in the future?
Stock kernel and vegan tab 5.1 gets me mid 2400's
CPU governor
I believe this is because pershoot uses the ondemand cpu governor instead of performance. Gives better battery, but benchmarks are lower. In daily use you really shouldn't see a difference as the cpu will ramp up when you need it.
that totally makes sense... thanks...
I have a custom compiled ROM from ejhart in #tegratab and I get 2000 in Quadrant but I run Dungeon Defenders flawlessly, so I could give two s**ts about Quadrant

I too don't necessarily care about break-neck speed results in Quadrant but what I do care about is if lower scores are being caused by bleeding-edge drivers that may cause problems for me down the road vs. power saving techniques being employed by the kernel - hence my original question.
But at the end of the day, if what you need runs smoothly, then its all moot

I am running VEGAn 5.1.1 with the stock kernel also but I am getting scores of 1800-1900 with Quadrant Standard
How can I figure out why I am not seeing a higher level of performance? Thanks.
Jay
Just ran it and got 2559 - Vegan 5.1.1 - Clemsyn Kernel and libsqlite.so and plenty of stuff running.
I'm pretty sure it has always been around 2100+ on any ROM or stock kernel I have tried.
That is strange..
I'm currently running phoenix ultimate w/Tagrak.
It's OC'ed at 1.3 GHz ATM.
It has made a seeming performance change to my phone. But i want to take it further and OC to 1.5 or even 1.6 if possible. After hours of researching, the CPU in the Cappy is capable of running at 1.6 at the fastest.
Does anyone know any APP that will allow you to OC higher than 1.3 GHz? and has OC'ed higher than 1.3?
Thanks a bunch
What kernel are you running? AFAIK the only kernel that supports 1500/1600mhz is Onix, which is the kernel I'm running. Best OC experience I've gotten on the captivate was 1344. I was using Phoenix with the Paragon 1344 kernel.
Once you get Onix, voltage control will let you OC to 1600, but you might not even be able to hit 1400 and stay on for more than 5 mins (my situation)
I'm pretty sure this should be in Q/A, no?
There is already a thread in this section (currently 4 posts down) about this topic.
I've been running a custom oc at 3200mhz stable for 3 days now.

no reason the chip cant do that running @ 3volts with dry ice or liquid nitrogen cooling

the kernel needs to support the different timing modes used. onix will allow up to 1600. to my experience nearly all phones go up to 1200 a vast majority to 1280-1300 im barely stable @1300 myself. but 1344-1400 is the limit with only a few exceptions. every chip is different and i have a feeling the earlier phones had less consistant manufacturing. samsung may also be cherry picking chips that clock better for the galaxy s 2 mini which is supposed to be a hummingbird clocked up to 1400 out of the box.
keep in mind that 30% overclock is significant. if i tried that on my pc it wouldn't run very long.
I can get mine stable at 1.4 using Onix kernel and Serendipity rom. I tried 1.5 and 1.6 but was not able to get it to run.
I've come to the conclusion that OC achieves very little... UV even less.

My computer has just over a 35% overclock on the CPU...
I went from 2.8 GHz to 3.8 GHz.

A ) im guessing not on the cheapo heatsink they sold you with the cpu unless it is one of those "black edition" something or other chips that are marketed towards overclockers
B) i dont see aftermarket heatsinks out there for cell phone processors

Just wondering. Is it at all possible to squeeze in an effective heat sink on the captivate? would be an interesting mod to have.
My Cappuccino can run at 1400 stable, but the extra 400 MHz didn't really make a difference.

hi all, i was just wondering, will OCing my captivate to 1.6 Ghz damage the CPU?
thanks!

Couple of things for you:
First, I doubt your device will run stable at 1.6 GHz. Most Galaxy S-type devices won't run stable above 1.4 GHz, and while some do, only a very lucky few can run at 1.6 GHz.
Second, yes, you can damage your CPU doing that. Higher clock speed = more heat generated & more time at higher voltages. That means more chance of doing physical hardware damage to your device.
That being said... you are *probably* not likely to do harm to your device if you overclock to 1.6 (and it manages to be stable) and you aren't running benchmarks 24/7.
I think the real question for you, is why would you want to run your device that fast? If you want high benchmark scores to impress your friends, just cheat Quadrant, way easier, and less chance of causing problems. If your device is so unresponsive at it's current speed, then find a different ROM/software setup.
1.6 GHz should never really be necessary.
oh okay, it hasnt actually arrived yet, i was thinking it would help running games meant for dual core procs.
thanks for the reply!

Take a look at Chainfire3d with the Nvidia module.
Long story short, all of the current "dual core" phones are running Tegra2. But Tegra2 GPU <= Hummingbird GPU.
Problem is, games optimized for the Tegra will have a harder time running on our PowerVR. Not because of graphics horsepower, but because of specific optimization done by the programmers.
Chainfire's driver deal should help with that, in fact there is a thread floating around here somewhere with all the files you need.
PS Don't worry about those dual cores phones beating up on your little Captivate. Once you get it rooted, loaded up with a custom ROM and kernel, and running Gingerbread, I think you'll find none of the competition comes close...
I tried 1.6 ghz once and it was like insta-freeze. I'm very stable at 1.4 though.

Just wondered if quadrant says 1 core in system information for everyone and why?? Surely if we are only using one core we are not getting full use of our sensations
The Elixir system info app also says just 1 core in use.
Yep, mine says core 1 as well.
gingerbread is not a android version with true native accelerated dual core support... this has been mentioned plenty of times... especially the fact that ice cream sandwich will be better dual core support... im new here and know this
Hey I have an idea its because when quadrant was released. There was no such thing as dual core.
Quadrant isn't designed to test dual core phones. cf bench is
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
But then, why does it even display this information ? If Quadrant couldn't see how many cores a phone has, what's the point in putting a "core" section ?
Quadrant is only optimized to recognize a single core so that's all it's going to look for and read. I think there are threads around here talking about the more in-depth reason why quadrant only sees one core but if you want a more accurate benchmark score use CF-bench.
Quadrant only detects 1 core. It is a flawed and easily skewed benchmark app. Don't use it. CF-Bench is a lot lot better.
Its not Quadrant its Android 2.3.3
If you install a 2.3.4 ROM (like InsertCoin 2.3.4) Quadrant will report 2 cores. You don't need to wait until Ice Cream Sandwich. Google fixed a lot of issues in Honeycomb surrounding SMP that were backported to 2.3.4.
You can read more about this here or Google info about 2.3.4. Or you can just download InsertCoin 2.3.4 and see for yourself.
My stock ROM phone also has Quadrant reporting 2 cores...

I don't know what to tell you then...
Quadrant told me I had 1 core on stock & etc. but upgrading to a 2.3.4 ROM made it say 2....
btw, Quadrant score dropped precipitously after upgrading to 2.3.4 and it started recognizing 2 cores, I'm guessing they're not really taking the second CPU into account in their scores. Phone's a hell of a lot faster regardless of the benchmark. Definitely something's not right there.
The dual core devices are way ahead of most measures... be happy, you have a ferrari in a field of vw bugs...
Anyone no how to overclock with setcpu or another app so i can make my performance clock wise to around 1200mhz like the htc evo 3d they have same processor and it runs 200mhz faster. Cant have the GF running faster than me
with her new phone and all her apps working where mine don't on mine and her phone with gb 2.3 working so smooth compared to my LG.
You need a kernel that allows overclock. Aaand no, there's no kernel at the moment that allows it.
