Honeycomb may be coming for Gtablet

Hey All,
I just got off the phone with VS support ((310) 228-4000) and i was informed that they had a big meeting with the techs and Nvidia yesterday about honeycomb for Gtablet. The rep said that it is coming but not sure what the date is. So that is some good news. I am suppose to get a call back from her either today or tomorrow with a def answer about honeycomb. Also the update servers are going online today or tomorrow according to her and the latest update is 3588.
I also recieved and email from Nvidia and they are looking in to the issue as well.
this is Bruce's response:
Hi – we’re still looking into this, sorry for the delay.

Sorry forget to add one thing.. If many people call in to this they might push the release date closer and may release it sooner.

Interesting, given that nVidia has stated they will not put Honeycomb on anything less than Ventana.
While I appreciate your willingness to push this, I still don't see NV helping out. To VS the Gtab is dead, why do they care about pushing NV for HC?
Well, keep in mind. nVidia said they would not be officially supporting HC on Harmony. They then later said that it was up to the Manufacturer. If Viewsonic really told him GTablet will get Honeycomb, I wonder if this means that nVidia will be releasing the driver source to the OEMs to support as they see fit? It's also possible that the Ventana drivers will work on Honeycomb with some modifications, since it sounds like the only difference is in the ancillary components on the board, not the chip itself.
Cautiously optimistic. Until I see a ROM I'm not going to hold my breath.

Not sure.. It was a shocking news to me as well when the rep Her name is SUE told me that they had a big meeting yesterday about releasing honeycomb for Gtablet and she also mentioned that they were in conference calls with nvidia about it. She said that she doesn't have the full story but she took my number and name and said that if i cant get you this info by today one her engineers will call me tomorrow with the info.
Lets see what happens.

Has there not already been drivers written for Ventana/Honeycomb by nVidia? I guess there has been they just haven't been released to the wild yet?
I too am cautiously optimistic about this...
I would not trust anything that their new CS department says, yet - I have my reasons for that. But I hope I am wrong.
The Nvidia dev forum posted an update yesterday stating that they will stop developing an OS (ie the rom) based on the prior generation tegra 2.
They completely acknowledge the fact that the kernel sources will be provided.
---
Mar 16 2011 at 12:07 AM #1 .NVIDIA is only supporting the Ventana platform for android releases going forward. At the moment we have released Froyo and Gingerbread OS images for Ventana and will release Honeycomb after Google has done so.
UPDATE 12 APRIL 2011:
Sorry folks looks like I caused a bit of confusion. Since this is a developer forum my comments
were targeted at Tegra Honeycomb developers and for this we’d like to focus on Ventana. For shipping or production products, customers should contact the device makers directly for OS support plans. They are responsible for the OS shipping on their device.
In relation to our linux kernel git repository, NVIDIA will continue to provide full open-source support for all of our kernel components and will push more of that upstream over time.

But nvidia never develops these roms in the first place, right? they just develop the chipset and drivers?
What does it mean for us that the kernel sources will be provided. Does that mean we'll be able to port Gingerbread and/or honeycomb with hardware acceleration?

I suspect they develop ROMs for their development hardware. However if what they meant is that they won't be developing any new development hardware ROMs, but will continue to provide driver kernel support to manufacturers, they really screwed up how they worded it.
Indistinctly this sounds like really f***ing good news!!!
sorry for the wording, but Im happy again (I bought mean a week ago)

Still waiting for a call back.... ... .. .
we MIGHT have actually started something here folks. 1000 whispers = a scream.
Hopefully this is true. I'm not holding my breath though.
From Viewsonic's Twiiter:
Folks- we can't comment on future OS updates to our tablets- too many variables. We'll let you know if updates are available.
16 minutes ago via CoTweet
I guess we'll wait and hope
This is entirely, my opinion.
I consider both good and bad news about Honeycomb and the future updates to the drivers for Harmony all rumors until there's a clear cut answer. Both responses from Viewsonic and Nvidia are not facts since they both seem to be flip flopping their answers.
I consider myself a positive person so I will remain that way while others may not share the same stance. The only thing that both negative and positive people may have in common is that all of our posts are assumptions at this point.

How long untill mango?

Simple question I hope
How far is mango off coming to factory unlocked handsets. I am assuming these don't have to wait for the usual carrier messing around and was the reason I went for on of these. I am also in the UK if this makes a difference because of region.
Thanks

Nothing official yet, although there was one MS exec that stated October. I would say thats a pretty good bet. Although MS may try to push it out in Sept. due to a new iPhone coming out and iOS 5 being released. In fact, I not only hope they are doing so, I would almost bet on it. Here's to hoping they can push it out a bit quicker.
waiting desperately for it!! it would be fun!!!
It will go out to networks late summer, and be distributed to the end user in the fall - unless there is some delay.
It will probably be released on nokia handsets in early September, then released to the rest in October.
A beta version of Mango will become available to registered AppHub developers sometime next week. The finished version is expected to arrive around the first anniversary of the original WP7 launch.

Where'd you get that information?
There was a rumor early this week about the Mango Beta dropping on Wednesday or Thursday but it was dissmissed by Brandon Watson and it turned out to be false.
I think people are just inferring the "next week" time frame based on the wording of Brandon's tweet, when he said that nothing would be happening "this week".

From here:
Neowin said:
This week has been a rollercoaster ride for Microsoft with Windows Phone 7. Firstly, the company distributed limited devices to the press for review, then Neowin uncovered news that the Mango beta was due this week. Today, we have uncovered news on why the delay happened, how the update process will work and new features that are likely to be included in the beta.
There's an eery silence coming from Microsoft this week, with normally noisy internal messaging boards and distribution lists going quiet about Mango and staff being unwilling to comment on the beta or Mango itself since the reviews went live. Neowin was contacted by a source inside Microsoft (who obviously did not want to be named) that told us that there was an issue with the build that was to be released this week. Apparently, the build that was to be released had a faulty upgrade script that pointed to a Microsoft Corporate file share, which would not work outside the company, which inevitably caused the delay. Our source says that after the delay, we should expect to see the "AppHub release within a week."

Would the beta be available for everyone or just devs. We simple users can comment too ... about things that devs do not notice due to their orientation

It is only for people who develop apps for WP7.
This release is not a beta version in the case of a beta test. Microsoft is not testing Mango.
Instead, they give developers early access to new features so that developers can start developing mango apps now.
That way when Mango is launched this fall, there will already be apps that take advantage of the new features.

Mango release Sept 1st ?

Just found this on Pocket-lint.com ..

Microsoft will roll out its latest phone operating system, currently codenamed Mango, to Windows Phone 7 users starting on 1 September, Pocket-lint has exclusively learnt. Therefore, that will be the date that the company will start its fightback against Android and the iPhone.
Multiple trusted sources have confirmed to us that the start of next month will see the new OS, available to developers over the summer, launching on new handsets, as well as becoming available to current WP7 customers.

True, but it was also a rumor that the Mango beta was going to be released to developers, and that happened. It was also a rumor that Mango was RTM, and just a couple of days later that was also confirmed.
There are a couple of good reasons to unveil it at that time. Not only would it beat Apple and Google to the punch, giving WP7 (mostly) undivided media attention for a month or so, but it would allow new devices to be announced at IFA. Seems like a good plan to me.
I would be very surprised if it was not available in time for the Build conference, so Sept 1 feels right. I certainly expect every paid Build attendee will be getting a Mango phone of some sort.

I don't, would be nice
although september first would be really ideal. TO beat the apple crunch but also for OEMs to churn out new F/W updates too
It should be landing around that time. I mean, it is done and all. So the release is immanent.
Damn if its Sep 1 for first class users like ones with branded contract wp7 users .. Than I think my unbranded, expansys unlocked German Samsung Omnia 7 will get it by Mid November .. :'(

Yea, but, after NoDO, that was a mess...
Let's hope they release it to Zune to everyone on Sept 1st but, I wonder what the carriers are going to do, if they stop it or not.
At least things look like it's possable to happen but, this did not come directly from Microsoft, so take it with a grain of salt...
It won't be coming to Zune on September 1st. That's already a given. Plus, when it is ready I expect Microsoft to release it to us on a rolling schedule, not all at once. Any release on that date will likely be in the form of new hardware announcements, and possibly the announcement of the initial schedule for delivery to existing phones.
As for Nodo, technically no carriers blocked it. If they had, there would be people out there who were still running 7004 due to carrier block, and that isn't the case. NoDo is available right now for every phone. The whole "carrier blocking" issue was a mole hill made into a mountain.
What some carriers did (which was pathetic and reprehensible) was take far too long during their internal testing and updates to their own apps. What should have been a 4 week process ended up being a 4 month process in some cases.
Whether Microsoft will be able to motivate them to be quicker this time is anyone's guess, but one thing that is different is that we know the exact date that the carriers all received the final build of Mango (and we also know that they received earlier builds as well for development purposes).
Unfortunately, for now all we can do is wait and see what happens.
Ms employees are getting it today

Someone please leak it so I don't have to wait till next year for Verizon to release it....

Samsung--Android 4.0 Kernel Source Code Released

Anyone?
"Over the past few months there's been a growing trend among manufacturers to play nice with the development community. We've seen Sony release early alpha builds of Android 4.0, Asus bow to community pressure and unlock the Transformer Prime's bootloader, and HTC offer similar unlocks for almost all of its devices. This newly-found openness doesn't seem to be abating: Samsung has made the kernel source code for its Galaxy S II Android 4.0 update available for public download, and HTC has followed suit with similar releases for its Vivid, Sensation, and Sensation XE smartphones.
The kernel source is a valuable tool for developers, providing the code needed to easily modify core device functions, allowing for CPU overclocking and countless other tweaks. Although both companies release kernel source codes for all of their models, these releases are unusually prompt, and hint at a change in attitude towards the development community.
Those of you inclined to trawl through vast sections of code can find the releases in the source below. For the rest of you, stay tuned for news of the first community efforts to come from the releases."

Dates for upcoming events?

Hello guys,
Can anyone post any date of rumored upcoming events in the phones world? For example, talking about Android, is it known when the new Nexus phones are approximately going to be released ? (I know nothing is certain but are there any rumors?) Is there any rumor about the date (not features) of Android 4.2 release?
I know Apple is rumored to hold an event on October 17 for iPad Mini. I just want to know the upcoming events dates of Google and Android OEMs.
Again, I know most of the news are rumors, but I want to know these rumors. Thanks !
