My phone is a SGH-i896, Samsung Galaxy S Captivate from Rogers,
I am extremely frustrated. My phone isn't rooted. I recently found out my phone was available for a 2.2->2.3 update so I decided to do it.
I downloaded Kies and connected my phone to the computer. Kies picked it up and told me to initiate the update. I did. After a while it told me there was an "error" with the update and I'd have to do an emergency firmware repair... what the hell? I proceeded to do what it asked me to do an emergency repair, but even that failed and it told me to "try again later"...
So, I tried "again later" but this time instead of getting the digger android I when I initiated the recovery mode (Hold volume up+down and connect the USB) I get the "phone-!-computer" screen. Now I'm stuck like this.
I searched around and someone said if you hold volume up+down and then hold power, and then when you see the BSOD, and it flashes, release power and it should boot up in download mode... but when I attempt there it just flashes then goes back to the BSOD.
What are my options to fix the phone aside from going to a service center and most likely having to send it in for repair?
Kies broke my phone. Ugh.

In your case, try (from a powered-off state) holding Vol+/Vol-, and then plug in your USB cable. That should kick you to download mode. If you still get the phone--!--pc screen, just try flashing from there. As far as ODIN and other programs are concerned, that's download mode.

Doing this still shows the phone--!--pc screen... I've tried tons of combinations and fiddling around with it but nothing works it seems.

Just so we can give you clear directions, at the end of this, where do you want to be? On the stock rom, on a custom rom, Froyo, Gingerbread, etc? The steps to do those different things will vary what you need to do.
As a first step in all of those, though, you'll need to use either Heimdall or Odin to flash your phone, and you should have the Samsung drivers downloaded and installed (if you haven't already).
I want to be able to upgrade it to 2.3 more or less. If that's not possible, just to get my phone back in working condition... I'm close to calling Rogers to see what they can do if I can't figure this out on my own.
I guess I'll look up some information on Heimdall/Odin then about flashing (I really have limited knowledge in this area) - will doing any of this void my warranty?

I was hoping that would be your response. Go to this thread. TRusselo whipped up a bunch of Odin one-clicks to get you back to stock Rogers packages, one of which is called "2.3.3 Gingerbread WITH bootloaders" (you can CTRL+F for that exact phrase). That should get you back to a working state.
Just make sure you don't pull out the cable or lose power while you're using it. That would guarantee you'll end up having to send it back.
And technically, it will and won't void your warranty. Flashing anything but stock stuff directly from Rogers probably voids it, but if this works properly, it's going to look exactly the same as if they did it, so you should be fine.
Thanks jm, I'll give this a try and post my results
Good luck. Just make sure to read the directions very carefully - it should be pretty self-explanatory, but it's better to be as safe as possible.
All fixed following jmtheiss' instructions! Thanks plenty!
Glad to hear you are back up and running Vinhwut. And jmtheiss, you provided clear instructions to get him there. That's how help should be given.

This morning in my half-awake state I accidentally pressed "OK" to my phone asking me to go ahead with the (I'm guessing) 2.3.6 update. I KNEW I would end up doing something stupid like that. GRR!!
Anyway, the phone then launched itself into a white screen with blue text saying that it is doing the update, but nothing happens and it appears to be frozen.
I am rooted and was trying to avoid this update; like I said, I was half-awake.
I can't even get it to boot into download/recovery mode, it always goes straight to the white screen. Hopefully this isn't a double post; I checked here and google first but couldn't find anything for this phone. I'm really at a loss here. I have Titanium Backup and I got an external SD card, but I'm not sure if I actually backed up the apps to the external card (new to TB). I did a Kies contacts backup a few days ago so that at least is safe.
Is there any hope for my phone? If I can just get it back to a working state, I can live with my apps' data being erased. Any help appreciated.
Thank you!
Doh... sorry to hear that.. are you also running a custom rom, or customized ATT rom (I have the stock rom from the developers forums over the standard root after having tried a few custom roms).
I got the update message as well this morning, but I postponed it for 8 hours, however I am unable to get rid of the stupid notification, and am curious if after the 8 hours, it will force the update or let me postpone it agian (that will get annoying fast if I cannot disable the OTA update..)
I'd like to know how to cancel the update as well. I have it sitting in my notification bar. >_<

I'm still running stock 2.3.5. All I've had time to do is root and TB apps, haven't had the chance to play around with ROMs yet for this phone.
Yeah I postponed it for 8 hours, too. The 8hrs must have expired right as my alarm went off because the "Install this update?" message popped up and I hit it, thinking it was the snooze button -_-
Let me know if there's any way to get off of this screen my phone is stuck on! And then disable the obnoxious message for good.
Thanks again =)

I have about 10-15 times since it first happened this morning. I also tried taking out the SIM and microSD cards. It's the only way I can get it to stay off to try to boot to recovery mode (which it still won't boot into); if I hold the power button to turn it off it just resets back into the white Software Update Screen (won't stay off).
Has anyone successfully applied this update yet?
Any other ideas? I appreciate the feedback so far!
Similar thing happened to me. I pulled the battery and booted in to CWM just fine. Restored from there.

I don't believe I have CWM installed? How would I have known if I did? When I volume up + volume down + power and wait until the Samsung logo comes up it boots back to the white screen. Maybe I'm doing that process wrong?
Same thing happened to me this morning!
almost identical story
I've tried literally every combination to get to the reboot screen. ugh :'(

I haven't been rooting as much as some of the guys here, but I think if you take the battery out and it won't boot back even into recovery, you're hard-bricked and you're gonna have to start from scratch with a fresh stock rom. Go to download mode (turn off, hold vol up + down, insert powered usb cable) and put a stock rom back on using odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342348
You will basically get back to what your phone was when you took it out of the box and you'll have to install everything, your data (other than the data that is on a microSD card) won't be there.
If you have a backup that you did with CWM, then you can restore the backup after you do all this.
I think you got unlucky with the worst case scenario of what shouldn't happen during an update.
Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a try when I get home from work and will let you guys know how it goes.
For the future, is it generally recommended to de-root before doing any straight carrier update? Or is this just a total fluke that some of us are experiencing?
Will adb recognize your phone? If it does just adb reboot recovery

AMAZING!! Thank you so much! Not only is my phone up and working but the update has installed!
I learned the following:
-you pretty much need a pc (not a mac) to do all the downloads correctly. I used a friends.
-to get your phone into download mode when it's frozen from the update, you have to hold down either vol + AND vol - (or just vol -) as well as the power button, simultaneously hold down power and also simultaneously plug in the usb. Then let go of the power button and remain holding down one or the two volume buttons.
THIS WAS JUST WITH MY SKYROCKET EXPERIENCE
I'm so happy. Thank you LucidMike
This just happened to my friend's phone. White screen no matter what. Stock everything, too. She's pretty bummed that there's no way to recover the videos and pictures on her phone before resetting it. Apparently she went to AT&T and they couldn't figure it out. They called tech support for her and THEY couldn't figure it out. She's currently on the phone with Samsung, but I doubt they'll be able to help either.

AHHH!! Tell her to hang up the phone right now!! Use this method to fix her phone!! All of her data will still be there after it's done! After the process is complete, back it up to a computer (enable USB storage and just copy + paste and I used Kies to copy my contacts) and THEN do a full factory reset (reset recommended by everyone to ensure smooth function of phone). The method in the link will return her to the original stock version; I believe it may trip a counter that AT&T can use to determine if you've hacked your phone, but if you want a working phone...and there's also a chance that it WON'T trip the counter (some people say it did and some say it hasn't).
EDIT: Pictures and videos that I took with the phone are saved in /sdcard/DCIM/Camera, so you know where to copy her stuff from.

I'm trying to fix my boyfriend's phone (he actually didn't hack/root it or anything...but yesterday's update messed up his phone so it was stuck in the "SOFTWARE UPDATE" and "Loading..." frozen white screen). We tried taking out the battery, restarting it, everything. I tried your method of holding all three buttons while plugging in the USB and then letting go of the power button. What do you press when it asks you if you want to continue (up vol +) or cancel (vol -)? I chose vol -, and when it took me back to the white screen, I did it again and pressed vol +. Now I'm on a ODIN MODE page...will this affect his warranty or anything? What do I do next?

Thanks! I read on the first page of the thread that it needs to be rooted though? This phone is brand new and never been rooted or hacked...will doing this void the warranty or anything unpleasant? (I'm the one that likes hacking my devices like my Nook Color...my boyfriend is a little more paranoid and would rather have it stay covered under warranty )
No actually. Thats incorrect..the stock tar. Is just as it sounds. The stock firmware the phone comes with.....dont need to be rooted to use odin. Actually if u odn the stock tar. It removes root.

Well, Ive been flashing roms for a while now and I have an issue with my captivate.
Lets start in the beginning. I had my captivate on THS ICS rom and It was going great. But my captivate isn't that great anymore. The power button is broken, but I was able to go around that. (Sidenote: It turns on when I plug in the battery.) Anyway, I wanted to go back to stock because I did have the right bootloaders. (I couldnt get into download mode with the button combination. I thought it was the bootloaders fault. Im I wrong?) I wanted to switch to I9000 bootloaders but I had to start fresh. But before all that, I noticed that while I was on ICS rom, I was unable to go to download mode. I used to before, but it magically disappeared (I know it didnt, I know I did something to it but I don't quite remember when it happened.) So I was unable to flash a new rom, if I wanted to.
A couple of days ago, I bought a jig and it worked! It took me straight to download mode. So I decided to get my Captivate and make it go back to stock. So I opened Odin, it found my Cappy and I clicked start. But, it stopped at factoryfs.rfs. I waited a half hour and nothing. So I unplugged it and now it won't turn on. But it can still go into Download Mode and be seen by Odin but it just wont finish. I tried both odin one click and the regular odin. I looked everywhere for more than six hours and nothing came up. Please guys, if anyone knows what I can do to fix it, please reply.
I might have missed something, but just ask if you need any more info. Please help me.
Edit: I forgot to add this:
While I was on the ICS rom, I switched over to CM7 to see if the process of going back to stock would be easier. Thats when I tried to flash stock. It didnt work as well as I thought it would.
And I knew that I didnt have I9000 bootloaders because I installed the Icy Glitch kernel and each time I tried to have DIDDLE on it would go to deep sleep mode and I was unable to wake it back up.
As long as you can get to download mode you are fine. Try flashing a different stock from. Or using Hiemdell
I've tried both odin and Hiemdell. But with Hiemdell, it would always tell me that I dont have the drivers installed. So, it installs it for me. Even with the drivers installed, it keeps telling me that I dont have the proper drivers installed.
I have had this exact problem, where a bricked captivate can get into download mode but when restored to stock through a one-click, it freezes on the factoryfs.rfs. However, in my case after freezing at this stage, the phone was completely inoperable, and could not even enter download mode, so I am suprised yours could.
What works for me is to remove the battery, wait for a few seconds, put the battery back in, use the usb jig to enter download mode, and then WITHOUT the phone plugged into the pc, download and open this one-click file http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989.
Once the odin one click is open, plug the usb cable into the pc, and then into the phone. This one-click has never failed me. Hope this helps.
Ok, now it passed. I don't know what I did but now its back up and running. But now it boots up into recovery. I can't select anything because my phone's power button is broken. What do I do?

Depending on the CWM recovery you're in, you can sometimes use the search capacitive key to do the same thing as the power button will do.
I had the same problem you had with Odin stopping on flashing a file, turns out I was using a third party USB cable. I switched to the USB cable provided by Samsung when I bought my cappy and problem solved. Hope that helps.

Finally!
Well, I got my Cappy up and running again. While I was stuck in the CWM I just decided to install Gingerbread using a One click and it worked. Now I'm back to CM9. Thanks guys for the suggestions. I guess I just needed to wait and double check everything.
How do I unbrick a Samsung Conquer? Model SPH-D600, FE16 stock firmware, unmodified. I was unsuccessful obtaining root with Super One Click or the root exploit for Evo 4G which purportedly works (SPH-D710.FE16_CL579416_ROOTED-oc-sfx.exe). My phone worked fine after trying these 2 methods, but the root would never take.
Next I tried the Odin method from the files upped to this thread: [ROM] Custom Stock Samsung Conquer 4G FC17 Rooted With Tweaks
I downloaded both .rar archives to extract valid files. I followed the instructions in the included text file, puting my phone in download mode, loading the 2 files in Odin, and pressing the start button (easy, right?). After letting Odin run for several minutes, it hung on step 5/8, and the Odin program closed, but my phone remained in download mode. I couldn't get my phone to respond to any keys, so my only choice was to remove the battery. Now the phone will not power on. No bootloader, no response at all. Please help!

I can't get anything to show on the screen at all. No lights come on or anything.
Can you get into clockworkmod?
By holding up volume key + menu key + power key.
If yes, when you get into clockworkmod wipe data cache and do a factory reset.
Then power down or switch your mobile and then enter into download mode and use odin to flash your desired GB Rom.
Hope this solves your problem.
Once I realized it was't even responding to the charger, I knew it must be dead. I tried several button combos, and I spoke with my carrier's tech support who suggested other methods. This phone is hard-bricked with a capital B. I'm just have to deal with getting a new phone. At least the Credo people are pretty nice about discounts.

My samsung screen loads then the warning a custom os can cause critical problems in phone are. is it bricked oh no!
The issue with my phone.
I can't get into Download mode, computer won't pick it up and non of the buttons work. So I can't just flash a new rom.
It happened when I was trying to install This(I was being stupid and didn't look at the device.) So is there a way to fix it?
Things I tried and have
I have tried ADB, and fast boot they all get stuck waiting for the device (on every port).
I have the laf file. BUT here is the main issue my computer won't pick it up rendering the laf file useless.
I have looked on the forums and all methods purposed. Were for 32 bit computers or didn't work.
Signs of Life (Update One)
It just showed signs of life. It was dead so I charged it and the LED was flashing red and it charged now it is back to black screen and now sign of life though. I tried ADB on my tablet (didn't work) so I know the ADB issue might be my computer. That is good news because it means there is a chance of fixing it.
I am going to try to use ADB on my other computer to see if that works. If it does then there may be a chance of fixing it.

I looked into the zip that you tried to flash, and it looks like it flashed the mmcblk0p5 partition, which on the G3 is aboot (and I believe is why even download mode is broken). You can get a clean aboot.img from the thread here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-lg-g3/development/rom-lg-d850-20f-lollipop-5-0-1-extras-t3052041) , but you will have to have some way to flash it. Are you able to get into anything at all on the phone itself, recovery even?
@southern87 : maybe you can provide some insight. I remember in the Lounge a while back you had a broken aboot. Where you ever able to get back to download mode or some other way to repair aboot?

Thanks for responding. I am going to try ADB again but I can't get into recovery mode at the time being.
A similar thing just happened to me, except I got right out of it. Device was completely unresponsive, no download mode, adb nothing, indicative of a hard brick. Scared the **** out of me as I've had it less than 6 hours... Started holding buttons, and it came to life after ~1 minute of power button + volume down. Related? Well maybe not, thought I'd post it here. (TWRP 2.8.5 + Rooted CM12)

They don't put it bAck to stock.. They either will tell you no as you voided warranty or it will be sent off for warranty. They don't flash in store.
You have to have download mode to flash.
So your plugging your phone inTo a non USB 3.0 plug using the OEM LG cable while holding volup and then plugging in the USB cable?

Yes, AT&T said they would replace it for $199.00. Screw that. they gave me the phone # for LG, I will call them & see how much they charge to reinstall the OS. Yes, plugging into 2.0 usb while holding vol up with phone off. No sign of life.

Yes, if only it was that easy.
There are a few things you can try :
1.) Press the Powerbutton for a longer time
If you have a responce like the LG Logo or something like that, you might want to try and plug it to the computer and use the managing software
with which you can emergency reinstall the firmware.
2.) Press Power + Volume Down
If it restarts into the recovery menu, try to find a way to load a flashable stock rom of your handy onto the memory of your phone in order to "reflash" it.
(I don't know how you can do that )
3.) Go to the shop where you bought it and explain your problem, since rooting a LG device is not really easy to detect the chances that your warranty will cover for it are pretty high.

I have a conundrum. I bought an international S10e so I could root and run custom ROMs, even though I live in the US. While flashing with Heimdall, my USB controller flaked out and the flash failed hard. It left the phone in such a corrupted state, that it no longer will go into download mode or boot into recovery. When connecting it to a computer, it just goes to a teal screen that says the following:
An error has occurred while updating the device software. Use the Emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch PC software.

I installed Windows, the drivers, and the Smart Switch software, but the program refuses to see my S10e as a valid device for emergency recovery or otherwise. I took it to a shop to see if they could perform the reset, and they told me that Samsung US refuses to give them the necessary files due to it being an international model.
Are there any other tools I can use to perform this reset, or do I have to mail it in to Samsung?
it will go back into download mode again!

I have tried all that many times. The phone will not go into download mode. Unless there is a way to perform the reset that it suggests without download mode, it is dead and I will have to mail it in to Samsung and fight with them about it. Are there really no consumer-available tools that can do this?
same screen

I'm afraid not. Got a shiny brick on my desk, waiting in vain for some kind of low-level flashing procedure to recover it. At this point, its looking like it won't amount to much more than e-waste

I would gladly buy this off you if you don't fix it. Feel free to send me a pm as I'm never on here.
It's just soft bricked lol. I've been at this exact screen myself (S10e exynos). Just download Odin, Samsung USB drivers and stock ROM. Connect phone to PC, and Odin should detect it right away if I remember correctly. If not, hold power + volume down until the phone shuts off, then quickly plug it in while holding bixby + volume down. Try messing with it until Odin detects it and then just flash stock. I can assure you, it's fixable, nothing serious.
