Letf behind??? :/ - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Its been like almost three weeks since i havent seen anything new from the development area. So i guess we are left behind. What do you guys think? i remember when i used to have the mytouch 4g and the vibrant even the lg g2x and there were a lots of updates, roms, themes, like every day. But with this devices i guess we got stuck with the same things. Sucks!!!

I don't think we're left behind. At least, not yet Currently all the devs have to work with on a GB level are the leaked GB ROMs. That means they have no source code to work with thus what they can do is limited. Also, there has not been a new GB leak since last month, so no updates from that end, either.
I'm sure once Samsung releases GB/ICS or whatever they're planning & the guys can get their hands on source code that things will pick up.
Just my 2 cents

Also remember that there are about 3 devs for this phone. Dsexton currently has no computer. Whitehawkx said he would update Valhalla if/when 2.3.7 is released. And Raver who has a couple roms that are probably as good as they can get without source. Without source code we won't get too much more. And unfortunately by the time we see it many will have moved on to other devices and ics. This is where Samsung always drops the ball. They take forever to update Android and by the time they do the next operating system is out on several better phones so people move on to them.

I miss my mytouch 4g. Faux123 was the best damn dev ever.
We should send him a phone. I bet we would have CM in a week. He's the kernel king from like 4 different phones now for AOSP stuff.

I believe krylon is willing to pass on the phone. If faux is willing to take up the task maybe krylon will pass on the phone in that direction.

Probably have reached or are approaching the limits of what can be done by tweaking existing ROMs.
I'm not sure if we have anyone in the community that has the time and skills for an AOSP bringup and owns an Infuse. Once an AOSP bringup is complete, there are a LOT more options as far as places to take our device.

After coming from the x10 forum....i can wholeheartedly agree. Those crazy bastards did some outrageous stuff with stock. Heck they somehow shoved gingerbread on that thing before it even got 2.1 and thats with a locked bootloader.
Don't hate lol. As people have already said we already have some nice changes to the stock rom and more to come. I came from the Evo and had cm7...oh how that will be amazing.
From what I've read devs are working on cm but I don't know how that is going but at least its going. Devs have phones all they need it time I too hope its sooner rather than later.

Gingerbread is saposedly to be released soon(looks like canada first) so itll be put out there quicker than well get it so everyones waiting instead of having to Redo it all again

Entropy512 wrote that at this point, the developers have done as much as they can by tweaking the stock ROM. In other words, not much can be done until another ROM is pushed from Samsung and the carriers. MikeyMike01 countered and said that this is not true at all. holland6045 agreed, and said that his experience with a certain phone is that a *lot* can be done by tweaking the stock ROM of a phone. CHUDLINGS said that developers are working on porting CM7, and that more time is needed. bignate78 mentions that (possibly) a Samsung-delivered Gingerbread ROM is likely to be released in Candada soon, and that this would speed up development.
Not being very familiar with the development status, I would summarize as follows: At this point, we are limited to tweaking the stock ROM. Although developers are working on porting CM7, many are waiting for a Gingerbread ROM to be pushed to the phone (likely in Canada first) so that they do not have to start from scratch.
[@Anyone: If I've misinterpreted anything, do correct me.]
I think the part about waiting for gingerbread to drop on the canadian carrier is the most accurate
who the hell wants to waste so much time getting it over from another gs device when it's nearly ready to drop in some form ?
Yeah. I believe gtg made a comment that there are a number of tweaks to Infused that he's not bothering with because he'd have to redo them when the Canadian Gingerbread release drops.
Alright, thanks for the info men.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using Tapatalk
No problem. Also thanks to the guy who pretty much translated that all for him.
Oh and just for the record, as an example of what you can do when you really want to with a stock fw: the devs over on the x10 forum (while not infighting ) effectively gutted the stock to the bare necessities and transplanted gingerbread onto that...because even though Sony got hacked, they do a darn good job at locking down a bootloader. But in the end they bypassed that too.
Also i must say i like the community here much better, a lot more friendly and helpful.

Official update to 2.3 by years end.

Just got off the phone with magenta about my wifes phone.
while on there I asked the tech agent if she had heard anything about an update to gingerbread for sidekick 4g. she confirmed that an UPDATE TO GINGERBREAD IS IN THE WORKS! and they are hoping to have it out by the end of the year.
made me happy, just wanted to let you guys know.

is this a joke or are u serious ?
No joke. I asked if it would be getting a 2.3 update and she said they are trying to make it so that by the end of the year all major (and sk4g is considered major) android phones will be on gingerbread. she specifically said sidekick will get 2.3 and I quote "There is no date yet, but they are trying to get it by the end of the year"
Of course, you have to keep in mind that I am taking someone elses word for it. albiet, it is someone "on the inside"
In the works is very different from saying "by year's end." Samsung makes builds and sends them to Tmo, but they never make it out to the end-user until they approve it. It's very likely that the sidekick will be one of the last of the "new" phones to get GB, as they have to add much more to our UI than just porting it to fit our processor, but also need to add the social parts of our phone (whether we want them or not).
P.S. GB has been "in the works" since the phone was released, it's all a matter of getting Tmo and Samsung to agree on what constitues a good/ releasable build.
I have the strange feeling that our sk4g won't ever get gingerbread officially t-mobile has a funny way of coming out with new devices rather than updating the original ones :-/ I forsee a new sidekick with gingerbread official coming out rather than us getting an official build. Don't quote me on it or anything its pure speculation but if I'm right give me some props or something lol
Not to say we won't find a way of porting the "new sk gingerbread" to th sk4g but I have a feeling the new device is more likely hell they may even release gingerbread for us and the new sk at the same time lol
The moral of this story is: personal opinions are fun. Aren't they? Lol

long wait...
For those counting, as soon as the GB source for the SGS4G gets released I can port their GB system to our phone, their ROMs/Kernels boot on our phones, they just don't have the drivers to do anything (like display what's going on).
The SGS4G has been getting leaked versions of GB for a month+ now, so the official GB release should be soon (hopefully).

I spoke with someone that works for Tmobile and was told Tmo and samsung have been working on GB for the sidekick for more than 3 months and im guessing its taking that long cause they are trying to make it very similar to our Froyo interface, unfortunately (along with the Tmo crap). Otherwise they wouldve gave us a GB ROM similar to the SGS4G. He said he doesnt know when it'll officially be rolling out but we should have it before thanksgiving (end of november). Thats pretty far to me.. but then again i have a vibrant and still never got an official GB release so take this info with a grain of salt. as the rest of us i sure hope its comes soon. Anyone else saddened that the development of roms have basically halted?

Trigger is done, roman moved on. Xboarder stopped a long time ago.
There are about 5 left,

MIUI
CM7
Whitehawk's 2.3.3 & other stock-based roms
Faux's Nexus
That's it. I hope Krylon's & Whitehawk's up-coming rom is kick-ass.

I may be off the mark but as far as I'm concerned, NVidia's the one who screwed us all by not releasing their source. In the absence of that development can only go so far. This will be my last NVidia device of any kind if I can help it -- for phones/tablets, I'm going with TI or Qualcomm and for laptops, I'm going with ... well, whatever I can get away with
I'm happy so long as CM7 keeps chugging along and the lge_star keeps getting device-specific updates.

Yeah Nvidia can suck it. ATI and for Computers and TI/Samsung/Qualcomm for mobile.
Nvidia has never been that open with their products. And likely never will.
I'm not worried about it. Its a pretty bad ass phone, once you get it working right. Trigger and Roman aren't necessarily gone...he's just working on other phones too. Plus, I'm sure new devs are getting some G2Xs every day. Somebody will step in to fill all the voids. Whitehawkx is around, Fits is busy, faux, and obviously the CM team...our world isn't so bleak. Hell, man...get the dev tools and make us something.

Used to be a HUGE CM7 fan, still am but I am thoroughly impressed with MIUI and the level of customization and user interface, its just alot cleaner. And of couse MIUI would be nowhere without the CM7 base. Hats off to both teams! My G2x would be garbage without them.

Whose MUIU are you using? The one here or the one over on the other site?
I'm using Jface's 8.19 rom since it was released a few weeks ago and aside from the lack of WiFi Calling and WiFi Tether, it is running like a dream. Battery is good and the phone is snappy. I was getting FC's with Rom Manager Premium but RM updated and now its good.
But really, CM and MIUI are pretty much the icing on the cake. Both are updated regularly by their respective teams.
It is also funny that this thread is right above "Nightlies are like crack". There are plenty of stuff to flash and try but right now, most roms are "as good as they can get "hardware-wise" aside from little tweaks and bug fixes all of them are working fairly well.
I need WiFi calling so that version isn't a viable option for me. There are still some little bugs with the version on the other site (having problem installing and applying themes). Once the bugs are worked out it would be a viable alternative to CM7. I still use Weapons as my daily ROM, and CM7 when I want Netflix. If CM7 or MIUI found a way to get HBO Go working and allowed HDMI output control I would probably start using them on a daily basis.

Ya I just got this phone. This is the 13th android I ever had and definitely near the bottom for development. Not much variety and seems to be going downhill
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
You can't get much variety because this phone is based off Stock android. Can't really blame the devs if LG couldn't produce a respectable upgrade.
All the ROMs are based of CM7, AOSP, or Stock 2.3.3
If you seen one you seen them all. Can't have SENSE on this device. That would create more flavor of ROMs.
But the biggest deterrent is LG and NVIDIA. No support, you can only get so far. Lesson learned. Don't buy a device that has no love/support from manufacturer.
lately i've been upgrading less and less. i think once the phone gets to a stable environment (which is almost has) there really is less and less reason for development since it is stable.
There was someone that was looking into porting motoblur and optimus 2x but he seems to have gone AWOL

Anyone trying to port the ICS for us yet? :)

like in the other ics thread u started I said i would but sorta/extremely difficult without the device lol
I have been making efforts, but trying to keep them generally quiet. I am trying to build us an ICS kernel based on the kernel sources from the T989 release. It has most all of the bits that we need for our variant (our LCD panel code, earjack, etc), but it's obvious from attempting to build the thing that Samsung wasn't finished yet. At least, they weren't finished with the T769 code when they packaged up the T989 sources. I've already fixed a number of simple errors in the kernel code, but bigger ones are now holding me back.
I am not a programmer (and I keep saying this) but I am confident that with my other bits of experience, I'll be able to get a working kernel. Based on that, I am hoping that the architecture of CM9 and it's more official samsung_msm8660 base (thank you, T989 team and contributors) will make it easier to put together a build once we have a working kernel.
This phone is not without love. In as much as no one hears about it, I probably spend 50-60% of my free time trying to get something together for this phone, hitting dead ends or massive missing pieces down each road I take. An ICS kernel, which is what I am trying to build now, would be a massive bridge to get me much closer to point B from point A.

Where's the love?

Is it me, or has development for this phone gone the way of the dinosaur? This is not a complaint... Just an honest question... With all due respect for the smart developers who have contributed their valuable time to developing /porting roms for our device I feel like the development has come to almost a standstill. I've been on these forums since the heady windows mobile days and I don't remember seeing such a lull in development. I check these forums daily for a nugget of new features or bug fixes. It seems like most of the original development roms pretty much came to a stop the beginning of November. I'm just wondering if I'm missing something. Has everyone sold their gs3s and gone to the note 2? It's disappointing because I love my phone and I've only had since September. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one wondering....

Yeah it seems like everyone pretty much started working on 4.2 when Google released that code.
When we start to see CM10.1 nightlies then I think you'll see the original development pick back up. The problem is that everyone seems to depend on cm or aokp for the low - level code and until they get things sorted out, none of the aosp ROMs are going to be changing much.

I do not think the Thunderbolt would be a fair comparison. You are talking about a flagship device of the S3 compared to a device that was released on Sprint as the EVO a year earlier then the Thunderbolt. The Thunderbolt was a failed device before it was even released. And HTC wonders why they lose money qtr after qtr.
Verizon needs another Nexus device! If the GNEX was not such a POS I would still own it...There is nothing better then getting Googles latest updates and knowing your device actually has a future...Even though Verizon took a while to release an official JB update for the GNEX we had a fully working JB Rom like a day or 2 after Google announced the OS and that was with everything working. If I was not in contract I would seriously be thinking about leaving Verizon just I could get a Nexus 4. It stinks to be at the mercy of these manufactures and carriers.
And while we have great devs it is no walk in the park to bring AOSP to these devices. We still do not have a fully non buggy AOSP Rom for the S3.

It is comparable. The thunderbolt was the flagship lte phone. My brother gave me his tbolt and I put some use into it. For only a single core oc'd to what my CPU could tolerate at 1.5 it was a trooper. Big screen, first phone with talk and simultaneous data need I say more? Oh right dat kickstand. You wanna see slow go trudge in there for awhile. We waited for ICS for forever and I think HTC is still tugging their chains.
Tl;dr were fine.

I don't think there is a lack of development for this device. There isn't anything real earth shaking right now but we have come such a long way! So many great things have been accomplished! We have great devs and quality roms. The best thing I can recommend is inviting the devs in the T-Mobile and all the other service providers with a GS3. Visit there forums on XDA and contact there rom developers. I have done that and have at least one coming this way. There is nothing wrong with a fresh face and new ideas. Nonetheless, I'm impressed with our consistent development especially considering the holidays!
Another thing to consider is that many of the developers are students. Finals for many of them are the end of November or the beginning of December. Chances are they took a break to study as school is more important than the free stuff they do on these boards.
