AT&T wouldn't give me the unlock code??? - Motorola Atrix 2

So this is weird...
I travel out of the country a lot for work, so I called AT&T asking for the unlock code and their response was "Sorry the Atrix 2 is an AT&T Exclusive, and we see that you just renewed your contract yesterday, so we can't provide you with the code"
I'm very confused? I've been an AT&T customer for a number of years - NEVER been late on a payment, and I JUST renewed my contract for 2 years. I don't have any plans of leaving AT&T, so I don't get whats going on?
I see that I can buy the unlock code for $25, but I figured AT&T would be cooperative with this? Any ideas or experience guys?
Thanks!

They won't give anyone an unlock code, but you can buy one off ebay cheap enough or other websites. They want to sell you international travel plans, not allow you to use a sim card for that country!

According to this original Atrix thread, people were calling and AT&T was giving them the unlock code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1288194

AT&T will give you the unlock code .. you must have the phone in your possession for 6 months from the time you renewed.

And this is to unlock the bootloader?

Believe he is talking about the sim unlock

iirc you gotta wait 30 days after getting the phone to have it unlocked (or was that t-mobile?)

Many thanks!
I had asked for it and was told no, but I'll try again in 6 months. I travel and having the sim unlocked is what I need. You saved me some cash, thanks!

Thanks guys! Six months seems like an awfully long time LOL whatever, guess I just have to wait!

You do NOT have to wait 6 months, you have to wait 30 DAYS. They don't want you unlocking the phone inside of the 30 day window. So wait 30 days and call back. If you get a no, hang up and call back in 15 minutes until you get a yes.

Go find unlock seller on ebay
You can search ebay for " motorola atrix 2 unlock " or " atrix 2 unlock " you will find alot of sellers that can sell you the code for around $20

purchase g2x from T-mobile for AT&T

If I purchase the g2x from T-mobile without being a t-mobile customer, will they provide an unlock code?
Go to the store and ask or call them and ask, best way to get solid answers

I think the phone has to be in service for either 60 or 90 days (don't remember which) and then they'll give you the unlock code. You have to tell them you're traveling internationally. It takes about 24 hours from the time of the request for HTC phones and the code is sent in an e-mail. I just got the code for my G2 which I'm selling to get a G2X. The code for the G2X has to come from LG so I don't know what their turn around time is.

I've heard if you've been a customer for (60-90? days), even prepaid, they'll give you an unlock code even on a freshly purchased phone. I've got a T-Mo prepaid card that I keep afloat with minimum top-ups for my trips to the US, so if I do buy the G2x or another T-Mo phone I should be able to get the unlock from them.
I thought it was mandatory now. If you ask for the unlock code, they have to give it to you regardless. Guess I was wrong?
Anyone here work at t-mobile that can give any solutions to non t-mobile customers who don't want to open an account?
I suspect this device is carrier locked, but I would buy one if I could confirm that I could use it on AT&T out of the box.

I have another question for Non-T-Mobile (AT&T) people.
My question is how compatible is the G2X going to be with AT&T's "4G"?
Also I am currently using Nexus One AT&T 3G, but I am thinking that I should be able to change that to the 4G service without altering my contract, or loosing grandfathered "unlimited data plan"?
Any input or info much appriciated

T-Mobile isn't in the business of selling phones. They'll only sell you a phone in conjunction with a pre- or post-paid wireless plan. As someone said, out of the box the phone is locked to T-Mobile. You can request an unlock code after 60 or 90 days of maintaining an account in good standing.

why don't you wait until after the 20th and most likely you will find them online unlocked..just like the t-mobile sg vibrant
I have a friend on t-mobile. Can he call them up and request sim unlock codes?
I am also in this situation but I prefer not to buy from ebay. What about unlocking services? Do they permanently unlock the phone? Does flashing a different ROM on the phone affect the unlock?

Cant get it right away, but I am sure it will be available soon.

I believe the G2X is unlocked out of box I got to review the device today and it has at&t options under network settings like the Nexus One.
If you purchase out right you can get code immediately (meaning requesting the code). If its an upgrade/new activation must wait until buyers remorse is up and not be past due or had an unlock code in last 90 days. I'm not at work now but that's the policy, I believe not sure if its 90 or 60 though can't remember. Hope this helps

I've been asking around and several people have informed me that if you purchase the phone for full retail, t-mobile will provide you with an unlock code. I also found this on wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIM_lock#United_States
"One of the two national GSM carriers, T-Mobile,[43] will unlock handsets for those with active account in good standing for at least 40 days and no unlock code request in the last 90 days. T-Mobile will also unlock a phone if the full retail price is paid and proof of purchase is provided through a faxed document. "

Sorry to inform you, but you need to brush up on your company's policies.
I just got off of the phone with t-mobile customer care (1-877-453-1304). I called them because I wanted clarification on this before I purchased 2 full retail price phones.
The program is called the "Sim Subsidy Unlock Program." It is for anyone that purchases a phone for the full retail price from a corporate store or an authorized retailer and pays all of the price upfront.
You need to call customer care, explain that you purchased a phone for full price and request a "remedy request form number." They will then open this request and you then have 7 days to fax the following to the Sim Unlock Team at 1-813-353-6557 :
ATTENTION: SIM UNLOCK TEAM
Full Name
Mobile Number
Email Address
Readable Copy Of Sales Receipt
It takes 24 to 72 hours to process and they will email you instructions to unlock your phone.
Yeah, if you bought the phone full price, then you will not be required to wait any time to unlock the phone. The 3g and 4g frequency will not work well, or at all, because the phone uses 1700 and 2100 for 3g and 4g. The 1700 frequency is exclusive to T-Mobile.

Any 1 can provide LG G2X Unlock Code ?

Any 1 knows from where i can get lg g2x unlock code ? i am new here waiting for your response ....
why not call/email T-mobile?
It depends. If you bought it directly from a T-Mobile store you can call them up or email them for the unlock code. They'll ask you for a proof of purchase. If you don't have an account with T-Mobile, AND you purchase it at some other retailer they won't give you the unlock code. This happened to me. T-Mo absolutely refused to honour my purchase through amazon, add that to the fact that I don't have a number with T-Mo, they were very stubborn to not give me the code, even though I bought it for full price.
So, I went online an purchased a code from unlockthatphone.com It's like $15 added to $510 (no tax+free shipping) from Amazon I thought it was a pretty good deal too.

Actually if you pay full price they won't even wait for three months, you'll get it immediately. My problem is that I don't have an account with T-Mo at all. I'm moving out of the US, and the O2X costs way more than the G2X.

Unlocking help required from existing T-Mobile customers for HTC Sensation

Hi,
I bought a T-Mobile locked HTC Sensation from the ebay. I wanted to get it unlocked from T-Mobile, but they will provide me the unlocking code for the mobile, unless I have an activated line from them. I found the following from the T-Mobile website, and need somebody who is a T-Mobile USA customer to help me out with this. If you are willing to help, send me a PM. I will send you the IMIE number, which could be used to get the unlocking code from T-Mobile.
SIM Unlock Code
For information on the SIM Unlock Code, refer to the following:
If you purchased a wireless phone from T-Mobile, your phone has been programmed with a SIM lock which will prevent the phone from operating with other compatible wireless telephone carrier’s services. If you wish to use the phone with the service of another wireless telephone carrier, you must enter a numeric SIM Unlock Code to unlock the phone.
For customers with a T-Mobile Postpaid Plan, T-Mobile will provide the SIM Unlock Code upon request to eligible customers, provided the requesting customer has a minimum of 40 days of active service with T-Mobile.
For customers with a T-Mobile Prepaid Plan, T-Mobile will provide the SIM Unlock Code upon request to eligible customers, provided the requesting customer has a minimum of 60 days of active service with T-Mobile and either a Prepaid Plan account balance of at least $10.00 or a prior refill within the last 30 days.
T-Mobile will provide the SIM Unlock Code upon request to eligible former customers, provided that T-Mobile has such code or can obtain it from the manufacturer.
You may request the SIM Unlock Code for your phone, together with instructions for entering the code, by calling T-Mobile customer care at 1-800-937-8997.
i dont know if they do it but have you try calling htc? also i think there are sites that sell the unlock codes.
I tried for the past week to unlock via T-Mobile. Complete waste of my time. Too many wasted hours on the phone with them. And I WAS eligible!
I ended up buying mine for $25 from htcimeiunlock.com received it 10 minutes later and all was well.

I work in tech care myself and would like to clear something up. T-Mobile does not have unlock codes, period. IF you are eligible (must have an account obviously), your IMEI and account info gets sent to an unlock team, and they get the code directly from the manufacturer. It's not like they have the code ready and said "Go F yourself" lol.
What reason do they have to unlock a phone that is so new they obviously did not recuperate their subsidy yet and for someone who hasn't paid a dime worth of fees.

Not everyone has purchases their phones on contract. Some people buy them outright... and prefer them sim unlocked for traveling with.
I am one of those few people who do just that. T-mobile told me that I need to wait 60 days between time of purchase and sim unlock... Or I could get it done by a third party, usually $25 to do. Google "sim unlock htc sensation"
@stoneyjonez : Ok.. got you. Can you tell me if they would give me the unlock code if a person with a T-Mobile account ( long standing ) and asked them for the unlock code ? Obviously that person wouldnt have bought the phone directly from them
cellunlocker . net I recommend currently only 19.99 for unlock code and takes up to 3 hours
In the past I tried to get a Motorola ROKR E8 unlocked through them. I was eligible and they said they would submit something to whoever they have to submit it to. I tried 3 times and never heard back from anyone. Phone was never unlocked :-(
I would just go online and pay for one, you get way better service that way. Its not like $25 is a big spend compared to the retail cost of the phone your unlocking.
Thanks for all your responses folks !! In my opinion its a bit dodgy to send money to anybody on the net. I have read too many stories where the money is gone but no unlock code. But I can take the recommendations given by others and buy from a reliable service..
Usually yes...if you give your imei to a T-mobile customer they will give them the unlock code for it.
Here is what happened when I sold my Vibrant after buying my new Sensation: I requested the unlock code from t-mo, they replied in 24 hours that the phone would not be unlocked due to it not being the current phone on the network for my account. (I then unlocked the Vibrant by rooting it and using an unlock method via adb)
So I am guessing that a t-mo customer would not be able to help out, since the phone would not be on the network.
From what I have read on the internet, if you tell them that you are travelling internationally and would like to use a local sim, they give you the unlock code. Also, see my first post where I have posted the rules specified on the T-Mob website for requesting a unlock code and the guidelines they use for qualification of a customer.
i use my sensation on the network and so i called in to request my unlock code..they did all the button pushing on their side and said i will get an email within 72 hours with the unlock stuff...will post when i get it or what i get.

Wind wants $10 for unlock code

Well, WIND are beginning to scare me. Before, when I needed my BB unlocked, it was as easy as sending them an email. Now, I need the G2x unlock code, not only I have to call them, but also to pay $10.
WTH? I'm still not that poor, but there's a matter of principle here - I have the phone, I'm paying for it since the beginning, I feel like someone is getting money for nothing. Would you pay if you were in my case?

When I signed up I was told that after 3 months WIND would supply the unlock code at no cost. I didn't want to wait 3 months so I paid for an unlock code. Here's where you can get an unlock code for 99 cents US through an Ebay seller: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Unlock-Code...s=63&clkid=2846801209278919181#ht_2270wt_1037
Make sure that you give the correct numbers because, if there's an error, the unlock code won't work and there's a limited number of attempts allowed before the phone is hard-locked so that it will never be able to be unlocked from WIND.
WIND's customer service totally sucks.

AT&T won't give us unlock codes for our One X

Just wanted to inform everyone that AT&T won't give us unlock codes to use our phones with an international sim while traveling until 11/06.
I bought my phone on May 6 2012 (launch day). So maybe they added a 5 month waiting period?
Not sure what to do now other than paying the $5-10 to get it unlocked unofficially. Any recommendations for sources would be great.
This might be an HTC thing. My friend just bought his samsung galaxy s3 and he had no problems getting an unlock code within 2 weeks of purchasing. I know with my previous HTC phone (windows phone) i also had to wait to get it unlocked.
Thanks a lot HTC. Another thing you and AT&T screw us over with.
What would be the difference unlocking with 3rd party paying 10 bucks?

The official AT&T unlock policy is:
(1) on contract for at least 90 days
(2) Account in good standing
On top of that, almost all the new AT&T smart phones, not just HTC phones, now come with so-called exclusive period which starts from the day the phone was released and typically ends at 6-month mark or later. During this period, you won't be able to get the unlock code.
HTC One X isn't the first phone to have this policy and won't the last.
Must be an individual account thing, because my friend got his gs3 unlock code 2 weeks after buying.
I was able to get my GS2 unlocked the day I bought it (no contract price) but others are not so lucky. AT&T has all the code. They just don't want to give them out per AT&T policy unless you met a helpful or clueless CSR.
If AT&T refuses to give you a code for what ever reason, you can PM me, I'll give you the code.
