OK so on my open network at home o can connect but then I lose internet connectivity after about 5 minutes. Recently today though when I go to shut off wifi and bring it back on, it just reads error and won't let me check it back on or off. I then power cycle the phone and I'm back to square one with the 5 minute disconnect. Wtf

It may not be your phone.
I had the same issue but I reset and reconfigured my Cisco router

This is a motorola bug. It exists on the Atrix 2, Droid 1, Droid X, and Droid X 2.
It has something to do with the method the wireless radio in the phones notifies the AP that it is going into low power standby. So far I've been unable to determine the EXACT reason that it does this, but have a feeling its related to using WPA/WPA2 and sending the LPN to the AP with that enabled.
I'm trying to figure it out, and if any one else experiencing problems with wifi where it drops connectivity after 2-5 minutes, please let me know the following info:
Length of SSID
Brand of Router / model.
Encryption type: EG, WPA2/CCMP (CCMP=AES on some devices)
length of encryption key.
I'm going to try and find a way to fix this at the router, provided the settings are available.

I am experiencing exactly what you described, every time I connect to WPA2 network at my college I experience weird problems. For example when I stream music with GoogleMusic I can barely go through one song. On the other hand I have no problems at my home where I also use WPA2. The most confusing thing is that my phone acts weird on unsecured networks too.
Do you think this is a software issue ?
For those who are seeing the poor WiFi connections that lock up after a few minutes...
Go into your router settings and disable WMM.
I am told (by a reliable source) that the problem resides in some T.I. drivers commonly used in Moto phones and it's exacerbated by overly strict code in many routers.
In any event, I was suffering terribly unstable WiFi connections that would lock up every few minutes. As soon as I disabled WMM on the router, everything started working cleanly and has remained that way.

If you guys are having trouble connecting on to an invisible network,
Zen has noted that the keyboard, after a few flash, can insert additional characters. I noted these odd behaviors when using swype.
It is not as prevalent on android or stock samsung kb.
If you are try to connect, change the kb to sammy's or android.
If you have connected and dropping or can't connect, I would recommend trying my wifi-fix script in cwm. I'm curious to see if it works.
Power the router off and on is also a good idea. some routers are buggy or just need a power on/off.

Mine finally worked after toggling bluetooth, gps and airplane mode on and off.
I did notice the keyboard leaving extra spaces but as I caught it don't suspect that was the issue.
I've been using this router set up as is for years and have only recently started having the connectivity problems with phones I've put recent releases of revelation, emancipation or Zeus on. For some reason lately my cell signal at my apt has dropped drastically (majority of the time barely 1 bar; would get 3-4 bars when I moved in December) so not having wifi makes everything a real pain. I almost think att has black listed my account or something. I've tried multiple modems but problems present with each one.

I'm here writing on tapatalk and browsing and have noticed that all of a sudden the WiFi will go off, drop out and restart. I hadn't ticked the : best WiFi performance, which drains more battery, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.
I also have he app: power manager and I'm not sure if there is an app doing that to the WiFi.
Anyone else had this issue?
Edit: definitely having this issue. Best performance or going manual on the WiFi Settings seems to have settled it. Hope HTC comes up with an update for it...

I also tested the static rather than the automatic solution for the WiFi, and it tend to drop equally. Only way it doesn't drop seems to be if I use the: use best quality WiFi, which reduces the battery life tremendously!
By the way, this is not happening during te phone's sleep mode, but during normal operation.

Not sure if it's related, but there are definite wifi issues with the one s. Mines completely stock, no power managers etc. It locks onto wifi points that that have always worked well for me (work, home etc.) with my desire and never disconnects. It seems in this mode it uses much more power and even gets a little warm. I can have left home for 4 hours and it still thinks it's connected and then has no data connection. The only solution seems to be to disable and enable wifi again. It doesn't seem to be able to roam from ap to ap without getting stuck on one of them
I think this may be an issue with Android 4.0. I have a Transformer Prime tablet running 4.0 and I get the same thing. WiFi drops out for a few seconds and quickly reconnects. I have noticed that it only happens in the first 12-24 hours after my tablet has been restarted though. After about a day running solid it doesn't happen.
I had a Nexus Running 4.2 and the wifi was great so probably not Android , more radi problem as discussed on other threads

The WiFi signal on this current phone seems to be spot on. No signal drop with any case on or covering the top of the phone. Signsl doesn't go to sleep along with the phone being on idle and overall really pleased.
I must also add that this new phone seems to have a remarkably better battery life as well. With my usuall use of web, tapatalk, a couple of photos a bit of WiFi, continuous account sync etc, on auto brightness, im at 13:20 and I have the phone on 83% battery when on the previous handset with the WiFi problem I was eating up the battery really fast. I had exactly the same issue. Since I have changed the "option" / "wifi"/ "settings" / "extended" / "keep WLAN active in standby" = "never" (I don't know the correct terms in English), I haven't seen that problem anymore. I seems that the issue is standby-related, WLAN rescan won't start properly when waking up.
However, I don't think that this issue is related to the issue mentioned by the TO - it's the opposite.
I just noticed this issue when I left for work this morning. I have "Best Wi-Fi Performance" enabled, which was mentioned as a fix in previous posts, but it does not appear to be helping. When I leave for work and get into my office about 5 miles away it still shows as being connected to my home wifi network, when I try to use data like going to a webpage etc, it says "Data Connection Lost". Its like the phone doesnt know how to disconnect from a wifi network. I have the latest update to 1.84.531.2 710RD and still seems to have this issue. Have there been any updates from HTC or T-MO on this issue?
To follow up on this issue, I have called HTC and T-Mobile to find out if it is a known issue. They both told me that they were aware of the issue and that HTC is asking the carriers to report the issues customers are having back up to them. HTC said they are working on a software update that resolves the Wi-Fi disconnect issue. The T-Mobile rep said to have anyone else who is experiencing the issue to either call T-Mobile if they are your carrier so they can report the issue, or call HTC directly.

Been having this issue too. Called up T-Mobile and since I'm still within the 20 day window for return, they are sending me a new device. The girl that helped me didn't even want to talk about the issue or if it's been happening a lot. She didn't even ask if I had tried any trouble shooting. Just sent out new phone with free standard shipping. Works for me I guess, just hope it's hardware related, though I suspect it's software. We will see.

I also disabled best wifi performance and have not noticed the issue since. I dont know if its because of the factory reset or because I have disabled best performance. I have also changed "keep wifi on during sleep" to never and that may have contributed to fixing the problem. I really have no way to tell, and now that it appears to be working correctly, I dont want to mess with it

It happens to me when I'm in my apartment bedroom some on the far side (I normally plug it up at night to my right on the headboard) which is about furthest from my router I can get inside...but otherwise I don't have the issue when I'm closer. I've started wondering if the phone just doesn't pick up wi-fi as well, though in fairness I have a single-antenna fairly cheap Rosewill router (RNX-N150RT).

Yeah, I have the same issue. I've discovered that it doesn't disconnect if I'm within 5 feet of the access point, which isn't exactly a great option, but does suggest maybe a software fix or a straightforward hardware hack like the Atrix 2.

Possible solution - try this and see if it works for you
Was running into this problem on my new Pho Q (too fun calling it that), where it would drop wifi and report a connection was available on the left side, then connect again, every 15s to a min.
To resolve (at least so far now for me for about an hour):
Settings - Wifi - Menu - Advanced:
Uncheck Show Reminders
It seemed that having it popup a reminder of available networks could be related to it noticing my available network every few seconds, and it seems to have helped me. Try it and report back. :highfive:
Ok, seems its still happening, but far less often at least. When I have some time, I'll try to do an A-B-A test but it does seem better than it was before disabling the setting.

Someone thought it was related to smart actions - do you have any of those enabled?
I've never had any issues with wifi - and I've used many different types of routers and security models.
Have you tried changing your wireless channel on your router or gateway? By default most start on 6, so changing it to 1 or 11 might reduce interference from nearby wireless signals. Are you a long distance from your router/gateway?

Anyone have any luck fixing this? When my wife's photon Q connects to our home network, no problem. No drops whatsoever. But when she connects to her work WiFi, despite a strong signal, it would drop every few minutes.
So I just bought one of these Gnotes and I had trouble with the wifi right away: always dropping on DHCP. Set it to static and it seems to be better but not what I would say great still seems to stutter at times. Is this some setting in Samsung's config file or a bad wifi card/adapter. Router is not the issue running Buffalo WZN-HP 300 with DD-WRT all other devices connect fine. Question is has anyone noticed wifi improvements when switching to CM or another custom ROM vs Samnsung Orig firmware?
OK, testing while tethered to my phone's hotspot, the drops ceased so it appears that they ARE related to my home network...damn
Well read some where setting wireless to just "n" helped and it appears it did. Will continue to test and report. I reflashed router w latest ddwrt and that didnt fix tho.

Artem Russakovskii posted on g+ that the nexus 5 has issues with networks that use a 5 ghz signal. Apparently using another channel solves the problem. Similar to the issues chromecast/nexus 7 has on 5 ghz networks. Changing it is worth a shot, most routers have an option to change it.

Artem Russakovskii posted on g+ that the nexus 5 has issues with networks that use a 5 ghz signal. Apparently using another channel solves the problem. Similar to the issues chromecast has on 5 ghz networks. Changing it is worth a shot, most routers have an option to change it.

This is good advice, thank you.
It's worth noting for my particular issue my router does not have a 5 Ghz band.

Just happened to me again with YouTube. Video stopped playing half way through. The only way to get the video to finish was to turn off wifi and switch to LTE. I had wifi optimization off, and I do not have a 5GHz router.

Even though my router is not 5 GHz I just went into my phones settings, WiFi, Advanced and changed the WiFi Frequency band from Auto to 2.4 Ghz. Maybe that will help? It seemed to work right away without me having to turn wifi off and on again so there is that. I need to use it awhile though.
Do you have any antivirus programs running? I had to uninstall mine because it was causing wifi issues.

I've been having some pretty terrible Wi-Fi reception. Especially on my school's campus. There will be a router on the ceiling directly above me, and I'll get like one or two bars maybe, and terrible speeds.
Just tried turning off Wi-Fi optimization, maybe it'll work better.
UPDATE: This seems to have fixed it. I just downloaded an app at 6 MB/s from the play store in the same spot I've always had problems.

I am having the same issue with my N5, there's a thread at Android Central discussing this issue: http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-5/329226-nexus-5-wifi-problem-4.html
Basically, if I watch a YouTube video that's at least 5 minutes long, I won't be able to finish it as the video will pause at least one or two minutes after starting. This is not YouTube buffering the video either, the video will just pause forever.
Another test is open up Chrome and type words into the URL bar. Auto suggests will appear, if I keep doing this, sooner or later there will be no auto suggest appearing, suggesting network connection is either dropped or became very slow.
I am connecting to an Asus RT-N16 router in 2.4Ghz N mode. Tried turning off Wifi optimization, and other router settings (20Mhz spread, G only mode, other frequencies, etc) and same problem persists.
Since this problem is not as common, I am suspecting this maybe a router incompatibility between N5 and Asus Rt-N16. Anyone reading this thread, if you are having this (or not) issue, please post your router model + settings. Thanks.
I have (2) N5's, a white one and a black one. The black one is very "flaky" with regards to wifi and battery drain. I initially noticed the problem with battery drain where it would drop 20% in two hours with <1m of screen time. It would also go from 100% to 4% over the course of a day with <50m of screen time. I initially did not use the phone much as I was trying to figure out the drain problem, but now that I have been using it more, I've experienced wifi drop outs, where the signal indicator shows connected with a strong signal. I have never experienced that amount of battery drain or any wifi problems with the white one. Both connect to the same routers. I have an Asus 802.11AC router at home. The only AC devices I have are the N5's and my laptop, but the laptop and white N5 has never had trouble. At work I have several TP-Link 802.11N routers in the ceiling throughout our building and a Netgear 802.11N router in our IT sandbox lab. I've tried changing channels, 2.4 vs 5Ghz, updating router firmware and performing factory resets on my home router and the Netgear at work, all to no avail. I've done factory wipes on both phones many times trying to find some reason for one to behave in such a way where the other does not. All I can come up with is that the black one is defective. What's worse, some days the black one will work just fine on wifi and I'll see expected battery drain.
Another update: I went to Paradise Bakery (sandwich shop with free wifi) to test out the wifi. The N5 connected to the wifi fine, but unable to get pass the 'Agree to EULA' login page. I brought along my work HTC One and it was able to connect and get pass the agreement page with no problems. I am beginning to think there's something wrong with the wifi on my N5.
