How to root Galaxy S 4g and strip down bloatware.. - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

My boss has asked me to root her GS4g...I've decided to take on the take (i've rooted my G2 and Sensation without any problems). However since It's not my phone I don't want to take the chance of any mistakes. Could you guys suggest the best most reliable information and tips on rooting the GS4g as well as the best and most reliable rom. Just want some experienced opinions on this. Her main goal is just to remove most of the crap that comes on it and strip it down a bit. I am sure speed would also make her happy but stable and reliable is her biggest concern.
Thanks for the help guys.

Root it with Superoneclick and use titanium backup app to remove bloat. Very easy and straightforward.

Just upgraged to a Nexus S

From a HTC Hero which I rooted and ran some awesome custom rom.
I'm wondering if there is any benefit of rooting the nexus s? Speed is already amazing.
I kind of miss the tinkering, but if there is no real benefit then I'm happy.
Root or not to root?

it depends what you want to obtain from the tinkering
most people do it to OC
i do it for the fun of doing it
so other do it to fix certain things
so it really depends on your needs
It dont think there is anything that needs to 'fixed' its super fast and stock android is android the way Google intended.
I'll have to lay my rooting to rest as I can't personally see any benefit.

Well,
The whole reason we root and hack is to make these devices better.
They're already some awesome kernels for the Nexus S. Not to mention the "root" apps that are in the market. Just having the ability to backup and restore my whole system, incluuding apps, is enough reason for me to root.
We strive for higher clock speeds and memory access speeds.
You have to have root if you want to do any major theming.
I can go on and on. But i digress. Just do it!

"Fancy" looking notification bars

I'm a noob (very). I am seeing alot of screenshots where people have really nice looking notification bars. I especially like the ones with the blue colored wifi, signal status and battery icons.
Are those from phones with custom roms? Can I get a theme from the market that will do that for me?
I am fully rooted but very new and feel I'm not ready to flash "stuff" yet...I paid $500 for our phone. I'm studying hard thought.
If anyone knows where I can download and an app that can make my notification bar look fancy I would greatly appreciate any info or links.
Thank you

What version of android are you running? 2.2?
Edit: Also what kind of phone do you have?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Not an app. A theme that you have to flash. Make sure its compatible with your current rom
Typed by Z using the Gingerbread keyboard.
I'm stock 2.2 froyo. Rooted. Bloat free. Fota fixed. Thats all. Very new but eager to learn

Thank you for your replies. I couldn't find anything on the market. The people in these forums seen to know where everything is.
I was hoping someone would attach a download. Lol. I'm not lazy just cautious. I don't want to find out things the expressive way.
Atleast this is helping me build up my ten posts so when I need serious help I'll be able to ask.

Well to the best of my knowledge you can't really tinker with your status bar until you have a custom rom and for the most options preferrably one based off of a Gingerbread (2.3 +) build. If you are already rooted then flashing roms is really safe. Do you have Clockwork Mod Recovery?

@pagan HTC Vision. I only asked if you were trolling my forum because after I posted "I'm stock 2.2 froyo. Rooted. Bloat free. Fota fixed. Thats all. Very eager to learn"
You asked me if I have ClockworkMod Recovery. I'm stock how can I have CWM?...maybe you didn't read before you replied. It happens...you also said flashing roms is really safe. So a noob (very) like can flash easily?
Its all good. Lol..
I spend most of my free time racing (at the helm) sailboats. J22's (with spinnaker) mainly.
However I'm a diletante who has recently discovered modifying android phones. I am intrigued. I Want to show people what people are doing. Their genius.. and show off MY phone. I want to be able to do a what you all are doing...
You have gingerbread 2.3 is that custom? Or can I buy it stock?
Thanks for your replies. For real.

Just because you're still running the stock rom doesn't preclude you from having clockwork mod recovery, when you rooted an app called "Superuser" should have been installed on your device. Also you may have an app called "Rom Manager" installed as well, if you don't have that one it's free in the market (and I highly suggest getting it, it is very necessary). Check to see if you have the rom manager app and let me know, if you don't, then download it from market and post back. I'll help you get clockwork mod recovery up and running, then we'll get you a basic understanding of all its functions. After that you can back up your device and get you a custom rom installed.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
@Jerry D - It looks like you have the Galaxy S 4G. If that is the phone you have, Clockwork is not quite ready for our phones. We do not have any custom rom's available at this time. So there is no way to change your notification bar.
@golmar88. Thanks for your reply. I have been reading or forum multiple times a day for a couple of weeks now and definitely up to date on our progress.
I'm that noob who is going to study and wait for something I can handle....
I saw rom manager on the market and thought wow this will be cool. I'll root and I'll have a "rom of the day". Lol.
I didn't know the work involved or the risk. After reading what is going on here I'm "hooked". I love learning new things and can't wait until I know a fraction of what some people on here know. I can't wait to flash my first rom.
Thanks again for all your help!

Hopefully we'll get some stuff before too long.

Let developers use their threads to update changelogs, for bugs to be reported, and for feedback or suggestions about their work.

how to change the imei?
i was wondering if you can change the imei from the infuse i did it once to the captivate for the reason the i did it is because i can stay with the unlimited data plan instead paying 25 for the 2 gb.
Why can't you keep you unlimited data? I upgraded and they let me keep it.
Ok new to the android scene. I am rooted currently and have been contemplating putting a new rom on particularly the new Infused. I put the modded 3e recovery file in the correct location by copy and paste but had to replace it (save original to another location on sd card) and dl the rom manager from market. Thats as far as I got. (got nervous) cuz got ?s. I have looked at the instructions that are given and the wipe and such kinda scares me. What is wiped. What about my contacts. My main concerns are my contacts the rest of my stuff is backed up on my comp. And what are chances of "bricking" phone beyond help, and can i go back.
that is basically what i would like to know.
I know there are risk with stuff like this but just like to have heads up.

As to anything there are risks, you can back up your contacts to your gmail account and your purchashed apps can be downloaded again after you install a new rom without buying them again. You can also us Titanium backup(search for it on here and how to properly use it). If you are to brick it Gtg made the "Ultimate Unbricker" which works and will get you back to stock. With anything its all about trial and error. Most people are capable of installing roms without issues if they read and do the instructions right.
Ok thanks not sure how to back up to gmail but guess can figure it out. I have titanium backup and did a a batch backup and saved the titanium folder to my desktop (no havent searched to see how to properly use it yet had done this before your reply) is that enough if not, off to search i go. Is there an approximate time i need to set aside to allow for the flashing. Im used to a 1 min jailbreak so want to make sure dont try it before head off to church in morn or something.

if youre going to rely on someone else to root your phone, just know that you will also have to rely on that same person/someone else if your phone ever starts to have problems or acts funny. its best to do the job yourself and take your time to READ EVERYTHING. it all may seem like useless information at first, but in the end itll save your butt. and you wont have to rely on someone else or start pointing fingers if something bad happens, only yourself
Quite a funny thread.
I think you're best of getting an iphone.

For the record don't assume this request comes from laziness. My success in life has been in part because I put no ego into knowing what I do well and what I do not and knowing where that line is. Also knowing when I should fix something in my home and when, for me, looking for a contractor would lead to a better result.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using xda premium
sounds like you don't need root anyway
The results I'm looking for are. To remove bloatware, move apps to the sd card that normally can't be moved, be rooted so I can use titanium to fully back up my phone.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using xda premium
Its not that difficult just try is scary at first but the stuff here on xda an the support you get are endless an they are rite its better you do this yourself so you know where you stand plus you will need adb setup on your computer before you even start you'll find that when you go to unlock the bootloader.I used the all in one tool box to get root an recovery look it up if it doesn't work then it just doesn't work there's very little risk in harming your device its really not that hard give it try

Rooting your phone is kind of like building your own computer, it's a good thing to do if you're willing to learn. Most of the process is learning how your phone works, and if you don't know how to root it, how are you going to fix it when something goes wrong. Listen to everyone's advice.
First off thanks you to all those that have taken their time so far to share their thoughts and advise. I'm getting the picture that what I'm looking for isn't how it works. I was hoping rooting could be approached like car ownership. Some owners like to fiddle under the hood, learn all the things that can be done. Others just are users, they only want to learn what is needed to operate the car as designed. The third type are those that are willing to open the hood but tinker with just those things that are simple, safe, and reversible. More then users, less then mechanics. I was hoping this last category was possible for my objectives in regards to rooting but it appears not from the postings so far.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using xda premium
Problem is that if you run into an issue a few months from now that stemmed from flashing something, chances are that person that helped may have moved on to another phone and you could be in the same boat trying to get someone to help, but it can be more severe and time urgent than it is now. I think the stickies in the general and dev forums r really good at educating and easy to follow.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk 2
Based on your requirements.. It seems you don't want to get your phone data lost. I'm mentioning this because the easiest process causes factory reset of the phone thus you will lose all app data and phone data. (but you want root to backup data right?)
If you don't want to lose the data but to achieve what you wanted.. The method will be kinda hard.. That is SOFF without htc-Dev... Guide Link is in my signature... The hardest part of this process is wire trick.. Which can't be done remotely.. Has to be done by you only.. Rest of the setup is breeze... So if you want I can help you through initial setup but as I said the wire trick has to be done by you.. Also the process takes repetition tries which might take up hours too
Sent from my HTC Sensation using xda premium
It took me literally minutes to s-off my sensation and to install a custom rom. OP just read the stickies and you'll be fine. Just remember when doing the wire trick;
Put wire in and say quickly "one two"
Quickly remove wire and quickly put it back in and quickly say "two two hundred" and you'll be s-off in seconds

To root or not to root ..

What are your reasons for rooting your HTC one ?
what does rooting offer to better the experience .. ?
Personally I used to root simply to off the ads, but it hit me that I barely have any since I usually get the adfree paid versions.
I really want to root but have no incentive to, convince me .
Still for the ads, I accidentally clicked many of them in the browser. Greenify is a good reason too.

root
of coz you should root if there is a safe and reliable method available.
the main advantage of rooting is you can save tons of battery life by installing customs roms that comes with less bloatware.run the phone full screen.louder sound.stronger cell and wifi signal.speedier and smoother system. best of all u get the latest andriod version, which i believe HTC had disgustingly discontinue the update for htc one. gets roms like pac man or jellybam which are more stable. cheers
