T-Mobile Announces Launch Of HSPA+ 42Mbps - myTouch 4G General

http://www.tmonews.com/2011/05/t-mobile-announces-launch-of-hspa-42mbps-in-50-markets-rocket-3-0-available-may-25th/
With the recent news of TMO launching HSPA+ 42Mbps, wondering if anyone has noticed any sort of speed increase? Where I normally get about 1-2Mbps (at work), I'm hitting 4 1/2Mbps.
I did modify my build.prop to
ro.ril.hsdpa.category = 24
ro.ril.hsxpa = 2
Dont know if changing this made any difference

What the crap no Philadelphia? Philly was the first to have hspa+. This sux

I don't know what some people do to get these crazy mbps speeds I sometimes see posted...I live in NYC, one of the first markets to get the 42mb bump - but I've never seen my data go above the 3 mbps range...fast enough to be functional, but I'd love to know what setup people are on to get these crazy speeds.

They already been testing HSPA+ Rv2 (42mbps link) in few areas but since we have 14.4mb cap on our device and IRL half of that speed you will see if your lucky in a good day.
Far as your setting goes in build.prop:
ro.ril.hsdpa.category = 24 <<< 42.2 Mbit/s
ro.ril.hsxpa=2 <<< HSDPA/HSUPA
Make sure you test it using all the radio as its area dependent. So based on your location you may see better signal (dBm+asu) than other locations and other users. But if you got around 4mbps its normal HSPA+ post speed on Rv1 (21mbps link). Even with Rv2 link you won't get speed increase as it can be just background overhaul. What you can however do is connect via WCDMA which would give you 0.3+% faster upload.
PS: Sup epsix.

Can the cap on our phones be removed or is our hardware incompatible?

I've hit more than 10mbps multiple times. That's in Vancouver Washington too.

with in the build.prop lies a coding that will allow us to increase our data speeds but it will not do much. maybe .03% - .06% growth in speeds. It's hardware restricted. also it has alot to do with Bandwidth being using at the time, and that location. If i'm out at the Hofbrauhaus i can get wicked fast download speed from about 1am - 2am, but during the day it's easily a 1/3 of what i see at night.

Hardware standard. Hence the POS SamSUX Vibrant 4G? aka same Vibrant sold as "21mbps" but you will see no diff this is due to the current traffic and provision rate which is placed on each acc. Normally this is done though RAN, RADIUS, ect based profile.

Correct. RadioROM, location, time, network load all plays in to it.

Its a good upgrade. With hspa+ 21 you can see 10mbps peak on a mt4g, averaging about 5-6. With 42, you can get 10 on average, peaking at 12.

I'm in midtown Manhattan at work, have 4 bars on H, and have gotten less than 1 mbps 3 speedtests in a row...a couple hours ago I got in the 2mbps range. It is the middle of the day, so I'm sure the network is clogged, but that is nowhere near 21 mbps, let alone 4-5.
As was said, I guess it really varies a lot throughout the day based on time, location, other factors etc.

I am in the middle of Chandler AZ with about 4-5 bars of H and I barely get over 2.5M down & 0.5M up... Running Virtuous Fusion ROM 1.0.5 and Radio 26.09.04.26... not seeing a great improvement yet...

Let me be clear so people can understand. Our MT4G has 14.4mbps hardware limit which you can't change by editing or even updating the radio framework. Now they can drop 100mbps links as it won't still matter. When they talk about revision link speed they mean for the towers as for overall thus network capacity is increased and more user is supported without crawling bandwidth bottleneck.
Now they have QoS based policies setup on the network to handle it along with standard user radius/ran profile which will simple if they wanted you would be set to 16kbps(2kB[8kbps=1kB]) since we using SI prefix. On top of that time/location/interference also plays factor.
Think of the pipe as the road. The car as the device and the jam is network overhaul capacity. Now it don't matter if you have the fastest car in the world if the road is small thus closing and slowing down the traffic to halt and causing jam. In sense you have to understand the network topology to move it accordingly. So making the road bigger (pipe revision layout exp: 42mbps) they can flow more but does not mean your car can go faster than the original engine.

Oh man up another 3 MBs now I'm up to 8 down 4 up

But, the myTouch 4G has a hardware limit of 14.4 mb/s. The best thing we could get from this is that we hit peak speeds, but nothing more.

Just checked the article, but didnt even find new york city there. Its only launched in long island in ny. Speedtest.net results also confirm there is no improvement.

Ok, so i'm in Houston which is one of the cities and only see the normal 2-5 depending on the time of day. What do I need to do to see if i can get the faster download speeds? I saw the modification of the prop bld but than someone rambled on about how it may or may not help depending on "stuff that is way over my head". A clarification in laymen terms would be nice.

Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
TMobile has upgraded a few cities (and plans to upgrade more) to theoretical speeds of up to 42mbps. Since the radio in the g2x goes up to 14.4 this will have no impact on our phones. That said I've yet to see the phone that even hits 14mbps, so I don't really think having a radio capable of 42mbps would even really matter. I mean I've still yet to see the 14.4 radio that has actually pulled down a real world speed of 14.4mbps. I think all that stuff sounds great on paper but in real life odds are you won't see that speed.
off topic:
On wifi at home I get 20+ mbps download
I posted the following at the thread on 3g in the status....more appropiate here,so I duplicate it.
I have to put my two cents in on speeds.
I started (my smarty phone odyssey) on Metropcs in Feb....most speed test ever showed was like 1.6mbps...once. Mostly at 1.4-1.5. I was very unhappy with that. Between these speeds, battery issues, no support (from Samsung), I had enuff and went to Sprint. I saw around1.0 Mbps in the beginning. When I complained, they made an adjustment on their end amd it got worse! My average was .65 up and down. Then I went back to Metro. Seems they are suddenly having speed issues. Couldn't get more than about .80, with the same other issues as before. So I've purchased the G2x.
Got two yesterday!!
Both have bleed. Doesn't bother me as it is though. Just noticeable when screen is black. It IS bs, but not a dealbreaker, if it doesn't get worse.
I see people talking about speeds of 8 and 9Mbps and I say I'd be happy with a third of that.
Personally I don't think speedtest is accurate. But I never see that discussed.
T Mobile is supposed to activate these tomorrow. I'll post my speeds. If I get anything above 4.0, I'll be in heaven.
I have looked at youtube videos via wifi and am in awe of this device. Really smooth playback. Wow. Better than the Indulge AND the Evo IMO.
My new phone is supposed to activate tommorow. Can't wait
Oh and I'm in the Dallas market. I'm on top of DFW airport. Dallas is Metros home market so system is overall good here, but I'm in a bit of a dip so reception can be an issue in my home.

highest I've ever actually speed-tested is ~21 Mbps down, ~5Mbps on wifi and ~9Mbps down, ~2Mbps up on H. I don't belive H+ is available in my area at this time (Indianapolis, IN).

Slow LTE speeds?

Hey guys i'm using the HTC Thunderbolt and i'm have an issue. The first week I had it I was getting speeds from 20mbps all the way to 32mbps down...now im barely getting 5 up and 3 down. Any advice?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
same here, im gettin 11 up and 5 down.
los angeles, ca.
As more 4g devices are sold our connection will get slower and slower you can't really expect 20mb down can you? I mean Sprint network only gets 3 down on 4g ours won't get that slow but just a comparison.

5 up and 3 down here also, it has slowed way down for me!!!
Had that problem the other day. I was getting mid/low 2s. 5 isn't that bad. It's advertised speeds are 5-12.
EDIT: Just checking my speeds now, getting low 2s again.
that should be around what it should be once lte gets more and more used right?

I'm getting no issues on mine. Speeds are still the way they were. ~25down ~6-7up (in mbps)
of course that could change as more people jump in to the lte bandwagon.
In Cincinnati I was pulling 30ish down the first week, and now I am seeing consistant 11 everywhere, and in some places 15-20. Depends on where I am. Same signal strengh where I am at home and at work, but at work I do sit around 20 down, and at home 11ish.
Pretty happy with LTE over all, compaired to the WiMax I had that I couldn't even get in my house. lol.
23.09 Mbps down and 15.75 Mbps down here, it stays about the same all day, give or take 5 Mbps.
thats on CM7 though, im sure on stock it would be higher.
It's been the same for me and better too. At work my speed has been consistently ~17-20Mbps. The difference in the last week has been at my house, where I've gone from ~5-9Mpbps to ~15-20Mbps, rivaling my home FIOS connection. WOOT!
As long as VZW continue to expand their 4G network, it should be relatively easy for everyone to break 10Mbps
I haven't seen any noticeable difference here in the Metro-Detroit area. Last speedtest i ran was around 13-15 up and 4-5 down.
One thing to remember is that the speedtest.net app doesn't give consistent or accurate readings. If you go to speedtest.net from your phone's browser, you'll see much more accurate results.
Just ran a speedtest and got 30 down and 7 up. No difference at all for me. I'm in Baltimore, MD.

i dont live in philly but ive never tested above high 7's down/up. fastest has been 7.8ish down and the same up. normally it's between 5 and 6. i've been to and thru the city a lot since getting the TB @ launch, including testing with 4 bars on a boat under the Commodore Barry Bridge, elsewhere on the Delaware river, and a few miles up the Schuylkill with no obstructions and the fastest was still mid-7s. Also have done tests in Olde City, near the sports complex, and in centre city. nothing above 8.
across the river in NJ along the 295 corridor i get the same 4G speeds as philly. i've never tested faster than 8mbps down anywhere so far, which includes all of philly, northern DE near Wilmington, and the baltimore-DC corridor and greater DC.
running stock non-rooted with speedtest.net app. via wifi @ home i hit my advertised speeds of 16-20 down
maybe our 4G just sucks...didnt they even do initial LTE testing here? verizon is extremely present and active in phila. since it's basically a home city for them.

Actually I'd say your 4G rocks and is the best management of Verizon's network. They advertise 5-12Mbps down and 2-5Mbps up, and you are in the middle to low end of that guaranteed speed down and easily in the middle to top of the upload. That means Verizon is paying for the right amount of bandwidth to all of their towers in the area that you have been on, without overpaying to have way more than is needed like the people getting 16Mbps all the time. That 16Mbps means they have like 2x more bandwidth than needed, so they are paying the ISP's twice what they really need to and are thus making less money, from a business standpoint your region is the perfectly managed area. If your average speeds drop below 5Mbps be sure to call in and complain though.
Meh this LTE network is finckey. I probably should have specified that im in more of the suburbs in Radnor near Villanova

my speeds kind of doubled. I'm in the east bay (Fremont, near San Jose) i only had 1 bar but managed a steady 3.4mbps down and 1.2mbps up. I usually get half of that with 1 bar of 4g reception. I did not test while I was out and about today, but Fremont was not one of the 55 cities.
i need to speedtest once i get back into the city (SF), but unfortunately in big cities the data demand is consistently high, so a boost may not be noticed, but I'm sure it'll increase data speed stability.
Looking good so far tho!

I'm not from LA, Just visiting. I'm getting 2 to 6Mbps here. I guess you could say that's not bad, but the answer to the OP question is I haven't noticed any increase in the last couple days. From what I have experienced, TMO is advertising "AMERICA's LARGEST 4G NETWORK" When actually its truly only a 3.5G network in selected markets neglecting the majority of the rest of the country and leaving us with an unreliable 2G network. At least some of the other providers can say they have a large portion of the country covered by at least 3G. TMO does have a good looking woman spouting their lies for them though.

thats a can that doesnt need to be opened. there is no "TRUE" 4G tech thats readily deployed right now.
I dont care what they call it. They can call its it worms for all i care lol. 4-10mbps is fast enough for any mobile application.
And last thing, all of these are theoretical speeds are in perfect conditions, no loads, etc. I dont think any of these supposed breakneck speeds VZ, ATT, Tmob, or Sprint advertises will actually happen in real world use. 42mbps? Yeah right TMob!! Ive never seen over 11mbps on TM or Sprint 4G.

the speeds at state are random - as backed up by Tmo's own coverage map. you're much better off testing it at Stones Town.

Funny thing is, started testing yesterday... They must have forgotten to do Chicago, even though it is listed. I'm right down town in the loop, at least my speeds are consistant... 1.09 down and 0.25 up. If anything, I am seeing a major speed de-crease. Hell, In naperville, IL, I have speed tests clocked from several months a go, 1 at 7.1 Mbps down and 3.4 Mbps up. Currently in naperville, tests range from 1 Mbps down all the way up to 7.3 Mbps down.
Chicago, no go. I sent tmo a tweet asking what the deal was and if they accidently included chicago in the list or if it is broken already... 24 hours later, they ignored the comment...probably because they know its true.
I love tmo...but seriously, whats with all they hype if theyre not gonna stand by it, everywhere mentioned in the press release.

HSPA+ 42 on Sensation?

This is probably a total noob question, but I'm curious: is there any hardware reason the HSPA+ transceiver on the Sensation can't be made to be compatible with T-mo's HSPA+ 42 network? I mean, are we theoretically only a hacked radio away from doubling our network speed, like the lucky SOBs getting the upcoming Amaze/SGS2 (kinda like how the Android Revolution ROM can unlock 1.5 GHz CPU speeds)?
Not possible my good sir. The radio in the Sensation is only capable of up to 14.4 Mbps.

Bah. Oh well, that's still five times faster than my home internet connection (well, 50 times faster than what it is currently; God I wish I could kick ATT to the curb as my DSL provider too! Their wireline customer service is almost as bad as their wireless was!)
Even if the Sensation was capable of 42meg 95% of users wouldnt get anywhere near that speed on that network anyway. Hell, how many of you get over 10 meg now?
The phones limit of 14meg will only become an issue when the networks theoretical max hits highs of well above 50meg.

Honestly, anything over 3-4Mb pipe is just extra. It's all you need to stream high quality video to the device with no lag. The only real reason you would need more is for speed test bragging or to run HDMI into your tv, but if you do that you'll use all your data up.
Technically we are lucky T-Mobile has only 3.5 G. My friends here in the U.S. with LTE get 10-20Mb connections (compared to my 6-10Mb) but it completely rapes their battery. We can run 3.5 G all day long but LTE guys need a recharge during the day.

Interesting about the battery drain on LTE.
I agree though, the network 'Three' here in the UK has just started rolling out HSPA+ (up to 21meg) recently and like yourself I now average 6-10Mb which is fast enough and my battery last all day easily.

That actually sounds like some kind of throttling going on, if speed tests and browsing are at much higher speeds than what you get downloading a file.
Thankfully I dont have that problem on the network I use, what you see is what you actually get!

200kb/s is the "speed" of your download and equals a 1.6Mb connection "bandwidth". Your bandwidth is listed in bits and your speed is listed in bytes. There are 8 bits in a byte. So multiply the "speed" you see by 8 to get your "bandwidth". Or divide your bandwidth by 8 to determine your download speed potential.
Make sense? Just remember to mult/div by 8.

Also, don't forget to get the case of you "b" (bits) and "B" (Bytes) correct. ;-)

HSPA+ 42mbps is actually DC-HSPA. It should operate nearly twice as fast as the current modems in real world conditions, as its operating on double frequency.
This is far different than a bump from 7.2 to 14.4. This will have real world impact in speeds.
Highest I've pulled in my area is 12mbps, which is plenty fast. Im not sure i understand the speed race going on between carriers at the moment since the data is either being capped or throttled. What would you do with 42 mbps and how long would your monthly data last, even with a dongle?
I didn't realize the Sensation was just 14.4mbs but that explains a lot. Highest I've ever gotten on the dl was 8.5mbs in Houston. Average though can be anywhere between 4.5 and 6.5. I'm pretty happy with it though. on the 10gig plan and I've used to to stream HD netflix to the bigscreen while tethered when there wasn't a faster connection available. Even gaming works fine with about 85-100 latency.
all i know it's much much faster than my flip dumb phone i had since like 2005 lmao i'm happy to be up to date finnaly lol
Only TMOUS supports HSPA+?

If you mean specifically in the US, no. AT&T uses HSPA+ too. They are also implementing LTE at this time too. Right now their HSPA+ is only capable of 21mbps while tmous is capable of 42mbps.
These are theoretical speeds of course, but faster the theoretical, faster the real world.

I'm wondering what your data speeds are like? I've been using the speed test app, and just recently I've been testing my connection everywhere I go. It's funny cause my ping is usually around 100-140, which I thought was relatively high, but then it comes in and gives me 5843kb/s download speed, but then my uploading speed is always horrible at around 600-800kb/s.
Is this normal for other Wind users?

Ping speeds and data throughput can cary based on any number of factors such as cell congestion, network data congestion for your carrier, distance from cell site or obstacles weakening the signal, etc. You have to test it every day over a month or so from various locations to see what is really going on with your carrier.
Testing right now, got:
239ms Ping
1.58 Mbps Down
0.09Mbps Up
4 bars too...
I'm in GTA. I guess Ottawa speeds just beat the crap out of us here..

This is typically what i get on a regular basis very rare will i ever even get 2+ Mbps down or anything higher than 0.15 Mbps up i think its a location issue though. I live in Scarborough and the reception here is still very unstable....certain places will be full bars and others none to no reception at all
I've gotten up to 9mbs download around Jane/Bloor area.
around 4-6mbs Yonge/Eg
and around 7-9mbs downtown depending on the hours
