Need some opinions. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

My Upgrade is coming up soon. I don't care much for data transfer, but I want a phone that's responsive. I play games, watch movies, listen to music, use the gps and enjoy smoothness when scrolling through the menu's. Which phone is good for me the Galaxy S II or the skyrocket? Please let me know your thoughts.

If lte data transfer is not a concern. The definatrly the sgs2 much better cpu and gpu. Better responsiveness. No question what so ever its not an oppinion its a fact. I have owned both im keeping the skyrocket because i like the bigger screen and lte but my sgs2 was significantly faster

Well, benchmarks in a variety of sites show that these two phones are very close in performance, so close indeed that the users are unlikely to notice much of a difference. There are two reasons to move to a Skyrocket: the larger screen and the NFC support (although not much is using it at this time).

Benchmarks Mean nothing .....its a number
I have the vivid,SGS II, and the skyrocket. GsII is best ,then the vivid then skyrocket.

Oh and the og gsII has NFC too
And if you watch movies on the sky rocket there are lines in the screen

Watching netflix and slingbox there are none of these lines people speak of. Couldn't be happier with skyrocket screen. It's just like people getting caught up in benchmark scores. They are convinced the screen just isn't good.
It's sad. And misleading to people who come here for advice.

Not talking about bench marks. Did not even run them on my skyrocket. the sgs2 is significantly faster hands on with apps and opening multiple t.abs when web browsing. Its all around faster ive owned and used both devices extensively. And if you dont care about lte the sgs2 is hands down a better device. I like my skyrocket i like the lte and biger screen and i will be keeping it even though it is not as snappy and has some lag

I have all three, if you wanna throw out I'm misleading go buy all three test all three for a day or two each then tell me the skyrocket is better.....
I stated my observation and its based off of fact not fan boy baloney

Gs2 for you no question.
Skyrocket: slower/laggy, screen issues/lines...all the things you here in this thread and others on this topic.
I hag the gs2 before switct to the skyrocket. Although I like the bigger screen and lte I miss the gs2

What am I missing - Galaxy SII

I don't get what I am so suppose to be in love with when it comes to the SII vs Infuse 4g.
Now I am strictly comparing the US Specced SII (european I suppose as well since it is the same) vs Infuse 4g.
The infuse has a bigger screen and bigger battery.
The S2 has dual core and a small battery and smaller screen.
So I am going to get dual core eating monster with a smaller battery? Battery life on the Infuse is OK, good, but nothing crazy. The S2 must be awful?
Now if we were getting the 1.5ghz dual core with some form of LTE I could see a little more attraction.
personally though I'll be olding off for something better.
Dual core
1 gig of ram
It's only slightly smaller - actually feels better in your hand.
Gingerbread 2.3.4 from the carrier
Better GPS lock
I'm still wondering if it has the chip needed for voodoo sound though...
It's not a huge difference but you get gingerbread out the box, touchwiz 4.0, dual core, 1080p recording, hdmi(infuse as well), thx soluscado totally slipped my mind, etc. The infuse is ok but i'm probably getting rid of mine. The checkered loading is driving me crazy.
I agree with the OP. The dual core proc seems like a "meh" addition, especially considering the battery trade-off. I just don't use TouchWiz anyway, so that's irrelevant. The bigger screen is a BIG deal to me, and any video I take with my phone is displayed on my phone, so 1080p recording is irrelevant. I'm pretty sure you get HDMI out on the Infuse as well, but I have no use for that either. And the Gingerbread enhancements are so minor (to me) that I really couldn't care less whether it's available OOB or not.

What you said.
Yea no point. I'll stick with my infuse until samsung releases an lte phone on att like ours or the s2. Or wait for googles next phone and hope that is lte as well.
Dual core is not enough reason to upgrade, I want real 4g speeds.
Infuse running Serendipity VII
If the GPS chip is better than that of the infuse then I'm switching. I use the GPS more than anything else on the phone and that is a deal breaker for me. If the infuse had a perfect working GPS, I'd take it over the s2 anyday.

The battery life on the sgs2 i don't thinks all that bad. The battery.2 inch screen difference i hardly notice, gb is awesome. Mines yet to show any sign of lag at all. I haven't even touched the infuse since i got the sgs2. Once gb comes out ill use it. Until then though ill stick with gb and my dual core .

I know this topic has come up a few times in the month or so I've owned my infuse and watched these forums, and I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering if it's worth the switch to the AT&T-branded SGSII. Honestly the thing I'd have wanted most from the European SGSII was the physical Home button, but that didn't make it over here (needs more patent litigation).
I do agree that the .2" off the screen is actually a bonus; 4.3" screens feel a lot nicer when using to chat--somehow the AT&T SGSII is more than .2" off in both dimensions (4.96" x 2.60" vs. 5.2" x 2.8" according to Samsung). Still, a fifth of an inch either way isn't a deal-breaker for me either way.
The dual core SGSII processor is obviously the big difference, and I have yet to see anyone post a compelling, non-anecdotal reason to have a second core on a phone. I don't know many people who have felt their Infuse was insufficiently responsive, and no game I've run has had any noticeable lag on the Infuse, though my experience is hardly extensive.
Does anyone know how much RAM the AT&T SGSII has? If it had the full gig that the Euro version has, that'd also be a nice bonus, as I have managed to fill up the sub-half-gig that the Infuse has available.
The last feature I think deserves mention is NFC, which the ATT SGSII does have, reportedly. Not that I really expect to be paying by NFC any time soon, but what are we if not nerds who want more features on our phones?

There isn't a single thing that the Infuse beats the SGS II in. It ties in a few places like camera, but that's it. The SGS II is the best Android phone in existence, and the Infuse probably wouldn't have even been the best of 2010.

I don't think i can agree with that. I havent yet used one, but i cam say that having the largest and brightest display on the market is a huge plus for me. Regardless of whether it may seem like a better deal, i feel that the sgs2 is basically a smaller infuse. It looks the same and does all the same things. Really can't count gb as a plus either since we already have it on the infuse and an official version by the time the sgs2 is readily available to most. I can't see any advantage to 1080p either since it will just eat up more of that inferior battery. Just my 2 cents.
Edit: on top of all that, i don't know why u said 2010? you meant 2011? even if that was so i find that hard tp believe also. Considering that feature for feature, the Infuse was the best overall android device you could buy here in the U.S. when it was released. That said, the only real reason the Infuse hasn't out sold the competition is the lack of hype behind it and a very quiet release by Samsung. Quite unlike the sgs2 which is released first in their most local market. It obviously is pointed towards the more general technophile audience. The infuse i feel was directed towards the huge media phone freaks.

I said 2010 on purpose. That's where single core Froyo phones belong.

Galaxy S 2 in hand and its not better or faster!

Hi, yesterday I bought the Galaxy s 2 i9100 for $600 thinking its going to be a 10 times better and now after using one day I. Don't think it's any better.
1. It feels soon much smaller its like Nexus S size, and all things feel cramped.
2. I'm using it side by side with all the apps I have they open the same time Infuse looks much nicer, overall same speed.
3. Sound on infuse much much better, the speaker and the earpice.
4. The browser same smoothness nothing more.
That's all I can say. If anyone wants me to compare anything or has any question I'm here to answer.
I think whoever is thinking to buy should not. I was the same wanting to find 10 times better but I can't.
INFUSE 4G IS MUCH MUCH BETTER.

For upgrade price? I'm not saying it's bad. Its just not better then infuse. Having a bigger screen is better or the speaker sound. There are lots of things in real use better on Infuse 4g

i sold my galaxy s2 long ago when it first comes out in uk! the s2 with 4.27" screen looks like it' 4 inches! do you really need dual core to check emails, surf internet, check emails, or use the gps?
but i will get Canada Rogers galaxy s2 LTE, it has the same huge 4.5 screen as infuse but with dual core 1.5g!
WTF is thinking getting s2 with small 4.27" screen!
Ye we will be getting a bigger infuse. I'll be getting it later on. I guess this Infuse is just temporary for now haha
GS2 (Epic Touch ) on Sprint has a 4.5 in screen, so the att version will have a smaller screen?

To be fair, the WWE SGS2 has a 4.3" display. The SGS2 that Samsung developed has the 4.3". T-Mobile and Sprint requested a larger screen. AT&T chose to accept the original size. Probably so there wouldn't be a conflict with the Infuse.
Whatever you need to tell yourself.
Isn't the SGS II marginally thicker than the Infuse? By like .3mm or something?

I'm curious if the SGS2 works like the atrix in that the second core only runs on media stuff. The atrix second core really only runs when the dock is connected or gaming. Can you tell if SGS2 is like that. If so I would stick with infuse. Gig of RAM sounds good, but for what I do the Infuse Ram is sufficient. Unlike my Captivate which didn't have the 512 it boasted (still a mystery).

Really? Would you like for the infuse to drain the battery twice as fast all the time when it only needs the extra 100% drain for games and a few apps?

Skyrocket vs. Galaxy S2 (i777): which one do you prefer?

Trying to decide between the Skyrocket (SR) and the i777. Please do not base your assessment on price, the availability of LTE (not ready in my neck'o'the woods), or on the larger SR screen. Main points of interest: CPU speed, graphics speed, though feel free to take other factors into consideration.
Many thanks for answering the poll.
CPU and GPU speed on the I777 are better by a good margin.
In all honest the only time I ever felt a difference, is in the stock launcher. TWlauncher runs super smooth on the i777. Other than that I see no difference.

I have till tomorrow to decide to exchange my SGII for the Skyrocket. Trying to decide. I did see the HTC Vivid screen and it is very nice and clear with the higher resolution. Going to unroot just in case tomorrow I do exchange.
Sent from my GT-P7510 using XDA Premium App
It depends which forum you ask. The skyrocket forum will say i727 > i777, the i777 forum will say the opposite. The vivid forum will say it's better than both.
That's the honest answer. I think the [lack of] Dev movement from the i777 to the skyrocket speaks for itself. All the devs there have emphatically stated the CPU, GPU, and potential of the i777 is better.
Do you want to say "I have the first phone on att running ICS" or do you want to say "with my increased LTE speed I was throttled in no time"?
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
If data wasn't in question, I liked the i777 a hair better in terms of speed (opening apps, responsiveness, screen transitions).
But, data is such a major part of a smartphone. Even in non-LTE areas, the SR gets significantly faster data speeds.
There are a couple things other than data I like more than the i777. The screen wake-up lag isn't as pronounced. Second, home button responds faster (prob b/c Vlingo isn't preinstalled)
As crazy as it sounds I have all three at my house , the I777 runs smoother. The sky rocket has screen problems, really bad at that....the vivid's resolution and quality is amazing......the best for processor and speed =I777.....but overall everything put together I like the vivid best its UI is awesome
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
In the last 10 days I have had all three.
Speed and GPU goes to I777
Resolution Vivid
HSPA+ data on both Sky Rocket and Vivid far exceed I777.
The Vivid head phone jacket, sluggish response because of sense and battery cover coming is why I went back to Samsung.
As for the two SGS2 feel, the I727 feels much better. Also vibration and sound is much better.
Development, I777 has a lot of Roms including CM.
In the end speed and GPU is not a must for me. Data speed was more important so I727 it is. My area doesn't have LTE but when it does I am ready.

I'm in the same boat, trying to decide which to get. I only bought my Captivate a year ago but for some reason I'm being offered the discounted rate already. Maybe power users (frequent flashers) get priority with AT&T?
At any rate, thank you to all above for the useful responses. I thanked each of you. I was trying to get info in the SGS2 forum but it seems like too many people there are just annoyed that they're outside their 30-day window and can't exchange it for a Skyrocket. There's a lot of hate going on in that forum!
I still haven't decided, but I plan to go buy one in about 3 hours...
I had both, I didn’t like the i777 because my screen had what seemed to have a slight greenish tint, not sure if it was defective or not. I enjoy the bigger screen on the Skyrocket and the screen is actually pretty sharp. Also, I honestly can’t tell the speed difference at all from the Skyrocket or the i777, they seem identical speedwise, on quadrand I’m getting 3200 on my Skyrocket. Whoever is making the speed a big issue is a troll looking to make an issue when their really isn’t one. Lastly, it makes more sense to go with LTE since that’s where all phones in 2012 are headed and you will have higher resale value than being stuck with an old non-LTE i777.

I had the iPhone 4s last week and returned it. I had the iPhone 4 for 1.5 years previously and got pissed off that the 4s had the same exact screen and look, if they made the screen bigger, I would've got it, but I can't go back to a 3.5" screen anymore. Apple is starting to screw up, they got too cocky and think their $hit don't stink. So far, I'm really loving my Skyrocket, just make sure you get the case-mate popcap case, its a good combination.
Nobody can tell you what you will like. In each of the 2 respective forums you will not get a impartial answer to your question. I loved my sg2. Had it for over 30 days.
I don't really do too much rom flashing. I like bigger screens. I have noticed zero difference in real world use of the phone. No lag etc. That's the only real benchmark that matters, real world use. LTE is coming soon in my area.
I exchanged for skyrocket and I don't regret it.

Thank you. It's funny when people talk about low benchmarks and I ask them how the device actually feels; they almost always say, well it feels fine; quite snappy actually.
I have the original GS2 and part of me wished I got the skyrocket. The larger screen was significantly more appealing. Initially, I decided to keep the original. Ironically, after my 30 days passed, I had wished I got Skyrocket. I like the form factor and backing better on the i777, but the larger screen is nice enough to make me overlook it. I may end up buying the Skyrocket out of pocket, even though I do love my original GS2.
In a sentence; start with the Skyrocket. Keep your mind open to exchanging for something else if you want to do so later.
Gosh, I just read that the Vivid (which, thanks to your comments, I was just beginning to consider) only has 256K colors! Is that true?

Lol , my man. In all likelihood, I probably will actually.
Don't put too much stock in benchmarks.
As was stated earlier, real world feel is what matters.
Go to an ATT store, pick up each one, open some apps, surf the internet a bit, and then decide which one "feels" better to YOU.
For what it's worth, I had the SGSII for almost 30 days and thought it was a terrific phone. But I ended up with the Skyrocket and have absolutely no regrets.
I really can't notice a difference in the speed between the two but I am enjoying the larger screen and can't wait for LTE to come to my town.
Also, GPS is definitely better/faster/stronger, for me, on the Skyrocket than the SGSII.
Assuming you're upgrading from an inferior/older phone, any of these new models will be a huge step ahead.

[Q] Infuse Expectations?

I just bought a Infuse 4G on the AT&T website the other day, and heading to pick it up tomorrow. I was just wondering what the pro's and con's are of the phone. I have a grace period in case I don't like the phone and see if there's a better trade.
is this an upgrade? i seen it advertized for $19.99 at radioshack..i would go with the sg2,skyrocket, or vivid..but i bought the infuse on launch day,im happy with it
I've heard from several people the dual cores are slower than the infuse. I'm very happy with what I have at this point in time.

it's not that the dual cores are slower as a whole, but simply that there are less apps that can fully take advantage of it. I mean, using a skyrocket, theres like, slightly less delay flipping through a million menus, but on a day to day basis, its no problem.
expect a beautiful screen, and snappy response after you install one of the custom roms. If you're planning on using it as a music player, supercurio said it has the best audio chip/codec on the market right now. And avoid the samsung based roms if you do, they don't like reading ID3 tags properly.
as a note, i recommend CM7 with the thunderbolt script installed. fking amazing.
nothing really comes to mind for cons, i mean, it's fast, but not the fastest. is it fast enough? i'd say so. screens amazing as i already said, battery lasts me a good day with heavy usage. HD videos don't lag, i can play PSX games on it no problem, overall pretty solid
Skyrocket is fast on stock, but alot of others I have tested like bionic is slower then mine when running cm7. I benchmark both.

I would STRONGLY recommend returning the Infuse and getting the Galaxy S II (I777).
There is NO reason for anyone to purchase the Infuse new at this point.
Avoid the Skyrocket, it'll have the same problems as far as software updates availability as the Infuse, if not worse. At least the Infuse had 70% commonality with other devices. The ****rocket is at maybe 5% - it has a similar screen and that is it.
The I777 is 95% identical to Samsung's international flagship, the I9100.

Quoted for truth
The sgs2 attain i777 is often found for $0 - $50
I've had all three and to be honest I prefer the skyrocket, then the i777 then the infuse
Return it! Don't get an old device and be stuck with dying dev for 2 yrs.
Dev isn't dying on my end...I'm working hard to keep it going...all my spare time...I lime the infuse...even tho I will be dev for the skyrocket after christmas

I also purchased the Infuse on launch day. Im very happy with with. Im on Darky rom and very, very happy with it.. flawless! Just so dissapointed.. no updates. Just checked and TM Sensation is up for the GB update. I'll stick with this phone for the two years.

I'm with entropy. An infuse or skyrocket puts you at mercy of Samsung and att. An I9100 or i777 gives you options cuz Samsung cares about their international flagships. Even the i9000 still gets support.
But the infuse isn't a bad phone. It just lacks kernel devs and GB source code for att specific features.
When Samsung has a lte flagship that'll be the phone to get. but alot of what Samsung offered that made the galaxy s so good is now available in the market but better. At this point a nexus phone is a good choice cuz all the multimedia stuff is covered 3rd party.
About what you can expect the infuse has a dated processor that was ahead of it's time. What I mean is it has awesome multimedia support for a 2010 processor, infact most 2011 and early 2012 phones have exactly the same graphics processor. You will see lag on websites with a lot of content that you don't see on dual, core phones but nothing to complain about most of the time.
Alright both sides seem pretty equal. I would get SGSII but I haven't found it for anything less then $100 dollars, and I can get the infuse refurbished for a 1¢. Which if its not much slower or any problems I would like to save the money. But also if the difference is that large I rather spend the extra.

Personally I would just stay with the infuse and don't believe the hype...there's really not much difference....

[Q] Should I buy the Skyrocket?

I have a Motorola Atrix right now and was looking to buy the Skyrocket. I had the Samsung Captivate and really loved Samsung's Android devices.
Some questions I have about the phone:
-The Galaxy Nexus has a 720p screen, since the Skyrocket only has a WVGA screen, does that mean less icons on the screen?
-We don't have LTE in Seattle yet, but how is the battery life while on HSPA? And how is it on LTE?
-Since the processor that is in the Galaxy S II isn't compatible with LTE, is Qualcomm's dual-core as fast and smooth?
-Is the camera take good pictures, and is the video quality good?
Thanks for those who help!

Okay... Nexus is junk...next
I get 24-28+ hours on my LTE..
Snapdragon is more than capable for anybody's needs.. if all you want to do is do benchmarks, quadrants and play games all day.. Exynos is better. But we are in the real world so....
Camera is awesome.. this phone is awesome.. buy the phone and have fun.

Chubby_Skunk, I remember you from the Atrix forums . LTE is the way to go, impressive when you're under coverage. The battery life is great even on the Vivid. I went for the Vivid, the screen is the same qHD as the Atrix.

I remember you too! haha
I was going to go for the Vivid until I read reviews about it....
So I wanted the Galaxy S II and the Skyrocket seems like i'd be to big with the 4.5" screen and the AT&T GSII seems nice with the 4.3" screen.
Is there much of a noticeable difference between the 4.3" and 4.5"? it's only.2" bigger.
Is not that big of a difference (size wize), but I would go for the Skyrocket, is newer and have LTE. Make sure you read first what users are saying about the screen though, I've heard there are some pretty bad batches out there.

Appartently some people are saying the "screen" is not good...
I don't have any issues, nor do any of the 10 buddies of mine who own the same phone..
I was skeptical about switching from iPhone 4 to the Skyrocket due to its enormous size difference. After using for a day or two, I got used to it and the 4.5 inch screen really made a difference for me. However if you're switching from an OGS2, then it won't be that big of a difference but still good.
Girlfriend has the 4s, and she doesnt need to ask siri which is a better phone. i have had both att gs2's. The skyrocket is faster but the other is more refined. i like them both, but like skyrock speed
hey, my dad actually has the iphone 4 and he says all the time "hey whats that on your phone" because this phone is just so capable. I came a Sony arc and the speed alone should be enough to get this phone

24-28 hours on LTE?
I'm impressed.
May I ask what ROM you are using that achieves this battery life?
I have the Skyrocket and overall I think I made a mistake getting it.
** The skyrocket is a hastily put together phone. The plain SGS II is actually a better built phone. Even the Captivate was a much better built phone.
**The only reason for the Skyrocket hardware is to enable LTE for AT&T. The plain SGS II gives you 4G which should be more than enough, since LTE IS NOT AVAILABLE at most areas.
** The plain SGS II has far superior screen resolution.
** The exynos processor in plain SGS II even at 1.2 GHz is so much better.
** Unless you ABSOLUTELY want LTE, Skyrocket has not shattering advantage.
** The Skyrocket HD of course is a different question altogether.
** AND the HTC One X has the same specs as Skyrocket, with a HD screen and may be something to consider. Check this phone out too. http://www.mobilenapps.com/articles/1769/20120420/htc-one-x-release-date-att-may.htm#
Good luck !

Sorry, I think all ur main points are wrong frankly.
1) Build quality and quality control of the skyrocket has been excellent so far
2) I have access to 4g and LTE everywhere I go in all of Ontario, and let me tell u for what I use my phone for, late makes a WORLd or difference, 4g isnt even in the same league. This us basically just ur opinion
3) better screen resolution? where'd u find this info? link please?
4) find benchmarks showing me that exynos slaps the S3 1.5, please. Cuz I guarantee u won't. Sure if all u do is run benchmarks all day, yeah ifs faster. but in real world use u won't even be able to notice the difference. I'll take a pentaband radio that I can use on any carrier over 5% not even noticeable performance increase.
5) again ur opinion, see second point
6) skyrocket HD is same phone, better screen... so I don't understand this one
7). HTC One X has no SD card slot for expandable storage and lacks a removable battery, HUGE turnoffs for me ans several other users here, plus its HTC, and it may or may not come with a locked boot loader. Our dev took off out of the box, becuz we had no obstacles. Sammy's are definately the best for custom stuff.
