Couple of things for you:
First, I doubt your device will run stable at 1.6 GHz. Most Galaxy S-type devices won't run stable above 1.4 GHz, and while some do, only a very lucky few can run at 1.6 GHz.
Second, yes, you can damage your CPU doing that. Higher clock speed = more heat generated & more time at higher voltages. That means more chance of doing physical hardware damage to your device.
That being said... you are *probably* not likely to do harm to your device if you overclock to 1.6 (and it manages to be stable) and you aren't running benchmarks 24/7.
I think the real question for you, is why would you want to run your device that fast? If you want high benchmark scores to impress your friends, just cheat Quadrant, way easier, and less chance of causing problems. If your device is so unresponsive at it's current speed, then find a different ROM/software setup.
1.6 GHz should never really be necessary.

Take a look at Chainfire3d with the Nvidia module.
Long story short, all of the current "dual core" phones are running Tegra2. But Tegra2 GPU <= Hummingbird GPU.
Problem is, games optimized for the Tegra will have a harder time running on our PowerVR. Not because of graphics horsepower, but because of specific optimization done by the programmers.
Chainfire's driver deal should help with that, in fact there is a thread floating around here somewhere with all the files you need.
PS Don't worry about those dual cores phones beating up on your little Captivate. Once you get it rooted, loaded up with a custom ROM and kernel, and running Gingerbread, I think you'll find none of the competition comes close...
I tried 1.6 ghz once and it was like insta-freeze. I'm very stable at 1.4 though.

Something ive learned with g1 dev, never say "nope", way to many times stuff which had been said impossible has been done.
But
1) OP do you know what you can over clock your g1 (not to 1 ghz though)
2) whats the full clock speed of the cpu 4 the moment?

A processor clocked at 384mhz (g1) being overclocked to over a gig? What you gonna use to keep it cool? Liquid nitrogen?
true that... even at 576 mhz it gets way too hot while using wifi... besides, the phone just locks up when you go over 650 mhz or so. i have tried. i dont think it can handle it.

The thing is the moment runs at 800 Mhz stock so 1006-800= 200 Mhz overclock, or a 25% overclock. Our G1's were built for 385, but I've gotten mine stable up to 729, so an 89% overclock. Granted, the CPU inside the G1 was designed for 528 but HTC underclocked it for battery purposes, so it's only a 38% overclock. The samsung moment has a really crappy samsung chip (pre-hummingbird), but it should be able to squeeze out a few more mhz. I don't have much hope for anything more than 729 on our phones, at least not without an overvolt kernel and some sort of liquid cooling system.

Hehe It might be placebo but Raging Thunder 2 is MUCH more playable at 700 Mhz than at 528.
It is true that there is more to speed than clock rate, I'm not going to argue about that. A Core 2 due at 3.3 Ghz doesn't compare to a Core i3 at 2.2 Ghz, since the core i3 has more cores and is a more efficient platform. But a Core i3 at 1.6 Ghz in a netbook won't compare to a Core i3 at 2.4 Ghz in a desktop. Clock speed can make a big difference in performance. You can optimize all you want but using brute force helps out. Of course I only overclock when I want to play some 3D racing games and I'm close to a power source. I usually run it at 352 or 480.

Why would you want to OC that much, I'm sure your battery last all of about 4 hours tops
I'm currently running phoenix ultimate w/Tagrak.
It's OC'ed at 1.3 GHz ATM.
It has made a seeming performance change to my phone. But i want to take it further and OC to 1.5 or even 1.6 if possible. After hours of researching, the CPU in the Cappy is capable of running at 1.6 at the fastest.
Does anyone know any APP that will allow you to OC higher than 1.3 GHz? and has OC'ed higher than 1.3?

What kernel are you running? AFAIK the only kernel that supports 1500/1600mhz is Onix, which is the kernel I'm running. Best OC experience I've gotten on the captivate was 1344. I was using Phoenix with the Paragon 1344 kernel.
Once you get Onix, voltage control will let you OC to 1600, but you might not even be able to hit 1400 and stay on for more than 5 mins (my situation)
I'm pretty sure this should be in Q/A, no?

the kernel needs to support the different timing modes used. onix will allow up to 1600. to my experience nearly all phones go up to 1200 a vast majority to 1280-1300 im barely stable @1300 myself. but 1344-1400 is the limit with only a few exceptions. every chip is different and i have a feeling the earlier phones had less consistant manufacturing. samsung may also be cherry picking chips that clock better for the galaxy s 2 mini which is supposed to be a hummingbird clocked up to 1400 out of the box.
keep in mind that 30% overclock is significant. if i tried that on my pc it wouldn't run very long.
I can get mine stable at 1.4 using Onix kernel and Serendipity rom. I tried 1.5 and 1.6 but was not able to get it to run.
I've come to the conclusion that OC achieves very little... UV even less.

A ) im guessing not on the cheapo heatsink they sold you with the cpu unless it is one of those "black edition" something or other chips that are marketed towards overclockers
B) i dont see aftermarket heatsinks out there for cell phone processors

Just wondering. Is it at all possible to squeeze in an effective heat sink on the captivate? would be an interesting mod to have.
My Cappuccino can run at 1400 stable, but the extra 400 MHz didn't really make a difference.

Excuse me, I should say you can get it to 1.8, but 1.6 is the the highest that's really stable. I seem to have read that may people have gotten 1.8 with few issues however.

There was a kernel that reported 1.8 incorrectly.
I have looked at those 1.7 GHz kernels and there is some interesting development going on with voltages to make it more stable but it is a weird bastard conglomeration of clocks and those kernels have there own issues. The limiting factor it's not the quality of the CPU but that the multipliers are locked at no more than 8 times the buss speed. Overclocking beyond 1.6 means buss overclocking which causes all kings of issues that must be worked through often by under clocking other things. most infuses are perfectly stable at 1.6 with no special treatment like exists in those 1.7 kernels but heat can run away and cause crashes when using the cell and GPS radios. It would be cool to run some benchmarks on Miui with 1.7 GHz to see if you can break 5000 in quadrant but really it is only 6% more than what we have in a perfect stable form. Not to mention that the CPU is throttled and would rarely see that speed and tweaking the governor would probably do more for the user since going to 1.7 means compromises in other clocks and potential problems.

And for the record the best experience I had with my captivate was on froyo with glitterballs' stream kernel which had some cool stuff going on with hardware acceleration running jfs lagfix at 800 mhz. If I could get some of that in a GB kernel that I could run at 600 or 800 mhz with the insane undervolt my CPU can tolerate I'd be in heaven. Battery life for days!
Is it possible to overclock the CPU to more than 1.5ghz? Most ROMs only go to 1.5.
I'm asking because the sensation xl has the same CPU but people are overclocking that to over 1.5 safely.
Virtuous Quattro ICS rom (and its kernel) goes to 1.9 safely

Yes. Endymion/Hyperion kernels allow up to 1.5Ghz.
Unity9 allows up to 2ghz. Its mot recommended however, as the kernel is old, and 2ghz isnt safe

It's not recommended. It's old and has bugs with the front camera.
In the first place, you shouldn't OC higher than 1.5ghz. The chip isn't designed to run a frequencies higher than 1.5ghz for ling periods of time. In the long run, you will damage to motherboard, fry the chip etc. Battery life will also be significantly shorter too.
If your intentions were to do that, i don't think you should have got this phone in the first place, and you should have just stuck with the Sensation.

the sensation xl is shipped at 1.5GHz. There's no need to exceed 1.2GHz in my opinion, at least not yet.

The Sensation has a dual core 8260 Snapdragon CPU, our has 8255 (single core) so i think that 1.5 Ghz for the DS is more than enough and safe, also reading somewhere that the 8255 is designed to run at 1.4 Ghz as an optimal freq and that the mobile manufacturers are free to undercloock/overclock for specific needs
I personally use the 8255 at 1.1 Ghz...never had lags

I limited all my kernels, Hyperion, Endymion and Reaper kernels to around 1.5GHz, as it is way more than enough. I did this for some reasons:
- As it has been discussed all over these forums, devices handle OC/UV differently, no matter if the cpu is the same. This has to do with sheer luck with what part you get from the factory, your phone is only guaranteed to work at up to 1GHz. It may seem stable at 1.5 but reboot once a week, some phones may not boot at 1.2, and some phones can chug along happily at 2GHz.
- Every newbie that lands on these forums will instantly set the frequency as high as they can. Then they will get a freeze now and then. Then they pull the battery. Then they kill the phone. THEN they check the forums and read that they should not have pulled the battery.
- With my current roms, where the kernels are tested, there is no need for overclocking. Things run very very smooth at stock values. But I believe in "power to the user", that's why I even give the option to OC. The last time I had to overclock my phone due to lag/choppiness was with Virtuous 2.39 or whatever, months ago.
So ask yourself why you want to go higher. Bragging rights? Quadrant scores to show your mates? Do you even notice a difference between, let's say, 1.2GHz and 1.5GHz? Is it really worth it?

Yeah, that's the regular Sensation.
We are taking about the XL which has a single core 1.5ghz CPU.
+1 agree with lowveld. I Never OC'ed for normal usage. I don't feel the need. You can't tell the difference in performance IMO

I'm sorry if I missed the point, but is there anything overclocking that much is necessary for? I mean, I'm at 1,3 GHz max now but my phone runs at 1 GHz 60% of the time, rest of the time lower. I never reached something above 1 GHz.. ?
So why overclocking even more?

does anyone know if setting the CPU SPEED to 1.5 GHz is dangerous while the SENSATION XL has the same chipset as the desire s has (Qualcomm Snapdragon MS8255) and the SENSATION XL's CPU speed is set to 1.5GHz .
sensation has msm8260 (dual core 1.2-1.5 GHz and adreno 220)
Sensation XL indeed has MSM8255.
Just like in PCs, chipsets in phones are binned not only by their type, but also by their target frequency. You don't go overclocking Core2Duo 1.8 GHz to 2.4 GHz because it's "the same CPU", right? Because it isn't the same CPU. The same applies here.

Answer - would you run the CPU on your computer at 1.5x the speed it was made to run, because there's CPU with the same name (i3/i5/i7/whatever) that runs at 1.5x the speed?
The same answer applies to your phone.
I expect people to be able to make minimal logic work with their own brains rather than just answering "yes/no". I think that this way people actually understand more than what they've asked for.

No it won't. It depends on the specific part, and few parts run stock 1.5 GHz without stability issues surfacing / burning out very fast (if overvolted).
If you really want - you can try it on T-Mobile G2, that has MSM8255 of the earliest bin, with stock at 800MHz. Good luck, don't forget to write how did you like a phone as a toaster.
I suggest refraining from bad advice, especially when it's in the forum and it's not your phone you're talking about. You can burn your phones as much as you like, but don't go around suggesting it to others. Just let me understand something: you have stock non-rooted ICS and have no idea about such basics as which guide to use to downgrade, but you allow yourself posting about chipset frequencies?

I overclock my ds to1.5 every time I play games and it doesn't even get warm. So I think it's pretty harmless.
