Hey guys, quick question. I'm not that familiar with ROM development, so I turn to you. I highly doubt that we can count on sammy to develop gingerbread for us, so do we think that it will even be possible to port it? Reading design gears thread, it seems that he can't quite get true AOSP running on the captivate because of how heavily samsung has modified the OS, does this mean that we will never see sweet 3.0? If that's the case, than it might be time to sell and buy a nexus one...

this is a bump
Samsung-Firmwares posted this 8 hours ago:
"We got this information from our Samsung insiders. Samsung is also thinking about Android 3.0 for Galaxy S"
They also posted that Samsung is working on a new fw to be released in November...
COOL! Thanks so much for your reply, I would love to see an official release from samsung, although the november release is most likely froyo

The messed up thing is they shouldn't be 'thinking' about it. It should be a definite. This is supposed to be the best hardware ever released on a phone so there's no reason why it shouldn't be available. If its not, although i love the galaxy s, i will never buy another Samsung product in my life
*rubs crystal ball*
I see our xmas gift as Android 2.2...
And Easter of next year, Samsung makes an announcement that 3.0 is cominig to the Galaxy S phones in the US..

I'll wager they don't do this.I'll wager there will lots of happy Galaxy owners this time next year.We won't have the fastest phone..but we will have stable releases by Samsung..or the developers here will port it over anyways
Either way..it's going to be interesting to say the least for those of us that keep them

Its true, if this kind of hardware was an htc phone we'd be set until android 4.0 at least, also I bet anything that the evo gets 3.0 and thats an older phone than ours...i also wonder how far the nexus one will get updated...

That wasn't my experience with the HTC Touch HD which at the time was supposed to be the best of the best in hardware.
So, AndroidAndMe.com posted a rumor about Samsung is going to have a new Google-Experience phone running on new hardware (Tegra 2 based) and Gingerbread ready by the end of 2010.
There goes your dream any Galaxy S phones getting Generbread ever.
Why would you say that? Samsung released the Galaxy S to 4 carriers, and are DIRECTLY competing with Apple with hardware aimed at the iPad and even the iPod Touch! Why anyone would think Samsung would just drop a top of the line smartphone on us and hang us out to dry is very stupid, and not very thought out.
Samsung, if possible, WILL "think" about Gingerbread. And by "think" they don't mean mull it over some peanuts and beer, they mean QA, hardware analysis, software development. They didn't come along to latch a customer on for a year, they came on to steal the market from Apple, and the latest Beta Froyo should let you all know they're doing alot more than thinking about it.

Because I have owned 5 Samsung Smartphones and couple DVD players as well as their top of line Blu Ray players. And they did exactly like I said to every single product I purchased.
Samsung's market strategy is to blanket market with latest and greatest hardware every 6 months or so. Everything they released so far always have something unfinished or not working. By the time they fix all the issues, the existing product is discontinued and a new generation of the product is already on the market. And the cycle continues.
Problem with phones are the 2 year contract. If samsung just leaves everyone who bought a galaxy s phone out to dry, so much for potential sales for our next phone.
Anyways, since the galaxy tab will (?) receive gingerbread, i'm hopefull it will be on our phones, through samsung or xda.

i dont understand what this has to so with att? i keep on seeing the blame put on att but the vibrant doesnt have anything that the captivate doesn't have 'cept for hsupa. if the vibrant had froyo and plans for ginger bread then yeah i could see att getting thrown in but att doesnt decide the fate of the whole galaxy s line. froyo is coming, gingerbread might be or might not be, i have a fealing that froyo will be realesed on the whole galaxy s usa line about the same time, and they may be holding back on the gsm phones untill it is ready for the cdma phones which will take longer as there are more differences in hardware for the epic and fascinate. i have an aquaintance at samsung who is a senior engineer for the cdma phones. he cant give me details but in general he said they are working around the clock on the froyo update and there shouldn't be an unusually long wait. for what ever that's worth. i dont know about gingerbread but i can only hope.

I was screwed by Sony when I sent my Unlocked Xperia X10 in for repair and they sent me a Brand New phone, but it's locked to Rogers and can't get an unlock code anywhere for it. So I took the opportunity to get a new phone. I picked the Infuse up at Amazon last week for $129. I waited very impatiently to get it today and I have to say this phone is ridiculous! I can't get over the screen and how fast it is. I have no regrets at all and will be a proud owner for a very long time I'm sure. Next comes rooting it and throwing Infused on it possibly. Have a good one guys!

Yeah sony needs to think long and hard about their product road map. Their cell phones are so late to the game. Doesn't bring any UI that is truly exceptional. I was a hardcore SE fan, but the Xperia X1 was such a turn off.... I love the Sony build quality but avast the software is lacking.... ((
I really like their Design of the Arc, but probably updates are far and nothing in between.... sad....
But totally glad you joined the Galaxy S class!

The phone has been out less than a month. It is also possible we will not see as many developers as a more Samsung flagship phone like Galaxy S, Galaxy S II. But I am sure we will have enough developer support to make it much better than stock. It is already better than stock with the few ROM's we have now. Custom kernel's will be a huge bonus. One developer here already said he is working on that.

yeah they will likely release the attain before they consider gb on the infuse and captivate, it is a shame because samsung clearly can deliver it if they had control over the release schedules. hopefully the nexus s 4g and evo2/evo3d will entice them to release gb slightly earlier. att would be soo much better if they had some real competition in america. t-mo is too small in america and the nexus isnt a big enough seller, verizon doesnt get updates for samsung, they manage to be slower than att in that area and motorola doesnt have an official gb on any platform that i know of yet (driox2? maybe havent looked into it) i think for att to get there act together and deliver updates when they are available from the manufacturers it will take sprint to release gb on the evo/evo2 since that phone is soo well recognised. untill there is some outside competition they will hold back updates to artificially inflate the value of the next big phones

I haven't been following the for and against arguments for this but my first thought is that it will raise prices across the board. Eliminating the carriers that offer more inexpensive options can't be good for consumers.
I doubt it will raise prices for att customers, we'll just get better service, and an actual lte rollout. Tmobile customers are the ones who are getting screwed.

This is Samsung's proprietary filesystem, isn't it? I believe they use it on all of their devices that require a filesystem. It's sad that the software developers working for Samsung didn't stop to think that a FAT based filesystem (RFS) might not be the best option for their Android based devices.

We only have about 6 or 8 leaks for new firmware on a pretty regular release schedule and an att announcement that we get GB in 2011 and several threads showing the infuse as a top seller but we get responses like these.

So, we are 99% sure that we will get it. LOL At least by early to mid January, right.
But seriously, I hear you Dani, I love my phone and can't understand why since the SG2 and Nexus and Atrix are out suddenly people call ours ****e? It is annoying. Our phone is top quality.
Besides, after reading the discussion in the leak threads about how the video issue came up with all of the modded kernels and most importantly the assumption that AT&T developers care about what we do here at the forums so much that they use us as guinea pigs(in a good way) they stopped releasing leaks until they were ready for the official, I just took those words for GOLD and decided we are waiting. Was I wrong?

1) Yes, AT&T Doesn't give a damn about firmware updates.
2) The Infuse sold extremely well.
3) I've seen very little advertising on the Skyrocket, yet continue to see ads for the Infuse (as recently as this past week on TV and yesterday in a target flyer.)
I've decided I can live with the ROMS in our forums here and AT&T can kiss my shiny metal arse.
Well, not sure if this is any indication, but my local Walmart is selling infuse cases, as well as screen protectors, while there is nothing on the SGSII or Skyrocket. Honestly I think Samsung is spewing out more expensive versions of practically the same phone, and the Infuse is the OG in this siuation. *thinks of carbon copying phones, and sees a conspiracy theory!*
Since I follow these forums as well as the Xperia Play forums, my hypothesis is:
-They were testing GB
-They LOLragequit and decided to make all newer android phones upgradeable to ICS
-they plan on releasing ICS in January or February.
I know these are some out-there speculations, but AT&T tends to send firmware updates in batches, and it has been confirmed by Sony Ericsson that they are planning on ICS for the Play by February 2012.
Just my 2 cents on the matter.
What I think is that as usual att is behind schedule. Maybe Samsung put us off while developing a whole new line. Either way I doubt we will see official this month. but the idea we will never see it is just ignoring the evidence. They wouldn't be working on it so aggressively if they didn't intend to release it. Also since att probably only wanted one update the wait is kinda a good thing since we'll get at least 2.3.6 and not 2.3.3 like Rogers got.
I honestly don't think we will see gb officially. Bit I have had gingerbread on my phone for a while now
E3D
I think the Infuse is a decent phone.
Already fast.
Dual core means didily squat...to me, it a phone. If you want fast, get a tablet or netbook or laptop.
4.5" is just right in my back pocket or breast pocket.
GB leak is prob near completion.
I'm expecting a OTA within a month or two.
If it doesn't, UCKK4 stock is fine for me as well.
Some of the tweaks added to CatyROM (acid, thunderbolt or adrenaline) or some we can add ourselves may be better than the release....unless samsung has been follow the threads and incorporate them into the new release.
my2cents...
my next phone should have a neuro connection I can jam into my brain. It'll be instant like my thoughts. It'll run off my stored fat. And I will be assimilated

Right after the iPhone, and it would still be if it weren't for the new models.
What people don't seem to get, is that AT&T is also deving for the phone, they encounter the same issues that our devs encounter. Bluetooth issues, HDMI output, the only difference is that they are "Official Updates" because they are carrier released.
The only good conclusion about no leaks, is that it got it's kinks worked out and its in the final stages of testing to make sure no kinks were left untreated.

This could be very true. remember the backflip, that thing got its update to 2.1 like 4 months after it was planned. and to be honest, AT&T never said by years end. it said is 2011 android line will expect to receive gingerbread.
I quote
Upgrade Details
Customers who purchased an Android smartphone from AT&T introduced in 2011 can expect to receive an update to Android 2.3. All of these devices are planned to be upgraded from Android 2.2 to Android 2.3, also referred to as Gingerbread. In addition, Samsung Captivate™ owners will be able to upgrade to Gingerbread.

Samsung has been great about updating that device. Not getting gingerbread for those u.s. Phones is a carrier issue.
This is a manufacturer "retiring" a product. Which they are only required by google to keep the phones up to date 18 months after release. So this makes perfect sense.
I've read some conflicting reports that Samsung Galaxy S will be updated. Even if they don't were already using it, so big deal. The Nexus S has identical hardware to the Galaxy S variants except the Qualcomm (S plus)and TI (i9003)based ones. It wouldn't be unreasonable to expect them to repeat what they've already done for the same hardware
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Samsung-Galaxy-S-and-Galaxy-Tab-not-getting-ICS_id25061
Well looks like you were right and touchwiz is to blame. More reason why custom overlays should be abandoned for the sake of faster updates. Why they can't give pure ICS I don't understand!!?? ICSSGS RC1.0.1 is running buttery smooth on my phone so no biggie but so many people will miss out and its a shame. HTC claimed they couldn't put Sense 3.0 on the older devices and they recently updated the Desire HD and Incredible S so Samsung might change their minds and find a way to make it work after all Sony Ericsson are doing it on their phones.

They did - press release is here http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/att-customers-to-enjoy-gingerbread-126113088.html
Sad, would be nice if Samsung would release source code and let the developer community proceed with a full set of tools. Most caps are out of warranty anyway, and the ICSSGS and teamhacksung builds seem to be progressing nicely, but if Samsung could help them avoid any pitfalls on the way to release, would be an easy way for them to get goodwill.
---------- Post added at 10:25 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:32 AM ----------
One more thought, is the "Samsung is going to participate and collaborate with the XDA community, i.e., the SamsungJohn experiment, still around."
Seems like this would be the perfect out; Samsung provides source and tools to allow developers to build Nexus S equivalent ROMs for the Cap and other Galaxy S variants, and interested developers take it from there. Would be a great way for them to gain goodwill.
Yeah I don't understand why they keep the drivers closed source I mean a bug free cyanogenmod with awesome battery life sure would be nice since I can't even get a legit gingerbread update from at&t.

It's not like this is really going to stop XDA from delivering a good ICS port anyways. It is absurd though, given that even the first few months of Captivates are still not eligible for an upgrade.
But AT&T needs to be held accountable, along with anyone else who is delaying releasing a ROM on good timely manner. Also Samsung released KK4 AT&T stock ROM source code

Don't bet on it. The 18 month pledge only applied to phones released after Google IO in 2011. I think it's safe to assume that no Galaxy S versions will get an official ICS from Samsung. CM9 is probably the best bet.
I really don't know why anyone cares is this any surprise? Aren't we all here mainly for custom roms anyway? All and all 18 months of support is pretty good and there is nothing in it for Samsung to give it to us anyway. Most people have already moved on, and if you haven't your probably out of warrenty so put a custom roms on, otherwise your probably close to the end of your contract or at least an early upgrade.
I don't think touchwiz is to blame here, I think that was just a pr move as they've already been under fire over updates anyway. I still wonder if we're getting gingerbread, I mean we've had leaked official roms since June, I almost think at&t doesn't want to waste the server bandwidth

Two words: Kernel Source.

Seems the rumor mill has started about Samsung retracting their decision because of consumer demand.
Grain of salt as it's unconfirmed, but still...
I happily returned my Craptivate in only two weeks.
So much happier on an Htc Thunderbolt with open GB Rom. Night and day. I wanted to love the Sammy, but couldn't.

So back in December, Samsung stated that ICS would be available for Galaxy devices in Q1 2012 (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2397850,00.asp - among other sources).
Someone asked on Facebook when the update for the Galaxy Nexus S was coming and Samsung stated that "ICS updates for Galaxy devices will be available in early Q2." (https://www.facebook.com/samsungmobilecanada/posts/10150560045396050)...
Idk, that may be a bit different because the Nexus S is in the original Galaxy S family. Those are going to be updated after all the Galaxy S2 devices. They actually weren't even going to release the update for those phones initially.

Some rumors said march first, which would be q1 and not going to happen. Some leaked document i saw said april which would be early q2. God knows what they are doing over there. I want aosp/cm9 anyway, but if they release ics it might help get us closer.
I am so sick of this too.....
From now on I am only getting Nexus Devices
I'm sick of it too, but used to it. They just released official Gingerbread for the Captivate (my previous phone) a few weeks ago after XDA users had been running leaked versions for several months. But the devs here on XDA already have (as I understand it) some pretty kickass ICS roms available for the Captivate.
Don't hold your breath waiting for AT&T/Samsung. We'll have ICS here on XDA long before they make it officially available (but...without a secure element we won't be able to use Google Wallet--not sure how they're going to solve that one...re-issued sim cards maybe?)
Sounds like it's all Galaxy devices:

That being said, I wasn't holding my breath either for an official release but figured when one came it might help speed up some things here on XDA or for the CM guys.
And yeah, I was running ICS on my Cappy for a couple months before it died (needed a new mobo so the cost of upgrading to the SGS II LTE was actually cheaper than the repair on my Cappy - go figure)... the official Samsung/Rogers upgrade cycle on the Cappy was horrendous as well, bought it with Froyo, an hour later had CM7 on it, and it wasn't long afte they updated officially to GB that I was running TeamHacksung ICS alpha builds on it.
We'll be lucky to get official ICS before Jellybean is released
That is Samsung mobile Canada stating that. So may be different for us in the states. But what I think is funny is the vivid is getting the update soon, and if I'm not wrong both phones came out on the same day. So no blaming this on the carrier this time. Damn Sammy LOL.

True, it is Samsung Mobile Canada - I wasn't expecting us (or the US) to get it in Q1 anyways (officially) as the original statement I believe was for the international versions of the Galaxy S II/Note. Still, was hoping that the international stock rom would help jump/fix kinks some of the developers here are trying to overcome.
I'm in Canada, so I can only hope

To clarify, they only said the international versions of the S II and the Note would get it in Q1. The others that were announced to get ICS have never been given a time frame, other than that they would follow those two.
There seems to be a lot of confusion on that point.

Yes, I do understand that fully. Not holding my breath that the international version will be rolling out any time soon either.
Looking into the dev forum there are two promising roms one in alpha 1 with basic functions working and another one that the mods and the dev keep fighting over is a lot further along but I think was taken down again :-(. I'm guessing we have about a month maybe a bit more before we have some awesome functioning ics rom's

Well Q1 is still not done with, we got a whole month for them to hopefully release.
technicalities... Huge companies always drag there feet, I almost guarantee the skyrocket dev community will have ics before everyone else
ICS is ready for deployment, Samsung is waiting for approval from Google.

He's probably right, if the galaxy nexus has it, with an SOC which isn't so dissimilar to ours, they're probably sitting on it. I was also over in the t989 forum and it was stated the kang Juggernaut devs got an ics samsung release leak but are sitting on it as well. If they have it, guarantee for our phones its done
I'm not doubting if someone can back it up but thats the dudes first post not very reputable

I was just speaking in common sensical terms lol, but yeah, first post is kinda shaddy if he meant it as a concrete statement. He has been lurking since July though
From Eldar tweet:
"Eldar Murtazin@eldarmurtazin
ICS update on the way for SGS2 9at least in Russia) - Samsung ready to deliver it and waiting for Google approval only (from Feb, 21)"
