The Asian WWE for Gingerbread DesireHD was released a few weeks ago and just yesterday the Telus Gingerbread OTA update went out so it is likely that we'll see a US AT&T Gingerbread update for the Inspire very soon.
Now the caution:
So far, there is no known way to get root once these updates are installed. HTC has officially announced that they plan to make their ROMs more open in the future, but, since these updates are already in the pipeline and being pushed to other markets, it may be awhile before official HTC policy catches up with ROMs in the wild. The current crop of ROMs, if installed via OTA updates, will LOCK YOUR DEVICE against being able to root. Until devs figure out how to work around the holes HTC has plugged, DON'T APPLY ANY OTA UPDATES!

Dought we will have to worry about this as ATT will have to approve of it first and it will be awhile before that happens.After talking to a few old friends it will be a few months till we see the update.
Why would anyone with a rooted Inspire want to get the OTA update anyways? There are plenty of roms out there that already have Gingerbread that don't make you wait for it.. Maybe I am missing something.
Well, those people don't have to worry since the OTA update will most likely fail, but if you aren't rooted and apply an update like these, then you won't have the option to root anymore (until and if devs come up with a solution).
Zelendel is probably right though about AT&T dragging their feet on this one. It probably won't be an issue for months.

If I root my MyTouch and run the stock ROM that is posted here about 40 mb will I still get the ota updates then since the spl and recovery will be different.
id like to know this as well, but also for us who are running custom ROMS such as Cyanogens ROM

Sorry everyone this was a really dumb question especially for me as I already know that answer. The MyTouch once is rooted will NOT get OTA updates since the keys will not match at all. You will not get any updates on the stock rom and espcially not on a modified firmware version

well that stinks, how will we update our phones when new updates to the Android OS come out? manually update/flash the ROMS again?
it does not "stink" not getting otas keeps us from getting our root taken away and our handsets re-lockdown'd.
hang out here and when an ota comes out, it gets modded and available for update.

Should I root my phone first before upgrading to 2.2 or upgrade first then root?
If you're talking about the Over The Air (OTA) update that was announced, you should only upgrade with that if you don't want to root or customize anymore. For the moment, that OTA will take away root if you have it and you won't be able to get it back (for now).
If you're talking about upgrading to 2.2 using one of the ROMs posted here on XDA, then you need to root your phone in order to have the option to flash one of those onto your Aria.

Thanks that was very helpful! I'm going to root first them upgrade with one of the 2.2 ROMs here. I didn't know an OTA 2.2 update was out for the Aria already.
Well, it is and it isn't... it's available for non-branded Arias. AT&T hasn't released their version of the 2.2 update for the Aria, but when they do it will break your root access if you install it. At least temporarily. There's really no reason to use the official updates unless you need to return your Aria for some reason. Otherwise, you'll have more features using the custom ROMs here.

No since this is an HTC Sense ROM, it still uses HTC Flash Lite just like the original ROM did. The Aria processor is not currently supported by Adobe Flash 10.x.
ok so I got a question. I have an ATT aria can I get the HTC 2.2 rom on my phone and then root my phone?
No, at the moment you can't. If you install the HTC OTA update you will lose root and be unable to get it back until one of the devs figures it out again. There are, however, plenty of Froyo ROMs to choose from, so you really don't need the HTC update to get 2.2.

What's the best ROM out there right now? Which one would you recommend?
Currently, the two Froyo (Android 2.2) contenders for the Aria are CyanogenMod 6.1 and Liberated FR008.
Cyanogen offers a more unedited Android product with access to all sorts of settings and customization options. Liberated is more of a stock HTC Sense version of Android. Both ROMs are pretty much the creation of XDA member Attn1 who spends a ton of time developing for the Aria and here on the boards answerings questions.
The cool thing is that once you have rooted your Aria and installed Clockwork Mod Recovery, you can make a Nandroid back-up which will save your current setup along with all of your settings so that you can freely install these ROMs knowing that you can always safely return to your back-up if you don't like it. It's very... liberating!

You might want to wait a few days in the hope of an offiicial announcement from HTC.
Although a few users have already received an OTA update already in the last few days, most of us (I think) haven't.
A lot of people have been asking HTC on facebook about the update and HTC are being utterly non-comittal about it with just a stock answer.
If the official update doesn't appear within a time frame that you like, there is always great support right here to load a custom ROM.

I was rooted but then i unrooted because of ics.. update.i like the custom roms and all but my question is. will i have to wait for motorola to upgrade to ics? and then roms will come out meaning i have to be unrooted and factory sealed.or will i have to wait for the nexus to come out so they can port the source to the xoom? meaning i have to be root and in someones custom rom.
ICS will be open source, so custom roms will probably start pouring out in November because I'm pretty sure Google won't release the source until they release the first ICS devices. I would bet anything that Motorola updates us, eventually, though, it's more likely that custom ICS roms will be available first which will at least require clockwork recovery and unlocking the bootloader.

Based on what various tech blogs have reported, Google will release the ICS source a couple weeks after the Galaxy Nexus comes out, so mid- to late November is a good bet for when custom ROMs will start showing up. And "pouring out" is probably a good description for what will happen, seeing as it's a brand-new version of Android and everyone will have ideas on things to tweak
If you are waiting around for an ICS OTA update, you might want to just reroot and install a custom rom and enjoy your Xoom to the fullest while you wait...it will be a little while.

Well, since I'm a first time smartphone user, I asked in that thread that since my G3 was now rooted if I should accept OTA updates in the future, to which one person told me no. Last night I got a notification that my phone wanted to update to Jelly Bean, so now I'm not sure what to do. I don't accept the update because it will brick my phone, right? And if that's the case, where do I download a rooted version of Jelly Bean for it? (I searched this forum but couldn't really find anything other than people's custom versions, like Slimbean). I'm really confused with all the different rom versions available for the different carriers and models, though I suspect I can only use one for Verizon. Side question too - "rooted" is a modified version of an official OS release, right? It's not a method of installing an OS, it's an actual modified version, right? And if I want Jelly Bean, I have to continue using these modified versions, right?

Jellybean has not been officially released in any capacity to the Verizon GSIII. The update you see is roughly 30mb at the most, it's an incremental update at best from when you purchased the phone. No, it will not brick your phone. If you have a custom recovery then the update will fail. If you do not have a custom recovery then the update will unroot and unlock the bootloader and install successfully. We're months away from a Verizon update to Jellybean.

Download custom roms from the development section. Only flash roms for the Verizon GSIII aka d2vzw. These custom roms are people's different versions of the software available for our phone either officially or in jellybean's case unofficially.
Side question too - "rooted" is a modified version of an official OS release, right? It's not a method of installing an OS, it's an actual modified version, right? And if I want Jelly Bean, I have to continue using these modified versions, right?

"Rooted" just means the user (you) have the ability to make changes to the system or root of the device that are not possible for stock non-rooted users. Just rooting your device means you gained administrator access to the system but nothing is changed until you install roms or other mods.

Ah, I see, I thought it was JB since there were reports of people in some countries getting the JB update today. Coincidental timing!
Anyways, I went through with the update but it failed.

My pleasure, no worries! I have to much respect for any dev who undertakes developing or porting roms to call it a fan version. It's best to refer to it as "customized" which is what they are: custom versions of what may or may not be available.
Nah, unless there is a leak for the Verizon Jellybean update consider any news you hear/see about GSIII updates as completely useless unless Verizon is mentioned. The international version has completely different hardware inside the phone so any roms meant for that device will not work in the USA GSIII. You also can't actively flash another carrier's roms for this phone, it's not suggested and has the potential to render your device unresponsive.
