I just got my skyrocket and in running some speed tests I'm finding the upload speeds to be lacking. With the ookla speedtest app, I've gotten up to 11 Mbps download but averaging less than 300 Kbps for uploads. This over HSPA+, not LTE.
Anyone else seeing this?
I don't have the skyrocket, but in a perfect location I'll get 1.5Mbps upload on HSPA+. Usually around .8 - .9 Mbps.
300kbps seems low, but not uncommon for many areas. This is AT&T for you. The guys with Verizon LTE around me regularly get between 5-10Mbps upload. Usually always closer to 10.
I don't think its the network, before this I had a nexus one and I was getting ~1.5 Mbps upload from the exact same location that I'm testing from.
I would double check the build.prop file in /system for any ro.ril settings like ro.ril.hsxpa. Those probably won't exist on a stock rom but if they do they could be wrong.
If they don't you can try forcing those settings. Do a google search to see what they mean if you don't know already.

Another thing to check would be to ensure att provisioned your data correctly.
I had a blackberry before my gs2 and was only getting 3g speeds even though I had a 4g plan. Att did something and I just rebooted and my downloads sped up.

I got a Nexus S 4G, I'm getting slow speeds. Anywhere from 0 to 300kbps on average. I pulled 500kbps a few times. Did a speed test next to a friends Evo. Evo pulled 1.2 mbps, the Nexus pulled 200kbps.
I called Sprint, and they flashed a few things on their side and I updated the usual suspects, but nothing changed.
I don't know anyone where I live who has one, so I was wondering if the folks here who have one have noticed slower than normal or even downright abysmal data speeds.
Thanks!
ive been blaming the network. results havent changed across multiple different devices.
I checked mine when I was in a 4g area about an hour ago and I got 4.1M down and 800K up

my reference is for 3g exclusively. granted cdma is capped at 3.1 but sprints 3g network is far slower.
ive experienced terrible sprint 3g speeds for over a year with multiple different blackberry's, multiple htc hero's, multiple htc evo's and now the nexus s 4g.
How sad. What's the use in having unlimited data if it's so slow you can't stream music on Pandora, or download things. Might as well go to AT&T and sign up for my allotted 2gb data. They have really fast data speeds around here.

Go with which ever cell company is best for your area. Here in Nashville TN, the CDMA is dominant. Where as Verizon / Sprint service is strong. My Nexus does on average 8Mbps to 10Mbps down on 4G and 1 to 2Mbps.
So im definitely taking advantage of the unlimited data usage and love it. I do about 2-3 GB of data a week lol.
If the network is slow in your area, Sprint just aint for you just as TMobile just wasn't for me lol.
The day I got my phone, last sunday, I tested the 4g speeds. It was very disappointing. I was getting the same speeds or sometimes slower than 3g. I will have to try again tomorrow if I remember to see if it improved. I'm measuring this against my old epic that used to connect to 4g much quicker and easier and it hauled ass. The ns4g is pokey. I don't know if it's psychological or not but I thought I got better speeds on the epic and evo for 3/4g.
After running some more test on the Nexus 4G. I noticed running the speed test app gave me slower speed results then other 4G phones. But when downloading large files while tethered using bittorrent or just large files in the browsed I seen the speeds hit 700KB/s to 1MB/s which is around 9-10 Mbps. I also noticed the indicator next to battery for 4G light up 2 bars where normally it is grey for no activity and 1 bar for some activity.
Maybe Google did something new to the Nexus 4G vs other 4G phones where it attempts to save battery power by not using much speed until its actually needed. Also starting to think the 4G bars don't represent reception but might represent the speed or data being transmitted which also explains why it turns grey and green.

Used the evo up until December before I jumped to at&t. Was pulling 1-1.5mbs down consistently in my area on 3g. Now with the ns4g its my first time back since 5 months ago and I'm averaging <.5mbs down in my area on 3g! Its not the phone bc I was getting the same speeds on my temporary echo phone.
My only assumption is that within the 5 months I was gone, an assload of ppl jumped on sprint's network.

i would agree, except for the fact that i just came from an htc hero and was pulling 1-2 mbps on 3g and now on my brand new ns4g im getting less than 1 mbps on 3g. Im very disappointed idk what to do i spent so much money on this phone.

With the recent news of TMO launching HSPA+ 42Mbps, wondering if anyone has noticed any sort of speed increase? Where I normally get about 1-2Mbps (at work), I'm hitting 4 1/2Mbps.
I did modify my build.prop to
ro.ril.hsdpa.category = 24
ro.ril.hsxpa = 2
Dont know if changing this made any difference
What the crap no Philadelphia? Philly was the first to have hspa+. This sux

I don't know what some people do to get these crazy mbps speeds I sometimes see posted...I live in NYC, one of the first markets to get the 42mb bump - but I've never seen my data go above the 3 mbps range...fast enough to be functional, but I'd love to know what setup people are on to get these crazy speeds.
They already been testing HSPA+ Rv2 (42mbps link) in few areas but since we have 14.4mb cap on our device and IRL half of that speed you will see if your lucky in a good day.
Far as your setting goes in build.prop:
ro.ril.hsdpa.category = 24 <<< 42.2 Mbit/s
ro.ril.hsxpa=2 <<< HSDPA/HSUPA
Make sure you test it using all the radio as its area dependent. So based on your location you may see better signal (dBm+asu) than other locations and other users. But if you got around 4mbps its normal HSPA+ post speed on Rv1 (21mbps link). Even with Rv2 link you won't get speed increase as it can be just background overhaul. What you can however do is connect via WCDMA which would give you 0.3+% faster upload.
PS: Sup epsix.
Can the cap on our phones be removed or is our hardware incompatible?
I've hit more than 10mbps multiple times. That's in Vancouver Washington too.

with in the build.prop lies a coding that will allow us to increase our data speeds but it will not do much. maybe .03% - .06% growth in speeds. It's hardware restricted. also it has alot to do with Bandwidth being using at the time, and that location. If i'm out at the Hofbrauhaus i can get wicked fast download speed from about 1am - 2am, but during the day it's easily a 1/3 of what i see at night.

Hardware standard. Hence the POS SamSUX Vibrant 4G? aka same Vibrant sold as "21mbps" but you will see no diff this is due to the current traffic and provision rate which is placed on each acc. Normally this is done though RAN, RADIUS, ect based profile.

Correct. RadioROM, location, time, network load all plays in to it.
Its a good upgrade. With hspa+ 21 you can see 10mbps peak on a mt4g, averaging about 5-6. With 42, you can get 10 on average, peaking at 12.
I'm in midtown Manhattan at work, have 4 bars on H, and have gotten less than 1 mbps 3 speedtests in a row...a couple hours ago I got in the 2mbps range. It is the middle of the day, so I'm sure the network is clogged, but that is nowhere near 21 mbps, let alone 4-5.
As was said, I guess it really varies a lot throughout the day based on time, location, other factors etc.
I am in the middle of Chandler AZ with about 4-5 bars of H and I barely get over 2.5M down & 0.5M up... Running Virtuous Fusion ROM 1.0.5 and Radio 26.09.04.26... not seeing a great improvement yet...
Let me be clear so people can understand. Our MT4G has 14.4mbps hardware limit which you can't change by editing or even updating the radio framework. Now they can drop 100mbps links as it won't still matter. When they talk about revision link speed they mean for the towers as for overall thus network capacity is increased and more user is supported without crawling bandwidth bottleneck.
Now they have QoS based policies setup on the network to handle it along with standard user radius/ran profile which will simple if they wanted you would be set to 16kbps(2kB[8kbps=1kB]) since we using SI prefix. On top of that time/location/interference also plays factor.
Think of the pipe as the road. The car as the device and the jam is network overhaul capacity. Now it don't matter if you have the fastest car in the world if the road is small thus closing and slowing down the traffic to halt and causing jam. In sense you have to understand the network topology to move it accordingly. So making the road bigger (pipe revision layout exp: 42mbps) they can flow more but does not mean your car can go faster than the original engine.
Oh man up another 3 MBs now I'm up to 8 down 4 up

But, the myTouch 4G has a hardware limit of 14.4 mb/s. The best thing we could get from this is that we hit peak speeds, but nothing more.

Just checked the article, but didnt even find new york city there. Its only launched in long island in ny. Speedtest.net results also confirm there is no improvement.
Ok, so i'm in Houston which is one of the cities and only see the normal 2-5 depending on the time of day. What do I need to do to see if i can get the faster download speeds? I saw the modification of the prop bld but than someone rambled on about how it may or may not help depending on "stuff that is way over my head". A clarification in laymen terms would be nice.
Hello,
I was wondering what I should be getting in the way of 4g speed on my sensation. I tested it a few times and the best I got was 1.8Mb/s DL and 2Mb/s upload.
Does this sound right? I know people have claimed issues with data, but I dont know what is truly normal or to be expected?
Would this be considered normal, but on the low end? Normal? Or, not even close?
Matt
1.8Mb/s DL and 1Mb/s UL is about what I get where I live. This speed is low but fortunately I have WiFi at home. The speeds you get depend on the location you are at. I have got up to 10Mb/s DL in some areas.

Depends on the area. You would have to ask your neighbor or someone very close to your exact location.
It all depends on the area you live/work.
I average between 8.5-10.5 mbps down and 1.5-3 mbps up. I am in Tulsa, OK, and our network has been upgraded to T-Mobile's 42mbps coverage.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
In San Diego I'm getting a consistent 4-6Mbps down, 1.6Mbps up no matter where I'm at. Little slow in my opinion, especially since we're an upgraded market, but whatever.
4.5mbps down in 4g in okc. While in small town outside of okc on hspa+ I get 8-10mbps down. What a joke ATT. Y'all are really sucking. Going to be looking at Verizon soon.

depending on your time and location; I've beaten my co-workers' iphone 4 and two iphone4s on speedtest.net's app. but you have to factor the load of the network stop putting blame.
two iphone4's on AT&T , one iphone4 on VZW. only the vzw iphone4 was matching closest to speeds like mine.
4g or 4g lte? Big Big difference if its one or the other. I average 3-5 megs down on 4g here in Conway. I've peaked at over 10 megs down a few times though. We haven't gotten lte upgrades on our towers yet but when we do I expect I'll see 20+ megs down at least!
In Philly,
depending on the day, the time, the location, whether I wear my socks, etc...I can get between 1 and 9 mbps down, 1-3 up.
In South Jersey at my folks (who live in the woods), I can get 4-5 down. 3 miles away out on the marsh, I get over 10.
LTE-long term evolution. Suuucks....actually its ATT.

I average 25 mbps down in dallas on ATT LTE. When i drove through OKC i was getting about 15 down. Having used Verizon, i hate their coverage and their service. If you dont get their LTE, their 3g is 1mbps tops. I dont understand why everyone bashes on ATT.
Edit:
And Verizon's LTE is about 12 average on a good day. Peak of 18, low of 5.
how can anyone complain about 4.5 mbps down on their phone ???
goodluck with verizon, if you dont get an LTE signal your download speed is going to be less than 1mbps.

so was I . I would get 1.8mbps at my house (on 3g) on sprint but anywhere else i was that was not 4G i would get 15kpbs to about 600kpbs. It was painful.
On the 4g network (hspa+) i usually get anywhere from 3 to 9 mb/s, but when i hit the 4g lte area in NYC i see speeds anywhere from 20 mb/s on the outskirts of the city to 50+ mb/s in the center of the city, also depends on how much load is on the network. If your on a custom gingerbread rom try using the V6 supercharger 3g booster script with script manager and try playing around with the options, i usually choose the known maxed out values for the best possible speeds

That's sad.
Important thing with Att is reliability. Verizon lte was out several times in a short period of time. And you get they're crap version of 3g as a backup if that. I'm assuming all the cdma iPhone users are clogging it.
AT&T gets hspa+ as a backup if anything happens to lte, although there aren't any reports of outages with it as of yet. Enhanced 3g is more than enough for me, i use my phone to browse the internet, not tether or stream.
So Im in my house next to a window and I get 4 bars on my ns4g. I have 3g on and my speeds are only 392 kbps. Then when i go downstairs I get 1 bar and my speeds are back up to 1 mbps. Why is that so? Thats stupid how that works. I know sprint data capacity s bad but it just goes from 392 kbps to 1000 kbps with fewer bars?!?

data speed depends on how many people are accessing data. i can get 6mbps download speeds on my ns(tmobile), then 30 seconds later 2mbps. it really is about how congested it is. usually, youll get the fastest/most steady speeds in the middle of the night when the networks arent busy.
