So I got a new phone today - T-Mobile LG G2x

So I was a near the tmo store troday and on a whim I decided to go in and get the SGS2 aaaannnndddd I dont think I am keeping it. The screen is bigger and the download speeds are great average of 12-15 mbps with bursts into the 30 mbps which is great but with my g2x I could tether all I wanted with this phone the tethering is blocked damit. Now I gotta pay another 15 a month to hell with that. I dont know maybee I will just keep it but I definitly am not jumping ship with the g2x I love my g2x and I will never get rid of it. I got this phone a few days after launch and it has kicked ass ever since. I hope it is not because they gave me a new sim card. In my g2x I was using an older sim card I think I am going to try this sim in my g2x now to see if they still do the same thing wiith the tethering. For anyone thinking of switching I would not unless you are going to do the same as me.

Thanks for the tethering info.

So I tried the sim in my g2x and the tethering worked fine. And the funny thing is now it works on my sgs2 I dont know its weird all I know is I pay $55+ for 10 gb of internet that should include tethering if you ask me. I am going to give this phone a chance foe a week and then see but like I said I will never get rid og my g2x it is my baby. I will never get rid of it. I even have a second one for spare parts! All hail the G2x

All of T-Mobile's new phones, starting with the Amaze 4G and SGSII (and including the new LG MyTouch phones) have been programmed to use a separate APN for all tethering. This APN is blocked without a tethering feature on your account.

Check your bill, phone T-Mobile, to determine if you're now being charged for tethering because you are now able to use it with your sgs2. Extra charge for tethering is a rip-off, it's double-dipping charges for the same data, because they aren't providing anything extra to enable use or additional costs for its use that would necessitate charging more.

Does a custom rom bypass this and get you the option for free? This is assuming the rom has the option in it.

Assuming you're using something other than the default tethering option (like the tethering in CM7), yes. If it's a rooted stock ROM using the same tethering framework, no.

tethering......busted....

Recieved a text from my wireless carrier stating that my tethering would be cut off or I can pay an additional $30 or so per month. I think it came down to me downloading the OS for an iphone 3gs I've been playing with. Last month I ended up with around 10gb of data usage.
Tried tethering after the deadline date and was directed to a site, stating I need to call customer service. I also tried using data on my phone at this point and was directed to the same site. Call customer service and was told to access their data I would need to give them my phones serial number. go figure.... after the past two years of playing with various phones, nexus one, vibrant, hd2, iphone 4, iphone 3gs, nexus s.... they want to know what Im using .....
Solution????
a different android phone again, with tethering.
or
drop my sim card into my iphone 3gs for a few hours and switch back to the mytouch 4g

Seeing as how you are getting the same site from the phone browser and the computer browser, it seems they just assume, not know you are tethering. The hold should go off after your billing month is up. If not, well do they know you have a smart phone, or are you using it on a feature phone plan? If it is the later, then giving them a smart phone serial will probably make them change your plan to a smart phone plan.
I heard if you use the stock tethering app they charge you... what if you use the one that's built into CM 7? isn't that the same as using android-wifi-teather? I was always unclear about that
Well I have been using mytouch 4g and were using the original tether option and now I'm using cm7.never have had any problems.

Well for lite usage you won't have problem. But if you are using bandwidth excessively they will notice it and based on using DPI/SPI techniques they can determine which service and protocol is being used. They would never want people to use free bandwidth when they can get people to pay money for same exact thing. Talk about milking the cow for all its worth lol.
Before the mytouch I had a hd7 and before that the first 4g I had was the g2..download were massive and big..never got caught...I was always using the stock T-Mobile tether option..I guess cus I'm on an old unlimited android web plan...

Yes I did milk it, downloading the os for the iphone probably did it, will wait till cycle is over and do basic tethering again. Im going to my iphone and switch back to see if that works as well.

Yes I do use the tethering hotpsot often for internet at home. I downloaded the app you recommend, will test it out for awhile to see if itll make a difference and still allow me to tether.
I'm having conflicting information put my way about tethering. Is T-Mobile charging for using the WiFi Tether feature in froyo, or are they charging for the Wired Tether feature.
I can't even get a straight answer from store reps or customer service. It's like they don't even know themselves.
Trying to basically find out if I need to go back to using barnacle.

I'm not with tmobile, I have been using android phones for over a year plus, starting with the nexus one. I have always been tethering and kept my data around 5-6gbs per month. Last month I hit the 11 or 12gb mark, and within the first week of the new month I was already up to 3.5gbs. Mainly from downloading the Iphone OS, and other tools I needed.
Over the past year, I never once was charged for tethering nor was I warned about it. You shouldn't need to worry about tethering with tmobile, if you hit the 5gb of data they will cut your speeds. I download the tethering app from the first page of this post, and it seems to be working fine as of now.

No more tethering on T-Mobile

I'm using the latest cm7 nightly and whenever I tether either over wifi or through USB on my x64 windows 7 machine, the internet dies after a couple minutes. Is anyone else having this issue?
I thought it might be an issue with the nightly build so I switched back to the stock rom and the internet tethering behaved exactly the same way. I also tried tethering to my laptop which is 32-bit windows 7. Because it didn't work on my laptop either, I think its either a hardware issue with my phone or T-Mobile is blocking the tether now.
I've also noticed that voip calling with the gingerbread sip client only works on wifi. I suspect that T-Mobile is starting to enforce some of their policies finally :/

T-mobile terms of service prohibits you to tether. Most people don't realize it but they can mess wit ur connection as they please if they find u using ur device in way that conflict with every user receiving equal service. Do u tether a lot and if u do way kind of activities do u do

Bottom line is my data is mine. regardless of what device i use it on.
Now i will say that i only tether to other Android devices (IE Tablets), but still....
Capped?
Sounds like you're being capped :/ T-mobile will cap your data if you're using too much of it.. I've heard this many times.. they cap after 5gb of data, or maybe its 10gb? I'm not really sure but that sounds like what's happening to you. Usually it will disconnect or kick you to EDGE to slow you down.. Sucksss

Not really. It may be that he hitting his cap but my friend just got tmobile and he can't tether either. I tried it out and it didn't work. I could connect but the internet wouldn't work and I know for a fact he didn't hit his cap. I just tried it and my tether works and I dont officially pay for it. I'm running royal panache. Hopefully they won't start enforcing this...

I know I'm not at my cap... I only used about 2/5 gb so far. And the 4g will work on my phone even after my tethering stops working.
I noticed that while tethering that Google Chrome says "resolving proxy" in the status bar. The connection works really well within the first minute of tethering and then gets slower and slower until it dies completely.
I have x86 and x64 windows 7 machines that both show the same symptoms when tethering. But when I boot into my x64 Ubuntu desktop the tether works indefinitely. I suppose that T-Mobile detects how windows handles its network and somehow disables the tether through proxys.

I can still tether too, but I don't use it to often though, only when I need to get something important while i'm out. But I've been tethering since I had my G1 and when I had my g1 i would tether my ps3 to to lighten the load on my wifi router. I dont do that anymore but I still like tether since I do pay around 30bux for 5GB unl, I want to make use of what i pay for. But i end up using around 2GBs per month anyway.
I don't tether much at all. I only have been browsing the internet with the tether because my cable DSL has been out for a week. But that's another story

I have had to tether a few times with my laptop and had no issues, I don't do it often either though but I've yet to recieve a notice stating other wise. I would think that since they provide network service by means of usb network cards it would depend on the amount of data used in a yearly quater which would force anyone to upgrade their service for obvious reasons. My brother travels on business alot and he had to switch service for the same reason, not because he was doing anything wrong but because there was a better service provided for that specific use. If your on a laptop all day get a network card other wise tethwring should be for simple tasks ans periodic use only.
Sorry, Newbie to tethering, So when you hit the 5gb cap tmobile will shut off/throttle the data services?
Does that apply even if i have the Old school Even More plan with unlimited data? I could understand how new or plan changes where the option for fully unlimited is not available but not so much for old school plans.
I also realize post merger I may be out of luck but one can hope.
It's still unlimited, the new plan starts throttling at 2GB instead of 5GB. You still have data, just at edge speeds.

He's right, if your using more than that you should be on another plan, 5gbs is alot for a phone no matter how you cut it, personally I can blow threw 5 in a day easily depending on what I'm up to obviously but anything over that should be on a USB wireless network card.
Example:
http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/phones/?shape=lcards
ive been capped a few times and got a text message from t-mobile saying if i tethered any more that i would be charged. they have a monthly fee for tethering and hot spotting. its something insane like 25 bux a month. thats only happened once though and ive tethered and h spotted since with no problems. its accumulative i assume and you have to switch back and forth from each style of web connecting. try it and see if it helps at all.

Android phones without data plan?

If I was to purchase a used g2x or g2 or even a sensation off Craigslist today, would it be worth it if I don't have a data plan and all I do have is txting and calling?

should i just stick with my iphone 3gs?
I would check first with your carrier to see if they will even let you activate a smart phone without a data plan. If so its really up to you. I have since upgraded to a HTC merge, but before that, and even now I have a touch pro 2 running android off the sd card. I can still use it on wifi even though its not activated. In your case you should be able to use most of the functions via wifi and text and minuets off your plan. Not a bad idea actually
I would check if your carrier would even allow you to activate a smart-phone without a data plan. Unfortunately, carriers in general will force you to have a data plan if you own a smart-phone.

Verizon Question about SIM and USB Broadband

Hi,
I'm looking for a decently definitive answer on this, I came from AT&T and had an ExpressCard modem where I could pop out the SIM from an iPhone and stick it in the Card (older data plan, could change APNs to the mobile wap etc). Anyway, this worked really well, and I didn't need to use it very often so I was never too concerned about them flagging for excess usage etc.
FastForward to now...I switched to Verizon, on the DC (obviously), and I just picked up a Pantech UML290 4G for dirt cheap, downloaded the drivers, popped out the SIM from the DC, fired it up and it appears to work perfectly. I'm on an unlimited data plan too.
So now for the big question of how risky is this really if it's not used frequently- I'm not going to replace my home internet or anything, just used it periodically when I need a better connection on my laptop without wifi (tethering has been flakey at best for me) I'm sure this technically violates the TOS, but I'm looking at this from a risk perspective of how likely am I to actually get flagged/caught etc if I don't have excessive data/usage etc.
Thanks!

Thank you for the reply- my thought with the card vs tethering was that my SIM was getting tied to a different ESN etc. Thank you for the reassurance though.
Verizon knows, but as long as you aren't using obscene amounts of data you will be fine.

Just canceled verizon service over this phone!

After having so so many issues with this phone and issues with my previous OG Droid i came to my wits end and dropped my service today after verizon refused to give me anything other than a Revolution or thunderbolt as a replacement!
Loving my Charge on Humble 4.22 with unlimited data. It can only get better when I move into Humble 5.0 or other EP4P ROM.
I really can't complain about this phone, although I'm sure I couldn't hang with stock.
Are you getting other service? In general, Verizon's network is superior. I'm sure that varies with location though.
i have my charge on humble and all i have to say is WOOOOOOOOOOOOOW.

I was running a custom rom also but the constant lack of data is unacceptable! i have tried EVERY rom, modem and combination out there! after having 8 of the other droids, and 3 of these i was told that i could swap to ANY other phone i wanted so i researched it and chose the bionic because it has higher ratings the rep then told me no not that phone anything but that, so i said ok let me do some research and i did and decided to go to the iPhone for the reason of apple has better support! and the rep said oh, sorry not that either.... ok so if i can have ANY phone what can i actually have? he replied thunderbolt or revolution... UH.... NO... So o can canceled my service and will sacrifice the poorer networks....
I kinda feel stuck as well. But I don't want to cancel my service.

The only issue you mention is "constant lack of data", which would seem to have nothing at all to do with the phone and a lot to do with the network. A Bionic doesn't have magic cell tower creation sauce in it. Neither does an iPh*ne. You say you've been through 11 phones over this, proving the phones aren't related, and proving that VZW has bent over backwards to please a whiney idiot. They've lost a pretty penny giving you phone after phone for something that has NOTHING to do with the hardware, because they actually care about whiners (most of us don't). Good luck finding another company that dedicated to keeping you around while they lose money on you.
If you KNOW of a better carrier in your area, from you know actually talking to real friends on other carriers in your area (if you haven't WAAHed them all away), then just switch to them. No need to post a gee tell me I'm right and a great martyr to strangers all over the world on a forum. Just switch.
Maybe you wanted to be Thomas Paine and start a revolution with all of us. Umm... too bad. Many of us get great service. Sorry yours sucks, but no need to post anywhere but a site dedicated to your local geographic area. Otherwise the info is pretty worthless to most of us.
Finally, THANK YOU, for finally leaving VZW. Your antics have contributed to driving up their overall costs (passed on to all of us eventually).
I dont see how you can complain when you were running custom roms.
Did you ever give the Charge a chance at a complete stock setup?

I to was fed up with data drop but it isnt a charge issue. It's a network issue of some sort and as far as the bionic goes let me tell you. You aint missing much. i like the service and coverage that verizon offers, i have 5 lines with them 2 in which i carry with me daily! im not a whiny customer however when my blackberry can stay connected to the network and send/receive calls, messages, data, ect. and my charge sitting right next to it cant i have a problem! the first month i had this phone i had no problems then things went down hill so i started experimenting with roms to see if any of them helped, some did, some didnt. i wasnt trying to get the next best phone as im not in contract on any of my lines and pay the retail prices to avoid a contract! i simply want a phone that i can use without hassle. as for being on my 11th+ phone how is it my fault when my CLR shows up with a broken screen, broken keyboard, not able to boot, factory resets its self every 45min, speakers not work, wifi not work, oh best yet how about when you open the box and they send you a used phone that hasnt been inspected or cleaned!?! my problem is that i need a phone that works and they arent able to send me one, i even agreed to go to a non 4G phone and was denied! So ill go over to att where i expect things not to work!
Humble 5.0 has made this phone good and I agree with others dont leave big red when you have unlimited. Tons of new devices to come.

Really not a good time to bail ... the latest EP4 leak is a big step up in modem performance (almost never drop data anymore -- If I do, it's for maybe 10 seconds).
EP4 will (supposedly) be released within the next few weeks OTA.
Plus this improved modem performance lets me use 2X Battery (similar to Juice Defender) to turn off data while the phone is not in use, yet turn it on every xx minutes to check email, etc.... resulting in a big battery savings. I could never do this with the previous leaks or when the phone was stock -- it would take FOREVER to pick up data each time I turned the screen on.

We are past Tuesday WTF? I'd call back and demand satisfaction!
Now it the wrong time to switch carriers. Unless you go to Sprint. Verizon's Unlimited Data on 4G @12mbs(av.) is something I would have tried to stay and deal with.
I understand your fustration. All I want is a phone that works and does what was promised. I tether and still have probs when playing Xbox live, or downloading torrents. Speedtest gets me 12mbs, but still have problems then it locks or freezes. So I know what you mean. I've tried ALL ROMS. I'm on Humble 5.0 right now, and I love it.
But all you need to do is restart, or turn off then on mobile data, and it works. It'll work for awhile. But there are still those problems that happen. Despite all that...I still Love Verizon. I've had no probs with cust serv or phone coverage. To me, the problem is bad, but not enough to make me EVER leave Verizon.
Luckily I won this phone and still have my new every two discount. So I will sell this phone for 200 and end up paying 50 for Galaxy Nexus. I hope that the problems with tethering and data freezing don't exist with the GN.
I've had them all. Treo on ATT, Samsung Flip Phone on Sprint then flashed to Cricket, G1 on T-Mobile, then Droid Eris and Charge on Verizon. VERIZON IS HANDS DOWN THE BEST!...Luckily I got unlimited data before it was gone. If you had that and let it go...I'm sorry, but I think you will look back and realize you mad a big mistake.

Sprint is having their own data problems right now. You guys are complaining about dropping data until you reboot. How about not having any data at all regardless of how many times you reboot. That's how bad Sprint is in some areas right now (northwest Indiana). If I try to go to the market sometimes the phone will sit there for literally five minutes and still won't connect. I get data time-outs and the spinning circle multiple times a day. Which is why I went back to Verizon on my hands & knees hoping their network has improved in the past couple of years.
Big red came through. They have very nice CS (well 95% nice) LOL. I got the Bionic just in time to sell it after I use my upgrade to get the nexus!!!! (The Bionic is a very good phone BTW) Verizon service hands down beats the rest. When it comes to the big red, you get what you pay for. That's the truth.
