Camera quality - Motorola Atrix 2

Am I the only one that thinks pictures taken with the ATRIX 2 are a little blurry? Close ups are OK but average distance away pictures come out not that great

Most of my pictures come out crystal clear if i wait for the focus box to turn green which means it's "focused" as far as the the app is concerned. Although, I've had plenty of times where it thinks its focused, but the preview looks like barf. Maybe there's a different focus option for long distance pictures... I don't know. xD

Doesn't look that sharp to me, but this seems to be the trend with all the photos I've seen in reviews (don't have my atrix 2 yet). The macro shots can look good, especially the ones that showcase rocks for some reason, but further distance its pretty blurry looking compared to other high-end phones. The colors are kind of drab and probably the most annoying to me is that the image comes up much darker than it should, at least in comparison to other phones (there's several blogs that pit the atrix 2 against the gs2, amaze, etc.), so images shot at noon in a clear sky look like they are shot in a cloud covered day. These are probably automatic settings. Dunno about adjusting it and all that. Wish it would autofocus in video too.

Drag the focus box instead of tapping.

The camera is on par with most of the devices out there, sure there are some better but this phone is just fine. If your taking a picture that you need to scrutinize that much then use a camera not your phone. Personally I bought my phone to be used as a phone with the benefit of having a camera. I don't understand why people buy a device an then scrutinize it to hell. Would you buy a car without test driving it?

Is it better than Adobe Photoshop Express?

Not bashing the camera at all here I was just getting opinions from others about the picture quality from a supposed 8mp camera
Sent from my MB865 using xda premium

The A2 has a ton of potential but there's too much time after you press the photo. Press the button and it takes so long the pics blurred from movement. The oem cam app is lame and it doesn't do good at night. I used cam zoom and it does torch mode for night. Also during the day colors were washed out even in indirect sun light. I really like the camera but the SGS II oem camera app destroys it. The pics regardless of the light are sharp, clean, and overall great. I did however really love the HD recording. Did some really good recordings with zero complaints.

You do realize that picture quality has very little to do with the megapixel rating (size of the picture the camera can take), right?

Yeah I do realize but in most cases higher MP do result in a better picture. 8mp cameras usually shoot better than a 5mp. But the quality issue probably is because of shutter lag

No, no, no, you got it all wrong. The megapixel rating just tells you how large of a picture the camera can take, the sensor is what determines the quality of said picture. Read this article to get a better understanding.

These are my pics. Just trying out the capitvate I borrowed from my cousin, running cog 4.1.1. For some reason macro shots are good, however other than that, pictures look horrible with little detail and lots of noise. But hey, may be the rom or what not, hard to believe macro focus can produce good stills whilst auto focus or face produce horrible stills. No scenes or effects in them, simply sharpness and saturation +1.
I just noticed the macro shots are all better in this thread too,
i was just about to say ive been un-impressed with the 5.0 MP cam.
I noticed this before custom roms as well, with updated cam firmware, so custom roms are not an issue, but i am going to play around with macros now....
@tru
So you see it too. o.o
My HD2 can produce good still shots with auto focus, but when it comes to macro, the captivate out performs it. Both in that it knows how to correctly focus and it has a lot more detail.
I refuse to believe the captivate is only good with macro shots.
Some good ones I liked.

I've generally had good results with the cappy's camera myself, but as mentioned, the macro mode is probably the best this camera gets. They have an HDR simulator in the Camera 360 app, but I never have that much luck with it; too much noise.
can you clearify what you mean by macro mode? so im not assuming. I notice the panorama shots look better, is that one of the macros you are talking about? on my cappy its called shooting modes not macros!
i think bulletproofs first pic is the best but none are GOOD! (no offence mine isnt better)

Macro mode is used for taking close pictures, like of food, flowers, leaves etc. What you do is press the gear icon, and then focus mode. It will be set to autofocus by default, but you can set it to macro for close pictures.

Fisheye'd lens attachment for the G2x.

Don't drool! Welcome the first G2x with a fisheye'd lense. It's a completely removable. I used this same lense on my Samsung Vibrant (and the sample photos you'll see below are from the Vibrant, NOT the G2x just yet). Now my G2x will be doing all the work.
The lens has a magnetic ring on the rear and then you apply a ring as well to the camera on your phone that has some adhesive in the rear of it.
Some of you will ask where I got it from. Well. There are several types on the internet of the same brand, but this one seems to give the best picture and less blurriness around the edges. It rocks.
Only issue I see is the flash will be semi-blocked and might cause odd lighting. Since I came from the Samsung Vibrant it won't be such a big deal to turn the flash off for the time being.

I just went to ebay under In Cell Phone & PDA Accessories. I typed in "Lens" for a general search because i wasn't sure what was available. they are all universal kits that usually stick on with magnets or clips
I really like the typical magnet style but also saw this as a bundle for cheap. Might be worth a shot considering the similar price.

Can you post the link of the camera app you installed on your device? ... I'm using a Nexus S and sometimes not all the pictures taken in Photo Sphere are being shown after the render is complete.. like I took a full 360 picture but i could only see half of it in the photo sphere viewer, the rest is black. Also i cannot apply the Tiny Planet effect.. the gallery FCs when i try to apply it.
Any guesses on how i can fix this?

The black is when the pictures taken aren't good enough to stitch together... even on the image i posted in here, i took shots of the sky as well but it turned black because of lighting or bad pictures... not sure exactly but that's my best guess...

Does anyone have the *newest* version (ie after November 14th) of the camera and gallery app? The one that allows sharing to Google maps, and has the arrows for photosphere to show you where the closest blue dot is?
I too noticed that when i shot fully 360° shot, up-down, left-right, photosphere just doesnt include all photos. Like it says, "hey, thats too much photos, i will remove top row pictures and stitch the others". I dont have anything black etc, sphere just doesnt include images in stitching. It might be our phone is weak or something so it cant handle.

Yea that's what I meant. I meant black as in the pictures are not included in the photosphere viewer.
Well I don't think our phone is weak for that. Because it can take panorama pics very easily, and it probably captures more photos than photosphere before stitching them all together.
I think it could simply be a compatibility issue, since the rendering bugs sometimes.
Also, did you guys manage to fix the Tiny Planet effect FC?

New Official Google Camera

So just in case not everyone follows The Droid Life, I thought I'd post the new Camera App since photography quality seems to be one of biggest aspects of the phone people chase.
Let's see how it stacks against our Generous Dev's Xdabbed's and Jishnu's modified camera apps that they have done wonders with. I don't know if it'll be of any use to us since they've been pushing the stock app to the max, but maybe it's worth giving a try for UI experience.
You need to be on Android 4.4+
Google Cam APK
Here's the DL overview of it. Tour
I myself don't think it will compare with the quality and feature's Xdabbed has packed into his but new stock options are always nice.
Update: Ok so I've done my first comparison. Both at 13MP, Med/Low Lighting, and forced flash with a steady arm.

Strange, but to me the google cam looks a alot sharper quality as per the rug and cat fur. The colors also look deeper i.e. the pink leopard spots. I'll have to play around more
Update 2: So I believe Google's Cam takes amazing pictures in ideal lighting and photo conditions, but Xdab's really strives at being a more versatile photo taker when it comes to other conditions such as low light.
Yeah, I saw this on D-L also. So far I am very impressed and happy to have Photo-sphere back in the arsenal.
One thing I want to try and do is hack the app to either add a 10Mwide [16:9] option or change the parameters on the 7.7M option to be the 10Mwide format that is available on the stock LG camera. Which is the one i use the most and allows for the full screen view w/ semi-transparent shutter button.
played around for a while. could not get photo sphere to work correctly. blur effect is good. images to me don't appear to be any better than lg stock camera app. certainly not many filters/effects etc. thanks for the download thought.

this is awesome. i love the blur effect. kinda like the M8 instead of having 2 camersa you raise the camera a bit and it takes another shot to create the depth of field effect.GENIUS!

This new google cam it is not so good in low light scenes...
Let's try to take some pics in dark scenes, you can notice that it is not able to focus using the flash led while stock/modded lg cam yes.
i dont like how small the pictures come out.
I love it, nice for custom roms!
Its really just meant for being simple and taking quick shots without cumbersome load times for instance like the HDR mode is super quick. I'm sure with more app updates on the way this camera app will have good potential
Low light shot.. first is x's camera, second is Google.

[Q] Camera Performance

Hey, M8 owners. I'm a note 3 owner looking at the M8. I came from the M7 but sold it mostly due to the camera performance and lack of expandable storage. The latter has been addressed and from I've read the camera has improved as well. However, I wanted to get the opinions of actual owners about the quality of photos taken with the M8. I'm especially interested in hearing opinions from those that frequently photograph their kids. So, please chime in with your experience.
TIA!

I'm especially interested in hearing opinions from those that frequently photograph their kids. So, please chime in with your experience.
TIA!

I came from the Note 3 and really the only thing that I miss is the camera. While the M8 camera has some cool gimmicks, the note 3 really took great photos. That said, the build quality and everything else about the phone I love - even with a smaller screen. I haven't looked back and the camera is sufficient enough for everyday use.
hope this helps.

Thanks for the response. It's a little discouraging, but I think I'll hit up a Verizon store with my daughter tomorrow and do some thorough testing of the camera. It sounds like some of the auto settings are less than ideal but that a few manual adjustments can really improve performance.

Taken in mid air. Did I spam the shutter button.... Yes. Got some blurry ones too. But for kids and everyday photography, its excellent

I own both devices and have to say that the Note 3 takes better pictures as far as I am concerned. What I will say is that I have a main line and a business line and the M8 is the phone I choose to be on the main line. Here is an example of pictures from both:

Cool, thanks. Looks good. I played with the M8 today. My daughter wasn't up to going to Verizon with me, but I think I got a good feel for the camera. Shutter speeds are fast and shot to shot tines were impressive. By no means am I a highly skilled photographer, I just want to be able to capture decent shots of my kids. I think I'll try to pick one up and give it a go. Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Here's two I took over the weekend. If someone wouldn't mind sharing their manual settings I would appreciate that. I just used HDR. These images on my desktop PC background are blurry and pixelated but look good enough for mobile viewing.
