i am currently traveling around and i have bought the sim unlock code for the Infuse and it works great. i can use the sim cards from Taiwan and South Africa without a problem.
But the 3G capability on the sim cards are not working on the Infuse. i tried with my other phone i bought unlocked GS2 (international version) and the 3G was working great
do i need to root in order for the Infuse to be able to connect to 3G with other country's sim card? or i just need to do some setting on the phone?
please help, it's annoying carrying this big phone and unable to use it properly
thanks
You will probably need to put in the correct APN settings for your carrier. Many of the other ROMs will update the APN automatically, but the stock
ROM does not.

As PVD04 said thats an APN problem, go into google and search for the company you like for example i use 3g here in mexico and i typed " Telcel APN configuration" (Telcel is my carrier)
Do the same for your carrier on the country you currently are, then go into--->Settings--->Wireless and network--->Mobile Networks--->APN (access Point Names) and configure a new one typing the data you found about your overboard carrier.
That will fix it.
Also... i know its already done but... you dont need to buy the unlock code" many samsung phones can be unlocked for free Infuse can, searchf or the "how to unlock" thread next time =)

Hi everyone, so i have a verizon galaxy s 3 and I moved to mexico city from LA. i was going to try the sim unlock method that is posted on the development forum but i actually decided to unlock and root the phone first. later i installed the JellyWiz ROM and to my surprise when i inserted the Telcel sim card, it started working.
I later saw that i could make calls/text and received but i had no data at all. i read that i had to input the APN manually so i called telcel and they were nice enough to actually give them to me. after putting the info in, i got a "G" icon and i started to get some data, but it was not 3G and when i drive around town, i only get data sometimes.
since im a new member i cant port a question in the development forum so im stuck doing it here lol does anyone have any ideas??? im not sure if its just the custom rom that is the problem or the verizon phone doesn't have a compatible 3g radio here in Mexico??? im so lost and running out of hacking talent here hahahaha i put in the
Just to let you know this is where all questions go. Also my guess is Verizon probably has different 3g towers.
Aloja search tty searching for the correct modem try to find a modem for your device that is similar to international version XXDLID
This is a total modem issue I suggest look for the iusacell modems they work on wCDMA and CDMA to telcel has no CDMA any more
Or go to telcel and buy the new usim with 4glte that ads all connectivity support

Cozumel?
I too am looking to use a local SIM while traveling to Cozumel. I am running CleanRom 5.0 which is based on VLBK1 JellyBean Leak3.
What do I need to do to get data access while in Cozumel?
I've read that the update will bring new global roaming capability, so has anyone tried to stick a GSM SIM into the phone yet? Does the new JB update bring unlocked 3G GSM?
No, it does not. I updated to 4.1.1 bone stock and got it to register on T-Mobile's network, but there is no way to change APN's, so data and text/mm do not work.
Now, before the update you could root and get a program to add in the APN of whichever network you wanted... folks (including myself) have had it on AT&T and T-Mobile's GSM networks, albeit without WCDMA ("3g"). Check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895684 for progress on getting WCDMA working on the 1900 band. The phone works on the 2100 band out of the box, but no US carrier uses that for WCDMA.
Okay, that said, post-update, I am sure the same APN tricks that worked pre-update, will work now, but sadly one has to be rooted to do that. Attached are two screenshots from while I was farking about with it.
Why not root, then? No disadvantages that I can see

I like how they're legally supposed to have it unlocked but still, here we are a half a year later.

To be honest, I'm amazed that VZW is allowing you to use another carrier's GSM SIM at all without some sort of unlock code (since this is the case with most phones sold in this country).
I assumed that their "Global Roaming" capability meant that you can take your SGS3 with the VZW SIM to countries (e.g. everywhere other than the USA) that only have GSM (WCDMA/HSDPA) and pay Verizon's extortion (roaming) fees. Maybe the lack of unlock is due to the fact that the phone's primary radios are LTE and CDMA?
If someone can confirm that rooting the phone will allow you to change the APNs it would be greatly appreciated. My family is vacationing in Costa Rica this winter. I've already acquired a couple of unlocked AT&T phones that we plan to use with local prepaid SIM cards, but it'd be nice to be able to have the option of using my I535 there as well.
Thanks!

Yep, had it on T-Mobile and AT&T (GSM only) here in the states, and worked great on O2 (with HSPA+ YAY) in Germany. Page 6 for my screenshots of Domestic carriers, page 9 for screenshot of me on O2.

Its not as cut and dry as that. If you have to root the phone to move carriers technically you are in the wrong. If that is what you mean by unlocked.

Actually you are wrong. He is referring to the FCC ruling. And we should not need to root to be unlocked. I think that is the point he was trying to make.
Does the inability to change APN affect only the domestic US carriers or is it true for any country's Sim card you put in for gsm use. (Verizon global phones have in the past operated where domestic sims don't work but international ones do)

I recently updated to the leaked K3 while traveling on business in the Philippines. While voice and text work, there is no way to add any new APN settings in both GSM/UMTS and Global modes. When clicking on Menu in the APN settings, the only option is to restore to default.
Note that while voice and text do work, there is a notification i the notification menu stating "Non-Verizon SIM: Sorry, this SIM card is not supported. Please..."
I believe that the frequency the carrier runs on is GSM900. Hope that helps clarify things. I spent way too much time trying to get 3G to work over here to no success.
Has anyone just tried using Verizon's Global Data Plan ($25 for 100 MB)? Is the S3 somehow not compatible with that plan?
I'm looking at getting the VZW S3 but I've heard all kinds of things about getting the Verizon S3 to work globally pre/post JB update. I know the local sim rates are much cheaper, but for an occasional traveler this is supposed to be the easy solution.
OK, so I am not an expert here but I know enough to give information that should help answer my question.
I have a Verizon (CDMA) Samsung Galaxy S3 (SCH-I535). I'd like to use this phone with a NET10 BYOD SIM card, but I'm not sure it will work. By all indications, my phone is a world phone that includes a GSM band. I say that because I can scan and attempt to connect to both AT&T and a local cell company that are both GSM services. In other words, I can select GSM/UMTS as a network option and it appears to work.
Trouble is, I don't have access to a GSM SIM, so there isn't any way for me to test this without spending money on the SIM card. SO in a round about way, I want to know if this will work. Can I buy a NET10 BYOD SIM, select GSM/UMTS under "Mobile Networks" in teh settings, and expect phone, text, and data to work?
I'm especially hoping to hear from people with the SCH-I535 Verizon GS3 if you've ever done this.
If this is not possible, is there any other BYOD SIM program that will allow for phone, text, and data in a CDMA Verizon phone? If so, what is it?
Thanks everyone.
If Verizon has not unlocked the phone off their carrier, then it will not work. (If you have the Jelly Bean Update, then its unlocked) If it is unlocked, then your in luck.
Mind you that I dont have this phone. But your phone is capable of ATT networks. Just avoid T-Mobile networks unless you want to be on EDGE.
Clarification

EDIT: No feasible solution found, so I had the device sold. Question closed.
UPDATE ON THE ISSUE: It seems that it would not recognize WCDMA networks (GSM works properly), hence no signal on my WCDMA-only SIM card. Any ideas?
Hello all, new joining the Relay 4G forums
Long story short, so I got my Relay 4G today, but it just wouldn't fully recognize my China Unicom SIM card. Symptoms and information:
1) No signal
2) Correctly displays my carrier's name, but says "emergency calls only"
3) Can search for available carrier networks, including China Unicom, but fails to register on the network - it says "unable to connect, try later"
4) The device has a correct IMEI instead of a generic one
5) Doesn't prompt me to enter SIM UNLOCK CODE when I first plugged in the SIM card
6) SIM unlocking procedures posted in the forum doesn't help - the phone should be unlocked when I bought it
7) It recognizes another SIM card from China Mobile (WTF!!) and works properly
8 ) China Unicom uses the 2100MHz band, which is supported by Relay 4G
So now I'm out of ideas... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

...So this phenomenon means this really is SIM-locked? Good, I'll revert to ICS and try unlocking with that method...
One question: why doesn't it prompt me to enter unlock code when I inserted the SIM?
@croogrog It didn't turn out to be that simple... SIM unlock procedures didn't work at all even though I got all the timings right. I think the problem isn't caused by SIM lock... But what can it be?

If other SIMs are working and you are able to call someone your phone was unlocked when you got it.
If your SIM isn't working it could be that you need a new one from your provider.
I had that problem years ago. My phone was too new ...or my card too old.

From a local importer at TaoBao (China's equivalent of eBay).
UPDATE ON THE ISSUE: I changed my SIM card for a new one at my carrier's but still won't recognize. Adding in the symptom that it can recognize another China Unicom SIM, I guess I can conclude that the problem lies within this particular SIM.

Best test would be to try another carrier sim all together. Not china unicom. See if the phone takes it. That way you will know for sure that it's unlocked and works. Unfortunately, there's no way to check if it's unlocked, other than to test sim cards
My next suggestion would be to consult samsung for a warranty repair, because your phone might be faulty. Or consider asking the seller that you got it from to send you another one. Let us know if you still need help

1. I checked with a China Mobile SIM and it works. Also, as said before, another China Unicom SIM also works. Only this specific SIM doesn't. It IS unlocked when I purchased it.
2. No way for a warranty - I'm in China and this is a T-Mobile USA device that many local "smartphone gurus" haven't even heard of, let alone "repairing" it.
3. The importer only has one such device in perfect condition (others have plenty of worn and torn), so exchanging is not possible...
I'm thinking of setting up an alternative solution for now...
More update on the issue: even on the China Unicom SIM that got recognized, it wouldn't connect to WCDMA/HSPA+ networks. Did an experiment: I used *#*#4636#*#* to adjust network modes, and when the device is on GSM only / GSM/WCDMA auto / WCDMA preferred, it would receive signal like normal; however, choosing WCDMA only, no signal is received. It seems like the real issue lies within the device after all...

If I understand correctly, the network mode menu option for WCDMA in the CM10 ROM is left over from the D2, which is a phone of similar spec which our developers based our ROM on. It doesn't do anything on the Relay.

But it DOES switch network modes... Or so I think, judging from the symptoms.
The first SIM only supports WCDMA(HSPA+), and when inserted, it can find my carrier's network but can't connect. On the second SIM which is compatible with both GSM/WCDMA, I lose signal only when "WCDMA only" is chosen, and under this situation the symptom is same as above. I assume that it can find my carrier's GSM network but not the WCDMA one.

First of all i am certainly no expert but this might help. From the way i understand it the sim is for LTE and you would have voice and 3G if no sim existed. When you unlocked it
you allowed the phone to go international. How ever if the sim card that is in the phone is a US sim it will not work out side US. Since you said that you are in Venezuela right now
and did not say where you purchased the phone can i assume that you might have a US sim in it. That being said pull the sim out and see if the phone will now give you 3G.
If it does then get a new sim from where you are.
it wouldnt be cdma at all, just gsm, and your data issue is likely all due to the APN settings. Sounds like youre international unlocked, which is good, but your apn settings are likely messed up. I see that you are rooted, but are you on the stock ROM?
still no solution for DATA on gsm device
