Nexus S 4g screen washed out... - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is my third refurbished Nexus S 4g in two weeks!!!
Does anybody screen looked washed out? When I see my screen my greys look faded, my greens are dull, etc... Is there anyway I can fix this without going to the sprint store? I'm really tire of going there.

Well, it would help to know if you're stock or rooted. If you're stock you could try rooting and installing a custom kernel and adjusting the colors with voodoo control app until they look good. There's a thread in themes & apps with some good starting points for settings. Or you can go back to sprint. If you are rooted then see my first suggestion above. My screen looks pretty beautiful.

Why should I do CyanogenMod on a Nexus S?

Go gentle on this newbie-droid -
What are the reasons for giving up the warranty on my Nexus S and install CyanogenMod?
Thanks!
Short answer - it's awesome and it has a lot more options and features than stock.
Long answer -
1st, I wouldn't be too concerned about voiding warranty. Depending on how you root, "unrooting" will be easy as pie. If you have a problem with the phone, flash back to stock, lock the bootloader, and no one will know the wiser.
2nd - A lot of people are kinda under the impression that CM on the SNS may not be necessary because their though is that since the SNS is "vanilla" already, there's no point.
On devices that aren't vanilla already the jump to CM is much more dramatic, for sure. On the SNS the differences are more like subtle enhancements that really make the device more customizable.
You can change the lockscreen; you can add widgets to the notification bar to control things like wifi, BT, etc; you have many more options in Browser (remove those zoom controls) and Messaging (dark theme FTW); you have album art and music controls on the lock screen; you can choose a "render effect" to make the display use less battery; you can set up gestures for lockscreen shortcuts and messaging; the list goes on and on.
Once you get used the the features of CM it will be horribly painful to have to go back to stock for any reason. You may not notice them at first, but dig deep and play around with them and you'll see what all the fuss is about. Definately worth it.
CM7 runs faster and smoother and allot snappier than stock.
Pretty much what fchipm said
BTW you wont void your warranty rooting and installing 3rd party ROMS...you can unroot and re-lock the bootloader.
Faster and smoother .. Thats should be great ! Its my first android phone and already find it smokin' slick ;-)

You should give it a try. I've never had any issues with core apps throughout all of CM7s nightlies. RC1 extremely stable, IMO enough to be a stable release. There's nothing to lose because you could always return to stock and not void warranty. CM7 is superior to stock in all aspects. Speed, sound, display, battery, themes, Widgets and many other features. For example, one of the reasons I find myself going back to CM7 is for the notification bar toggles. The kernels available should you decide to root are also amazing. Voodoo sound provides superior audio clarity, and voodoo color fixes any maroon grey tint you might experience. Couple this with CM7, and it'll leave you smiling.

actually yes
Google's own blog specifically says they made the Nexus S easy to root and install custom roms on; I sincerely doubt that installing a custom rom would void your warranty in 99% of situations, despite that warning on the fastboot oem unlock command. (Example, if you get a dead pixel, that's nothing to do with a custom rom and your warranty should still be effective.)
Of interest is that the oem unlock is NOT necessary to root the phone, or flash custom roms, and that the oem unlock is the only place you get a "you'll void your warranty" screen. I would argue that if you skip the oem unlock you've not voided your warranty because you didn't see the warning, and you never acknowledged it.

Nightlies are built each night by a program called the build not and sometimes incorporate small changes others times not. A RC or release candidate is a when all of the little changes get polished up and put together by a human and put out as a sort of beta.

Mods/fixes from GS1 that work on Infuse...

for me anyway....
I couldn't sleep so I spent some time reading the galaxy s forums for fixes we could do to our Infuse's froyo that didn't involve flashing a different kernel, if you know if any more please post up.
FuguTweaks - I had been setting my own memory settings in "galaxy tuner" to leave about 100mb free of "EA" memory, this helped speed up the phone quite a bit and takes care of the "lag" we get when only about 60mb is free. I then found this FugyTweak and it seems even better. It only leaves me about 80mb free but much better than stock.
Browser Lag - I used the non mobile version of engadget to benchmark before and after, it does seem to stutter less.
CM6 mms.apk - I have never been a fan of the TW mms app, cm6 set to black theme works great!
I mentioned galaxy tuner earlier, you can get it in the market and the LCD color adjustments do work if you want to tune your screen, I haven't made it that far yet. I also haven't tried the 3d sound thing.
Please try everything at your own risk, I have no idea if any of this will eventually turn my/your phone into a flesh hunting screamer.
I would not recommend that browser lag fix for the Infuse. That was for a very specific problem that early Captivate Froyo builds had. Don't think the Infuse suffers from the problem that needed fixing there. I think I'm a good person to trust on that specific topic as well.
This post has to be the best one so far to ME! I did not know about the app galaxy tuner. I was able to make the screen look WHITE when I dim it all the way down. Before it was like egg white sort of color. Also the 3d sound and EQ worked perfectly!
Thanks OP!
Has anyone else been succefful in using the mms.apk? I've fixed permissions and everything but it will still only take me to the defualt screen where you see all your messages. When I click on a thread it goes black and does nothing.

You think?
There was an app I had on my Nook Color that was similar to Galaxy Tuner.. It was made for the Nexus One and it let you adjust the color of the LCD a bit. Does anyone know the name? I'm dying to use it on my Infuse!

Custom looks of the phones?

I'm very curious on how to make my phone look completely like its not an android phone. I see all these screen shots and they look nothing like the roms I see.

when i am not working on my personal builds i run the following setup:
(i am so going to get some major flack for this, but i dont care, its functional and i like it. )
MIUI + Launcher7 + MIUI WP7 Lockscreen
i like the simplicity of WP7, ease of use, but i heart android in every other way.....
My favorite lockscreen is the CM7 Lockscreen Gestures with "Disable unlock slider" selected. All it displays is the simple time and battery stats, the rest of the space is blank for gestures, I have one that mutes the phone, one that turns on the flashlight, and on that unlocks it. It's fast and easy to unlock and no one could ever figure out how to do it.
Yeah android is the way to go all the way. Preferably HTC. Thanks ya.
IPhone to the inspire. Rock solid.

[Q] Flash on screen when locking

I have Nexus S i9020 and I have this bad problem..
It's started when I flashed AOSP ICS Brainmaster's Mix.. When I locked the phone, I had a strange yellow-green flash on the screen.. I tried flashing different kernels - no effect.. When I tried playing with Voodoo colors - no effect.. The only "semi-cure" was: if you return to "Stock gingerbread colors" that damn screenflash was seen only on the contour of clock and "that slide thing to unlock the screen" (don't know how to name it in english=))..
I thought that it was just the bug of the ROM then.. But when I flashed CM9 latest alpha everything remained the same.. I also thought that it was just a bug of the ROM..
But now I flashed ICS OTA after the downgrade to stock 2.3.6.. And the result is the same to switching to gingerbread colors in Voodoo app on AOSP old ICS ROMs.. I still have the screenflash on the contour on the lock and that "slidething"..
It's really annoying now as I'm starting to think that it is a hardware issue.. But all other functions work just perfect, not any single issue with the screen.. I haven't dropped my phone, haven't kicked it or something (bought it in June)
Can anybody help with this please?
P.S.: there were some similar threads here, but I haven't found the cure..
I tried playing with "Transition animation scale" and "Window animation scale" in Developer Options.. Setting window animation scale to 0.5x solves the problem.. But it turns off CRTscreen fadeout.. So there is something wrong with it on my phone.. I don't want to loose it, it's beautiful..
Any advice please?
I understand that I can only annoy with this question.. But still I don't know what to do! Please suggest any possible ideas, every piece of wisdom could help!
Now I've rooted official ICS, installed Nexus Beam 4.1.0 and flashed Glados 2.1 kernel.. And the green & yellow screenflash once again all over the screen when I lock the phone..
In every other possible way the screen behaves itself perfectly.. But when it turns off I see that damn flash..
Mine does it too
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Mine does it only when i wake the phone and put it back to sleep without unlocking it
Mine has the exact same problem. It doesn't happen in gingerbread but on ics roms, even stock, it does a flash. On stock its lighter and harder to see, but if I change voodoo settings it turns green. I doubt its hardware considering it works fine on gingerbread.

So we have not only one complaint.. Something must be done to cure it.. It's really annoying as it is the only thing that works not fine on this phone!
Can somebody of the developers please comment on this problem?
Has someone found an answer to this?

I've seen this discussed somewhere already, but can't recall where!? But to my knowledge, if I can remember correctly it can be corrected by resetting voodoo control settings back to 2.3.3 defaults! Something to do with gamma settings I think! But obviously you have to be rooted to have & use voodoo control!!
I've tried a couple of those settings, but it never totaly get rid of the problem, it's just less visible. But since I know it's there, i'll always be seeing it XD

[SOLVED] Better ICS Boot Logo?

Hey guys !
Okay so has anyone noticed that the ICS boot logo running on most ICS ROMs looks VERY washed out on out Nexus S's? Well I have. To make it truly nice the colours need to be deeper and more rich than they are right now... Does anybody agree with me? I feel like it's too bright at some points an overall a little faded.
So I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get an ICS boot logo with 'better' colour. If not, can somebody please make one ?
here is boot from galaxy nexus. i didnt make it i found it around the forums

Completely agree with you. I really don't like the look of the new boot animation so I usually run a custom one. Doesn't affect any performance aspects but it just looks cool
=\ I went to Verizon and turn off the Galaxy Nexus and turned on.... =\ the boot Animation Looks the Same as the ones on the ICS Nexus S... I was disappointed =\

Lol thanks but I used ROM Manager and put it on already . Actually my battery life is freaking amazing and I always use my phone. I send about 500-600 texts per day, 30-60 min of gaming, 1-3 hours (usually 2) of internet, and 1-2 hours of music will get me by my day. (About 16-19 hours)
Nexus S - CyberGR Hybrid ICS (5), Matrix Kernel (15)
Here i edited the images darkened and made colors little more vibrant
imo looks much better
default nexus s and galaxy nexus bootanimation are way too bright and show too much color banding look horrid
edit
added flashable zip
Going to try it out... one second
Put it in there and nothing happened. Maybe the ROM Toolbox boot animation I installed is interfering? Or I don't know what I'm doing lol

No dude I'm using a different boot animation so if it changed from this one to the ICS one I would've noticed. If it didn't work for me it wouldn't work for you either then . He said the colors were better so would have noticed . I guess its just not working. Maybe make a flash able ZIP?

I'm going to try both!
Both are identical. And they get the job done . THANK YOU BOTH IT'S AMAZING! I will +1 you both when I'm off mobile! This needs to be put into the custom ROMs over the boot animation they use now... I recommend either one to anyone. This thread needs a bump

there are a great number of boot animations, and very easy to flash new boot animations
Yeah but we wanted a better ICS boot animation. Which isn't on ROM Toolbox
