So my stock Infuse 4G is now Infused 2.1 and I LOVE it. So happy with the change. With that said, what is the number one BEST option to backup the phone in case I do anything stupid? I'm usually very thorough but sometimes I act too quickly.
I'm assuming booting in Recovery and doing the backup there is a good step, is there anything better? Never used Titanium but I see it mentioned a good deal but it seems that you can use it for some things yet not others. I just want a verified safe and secure method.
Also, another question if I may. Since I didn't do any type of backup to begin with, is it safe to assume I can't get back to Froyo at this point? Not that I really want to but I'd like to know either way.
Thanks!

You can get back to Froyo but not without wiping your data.
Nandroid backups (from Recovery) can restore your phone to an EXACT state - apps, data, and ROM.
TiBu is fairly flexible and, for example, can take all of your installed apps, back them up along with their data, and restore the missing apps when you switch ROMs. (Be EXTREMELY careful restoring system data or data for non-missing apps - 90% of the time it will break.)
I use Call Logs Backup and Restore and SMS Backup and Restore to back up what TiBu can't
Ok so if I simply want to make one big global backup, the Nandroid backup is a good way to go? I'm not too concerned with backing up stuff individually, more of a 'once a month' type of backup so if something disastrous happens, I can get back to a working state.
Also, if I were to do something that maybe caused a boot loop or some other type of bricked scenario, what is the process for restoring the backup? As in, how do you get back into the Recovery option if you can't boot into the OS to begin with?

For that, you have the Ultimate brick solution though I've never had the need to try it.
I've been switching roms quite a bit lately. For each and everytime I :
(1) Do a Tibu backup of all system and apps
(2) Do a Nandroid backup (either from red cwm or from ROM mgr)
The Tibu is the logical backup while the Nandroid is the physical image backup.
So far, I've gone to Serendipity (too many issues) back to my trusted 1.6 without much effort. The Nandroid restore is initially not 100%, some of my shortcuts like gosms and my unlocker setup was messed up. But then I'll go into Tibu, check to see what apps are missing and just restore those. In my case, after restoring gosms and reboot, all is good. I think the apps that have a system equivalent, will need to be restored individually.
However, that said, I haven't been too successful with Tibu on restoring *all* apps installed under Froyo (Infused 1.6) to GB (S7). This is even with the pro's automated method. This is likely so because those apps don't work well with GB and nothing to do with Tibu.
I've been using Titanium Backup for over a year. Third different phone, and maybe 30 different ROM's. I've never had a problem what so ever. Just remember rule #1, when switching ROM's with TitBU... restore "missing apps and data" ONLY! And you'll be fine.

I second this. Moved between multiple phones, and hard-to-count number of roms, and TiBu was always there to help me out

Rooted last night with Buddy's and so for everything seems to be working. I am assuming it was a success. I installed Titanium Backup and it allows me to remove the ATT bloatware etc...Is there anything I need to check to verify I am rooted and if so, correctly? I went through all my apps that I restored from ""MyBackup" app and everything is working.
I guess the next step is to learn how to use the installed ROM Manager and Superuser. Not sure what it is all involved but willing to learn. I am using Buddy's stock ROM that came with the program. Any negatives using this ROM? Before trying others, I have to figure out how to flash a ROM. I will be looking for a ROM without bloatware and sense. I use launcher pro and will stick with it. I prefer a smooth fast and solid performance.
I think my first mod would be to change my battery indicator in my notification bar and customize this area a bit. Any suggestions were to get started?
Thanks
If you want fast and stable w/ being senseless, di11i's Gingerbeast is as good as it gets. If you want fast, stable w/ a lil more tweaking capabilities, CM7 is for you.
I use both on a regular basis and each has their pros.

There are guides on every rom thread for flashing roms. If you don't do well with reading instructions and are more hands on I found this video and it helped me the first time.

Good job mayne. I used ATTN's method and the WiFi did not work with the ROM in that kit. I posted here asking about it right about the point where you are, waited 1/2 hour, said eff it, and flashed one of the custom roms from the Dev section, which fixed the issue.
I noticed my data speeds were not as good as stock, and I live in a backhauled area and was getting >7Mbps down stock. I noticed I didn't have the latest ATT OTA radio, so I read some more in the radio thread, and flashed the latest ATT radio and RIL's, and the data speeds I was accustomed to returned.
The ROM I flashed is really really nice. IT is Sense based, like the stock AT&T. Some of the ROM's people will suggest are basic Android UI, while others are Sense based. I don't mind the Sense. It is technically a memory hog, and I only use one of the Scenes provided, but I like it. There are many ROM's to chose from that are basically stable. I never got stock GPS to perform to my expectations. However, the first ROM I flashed combined with the latest OTA radio amazing fixed the effin GPS!! Wow it's really responsive now.
My first ROM had/has a couple bugs. One was taken care of with re-flashing the ROM I chose again. The ROM I have now has one really small minor bug. I am living with it, as stock also had more major issues (GPS). The bug is associated with the kernel. This is another thing one can flash and change. I tried another kernel out vs. the ROM, but decided t had other variables with the performance I was experiencing, while other posters here love the optional kernel. Choices choices...
Be careful with Titanium back up. In general, do NOT use it to back up system data as part of the ROM flashing process. Usually flashing different ROM's from different dev's require full system wipe, like you did with the rooting process. It looks tempting to use, but multiple issues are discerned by reading the thread if this selection is used in TB. I suggest just using it for App backup, and if a problem with the flashing, revert to your Nandroid backup of your last functional ROM. Learn about that too....
Anyway good luck. I doubt youare going to stay with whatever ROM is in Bubby's kit...so just trying to give you a few pointers...since you asked , and because I like this sentence in your OP", "Not sure what it is all involved but willing to learn." yes you will...the radio thread, the one stickied page of this forum, are invaluable places to start and bookmark...

A few things that will make your flashing easier, because once you flash one custom ROM, you will end up flashing 10...
Create a Nandroid backup before flashing a new ROM. To create a Nandroid backup, follow these steps:
1. Get into Clockwork recovery. You can do this one of two ways: Go into ROM Manager and select boot into recovery. The other way is to boot the device while holding down the volume key. After the device boots, you'll see an option for Recovery. Select that. Also, some ROMs allow you to go into recovery by holding down the power button then selecting recovery.
2.Once in Clockwork recovery, select backup and restore, then backup.
The backup will be stored on your SD card in the \clockwork\backup directory.
This type of backup has EVERYTHING in it (except the radio). If you restore from this backup, and boot your device, it will be exactly as it was when you backed up--all apps, data, settings, etc.
I recommend backing up the backup directory to your PC. The backups are pretty big.
You'll end up with a whole collection of backups (I have about 10.), one for each ROM you've flashed. If you decide one day (or hour ) that you want to use a different ROM, all you have to do is copy the backup from your PC to your SD card and then restore from within recovery (wipe data/cache/dalvik first ).
...
Do not restore data using Titanium Backup if the backup was performed on a different ROM. It can really screw things up.
...
A lot of people ask about backing up and restoring SMS and MMS. The BEST way I have found is via Handcent sms. This is a great free replacement for the stock messaging app. It has an option to backup and restore both SMS and MMS messages. It work really, really well. The backup and restore does have a cost though. I think 3.99 a year.
To me, it's completely worth it. Using this with a Nandroid restore, and I can be up on a new ROM in 5 minutes, with all data up to date.

or you could just use GO SMS Pro (its free) to do the sms/mms backup restore....or an app called SMS backup+ (free) and it sends a copy of everything to your gmail so you dont have to restore all that stuff, its all in your gmail, mms and all
GO SMS PRO also gives the ability to back up messages and restore all messages... it's free app.

Hey isn't the ROM in buddy's kit froyo? If you want gingerbread you're gonna have to flash a custom ROM...
I am sending this thread with the WiFi hotspot teathering to my PC, that I opted not to enable stock because I have an unlimited data plan and I think paying 20 or whatever they want is stupid. My home internet is dropping in and out this morning for some reason..wah lah! I got tethering to phone's network and internet access! Woo hoo! And jsut as fast as my home WiFi. This is exactly one of the things I had in mind when rooting this phone. This is awesome!!!! Oh but back to the OP...
Oh yeah!!!! If you flash a new ROM, or even notice with bubby's kit ROM now, that data speed is not what you expect, or doesn't work at all, check the APN settings under Settings>Wireless Networks>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names. The ROMs as flashed may not have all the settings correct. There are posts and threads about setting the proper APN's for proper AT&T network access and it's easy schmeezee. Just one little thing that took me a few minutes to figure out initially while I was getting data speed of 200kbps down vs. the 7Mbps I'm used to...

No. Do not restore the Nandroid back up. That is for if you have problems with your new ROM, and need to get to a known good restore point. It is there if you need it....start checking out your new ROM .
ok think I might have it
Rom manger
reboot in recovery
backup and restore
advanced restore
pick my download
????
Then it ask, resore boot or restore system or restore data or restore casche or restore sd-ext
I am thinking I need to pick "restore sd-ext" correct???????? to download my nabdriod backup???
Ok then backing up and re grouping
The new rom is installed, it looks nice. Now I want to reload my apps and system settings?
Using TB to restore my apps at this time. It loading.....
Ok I have not done anything but root and unlock my infuse.
I am thinking about installing Infused 2.1.0.
I have not backed up anything, but there are apps that I want to keep that have been taken out of the stock.
If I restore missing apps with data, will that keep all of the apps I have? Im just wondering what the difference is between restore missing apps and back up all user apps?
Also, it is my understanding that the ROM extends the battery time. Is this true?
Sorry for being a pesky n00b

When you restore ,just restore apps. Don't restore data. The data might cause a conflict.

this isn't true - it isn't going to cause any conflicts with "missing apps" that are being freshly installed to your phone on a new ROM (i.e., not replacing another version of that app).
the only thing that you really need to avoid is restoring system data of any kind. that will cause conflicts with your phone, SMS, e-mail, etc. restoring "missing apps" should work just fine, even if you want to restore the data also.
as for battery life - yes, custom ROMs tend to get better battery life than stock froyo does.
good luck, and remember - you can always revert to stock froyo!
So right now I'm using CWM to do my nandroid backups. I make one after I make any major updates or changes - call me a worry wort. I also use Titanium Backup.
With doing this, obviously it takes up a bit of room so I offload them to my computer. The issue here is if I do something detrimental and need to restore, I don't know of a way to get the backup files back onto the internal memory since you can't access them via CWM, if that makes sense.
I guess I can simply keep just the latest backup saved on the phone itself but I'm wondering if there's another method that I'm not aware of. Is there a way to get files copied to the internal memory if you can't fully boot into the OS?
Oh and one other question: Does a nandroid backup include every single item? Basically is it a 100% clone of the device or are some thing left out? Basically if I tried a completely different rom and then decided to go back to an entirely different rom, would I simply be able to restore it and be up and running? The last restore I did seems to indicate it does but that was going from different versions of the same rom.

Ok that's what I figured; read something a bit ago which seemed to say something else.
So if I want to test a few completely different rom setups and make a nandroid backup of each one, I could essentially swap between them whenever I want by simply restoring them and I'll get back to the exact state as I was at the time they were made? Menus and all?
So apparently a kernel change will not get reverted via nandroid. Anything else? Just tried Entropy's daily driver and apparently it's a no go for me. Restored via nandroid and still freezes during 'X' boot animation.
I was running Infusion 1.1 and made sure to reset the VC O/C back to stock and reboot before updating...
So I have a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini and wanted to update it to Android 2.2 . I searched how to install xRecovery and succesfully installed Android Froyo 2.2 . I followed every instruction for the install but what I think destroyed me was Factory Reset on the xRecovery menu. After I selected it to back up my Android 2.1 it did succesfully so, I then pressed wiped all data BUT I had not backed up anything. Neither contacts nor messages nor calls. So after seeing on my succesfull that I didn't have those things I decided to restore my previous backup, thinking that all my data will return. Here it gets even worse! I selected Restore in the recovery menu and it restarted. But the phone was stuck at the SE logo and no matter if I restarted the phone, it would go there again. So I decided to get the Flashtool and restore my phone and now it has restored Android 2.1 and ALL the apps, notes, calendar events, contacts, messages, call logs are gone. And the worst is I did not even back up anything of these! I want them back so bad! Also xRecovery got uninstalled. Is there anything I can do or should I deal with the fact that I was an idiot and did all these crap? Please if you know a solution that can bring my data back post it now!
Thanks!
Please don't hesitate posting if you know anything about the subject.
I'm pretty sure you're screwed there mate, but for future reference, you should use Titanium Backup. It backs up all your apps, settings, contact information etc. As for messages and your call log, you can use an app called SMS backup, which will backup your call log and your SMS/MMS messages to your gmail account.
If you did a backup from xrecovery, you can restore everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) from your old 2.1 ROM incl. apps and calander and messages and whatever. You just need to reinstall xrecovery (I trust you know how as you've done it before) and go to the backup/restore menu and press restore and your previous backup should appear.
Try restoring it when you have the stock 2.1 ROM because I think sometimes going down doesn't work. Similar thing happened to me when I tried to restore my 2.1 ROM from 2.3 on my X10.

Thanks for your answer mate Well as I said I reinstalled xRecovery after flashing via PC to my old Android 2.1 which I am in now but instead of making a full restore, I selected Advanced Restore and restored the data. As a result, not only did nothing restore to my phone but it got the default settings again, you know when you open it for the first time. So should I risk a full restore or the same thing will happen?

Oh dear. I'm not sure what else you can do because if that was the only backup you made, I don't think much can be done. Maybe someone else might be able to tell you how to reflash your data by unzipping the backup file or something, but I can't really do much unfortunately. Sorry about that
Take this as a lesson. Always (and I do mean ALWAYS) backup data and things when you have to flash a new ROM or anything. Titanium backup is perfect for apps (and free too) and for data, I recommend MyBackup Pro. I've got the paid version, but I think the free version can backup your messages and contacts and all that data. Also, I think Android has the option to backup your contacts as well and bear in mind that MyBackup Pro isn't 100% perfect (e.g. it doesn't work properly if you have no gmail account attached, as I found out when I tried flashing a new ROM to a friend's phone) and that you can never have too many backups (although you do tend to fill the SD card with backups if you do too many ). Another user may be able to help you with retrieving data if you're lucky, but otherwise, you might have to move on as life must keep going on

Hey guys,
I recently bought an HTC One S. I came from an HTC Amaze 4G, and thus I backed up everything in Titanium Backup *AND* SMS Backup and Restore.
Thank goodness I backed up my texts in SMS B&R.
When I unlocked the bootloader and rooted the device, I went to install TB and restore missing apps and all system data.
I have never had this happen before, but when I rebooted the phone afterwards it said "Loading" on the HTC Sense screen and stayed there forever. It asked a few questions like Facebook login, etc. but still remained stuck on "Loading."
I eventually gave up and decided to take matters in my own hands. I figured that it's likely HTC Sense 3.6 data files were not compatible with 4.0 to a degree to cause issues, so I went into settings and cleared out the data for HTC Sense, and rebooted the phone.
When I rebooted the phone I was finally able to go into the messages app. Turns out I had a new text. NONE of my text message threads were there!!!
I am restoring them right now with SMS B&R.
I don't think this can be an ICS thing because on the Amaze I restored a TB backup the same exact way to a new ICS ROM and everything was fine. Has to be HTC Sense.
Anyhow, I just wanted to warn you guys. Don't trust a TB backup by itself from another device to the HTC One S. It may not work.
I see no reason to believe it won't work if coming from another phone with Sense 4.0, however I would be cautious and AT LEAST backup your text messages with SMS Backup and Restore.
It's still in the process of restoring. I am thinking that should surely work, but until it's done we won't know for certain. Will be certain to update this thread.
PS: I know some of you believe that you should never restore system data when going to a new device/rom (even though this is my 2nd post I've been lurking for quite a while :-D (as a guest)). I prefer to have all my stuff restored. If it causes a problem I am willing to go back and re-flash the rom

you cant restore system data from one phone to another, Thats a recipe for disaster. Even restoring from one ROM to another is risky...
Only ever restore apps and app data, Not anything else.. Ive been using TB for about 2 years now.. Never had a single issue with it

@ azzledazzle, did u see this? )
yes i saw it, but i dont get why you like to restore system data...
there is nothing of use in it if you are restoring using the same ROM, the data will be in that ROM anyway.
If you are restoring on a new ROM, you cant restore the old data lol
you like to restore system data, yet if you have troubles you wipe and skip restoring data..
Why not just skip system data altogether ?
You sound like you have OCD or something

System data saves the wallpaper, all icons, folders, etc. in the native launcher, alarms, etc. etc. which is not restored with apps. System data also saves the text messages, and restores them WAY faster than SMS Backup & Restore.
I've never had a problem restoring them until now. I tried one time not restoring system data, following the advice of someone on here who said it was pointless, and ended up losing system stuff. After that, never again do I restore without restoring system data.
