A friend of mine has an Epic 4G with most of the bloatware removed. He wants to know if he can OTA update without unrooting while the carrier specific apps are still gone?
I apologize in advance if there is a similar thread. It was not suggested to me
The update will probably fail if apk's have been removed. I remember that being the case when everybody was waiting for the Gingerbread OTA.

If I root my MyTouch and run the stock ROM that is posted here about 40 mb will I still get the ota updates then since the spl and recovery will be different.
id like to know this as well, but also for us who are running custom ROMS such as Cyanogens ROM
will we still get OTA updates?
Sorry everyone this was a really dumb question especially for me as I already know that answer. The MyTouch once is rooted will NOT get OTA updates since the keys will not match at all. You will not get any updates on the stock rom and espcially not on a modified firmware version

well that stinks, how will we update our phones when new updates to the Android OS come out? manually update/flash the ROMS again?
it does not "stink" not getting otas keeps us from getting our root taken away and our handsets re-lockdown'd.
hang out here and when an ota comes out, it gets modded and available for update.
HAHA, man what are those guys doing in this forum?
you got me.....haha........

That's the reason/joy for root...
Start asking your questions in the right sub-forum (Q&A) (Theme) or even in (General), or i will be forced to ban you for 3 days or till you learn.
Thanks
Thread Trashed!!
I'd LOVE to root my new Captivate to enable side loading and removal of AT&T bloatware... but my only concern is with OS updates from Samsung afterwards... Since there hasn't been one yet I suppose it's hard to answer the question, but if I root are/will Android updates (like when Froyo is released for it) (be) safe after rooting?

Doh! Sorry I missed that... thank you for the heads up.
The Asian WWE for Gingerbread DesireHD was released a few weeks ago and just yesterday the Telus Gingerbread OTA update went out so it is likely that we'll see a US AT&T Gingerbread update for the Inspire very soon.
Now the caution:
So far, there is no known way to get root once these updates are installed. HTC has officially announced that they plan to make their ROMs more open in the future, but, since these updates are already in the pipeline and being pushed to other markets, it may be awhile before official HTC policy catches up with ROMs in the wild. The current crop of ROMs, if installed via OTA updates, will LOCK YOUR DEVICE against being able to root. Until devs figure out how to work around the holes HTC has plugged, DON'T APPLY ANY OTA UPDATES!
This only applies to users of stock roms on non-S-OFF devices. If you already are rooted with S-OFF, then you probably are running a custom ROM and don't have to worry. Even if you are running a relatively stock ROM with S-OFF, you'll probably be OK, but if you have yet to root your device, BEWARE; don't accept any OTA updates until devs have figured this out.

Dought we will have to worry about this as ATT will have to approve of it first and it will be awhile before that happens. After talking to a few old friends it will be a few months till we see the update.
Why would anyone with a rooted Inspire want to get the OTA update anyways? There are plenty of roms out there that already have Gingerbread that don't make you wait for it.. Maybe I am missing something.
Well, those people don't have to worry since the OTA update will most likely fail, but if you aren't rooted and apply an update like these, then you won't have the option to root anymore (until and if devs come up with a solution).
Zelendel is probably right though about AT&T dragging their feet on this one. It probably won't be an issue for months.
I've a Galaxy S3 locked to T-Mobile UK. Model number is GT-19300, currently running Android 4.0.4.
T-Mobile UK have removed the OTA update functionality and i'm impatient, and want to upgrade to JellyBean.
I'm fairly new to all of this, but have some experience of rooting and flashing from an old HTC Hero.
I don't want to change to a differently themed ROM and don't care for all the different features that rooting would bring to the phone. I would just like to flash the bog-standard Samsung UK S3 ROM so I don't have the T-Mobile OTA update lock on there.
Is this possible to do? To restore the phone to an unlocked state, capable of obtaining updates without all the bloatware T-Mobile will put on when they finally release their JellyBean update. If so, i'd appreciate it if somebody could point me in the right direction of a ROM.
Apologies if what i'm asking isn't clear, as I say, i'm fairly new to it all!
Many thanks.
Hi, i own galaxy note LTE N7105, and decided I want to root. one thing though that bugs me, is people complaining over inability to update to new official OTA updates, since I want to keep my Note up to date with the manufacturer, I would really liked it if I can update.
Also, I want to root without flashing custom firmware. Can it be possible? Thank you.
edit : I own non carrier phones, So it is not locked.
