I recently added a data plan on my SGS4G and can't get a data connection. I asked about this in another Q thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19353990#post19353990
but so far nothing has worked. I suspect that ultimately I will need to revert to out of the box virgin state to verify if its a software or hardware problem. However, after that test I want to be able to go back to my current state.
I've done both a CWM backup and a Titanium backup.
What are the steps I need to go back to vanilla state and then to the backed up state? Do I need both types of backups?
Well if you did a nandroid backup from CWM, everything is backed up, meaning your rom, modem, and all important files for your phone to operate. Titanium backup backs up all of your apps plus data for those apps, letting you restore them after a reset or a rom flash. Those two backups should cover your current phone state, nandroid restoring phone sensitive files and titanium restoring apps and user data. Be careful when restoring of different firmwares and such, that could cause a brick.
And to "reset" your device you can factory reset in CWM or in settings.
I'm not responsible for anything that happens, just providing some info.

Is there a way to restore individual apps/data from a nandroid backup? I forgot to run titanium backup before reflashing. I suppose I could flash the full backup, run titanium and then reflash, but hoping there's a shortcut...

Hello,
If anyone has any insight to this, I could use the help also. I have a Vibrant, running cyanogenmod. Yesterday my phone did a random reboot and never made it past the cyanogenmod splash screen. The only thing that gets the phone to boot back up normally is a factory reset/data wipe. The only problem is that I use an app called Andicar to track mileage on my car for work so that my company can pay me for my mileage. I have a Titanium backup from 10/3, but that means I lost all my mileage from between then and today, being 10/9. While I was trying to troubleshoot this, I did make a backup from the clockworkmod based recovery that I'm running. If I restore the data from that backup, it creates the same issue again, but I can still wipe and get back in.
Is there a way to restore data to a selective app from this "nandroid" backup?
Thanks for any insight, guys. I'm going to continue searching the forums, but I saw this gentlemen's question and thought it was very close to my own.
So my stock Infuse 4G is now Infused 2.1 and I LOVE it. So happy with the change. With that said, what is the number one BEST option to backup the phone in case I do anything stupid? I'm usually very thorough but sometimes I act too quickly.
I'm assuming booting in Recovery and doing the backup there is a good step, is there anything better? Never used Titanium but I see it mentioned a good deal but it seems that you can use it for some things yet not others. I just want a verified safe and secure method.
Also, another question if I may. Since I didn't do any type of backup to begin with, is it safe to assume I can't get back to Froyo at this point? Not that I really want to but I'd like to know either way.
Thanks!

You can get back to Froyo but not without wiping your data.
Nandroid backups (from Recovery) can restore your phone to an EXACT state - apps, data, and ROM.
TiBu is fairly flexible and, for example, can take all of your installed apps, back them up along with their data, and restore the missing apps when you switch ROMs. (Be EXTREMELY careful restoring system data or data for non-missing apps - 90% of the time it will break.)
I use Call Logs Backup and Restore and SMS Backup and Restore to back up what TiBu can't
Ok so if I simply want to make one big global backup, the Nandroid backup is a good way to go? I'm not too concerned with backing up stuff individually, more of a 'once a month' type of backup so if something disastrous happens, I can get back to a working state.
Also, if I were to do something that maybe caused a boot loop or some other type of bricked scenario, what is the process for restoring the backup? As in, how do you get back into the Recovery option if you can't boot into the OS to begin with?

For that, you have the Ultimate brick solution though I've never had the need to try it.
I've been switching roms quite a bit lately. For each and everytime I :
(1) Do a Tibu backup of all system and apps
(2) Do a Nandroid backup (either from red cwm or from ROM mgr)
The Tibu is the logical backup while the Nandroid is the physical image backup.
So far, I've gone to Serendipity (too many issues) back to my trusted 1.6 without much effort. The Nandroid restore is initially not 100%, some of my shortcuts like gosms and my unlocker setup was messed up. But then I'll go into Tibu, check to see what apps are missing and just restore those. In my case, after restoring gosms and reboot, all is good. I think the apps that have a system equivalent, will need to be restored individually.
However, that said, I haven't been too successful with Tibu on restoring *all* apps installed under Froyo (Infused 1.6) to GB (S7). This is even with the pro's automated method. This is likely so because those apps don't work well with GB and nothing to do with Tibu.
I've been using Titanium Backup for over a year. Third different phone, and maybe 30 different ROM's. I've never had a problem what so ever. Just remember rule #1, when switching ROM's with TitBU... restore "missing apps and data" ONLY! And you'll be fine.

+1
I second this. Moved between multiple phones, and hard-to-count number of roms, and TiBu was always there to help me out
Hey guys,
I recently bought an HTC One S. I came from an HTC Amaze 4G, and thus I backed up everything in Titanium Backup *AND* SMS Backup and Restore.
Thank goodness I backed up my texts in SMS B&R.
When I unlocked the bootloader and rooted the device, I went to install TB and restore missing apps and all system data.
I have never had this happen before, but when I rebooted the phone afterwards it said "Loading" on the HTC Sense screen and stayed there forever. It asked a few questions like Facebook login, etc. but still remained stuck on "Loading."
I eventually gave up and decided to take matters in my own hands. I figured that it's likely HTC Sense 3.6 data files were not compatible with 4.0 to a degree to cause issues, so I went into settings and cleared out the data for HTC Sense, and rebooted the phone.
When I rebooted the phone I was finally able to go into the messages app. Turns out I had a new text. NONE of my text message threads were there!!!
I am restoring them right now with SMS B&R.
I don't think this can be an ICS thing because on the Amaze I restored a TB backup the same exact way to a new ICS ROM and everything was fine. Has to be HTC Sense.
Anyhow, I just wanted to warn you guys. Don't trust a TB backup by itself from another device to the HTC One S. It may not work.
I see no reason to believe it won't work if coming from another phone with Sense 4.0, however I would be cautious and AT LEAST backup your text messages with SMS Backup and Restore.
It's still in the process of restoring. I am thinking that should surely work, but until it's done we won't know for certain. Will be certain to update this thread.
PS: I know some of you believe that you should never restore system data when going to a new device/rom (even though this is my 2nd post I've been lurking for quite a while :-D (as a guest)). I prefer to have all my stuff restored. If it causes a problem I am willing to go back and re-flash the rom

you cant restore system data from one phone to another, Thats a recipe for disaster. Even restoring from one ROM to another is risky...
Only ever restore apps and app data, Not anything else.. Ive been using TB for about 2 years now.. Never had a single issue with it

@ azzledazzle, did u see this? )
yes i saw it, but i dont get why you like to restore system data...
there is nothing of use in it if you are restoring using the same ROM, the data will be in that ROM anyway.
If you are restoring on a new ROM, you cant restore the old data lol
you like to restore system data, yet if you have troubles you wipe and skip restoring data..
Why not just skip system data altogether ?
You sound like you have OCD or something

System data saves the wallpaper, all icons, folders, etc. in the native launcher, alarms, etc. etc. which is not restored with apps. System data also saves the text messages, and restores them WAY faster than SMS Backup & Restore.
I've never had a problem restoring them until now. I tried one time not restoring system data, following the advice of someone on here who said it was pointless, and ended up losing system stuff. After that, never again do I restore without restoring system data.
Last night I was trying out some different roms using philz touch recovery. Then the backup I made of my daily driver, MIUI, wouldn't restore. I tried doing a custom restore as that has worked in the past when my full backup wouldn't restore. Still wouldn't work. So i tried some other ROMs. Avatar ROM, OSE, and even MIUI were giving me issues, and at some point I lost connectivity I believe. I went to bed with MIUI installed, but not running. Today after not having calls, texting, data, etc. in addition to MIUI repeatedly asking me to set a mobile data cap/limit, then not letting me click on anything when trying to set it, I decided to go back to stock in hopes that it would restore connectivity. I used ODIN to flash a stock from August I had, the file was "KIES_HOME_I535VRBMF1_1152558_REV09_user_low_ship. tar.md5" which is android 4.1.2. So now I'm back on stock with o root and still no connectivity.
Under status my phone shows Network as "Unknown", Service state as "Out of service", Mobile network state as "Disconnected", Mobile network type as "Unkown" and IMEISV as "00" if that makes any difference.
I'll be re-rooting and probably flashing MIUI again, but how do I get connectivity back?
Thanks so much!

Okay so I restored my EFS/IMEI and I have my connectivity back. Unfortunately, I still can't restore the backup I made of my daily driver (MIUI). In an extremely frustrating turn of events, all my Titanium Backup backups of apps are gone. I just purchased TB Pro yesterday. Anyone have any ideas? And is it generally a good idea to stay away from "Philz Touch Recovery"?

Are the backups kept on the SD or internal? If so, I assume they got deleted when I ODINed back to stock.

Correct. TiBu backs up on internal memory unless you change to SD card in settings. I learned this the hard way as well .
If I were you I would try an alternate version of CWM to see if you could restore your backup successfully. Philz recovery is based on CWM, correct? That way you would get all your app data back. Also you could maybe try to pull the Titanium data from your nandroid backup (assuming it's on your SD card), but I'm not sure how to go about this.

I had the same ideas, but since I can't locate the nandroid now, I assume I must have backed up to internal due to low memory on my SD. Lost all my xmas photos as well, which is ironic because the whole reason I was messing around with different roms was because I couldn't get instagram working with MIUI. Ah well, think I'll be sticking with CWM as backups made with philz have failed to restore in the past as well.
I plan to backup my phone with smart switch to reset the phone and restore from backup but someone mentioned that I shouldn't do the restore from back up because bugs and problems will be restore from the back up.
Is this correct?
Thank you

Nonsense. You are just returning your DATA and apps. It doesn't matter if you install from google play or from APK (backup). Yes, you will get more data, some may be redundant, but I don't think you will encounter bugs. Maybe in single applications, but that is extremely rare, and you would have noticed if you have any bugs NOW (before backup)
