i installed mango RTM over the weekend and its been great. as i've been playing with it i've noticed 2 things
1. if you're texting with someone and you place the messaging app into "standby" (press windows button) and you get a text msg notification toast, if you click the toast it opens up a new copy of the messaging app. you can verify this by going into the multitasking switcher, you'll see 2 panels of "messaging". is this a bug or is this how its supposed to be?
2. i'm not really a big user of facebook chat but i am on gmail all the time so i was wondering if there's any way we can hack gchat on? gchat and fb chat both use the jabber protocol and since fb chat is enabled natively, we know there's a possibility of it being supported. any ideas?
thanks!
1: The "Multitasking" fast App switcher isn't showing instances of open apps. It's just showing recently use apps. Every app is in stand by mode if you don't "Back" out of them with the Back Button. The Task Switcher also has a 5 page limit. Apps outside that limit are still open/standby, just not in the list. At least this is how I believe it works. No way to tell till we have enough resume enabled apps that are Mango compatible to test this more. It's not the greatest implementation of Multitasking IMO. My 2 complains is this multiple pages of the same app issue that you mentioned & the 5 page limitation. When I'm really active on my phone, I can see this being an issue. Not a deal breaker, more of an annoyance.
1. The task switcher just show what you've done last. Also, native apps are always running and are not confine to the same restrictions as 3rd party apps.
2. Now that Microsoft open up Marketplace for Mango apps submissions, it won't be long before unofficial Google Talk apps show up.
Something that I noticed with wonder reader. Dont know if it's how the app is made, but..
When you open it, you hit windows (home) button, and hit back, it just come back instantly. But if you open it using the tile, it dont resume. It re-open it and it's not instantly.
Anyone else noticed?

Microsoft made a conscious design decision that apps started from the tile (on the Start screen or app list) are started as a new instance. The only way to fast app switch is by going through the backstack (either navigating sequentially via the back key or directly via the app switcher). I believe "a consistent user experience" was cited as the reason for this behavior.
This is quite different than in iOS, where the app switcher AND the home screen icon will fast resume an app (if still in memory). And that is why iOS has a way to delete apps from the app switcher, because that's the only way to start a new instance (it's also why Windows Phone doesn't need a way to clear apps from the app switcher). I happen to think Apple's design is better because more often than not, a user is looking to resume an experience, no matter how they end up starting app; therefore it should be the default behavior.
With Windows Phone deep linking, clicking on a secondary tile, toast notification, or a search extension can launch directly into a "page" inside the app, but it still takes time to fire up new instances of the app and the page.
You might also be interested to know that an app can only appear in the backstack once. So if you open an app using the main tile, then to go to the Start screen and start it again with a secondary tile, it'll knock the first instance off the backstack.
Anyway, probably more than you ever wanted to know but hope this clears it up.

I have an acer Iconia with Honeycomb, I was wondering if there was a way to improve the performance of the facebook games, they are unplayable , the one I mostly tested it on is Ravenwood fair. I know its not a hardware problem because it actually plays other games that arent facebook apps pretty well.

right click inside game app and flash setting should come up. there change permission to use mx offline cache. this will increase performance drastically. let me know if this helps.
how do you right click?
I found flash settings manager, but it keeps reverting to the mobile manager, which has very little options

It must be detecting the browser as a mobile app. Try the following. Intructions are for the default web browser.
1.Download and install Flash 10.1 from market (skip if already installed)
2.Open your browser, go to facebook.
3.type into the browser about:debug and press go. The browser will go right back to the same screen you were on previously and it appears that nothing happens.
4.Press your menu button(bottom left physical button)
5.Press "MORE"
6.Scroll down to "Settings"
7.Scroll all the way down to the bottom where you see "UA STRING"
8Choose "Desktop" This will "trick" websites into thinking you are logging in from a PC computer and not a Droid.
9.Hit back until you are on the facebook page again.
10. Refresh your browser and launch Farmville!!!
After completing the above steps you should be able to get the regular settings manager for flash. Enjoy!
Enjoy
ua string is desktop, the regular manager flashes up for a second and then it goes back to mobile.
since i never could get the regular settings manager to stay up. I brought it up on my computer, I do not see a mx offline cache setting.

Does anyone have a clue what omnichron is talking about. Permission set mx offline cache , ha google comes up with this thread. He is smart enogh to get it working but cant tell anyone the proper steps......or he is just trolling
is this still a no go with ICS? heck about all I wanted to do with the tablet was play facebook games and read forums, at least I can read forums on it.
Since upgrading to ICS several days ago, two websites that I frequently visit on my tab are malfunctioning - seems to be javascript-related and somewhat browser independent. The sites are pcworld.com and nbcnews.com. In general, on pcworld.com, links don't work. Nothing happens when I tap them (they do highlight in light blue - that's all). On nbcnews.com, which forces the mobile site using some browsers, the links to stories and the down arrow to "show more stories" don't work. Both of these situations (pcworld and nbcnews) exist for the stock browser, Dolphin, and Chrome (also installed and tried Maxthon and Skyfire just to check - same issue there), but both sites work fine in Firefox and Opera. However, if I disable javascript in Dolphin, pcworld.com works fine, and I can link to stories on nbcnews. The "show more stories" in nbcnews.com still doesn't work but the screen behaves a bit differently when I tap it. Chrome, by the way, pretty much goes non-functional if I disable javascript in it - none of the browser control buttons such as bookmarks, recent sites, etc. work at all.
Pcworld was definitely working before going to ICS. I think nbcnews had gotten a little squirrelly. My conclusion that it's a javascript issue is based on the fact that disabling javascript restores link function to pcworld and at least to the nbcnews.com stories. Any thoughts?

I am currentlyon stock ICS DDLP5. it works fine with the stock browser. Also works with dolphin, firefox chrome and opera. No issues.
So now some people are actually getting the update from Verizon, and these websites seem to be working fine for them. I upgraded per Electron73's post. What might be different about my tab now than those who are getting upgraded by Verizon that would cause this issue?
Is it possible that the problem is that Electron73's instructions by which I upgraded to ICS result in a rooted device? I'm totally ignorant of this stuff and have no idea what possible problems could arise from being rooted. If that could be the problem, how can I unroot? I have no need to be rooted.
rooting only opening an acces to the device with administrator account... it only put 2 files to your device... one is a program to govern the root... superuser or supersu and another one is system/xbin/su binary files. that's it... to fully unroot you just need to delete this 2 files from your device.

Thanks. I've done that now. I didn't really think that would fix my problem, and it didn't.
I've read that people who got their tab updated by Verizon / Samsung (many by sending them in) have i815.07 V.LP10 / I815LP10 (note the .07) vs. the .04 that I have installed. Possible issue?

That's what I'm thinking. I wish electron could get an updated version. My wife is tired of seeing some elements on some of her favorite websites just not show up (images, links, etc). No way I'm unrooting until Verizon/Samsung get their OTA mess sorted out though.
As I mentioned, the websites that aren't working for me are failing in the stock browser, dolphin, chrome, and every other browser I've tried except Firefox, Opera, and now Puffin. Tonight I stumbled upon how to view the javascript console in the stock browser. When I view the javascript console after attempting to follow a link to an article on pcworld.com, I see a long ULR (with static.ak.facebook.com in the middle), followed by the console message "Given URL is now allowed in the Application configuration.: One or more of the given URLs is not allowed by the App's settings. It must match the Website URL or Canvas URL, or the domain must be a subdomain of one of the App's domains." there is a different message about Viewport argument value "device-width;" when I try to navigate the mobile nbcnews.com website. Pcworld works fine if I disable javascript; on the nbcnews mobile site, I can link to articles with javascript disabled but I still can't "Show more stories." Wierdly, about every 1000 tries or so (literally), a link or "Show more stories" will randomly work with javascript enabled, but only for one try.
Any ideas??
Yet another issue - hitting the back button in the stock browser, Dolphin, etc., usually doesn't take me to the previous visited webpage; it just reloads the current page (with some exceptions). If not for Opera and Firefox, my tab would basically be useless for web browsing. (Interestingly, Chrome does not have this issue even though it shares the stock browser and Dolphin's issue of not being able to follow links on nbcnews.com, pcworld.com, etc.) I like the device but am starting to wonder if I should give it up... Any idea if reverting to Honeycomb (!) would restore web browsing? HC was crap but at least I could use the browser.
Based on a little back and forth with Dolphin support and some deductive reasoning, it seems clear to me that any webkit-based browser is going to give me the same issues. I read this morning that Opera is getting ready to abandon its in-house web engine in favor of webkit. That will leave me with just Firefox and Puffin (which some say is insecure and in any case lacks a lot of basic features), neither of which I really like using.
So something seems inherently broken in webkit in the i815.04 V.LP10 version of ICS I have installed. I suppose many don't use their tablets extensively for web browsing so maybe this isn't an issue for most users, but I do browse a lot with it and now feel like my tab is "broken" (sort of the way I felt with Honeycomb that prompted me not to wait for Verizon to fix its failed update). I went so far as to buy a Nexus 7 yesterday morning, but I really didn't like the display and returned it in the afternoon.
I think in Electron73's post there was a link to a download that could be applied to return the tab to Honeycomb. Is that true, and if so has anyone tried reverting and then getting ICS through the OTA update? (It seems that people who have v.07 instead of .04 don't have the browsing problems I've been posting about.) If I reverted to Honeycomb (assuming that's possible) and couldn't get the update OTA, would Verizon / Samsung detect that it had been modified if I tried to get the update by sending it in as so many have had to do? Any other thoughts on possible fixes? Obviously I am pretty ignorant...

It seems as if my browsing issues may not be similar to what you're experiencing. What I was seeing on my wife's was images not showing up on certain shopping websites (no matter what browser she used) , and sponsored links not working in Google searches. I discovered the problem: the hosts file is NOT stock, and is set to block a lot of sites, or elements within them. I removed every entry in the file except for 127.0.0.1 localhost, and EVERY problem she was having has disappeared!

It was a bit of a PITA at first since none of my edits would stick. Finally found an app called Hosts Editor Pro in the Store. Soon as you open it up, it seems to replace the current file with a very basic one. Once I rebooted after that, I checked the contents of the file, and only the one entry was there.

So do you happen to know if she can follow links on the sites I mentioned (nbcnews.com, pcworld.com) without any problem? And go back to the previous page by hitting the back button? I think one person replied to my original question that they could not, but I'm still trying to figure out if it's some anomaly or a universal result of updating to 4.0.4 in this manner.

When you flashed electrons build, did you use the wipe version, or not?

I tried to no-wipe first, but it hung for about a half hour, so I went back and did the wipe version.
I've given up on it. I'm giving the tab to my daughter, who won't care about a few browsing incoveniences. I went to Verizon today and bought a new one. I was nervous because I planned to return it if it wouldn't get ICS OTA and they said there would be a $70 restocking fee. But when they stuck the SIM card in and started setup, I could see that it already had ICS on it (the bright blue circle was spinning). The setup didn't look fresh (didn't start with the setup wizard or whatever it's called -- booted directly into the default homepage), even though the tab was sold as new and certainly appears to be. Also, Baseband is i815.04, not .07. My uneducated guess is that the've taken new ones in the warehouse that had Honeycomb and flashed ICS, then shipped them to the stores, so they won't have to deal with all the the returns.
I use Fox2phone quite a bit for easily sending links to my phone from the comp.
But off late i've been facing some issues where the links sent are a hit or miss..
need to restart the phone every now & then to get the links sent.
just wondering if there are any alternatives out there which does a similar function or perhaps even more?
thanks
Ya, PushBullet and it is awesome!!

In my opinion it trumps Chrome2Phone times 10.
Can push files/links/etc from browser to phone and vice-versa. Oh and you can also get notifications of pretty much anything (texts, email) on your Chrome Browser on your PC which is handy.
+1 Pushbullet
Wow. Great and useful app. Lists, maps, links, notes and even files. Super easy and mirroring of your phone's notifications in the reverse direction to your browser!

@bekyndnunwind
have you had any instances when this did NOT work?
shows as pushed from Firefox, but link doesn't appear in the phone..
if i open push bullet & view pushes, it shows the links there, but it doesn't appear in the phone
i can't even replicate this..
if i restart the phone & push something, i get it..
does this require sync to be enabled or something?
In Chrome at least, it works so fast, as in less than a second. I'm almost wondering now if it's not gulping juice in the background.

I've never had a problem where it doesn't pop up instantly, but I do use Chrome not that it would have anything to do with it. Maybe it does require sync?? Not too sure about that. So if you restart the phone it starts working but then it stops working after a while? Very confused, as I've never had a single issue with it. You should try going to the PushBullet website and contacting them, they may be able to help you.

i actually did get in touch with them..
i pressed send & even before i could blink i had a reply from a rep called Ryan.
He explained that since they use Google's Cloud service, if there is any delay at their end it may not deliver to us.
he did not mention anything about sync being on or off..
i also queried him about using different instances for each installation under 'devices', cos i use firefox at home & at office and both show up just as Firefox.
you can't really differentiate between them & can't be renamed either.
he said the team is working on a platform based segmentation (macs, PCs etc) & that should be coming soon

Doesnt chrome sync only mirror tabs/history/favorites of pages you are viewing or have viewed in chrome? With pushbullet you can create notes or lists that you can send to anything that has pushbullet installed. You can also directly push a file (max 25MB) from one device directly to another. I find it incredibly useful and use it on a daily basis.
And for those asking above, if you want to get the notifications instantly, you *DO* need Sync active on your mobile device. If you dont, just open pushbullet and manually update the list and it should appear. The amount of time it takes to reach your phone still relies on your network speed obviously, but it's normally pushing such a small amount of data that it's almost instantaneous.

Hi,
On my S22 Ultra when I am using either Chrome or Opera and click on a web link that contains a pdf the phone will:
Automatically open the PDF in the browser
Proceed to lag for 30 seconds
Tell me the app (either Chrome or Opera) is not responding
Fix itself and go on as if nothing happened
My question is:
How do I restore the question prompt "Would like to: Download, Open the file"
I would like to download the files and look at them with the Adobe Acrobat Reader
This is horrible. I specifically purchased this phone for work and I often need to look up equipment specifications from their respective manufacturer's websites.
So every time now I need to look at a PDF its a whole ordeal.
Please help!
Thanks

Thanks for the reply!
I have Adobe installed and have Installed / Uninstalled it a few times to try and maybe trigger a change in the behavior, to no avail.
Unfortunately default apps doesn't seem to be the issue I am having.
I will try to describe the problem more clearly:
Lets say I go to a website that sells electronic equipment.
I find the specific equipment I am interested in.
Click on "PDF Specifications sheet"
My Opera or Chrome browsers proceed to immediately open the PDF file in a tab.
That renders the browser unusable for about 30 seconds while its trying to load the PDF basically bricking my phone because I have to wait for the PDF to load to be able to navigate to "Download PDF" so I can later view it in my adobe app.
(don't know what the behavior is with the samsung browser since I am not interested in using it)
I understand the issue. The article covers what to do, look towards the 2nd part of the article

Apologize, was on a work call so I forgot to mention I followed the default app steps a few times.
I reset all default app settings.
So it doesn't seem to be a default app issue.
The android system does not seem to notice the opening of the PDF file inside the browsers at all.
That leads me to believe this is a browser problem, so I tried finding settings in the browsers themselves, but could not.
I posted a "How to disable the built in PDF view in Opera" question in the Opera Android forums, but nobody has answered for the last 2 days.
This is very frustrating since I believe I can't be the only person with this issue, but I can't find a single trace of info on it on the internet.
Thanks!
I only use Chrome and never had this issue, it always asks what i want to open a PDF with.
Maybe cause I never checked the "use this as default" thing since I use a couple of different methods depending.
Try with Better Open With app to control the default action(s)
