[Q] USB jig to reset flash counter - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Any one know how to get the USB jig to reset the flash counter on the Skyrocket? I bought the jig for the I777 and it worked. It does not work on the I727. I can't seem to figure out what is going wrong. All I had to do on the 777 was to shut the phone off and plug the jig in and it did the rest. On the 727 it takes it into download mode, but does not reset the counter. Please help me out.

Bootloader has probably been updated to fix this. Was talk about this on the i9100 forum.

Yes it has the updated bootloader. There are ways to root and flash without tripping the counter or yellow triangle. Search they are there...

Unfortunately I had triggered the flash counter before the method of rooting with out triggering the counter came out. Do we think we will be able to work around this and reset the flash counter?

Is this the same approach that worked on OGSII or is there a different way on the SR?

In the SGSII Forum, I found that there was a I777 sbl.tar that made it so my jig would work. Does anyone know of a I727 sbl.tar that will do the same thing for the Skyrocket?

Just to clarify, it made my jig work on the SGSII, not the Skyrocket, after I had flashed a leaked version of 2.3.5. It reset the counter to NO and all was good.

Could you link to the relevant thread? I can at least take a look at it if I have some info.

the rooting method I spoke came out for the 777 and still applies to the 727. Actually all I did was root, install ROM manager, flash CWM via the ROM manager Choose the TMO GSII) and then you can flash any ROM from there without tripping the counter...

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1316726
I had flashed a leaked 2.3.5 version of android through Odin, and had returned the phone to stock ROM, but could not reset the flash counter my SGSII with the jig. I had to this secondary boot loader someone had suggested. After I did that, I used the jig and it removed the yellow triangle and it reset everything back to original. You would have thought I learned my lesson. Learning as I go. Phone is working fine so its not the end of the world. I just want to have options if I ever do need to return it for warranty issues.

from what i heard....i though that even if you reset the flash counter, they have a reset counter as well, so they may not be able to see how many times you flashed but CAN see how many times you Reset the Counter.
i was just browsing and read this on XDA somewhere....forgive me if its old news and has been solved with the Jig as well.
i personally dont care about the counter.

I take it there isn't a solution for resetting the phone to 100% original condition, i.e. flash counter, Official ROM? I am screwed if I have to take this in for warranty. I just figured someone would have been able to figure a way for all of us who may have made the mistake of flashing something we shouldn't have. Just looking for some help. It does me no good to hear that there is a way to root and install ROMs without setting off all that stuff, when it is too late. I just would like to get back to the original condition.

Actually, using this i777 file provided me with a soft-brick. multiple tries.
Unless there were more steps than just dropping this into the PDA section of odin and letting it rip from download mode, then I am out of luck for now.
No big deal. Reflashed cwm recovery and I am back. Custom Count: 14 still.
As to the jig, yeah. got one. They stopped working on 2.3.5 and up for most Galaxy S II phones. Would be happy to be corrected on this...very happy

Bit of a dumb question, I picked up a Jig from Hong Kong.. Now when you enter Download Mode manually (volume +/- then USB), I noticed on the top is said ODIN Mode.. Now, when you do it via the Jig.. It states Factory Mode.
Now here is my strange observation with this.. I flashed my phone back to stock using ODIN 1.85 & using the Jig (Factory Mode).. Everything successful.. Allowed it to do a full boot.
I put the phone into Download Mode (ODIN).. The counter said NO.
I put the phone into Download Mode (Factory).. The counter said NO.
Did I like find a Jig that wipes the count or does not register the counts ?

Thanks for the tip, LordGeek. I noticed the Factory mode when I used my jig. I'll try a restore later on to see how it goes.
Just to clarify, when you booted into the factory mode with the jig, you just ran the ODIN software normally as if you had booted into download mode manually?

I would like to buy a jig from ebay to reset my flash counter. Which jig should I buy?
I looked on ebay and fine jigs for the SGS and the SGS2.

What steps did you follow to flash that to your skyrocket and not soft brick it?
If we can pul a sbl.bin from a skyrocket with no flash counter tripped then we can fix this

[Q] Help! Bricked Skyrocket!!!

I don't really know what happened actually...I was on quickwiz 1.0.3 for about a week and last night my battery drained off completely and the skyrocket shut itself off...after I charged it up this morning, I saw a series of force closes and I did see some interesting message about "system UDI" or something not being compatible...dont remember what it was exactly though...
after that, i thought the device was soft bricked and used k0nane's method of odin to revert it back....the odin said that it was successful and rebooted my device...but, my mobile is now stuck at the bootlogo(at&t rethink possible) and keeps running that boot animation over and over without booting up entirely...
Any suggestions on how to recover from this plz?
I saw that the counter was incremented...so returning this is an issue now...trying to order my jig for that...any help will be greatly appreciated
Did you revert back to stock recovery? If so have you tried flashing cwm recovery using Odin?

If you can get into cwm recovery try restoring a nandroid if you made one if not try flashing a rom but wipe data and cache first

you should go into stock recovery Which you have if you flashed Konanes stock file.....and wipe data. if that does not do the trick. i would try wiping data again....doing the stock one more time. i been in that exact same boat, as have others. this is what i did to get out. but others have had luck just flashing 3e recovery and wiping data 3 times, flash CMW via odin and restore a nandroid to get back up and running or staying at stock. its up to you.
hope this helps.
Thanks for the reply man...but I didnt really follow what u said back there ...odining back the tar that k0nane gave should return the unit back to stock-meaning i should have the stock recovery as well...but I dont know why my skyrocket didn't boot up the whole way
Lemme explain what I did initially with my device actually- After I got my skyrocket, I used copperhed's method to flash clockwork cwm thru odin and rooted the device..after that, I flashed the quickwiz 1.0.3 thru the clockwork recovery and the thing I mentioned before happened to me...nothing more, nothing less...after this force close thing I had initially on quickwiz, I tried restoring my previous nandoid backups and all of them stopped at the bootanimation looping...nothing booted the whole way up and yes, I wiped for each restore...with none of them working, I started the k0nane's odining
I actually got this all worked out somehow now and want to share this info as it might help someone who had the same issue...After flashing the k0nane's tar thru odin, I went into the 3e recover and tried a factory reset...it asked me for a password there and i typed in the wrong password a couple of times as i dont know what the right one is...after some wrong attempts, it formatted everything(/data, cache and even the sdcad) and voila...my skyrocket booted up fine...i didnt worry much to do this as I had nothing on my sdcard and also since i have nandroid's of all my previous ROM's
But I still wanna know why this all happened..
all this panic cost me about 30 bucks to order a jig faster thru EMS....and my counter is up by 2 as I odin'd the tar twice thinking it might work
Thanks for the reply man...just figured it out...
A similar thing happened to me once, i flashed cm7 then i flash da_g kernal. After that, my phone was stuck on cm7 logo. I went back to stock and i was stuck at the rethink possible logo. After that i restared my phone into the stock recovery mode and i wiped everything and i was able to get my phone back.

i think you made this harder than it was, i honestly STILL dont know WHY this happens. but alot of people have had it happen. some say its undervolting( but i never did any of that) others thinks its Da 'gs Kernel which you were on if you flashed QuickWiz and i had his running as well. some think its the CWM itself that that is causing this because it is not for advice.
Over the past week i have STOPPED using Da g's kernel and have not that happen again.
either way, i think you went into a panic, the steps i listed WILL work weather you flashed 3e with odin or Return to stock to get 3e with Odin and WIPE ALL DATA, and CACHE. im glad you got it going though. sorry you waisted your 30 bucks bruh.
thanks for ur concern bro...i just panicked coz i wanted a working phone asap and i thought of returning mine at the att store...so used the ems shipping for faster delivery of the jig...and minutes after I ordered it, I got it all working...u can see the heights of irony here ...nyway....am glad to see it happen atleast once as I will know what to do if this happens again...for the moment, am gonna stay away from the OC kernels...

Nice catch. The ATT store folks first did a soft wipe and when that didn't fix the camera did a USB reinstall. Sounds like they didn't touch the modem though.
It's hard to believe they would hang me on that, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Yeah, there is a flash counter. You will see it when you enter DL mode.
Using a jig to get into download mode will prevent you from tripping the flash counter.
If you've used Odin previously or flashed any custom kernels in cwm your count will be 1 or greater. If not, definitely use a jig and keep the counter at 0.
If you're over 0, don't worry, try anyways. As stated, I've yet to see anyone get called out on the flash counter on a warranty exchange...

That's what I thought until I flashed DaG's custom CM7 kernel. Flashing a custom kernel in cwm can in fact trip the counter.
It appears that most "stock-ish" kernels do not trip the counter however...
Your camera FC'ing, did u ever think of doing a wipe, flash a diff ROM, fix permissions all in one session of using recovery?? That should've fixed it for you. FCin'g almost doesn't have anything to do with hardware failing; hardware fails would probably cause more serious issues like black screens, automatic power offs, overheating, etc.

Speaking of RMA and warranty, would AT&T/Samsung cover you even if you don't have the receipt? I'm thinking of buying a skyrocket for a family member off of eBay and most sellers don't have the receipts or refuse to include it. If the phone prematurely has a hardware failure I would want a replacement within the 1 year warranty period.
Samsung states that you must have the receipt for RMA but that's ridiculous. Don't they have on record when the phone was bought, etc like how Apple does it?
Anyone have experience with warranty dealings with AT&T or Samsung?
Sorry if I posted in the wrong place. I'm still noob at this.

Can't get Vibrant to enter Recovery or Download mode after Odin Flash

Hey well, to start things off I was trying to unlock my T-Mobile SGS4G to work with AT&T but it turns out it needs to be rooted first. I have rooted before and this is the first time I have ran into a problem.
What I did first:
I used Heimdall in an attempt to flash CWM Recovery so I can gain root access. For some reason the zImage was bad (?) and my phone could only get to the T-Mobile logo and then freeze.
Recovery and Download DID work
What I did second:
I used odin3 to flash back a stock T-Mobile rom in hope to fix things... and it did everything succesfully but now it's stuck in a real boot loop.
Can't get into Recovery, nor Download. It's really depressing to keep seeing that battery show over and over again.
Any ideas on how to get my computer to detect my phone again?
Thanks.
Edit:
I did every button combination + usb plug combination known to man. I uninstalled and installed the files again.
Did my phone brick because I ticked the partition tab on odin?
PLEASE help.
Our phone IS NOT the Vibrant. Hopefully someone can help you, but... I don't know. If you flashed OUR stock rom, with bootloaders... you're screwed. But, the fact you have images on your screen, should give you some hope.
Yea, I saw that, but the title says he has a vibrant. I don't know....
Head to the vibrant forum there are some un-brick tools over there...you need to get it in download mode use odin to flash stock froyo vibrant rom.. Should get it back up and running

Just to verify, pull out your battery and check if you have the SGH-T959V
One of the "download jigs" may help once you are certain which phone you have and what firmware and ROM you need to flash. You can make your own with a resistor and a microUSB plug, I bought one for $8.00, delivered, (I now see they have them on Amazon for $4, Super Saver eligible) and others have had good luck with even cheaper ones on eBay.
Also: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9403915
Jigs are cheap and unless you got the right resistor lying around buy a ready made one. Also if the phone shows up in odin you can download something whatever picture shows up on the screen. Raver has a thread about using heimdall to fix the boot files but its about six months old. Worked for me once. It might even be indexed in the bible under development.

Bricked....Ugh

Ok so I've been rooted and unlocked for a while now, but stayed with the stock rom as when I tried out Synergy Nightlies it gave me some errors. So I went to try out CleanRom 2.1, people liked it and I didn't notice any flashing errors. So I flashed it through CWM 6.0.1 and it gave me the yellow exclamation mark saying I had unauthorized data on my phone. So I followed the sticky on how to unbrick my phone using the 2 boot loaders and the root66 stock image. My issue is that when running the root66 stock image through Odin it fails at _XmitData_Read, which seems to be somewhere in system.img.ext4. I've tried rebooting the computer, the phone, Odin, it just doesn't work. So when I reboot my phone after the failure I get Odin auto loading saying:
Odin Mode
Product Name: SCH-I535
Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Official
Qualcomm Secureboot: Enable
Then an image of a phone, 2 dots, a yellow exclamation, 2 dots and a computer are shown with the message "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again.
Anyone able to help me?
can you still get to odin mode? also if you have kies installed on the computer erase it.

Kies isn't installed on the computer and yes I am still able to get into Odin Mode.
I'm under the impression that "unauthorized software" message comes from the locked bootloader (if I'm wrong about that someone plese correct me.)
Sounds like you're functional enough to be able to Odin back to stock and go from there - that's what I'd try. See the stickied thread in the Q&A forum.
I would run the FULL VRALF stock image through ODIN to return to stock. That is always the safest way out of a sticky situation.
Thanks guys, according to another post the version of EZ-Unlock I used most likely gave a false report and never actually unlocked my phone. The problem with going back to stock, which if what I'm trying to do, is that it fails.
Could be an USB issue - an intermittent connection would be most likely to cause problems while sending the system partition since that's the biggest. I've had problems using adb from time to time if I plug into one of the front-panel ports on my PC but no trouble with one on the back.
Maybe try switching ports or try a different cable ...
Actually what usb plug are you using on your computer? You should be using one in the back of your computer by the power supply. Seen the front jacks not work correctly for large transfers. Finally, try another usb cable.

Strange.... i was able to flash syergy on thefirst try. Never used odin during the whole process....
If youre rooted you need to make sure you have a custom recovery in place like cwm or twrp. Make sure you make a nand-backup.
I used casual to flash unsecure bootloader, with that and recovery in place you should be able to flash roms without any hitches....
I could never find a comprehensive guide on using odin so i never got around to testing it

So far I've tried 3 different USB cables and both a desktop, both front and back ports and a laptop, each one fails on the write of XmitData under system.img.ext4
I had a custom recovery installed and Odin is only being used to get me back to a stock rom, otherwise I did all my flashing under CWM 6.0.1 or twrp. I think the whole fake unlocked bootloader just hard bricked the software.
EDIT: Come to think of it I remember waking up to my phone in download mode. I think Verizon tried to install the update to my phone while I was sleeping. Granted it failed at the end, but I'm wondering if that did something to brick me now.
If you can get in download mode it can be saved. I woud re download the stock firmware or the 66, but personally i would go bone stock. You may just have a bad download.

Yea, I'm currently downloading at the speed of slug the newest update from the forums, will probably just redownload at home, since it's going to take over an hour >.<
EDIT:
Does anyone have a link for an older EZ-Unlocker, that is known to work, so that I don't get this problem yet again.
FIXED!
Ok, so using the newest stock rom from the dev forum worked. Can someone please give me a link to an old EZ-Unlocker so I can flash without worrying about another massive brick in my palm. I'm guessing that running the original root66 stock rom through dropbox somehow corrupted it.

I personally suggest not using the app if you already had trouble. Just root your phone using the Debug Root method in Development, download the aboot.img from Adam Outlers thread HERE to your phone, and run the commands at the very bottom in Terminal Emulater app (from the market).
That way you know for sure your bootloader is unlocked. This is what I have done and never had an issue.
Edit: Glad you got your issue resolved!

[Q] Houston, boy do I have a problem!

Just rooted my new SGS3 using New Root Method Released for Verizon’s Galaxy S3, No Odin Required. i did the data & kelvic wipe then install Clean Rom 5.0. All progressed without a hitch. Even backed up with CWM prior to flash.
I rebooted into the new rom and got this: System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless... rebooted several time with same result.
What can I do now? Thanks for your help.
Just a wild guess, but me thinks your bootloader is still locked! But I'm not sure that will even apply because I rooted my device before unlocking the bootloader. But I rooted my device via ODIN first.
You can try EZ-Unlock via the Market. The GUI is still very buggy and will show the status as unknown but the internal workings of the app works good.
You got nothin to loose in trying. Go back to stock and give it another whirl after you've unlocked the bootloader.
Of that fails then I would suggest using the tried and true method..ODIN.
G'luck!
yup your bootloader is still locked
check the downloads thread and use version 1.2.
That means your boatloader is locked. You now must Odin back to stock and start over. Droid style has a guide stickied in the development thread. Follow section 6 of it.
Next time use ez unlock version 1.2 to unlock you boatloader.

Thanks. I can't get past the warning dialogue screen. Pulled the battery, no good. PC can't see the phone with USB.

Yikes, ok
You have to get into DOWNLOAD MODE.. Power+ Volume Down+ Home key at the same time after a fresh battery pull.
Do a search on the Development forum to set up Odin on your PC.
YOU Must FOLLOW directions EXACTLY our you will have very expensive BRICK!

I lol'ed at your post. A little dramatic, don't you think? He's not even close to bricked. Just Odin from download mode back to stock, and redo the steps with bootloader unlock.
Here is a gift (working ez-unlock v1.2)

@Techsavvy
Yeah, perhaps a tad overdone on the theatricals.
Cut me some slack, I'm taking acting classes..lol
And... I know... I know..don't quit my day job!
Still having issues. I "think" I am in the download mode. Screen says Downloading.... It has Odin in red in top left corner. Device connects with Odin. BUT I am not getting a PASS message when flashing VRALEC bootchain. Last text line in Odin is: <OSM> Leave CS...
I have tried several attempts.
Suggestions?

No need to do the boot chains. Just follow section 5 of this guide and I recommend root 66 for the ROM you flash

I appreciate the theatricals...however, I am having issues with Odin. Can't get the Pass message. I assume the "Downloading..." text means I'm in the download mode. Tried several attempts. I AM glad I'm not close to bricked too! Can't afford $600 or a divorce. Might have to sell a camera instead.

And just for future reference, it's Dalvik, not Kelvic

Cool, I take it you're up and running again. Just make sure you use ez unlock 1.2 next time. And the positive is you're an Odin pro now!

Hi, I have a Verizon S3 flashed to Boost Mobile. I tried to gain root by flashing a stock rooted Rom and messed up the flash. I had to take it back to be flashed again Now I'm more cautious before hand. I should have backed it up before attempting it, I know I know lol can anyone shed some light on how to update a flashed phone as well as how to root it. I could really use the help
Also after I messed up the boost flash I paniced and flashed a sprint kernel hoping this would fix the problem. Since then anything that I've tried to view including taking camera shots and web browsing if done in landscape mode will be upside down, any remedy for this problem? I know now... root first, flash later.

Sprint kernel is causing the inversion. Flash a vzw kernel. Read first flash later.
