[Q] Cant update 2.3.4 OTA - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, Ive been a lurker for a while, didnt really need to be a member since I found answers to all of my questions most of the time. But now I must say I am a little stumped. I have a Google Nexus S from WIND Mobile, I believe it is the i9020xxKD, I am currently on the 2.3.4 Gingerbread version, and I have rooted the phone with Mr. Superuser. Everytime I try to update to 2.3.6 OTA, I get the 10 sec before reboot and install, but once it reboots it does not install, instead it freezes with showing a Yield Sign with the android dood inside beside an exclamation mark. I have to remove the battery to get it to restart. Now Im assuming it has to do with me rooting the phone, and thats why it doesnt work. So is it worth to update to 2.3.7, or should I just wait for the Ice Cream thing to come out in December and get that?

I think as long as you have the stock ROM and kernel , Your fine.
I rooted my stock 2.3.4 and installed SU and it updated to 2.3.6 without any problems,
You'll just lose root and recovery.

Im still kind of lost with the stock rom and kernal stuff. How can I install them, I get to the recovery menu but nothing happens when I try to install anything.

bro , just wait for few weeks , and then directly update it to 4.0 ...
-------------------
download a 2.3.6 STOCK ROM , and then flash it via recovery , reboot, you are having 2.3.6 then ..
how to :
go recovery --> wipe --> first and third --> back to main menu --> install from zip --> select zip file you download (which has to be put in SDCARD) --> yes , flash it ---> reboot ---> android 2.3.6

Yea Ill just wait till 4.0 ^_^

How to go back to stock rom?

I've been using CM7 on my Unlocked i9023 Nexus S for the last 2 months but for some reason it keeps rebooting once in 3-5 days for no aparent reason.
I've seen that ICS officially started rolling out for my phone model yesterday. Do I have to revert to stock rom before upgrading to ICS? How do I do that?
Incase I don't have to roll back, how would I install ICS?
Turning this thread into a place for other people who have a custom rom installed and no clue about how to install anything else would be mighty helpful...

mmm well i expect u know how to Flash ... as u already have installed CM7 b4 ... just install Rom manager and go to download Rom and go to the last one and download stock ICS or install the 2.3.3 update =] then install update as follows it might take a few days for it to get pushed to ur device
I actually have no memory of how I installed CM7 because I used some guide. It's like driving with a GPS; it gets you to places but when you try to get there again, you have no idea how you drove there in the first place. :/
ok so heres what you do if you want to get to the official ics 4.0.3
1.open rom manager and find download roms from there go down to stock roms.
2. find 2.3.3 and download it
3.when its done choose the last 2 boxes when prompted.
4. phone will flash back to 2.3.3
5 skip the setup and connect to wifi and go to menu settings about phone software updates
6.it will download the stock 2.3.6 which has to be flashed so flash that
7.rename ur ics file i assume u have to update.zip (if u name it update.zip it will show up as update.zip.zip so just name it update)
8 ok now 2.3.6 is up and runnig plug in and transfer the update to the root of ur sd card
9. unplug and power down
10. volume up and power to enter bootloader. choose recovery and push power
11. triangle with android so push volume up and power to enter stock recovery
12. install update.zip find it and push power
13. enjoy ics

[Q] Return to Stock for Nexus S

Hello there.
I would like to ask for your good help restoring my Nexus S. I'm actually really exhausted looking for answers and tried downloading programs (e.g. One Click Stock) already. I wouldn't try to poke you guys if I hadn't reached dead end. Painstakingly exhausted for the last 3 days plus the slow connection we have here.
Using One Click Stock by Michael Peerman, I'm stuck without a signal since it says that I'm on Sprint. Everything works except that I'm always without signal.
My phone is under Globe Telecommunications Philippines. Build Number GRJ22. Currently it is in Gingerbread 2.3.4.
I won't bother rooting it again. I just want a simple droid without the extra benefits of a rooted phone.
Any help pointing me to the right direction would be really appreciated.
just flash a stock rom! and that would make a stock nexus s! and if you want even more you can lock the bootloader again!! and about the signal try flashing another radio!

It's only the ICS rom the one fot t-mobile. The GB one is for everybody
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommana...s&name=Stock Images&deviceName=Google Nexus S
Hello There.
Thanks for the hot tip. I got it all back to stock.
I did was root the phone again,
installed ClockworkMod. > Mount USB to PC > on the clockworkmod folder I created new folder "backup". Then paste the Stock Rom.
Reboot to Recovery then install from zip.
Voila! It worked.
Very much thanks to everyone.
Stock is different baseband version
I had recently flashed an ICS rom and could not get my mobile data working after trying every single radio for my model I9020A.
So I used rom manger to download 2.3.3 stock GB as described in this thread. Now it is showing I have baseband version I9020XXXB1 and when I go to system updates it says my system is up to date. How do I update to newest version of GB and show the correct baseband version of my phone?

[Q] ICS_SMOOTHIE not working for me

Hello everyone, just got my skyrocket gs2 (from ios4s) and longstory short,
i was told (by att rep) this phone did ICS....
so now i know it doest for now.......so i decided to root(ok so far) and
all that jazz......
im up to the point where i drop in the rom on extcard to install.
The problem im having is that the ROM im trying to run is
ICS_SMOOTHIE
and its not working properly. When i install (about 5 tries already) all goes good till reboot. I reboot, phone "sammy text" appears 3-6 xs, then eventually i get the ICS intro with all the colors and 1sec after it appears, it freezes and theres like a "Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" sound like a turbine engine like if phone was gonna blow up.
My ? is, whats going wrong? i followed the guide to the letter and did every step(as far as clearin cache etc) multiple times.
if this rom is bad (i also downloaded twice) then are there more ICS roms
out there that r good?
Thanks in advanced.

Hmmm you did install the ICS leak first, correct?... if anything don't do darkside wipe and only clear cache and dalvik cache. Flash zip from sdcard and do factory reset then reboot.

OK I see your problem. Looks like the rooting guide you followed is for GB (GB is gingerbread OS) which is before ICS. And let me get you the right guide... u need to flash this first http://rootzwiki.com/topic/23105-i727ucld2/ and that is becuz the rom itself doesn't have what is called the "radio" or "modem" for it to work properly so u need to flash the ics leak that came out first and then you have to flash CWM TOUCH recovery with Odin and root... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24085665 rooting guide for ics: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24050465

Is there any ONE guide that 100% will get ICS on my phone that you guys know of for Skyrocket SGH-I727???
right now i used ODIN to restore to full stock.
im ready to go and start fresh
any ideas?

Firstly, man, the devs will kill you if you say they are just skins and not full ROMS..LOL...!
The step above in your post: You should not skip that step if you are coming from Gingerbread.
You flash the leaked ICS modem first thing.
Then you wipe data etc.......although the modem is onboard the ROM.
see mhx's Full Bloat ICS here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1570498 FOLLOW THE STEPS AND LINKS FOR MODEM, KERNEL AND ROM in that post.
I have this running on my phone full time. I think that is that absolute safest for any newbie. Once you have ICS STOCK running, then you know you are good.
LMAO at all of you.
Thanks for all you guys help. i gave up and returned the phone lol, got a iphone 4s.......................( booooooooooooooooo ) lol
BUT, my quick question here (before i get stoned ) is lol, can i use these ICS "roms" on my galaxy tab? (im still a supporter) lol...
overall, i have samsung galaxy tab 8.9 and 7.1 and im wondering if i can use the tools you guys have provided on those 2 devices or if i have to go look for specific mods/upgrades for those devices seperately?
lol, thanks in advanced

[GUIDE] How to get v21y over the air on G2x

UPDATE 6-15-2012: i just wanted to update the beginning of this post to make it a little clearer, the original text is below
to get the v21y base band on your phone over the air, you have to go back to stock
to do this you need a stock rom, either your own backup or the one from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1248644 (the first and second link is a stock 2.3.3 nandroid which is a zip you extract on your pc and run flash.bat from inside that folder)
if you need the drivers, download the third link.
follow the steps in that thread, it works
if you have your own stock nandroid, just boot into ClockworkMod Recovery and restore it (after you backup whats on your phone now)
then reboot your phone
after restoring either your stock nandroid or the one from the post above, shut your phone off and remove the battery and use NVFlash to restore the stock recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
reboot your phone
now that you have your phone like it was from the beginning you can go to System Settings/About Phone and click on Software Update. this should pull down the updated Gingerbread version 2.3.4 and the new baseband v21y. IT WILL OVERWRITE YOUR PHONE AND WILL BE PLAIN STOCK
it takes a few minutes so be patient
once it is done and it rebooted your phone you will have to put ClockworkMod Recovery back on it using NVFlash. then you can flash other roms to your phone
please keep in mind that there is a bluetooth issue with both GB and ICS roms on this baseband and that only a few roms actually support v21y. Owain has written an update file that you flash to get support on any rom with v21y, supposedly it does work on any rom (GB or ICS) but i have not tested it, so read up and test if you want.
as of CM7 RC3 all CM7 builds support v21y
please thank the owners of the threads linked above, their methods worked flawlessly for me and i hope they work for you as well. this was a very easy way for me to get the new baseband. good luck!
original post------------------------------------------------------------------------
i was having a heck of a time trying to get the new baseband installed on my phone. i had all the stuff downloaded and all the instructions ready, had the KDZ file, the LG tool, everything...but i could not get anything to work
so what did work?
well using CWM Recovery i restored my stock backup i had made when i first got the phone (best to save this off the phone as well in a safe place) and then using NVFlash i put the stock recovery back on it
once that was done and i was booted back into stock you can go into the About Phone and choose Software Update (or whatever its called) and check for an update. it found one and proceeded to download a 30meg file. asked if i wanted to apply the update, installed it, and rebooted into a nice shiny new 2.3.4 GB setup with v21y and the new baseband installed!
the CM7 nightly build (June 3) is working great. getting ready to try a couple of others (Buru, EB, Genesis (although i was having a problem there, see that thread))
so its only been one day on it but so far calls are good, gps lock is fast, overall loving my phone even more than before!!
Great that the OTA worked for you, I left my phone stock the whole week it was mentioned about sending it and I checked the software update and it always told me the software update check failed/timed out lol
Sent from my LG-P999
I am extremely pleased with the update.
I had been running a rooted stock ROM + CWM Recovery. I had been dismissing the update notice for weeks now. Finally, earlier this week I flashed back the stock recovery and let the OTA proceed.
Current uptime: 67:59:06
I haven't gone a full day without either a random reboot or a sleep of death in a LONG time.
Did mine the other way not over the air. Then did the sound update. Also running CM7 and all has been fine.

A little clarification, if I may...
Could I just flash the stock 2.3.3 nandroid from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048274 to bring myself back to "stock" then, using NVFlash that's already on my computer from when I first rooted my phone, flash it back to stock recovery? After that, try the OTA to get myself to 2.3.4 or, if that doesn't work, use the LG Updater tool? Then just root my phone again and go back to enjoying custom ROMs?
Seems like it would be easier and one step less if I get the nandroid from that thread rather than following the link in the OP and having to extract something on my computer.

yes that will work as well and whether you get a stock rom from the link i posted or the one you posted makes no difference this was just how i did it
Hey, thanks! I've been wanting to update my BB ever since it became compatible with the new ROMs, just haven't been able to set aside the time to be able to do that. Just wanted to make sure I had it right before I attempted.
Your steps sounded easy and straight forward; it just never hurts makes sure!

you're welcome
there is a bluetooth issue with all roms and the new BB so if you use BT you might want to stick with the stock 2.3.4 that you will get with the upgrade. lots of devs are working on that issue so hopefully it wont be long
suggestions?
I followed the instructions in the first post, and now am back on the stock rom (21e, july 15 2011). However, when I go to try the software update, I get the following message: "current version is the latest version." Is there another way to get the new 21y baseband?

Stuck on "Warning Triangle" screen after Jelly Bean update instlals

Hi all,
I've got a euro GSM nexus s and I recently erased and re-flashed the official stock ICS over, as expected after a few minutes it decided it wanted to install the jelly bean update so I let it download, verify and then reboot the phone to install.
It showed the "unpacking" screen with the box with the arrow coming out of it and the progress bar. When the progress bar got to the end it changed to the warning screen with a triangle with an exclamation mark inside it and a little android below the triangle. It has been stuck on this screen for about 25 minutes now and I'm too scared to pull the battery because I don't want to kill the phone mid-update.
Does anyone know what this screen means or what it means for the update? Has anyone had a similar problem? Is there any way to get around this? Should I just pull the battery and see what happens?
Thanks for your time,
carkey
P.S. Here is a photo of the phone with that "warning triangle" screen:
dropbox dot com /s/6uoyyqslox6s74w/IMG_20120829_233306.jpg
EDIT: I can't post outside links yet so just go to dropbox and then the "/s/..." etc.
Thanks.
EDIT 2: I eventually breathed deeply and pulled the battery, after doing so it booted back on but into ICS and now says "Your system is currently up to date" so it seems the progress bar part of the update didn't actually do the whole update and then the warning triangle bit was what was making the whole updating process stuck.
Anyone know what the warning triangle screen is for or a way around this? Is there a jelly bean rom I can flash so I can actually have a working copy of JB?
Thanks again.

Why don't you flash custom rom? The stock rom is a bit slow to be honest.
Sent from my Nexus S using xda app-developers app
The main reason is because it is my girlfriend's phone and she pretty much wants stock. If there is a pretty much stock-looking JB custom rom then I'd definitely go for that but I don't know enough about customs, the only one I know is cyanogenmod and that definitely doesn't look like stock.
Can you recommend a stock-looking JB custom rom? Or even a way of getting stock JB on without putting ICS on and then doing the update?
Thanks again for all the replies,
Carkey

Can you recommend a stock-looking JB custom rom? Or even a way of getting stock JB on without putting ICS on and then doing the update?
Thanks again for all the replies,
Carkey

What zip file did i flashed for stock ROM??
If you flashed real, pure stock(odexed), plz follow this..:
If euro version is i9023,(I don't know exact version..)
http://www.randomphantasmagoria.com/firmware/nexus-s/i9023/
This site might help you.
Download JRO03E from IMM76D(if you are stock rom and version is IMM76D)
Do wipe cache/dalvik cache and flash it via cwm6.0.1.0
(If you didn't modified system partition!!Just adding more system apps is ok, e.g Rooting)
Just hitting thanks button will be great

Cool thanks for the information!
I'm going to try this tonight, is there a chance she'll lost personal data? As in, will she have to go through the setup process again like it's a new phone? We had to do this for flashing ICS?
Also, is this much different than doing the update from inside Android as in when it comes up with "New firmware/software availavble [whatever it says]"? Is there any chance it will get stuck on the warning triangle again?
Thanks,
carkey
