Ice Cream Sandwich BEAM-Feature? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

One of the halo features of the Galaxy Nexus and Ice Cream Sandwich is Beam, which via NFC lets you tap two phones together to share a map, image, website, or link to an app. Sure, we got a look at it during the demo this morning, but we decided to track down two Galaxy Nexus devices (or Galaxy Nexi) and see the direct sharing ourselves. As you will see in the video after the break, the transfer of a map and a website was really seamless and to confirm the transfer you are required to tap once on the phone sending the info. There's no confirmation on the receiving phone, you do have to enable the Beam and NFC features in the settings. That seems like a solid amount of protection, and considering you have to physically tap the two phones together, we assume you'd know that something is being sent over to your handset. Hit the break to see it all in action.
Any ideas if this will work with transformer (or is it something that has on the nexus s back "plate" to do?
what do you think about this feature?
Useless ...
Cool!
Yeah beat this windows and apple .... This is the feature don't!
eh WT* is this?

As neat of a feature this is, it will unfortunately not be coming to our beloved tablets as they lack NFC as a whole.

yeah i just saw that the android beam is only on the upcoming android devices with android 4.0 witch means only nexus prime has it :/

NFC needs another radio ( hardware). Unless the tablet or phone had NFC hardware, it will not work. Just like TF101 does not do 3G. Unless the new TF had the hardware it will not take advantage of this feature. NFC is showing up in phones in prep for payment services. This feature is fairly common in Europe.

I think the feature is awesome n will hopefully add tons of stuff to be able to transfer with it in the future.

Any chance Samsung's new funcionalities on the S III can be ported?

I'm pretty tired of Samsung's awful design capabilities, and attention to detail (from my experience with Galaxy S and Galaxy S II), but I'm actually pretty suprised with the S III's user-experience-functionalities.
My point is, Samsung introduced some cool new features, but I've had enough of their Galaxy's cheap plastic and want to move on to an HTC One X.
What I was wondering was, would there be any way to get any (if not all) of these features on any Android device?
- Direct Call: If you pick up your phone near your ear while reading a message, it will automatically dial that number. (Seems easy to port/mimic)
- Buddy Photo Share: An intelligent way to tag your friends in photos you take, by selecting their faces. After you've tagged them, the device will recognize them in future photos.
- Pop up play: This is actually pretty cool. If you're watching a video, you can pop it out and keep on doing other stuff, while the video is playing in a separate, moveable window. Could be handy.
- Smart alert: If you were away from your phone and someone called you, once you pick the phone back up it will let you know someone called by vibrating to inform you.
- Social tag: Once you've tagged a friend in a photo of his (see "Buddy Photo Share" above), while you're browsing through pictures of him the device will automatically link his tag and show you their current status on social networks.
- S-Beam: Actually pretty simple NFC file-transfer, by touching two compatible devices' back, it will transfer any file automatically between the two.
- Smart Stay: One of my favorites. Using the front-facing camera, the device will automatically brighten/dim the screen depending on whether you're looking at it or not.
There are other features, but I just thought these were the ones you'd actually use on a day-to-day basis.
Anyway, is there anything out there that can replace the features I just mentioned? Or even better, do you think it would be possible to port these exact features from a Galaxy S III to any other Android phone?
TL;DR: How to obtain Galaxy S III's features (above, in bold) in other Android phones?
Thank you for your time!
I think developers can do this touchwiz is not hard as htc sense.

No...no it won't... Wait, unless... YES! YES IT WILL! The International HTC One X IS quad core!
Thanks for your help, Sherlock!
Some of those features sound pretty cool, hadn't heard of this stuff before. Hope other manufacturers clone them in their phones or Google adds them to Android officially.
check this: OpenDesign:
"Our goal is to have features coming from various manufacturers user interface overlays be seamlessly integrated into your phone. Why is it cool? All CyanogenMod 9 enabled devices can enjoy software features for which manufacturers would rather you buy a new and expensive phone. "

Pretty good info, although they are saying they will do most stuff for Cyanogen Mod, whereas I would prefer having those features in, say, HTC One X's stock OS, by means of an app, for instance.
Anyone else got some thoughts on this? Do these features seem easy to port onto another OS?

Android 4.1 JellyBean

Well... we are all waiting gor official ICS to come to gtab+ , but now google releases new android 4.1...what an unfortunate for us..
We waited for AGES to get ICS, and till now we havent got it yet, i ask, till when we wait for JB?
Cheers

Probably 4-6 months. I saw an article where the reporter reached out to Samsung about updates, and they said they would seek to update their devices as possible. I personally think Google's push to make it available on Nexus and Motorola Xoom will force other manufacturers to provide Jelly Bean quickly if they want to sell their devices in the future.
It's not entirely a new huge platform jump of Android(Like Gingerbread to ICS) so it might not take that much time to update. A preview build was given to GN users OTA which is a good sign. I do look forward at the these features though:
Project Butter
Android 4.0 was a major upgrade from 2.3 Gingerbread, bringing a whole new interface and speed improvements. Jelly Bean improves on that, with something Google is calling “Project Butter.” This helps make the whole OS feel 100x faster and smoother, running at an insane 60 FPS.
Home screen customization has also been improved. Widgets will now wrap around the space available to them, so you won’t need to go through the hassle process of moving around icons and widgets.
Offline Voice Dictation
Google has not only made more improvements to the keyboard in Android 4.1 JB, but they’ve also brought offline voice dictation. This means that you won’t need a network connection in order to use voice dictation anymore, unlike Siri voice dictation, which needs a constant connection. Unfortunately, this feature is currently only available in US English, but Google promises that more language support will be coming soon.
The keyboard has also made other vast improvements in predictive text input, meaning that the keyboard thinks about what you are going to type before you even type it.
Notifications
In Android 4.0 ICS, we received the ability to view our notifications from our lockscreen, and access an app right through them. Android 4.1 JB takes this even farther, and allows you to do an action without even accessing the app, all from your notifications window pane.
For example, if someone calls you and you miss it, a notification obviously appears. When you swipe down, you can immediately choose to call the person back, or you can message them if you’d like, all directly from your notification window pane. If you’re currently calling someone and decide to hang up, you can just drag the notification window pane down and end the call from right there. Simple and Easy.
Google has also improved the way Social Networks and 3rd-Party apps are integrated with notifications. If you receive a Google+ photo, you’ll see a preview right from the lockscreen, without even having to access the Google+ app. You can comment and +1 on the photo right from your notification window pane, and quickly get back to what you were doing before.
3rd party developers also have great new features that they can integrate into their apps. Pulse, a popular social news reader, has the ability to show you the days’s top news-just by swiping the notification.

I'm going to just come out and say it, JB will probably not happen on the 7+, look at how long it took them to give us ICS with them already having released an ICS tablet almost identical to ours months ago. maybe the tab 2 will get it. But who knows maybe they will screw them too and make a tab 3.
im thinking 90% most likely officially won't ever happen, which is why i'm dropping samsung for the nexus 7

From what I understand, Flash is only unsupported in the Chrome browser, but you should still be able to use it for other browsers like Dolphin.

I'm in the same boat; but regardless I've bought my last Samsung product. Either I learn to deal with the cloud and no microSD storage, or I wait for someone else to come out with a similar product (maybe a 7.7 screen like the upcoming Toshiba Excite).
But no more Samsung.

I agree. Higher Res, twice the cores, and JB. I placed my order for the 16gb model. Ill miss the SD, but I think I'll be happy. But I won't sell my 7+ just yet.
If you're gonna talk about specs, Nexus S has a worst one than ours and yet it will receive the JB update. Since our device is very similar to the Galaxy SII, which is sure to get JB(I think), then we will too. It's a matter of patience again because of the lack of interest on our devices.

Nexus= google experience devices. Big difference.
I'm wondering what CrisisCore meant by this being a better tablet than the Nexus if we get ICS? In terms of specs, it's lower resolution and last-gen processor. Sure, it's got microSD and back camera, but really it's hard to argue with speed and resolution. On top of that, there will be far more development on that tablet due to a larger user-base (understatement of the year...). But I'm new to this device, so I'm curious if you know something I'm missing?

Precisely. "The Cloud" is an interesting concept but unless you have an avenue to connect anywhere at anytime (3/4G + WiFi) it's not as useful as one would desire.
No uSD will most always be a deal-breaker for me.
It'll take a long time. Remember FroYo to Gingerbread on the Galaxy S I series??

The Furious 5 Nexus Devices

This is just what I think the future of Nexus Devices should be like.
There's rumors floating there's 5 so the Companies i think are worth building Nexus products are Motorola, Samsung, Htc, Asus, and Google.
The 5 devices should be like:
Motorola
I think that Motorola should make the "The DROID" Phone(yes said just like ringtone)because their hardware and radios are awesome. This should be the Developer's phone. No encrypted bootloader and built completely vanilla. OG Droid enough said.
Samsung
Samsung should continue to make the Galaxy Nexus but gear it more towards everyday "iPhone" people. All they would need to do is bring some Galaxy SIII apps and ideas to a very clean user friendly Ui.
Htc
For Htc, I think they should make the media tablet in a 7" and a 10" variety. They should get some ideas from Motorola and take some Webtop functionality to a Google TV kind of devices. Built for the Netflix lovin, Music playin, Google Q using person lol.
Asus
Asus has the right idea. Imagine using a device made like the Transformer for developing directly with the hardware. Now I don't know if this could be done by making some sort of Dual-Boot Ubuntu/Android tablet. Boot up Ubuntu. Write a Rom or Application and then flash it the the Android side. Load Android and go to town. Plus have that Transformer like ability to dock to a real keyboard with more battery and USB 3.0 ports. So you can really develop anywhere. Even during real time, real world experiences.
Dear Google,
I just wanted to say something to from the bottom of my heart.
Make a Phone please.
I mean like "you" make a phone. Build some hardware. You made a Q, a glowing Ball of media streaming goodness (wish I could afford one lol). You should definitely make a Phone. I even know exactly what it would look like, CR-48 style and all. With the addition of the LED ring from your Q. Let me know if you would like me to draw it for you lol. A Phone manufactured by Google would be Amazing. Thanks and keep up the good work

What Do You Want To See in Android 4.3/5.0 ?

There are probably a few other threads like this, but I didn't really see any so I decided to start this one. Just to make it clear, these things are purely a wishlist, not rumors, and some of these things aren't even to be expected. Just purely for wishful thinking and conversation.
I'll start with the things that bother me most about Jelly Bean.
- Better Multi-Tasking & App Integration: If you're coming from iOS, then what we have is probably easy to live with, but its buggy. For instance, apps seem to get "confused" on what's really opened where. For instance, if I share a picture to Instagram from the gallery or Dropbox, and i go home afterwards, opening the respective app will bring me to Instagram, and opening Instagram will bring me somewhere completely different inside off Instagram. It's like Instagram is running twice. What Google needs to work on is actually having Android switch apps, instead of opening it inside of the other one.
- Rotation: I'm surprised I've never seen this posted anywhere else, but if you use an iOS device and you rotate it, the transition from portrait to landscape (or vice versa) is smooth. extremely smooth. don't give me wrong, Android rotates smoothly too, but the transition doesn't "connect" . Because what Android does is rotate the whole operating system (think of rotating a windows pc), whereas iOS rotates just the UI. The operating system itself doesn't seem to rotate. Ex: If you watched a YouTube video on an iOS device in landscape, when it's over or you go back, the landscape video just slides away with the app in portrait "behind" it. If you've seen it before you'd know what I mean. Android should do this also. Instead of rotating the whole OS, just have the UI rotate.
- Update Fragmentation: This issue will probably never be resolved, because google has almost no say so in what manufactures do with android, but 4.2 is out right? So why are 4.1 devices still shipping? Android has a nav bar now right? So why are devices still shipping with capacitive buttons and menu keys? This is why some devs haven't implemented the 3 dot overflow button in some apps I suppose. Also manufactures are abandoning devices that are still capable of running the latest versions of Android. For instance, the HTC Desire Z (T-Mobile G2) , HTC Desire HD (AT&T Inspire 4G) , and the Galaxy S 1 (which was basically a Nexus S) should've all been updated to AT LEAST 4.0. The updates for the S1 should have stopped when the Nexus S stopped receiving updates actually.
- Skins / OEM UI's - Another issue that will probably never be resolved. Skins were completely understandable up until 4.0 in terms of looks. Android is now a pretty good looking OS and doesn't need a skin. Also, if google were to implement most of the CM features, manufactures wouldn't even need to add features. (If it were up to me, all phones would come with CM, lol.) Also, why they choose to replace built in applications that are never updated is beyond me. If everyone kept the skinning to a minimum, we could have timely updates.
App Unification: I've seen this one so many times. Apps like Google Voice/Messenger/G Mail/ Etc. are all separate apps, but preform the same action, or somehow work together. Much like Google Earth, Maps, and Street View. Why not combine all of the similar apps, and save space and confusion.
Responsiveness / Smoothness: I'm gonna keep this one short, because Android gets better and better with each update, but it could be better. Swipe your finger across something like a webpage quickly and watch it follow behind your finger, whereas on other OS's the page will "stick" to your finger.
The "Back" Button: Something I'm sure we all get confused by at least twice a day. It's supposed to bring us to the previous screen until we get to the home screen, but at times, it'll take you places in apps you've never been, skips screens you've been too, etc. Basically, only half of the time it works at advertised.
Auto Brightness Calibration: Everyone's preferences for auto brightness is different, so why not be able to adjust how bright or dim you want it to be?
There are more things that I'd like to see in android, but at the moment this is all i can think about. Feel free to reply saying something you'd like to see in Android 4.3 / 5.
x2 battery performance > it's enough for me now
Some nice suggestions, but yeah Android needs a culture change where a phone continues to receive updates up until the updates surpass the phones capabilities. It sucks to see good phones left behind, I do understand the custom ROM argument but for everyone this isn't ideal

I think the best way to solve the OEM issue is for samsung, htc, and other manufacturers to make apps which are independent of any framework so that it can be easily updated to the latest android because porting an app is easier than a whole framework
Increase the battery by 10

They need to get rid of the slow and bloated java garbage in the core system apps. Google spouts about optimizing this and streamlining that to improve performance. They prelink the core libraries to further improve performance. And then they go and use a crappy, slow virtual machine language for most of the system.
Java is fine for apps in the app store for developers that dont know c/c++. It should not be used as extensively in the core of android as it is.

I can't think of anything because I fail at imagination so ill just say things I want from skinned androids that should be added to stock.
1. Smart dialer. Pressing numbers should look up contacts like t9.
2. Battery percentage in status bar. I don't know if this is due to patents that aapl has but Samsung and lg get away with having it.
3. Able to remove home screens. I only use 4-5 and I want the ability to remove the rest like every oem skin.
4. Power saver. Battery life is very important and android needs a way to make it last longer.
5. Facebook contact sync. Not sure why this is not allowed on stock Android.
These are my top 5. As for something new I would like them to improve on giving apps permission. I think every app should ask you when you first start it if it can be allowed to use your gps and if it can be allowed to send push notifications. It's the only thing I like on ios and it'll help with a lot of notification spam.
Also, why does the new gmaps look better on ios than on android. That's not acceptable.

My biggest problem is the update process of 3rd party android manufacturers. Android 4.2 has been out for a couple months yet my Galaxy SII was only recently updated to 4.1. I know it is more than capable of running 4.2 as I'm running aokp/cm10.1 right now so I'm wondering why? Even the SIII is still on 4.1 and if a couple of guys (aokp/cm10.1/paranoid android) could port within a month or two then why can't major companies who have hundreds of employees. Just look at what the paranoid android team has accomplished with P. A. 3.0 it's like a new version of android, all done within a few months. That said, I like to have the latest updates on my phone so with this being my first Android phone, I think I might bypass anything that isn't a nexus. Google or somebody needs to put their foot down

I think from now android should work on its AI and Virtual Memory to makes itself so smooth and powerful !
i saw a video clip that compare 2 powerful cellphone Galaxy S III and IPhone 5
in first look Galaxy S III has 4 core and IPhone has only 2 but IPhone is powerful enough to defeat its opponent !
Why ? there's one , only one reason to say the IPhone is too powerful and it's its OS !
IOS is very powerful than android !
if u don't satisfy just go and do a search about it !
i want android to work on it's AI !!
I realize this is stupid but...
With the androidx86 project (that I think is KILLER!!!) I'd like to see them either implement desktop support or do things that would entice more people to get involved. How bad ass would x86 running and then being able to use your phone as a second screen be? Or as remote access? And since they are both natively running (relatively speaking) it would be a real remote desktop as compared to jittery/almost remote desktop on a phone.

imho, i think manufactures want to release their new flagship with the newest OS to attract customers (which is really doesn't) . our devs here shows what can be done. with a whole team like HTC/Samsung/Etc has, we should all see updates within a month or less. devs can do it on their own, so why can't they?

For me anyway, the back button has always performed how I would expect (take me back to the previous screen). Don't get me wrong, android has plenty of flaws, but I don't think this is one of them.

it works for the most part, but it glitches occasionally.

Some nice suggestions, but yeah Android needs a culture change where a phone continues to receive updates up until the updates surpass the phones capabilities. It sucks to see good phones left behind, I do understand the custom ROM argument but for everyone this isn't ideal

One of the biggest reasons I only stick with Google backed Android devices (Nexus 4, Galaxy Nexus, etc.). It's the device manufacturers and the phone companies that hold up the updates. I've heard numbers where HTC can get the update out 3-4 months after Google releases it, but Verizon could add another 6 months to that timeline. Not quite sure what the exact reasons are for the delay =(
Considering some of the Google Now features, I'd love to see Google buy/license Tasker so that it becomes and integrated part of Android, at least for some key items:
WIFI, GPS, Ringer settings, Sync settings, etc. Those features would be amazing.
It would also be great if I could say: "Turn on WIFI/GPS/Autobrightness, Sync Calendar, Turn off ringer, etc" while in Google Now and have the action executed.

[Q] Idea on Android Wristwatch

A few of in the IT department were thinking today about how nice it would be to not be tied to a singular device and instead be able to move across devices, even across multiple smartphones with ease. This led to this idea we thought we would run by the braintrust. Here's the What If:
You create an Android based Wristwatch. It will take a SIM Card so its on your mobile provider as a phone and data. It has bluetooth and is a Wifi Hotspot. It does voice, GPS, etc so its somewhat usable as a device. You could even have a small screen on it for doing some very very basic functionality.
Now, you take your Samsung S4, or Nexus 7 and you sync them together. Maybe you even have an HTC One you keep in the office. The other devices use the wristwatch for everything .. connectivity to the carrier, internet, etc. Even your car stereo would use it to connect to Pandora. Sure, you can do this now with Wifi Hotspot, but how many of us have multiple devices and feel compelled to carry them with us?
With this, the "power" for connectivity is small and unobtrusive. Now, I can use my tablet as a phone when I'm strolling around the office (why carry phone + tablet?) or even use a different phone from work vs home (S4 Active for Home, Samsung Note 3 at the office) and switching is easy (could be proximity based, or simply a button I press on the new device's home screen).
Such a device could interact with modern game consoles, smart TV's running Google TV, and other devices by enabling collaboration among users as well.
We see that people are creating wristwatch android devices, but I don't see a smart"phone" coming in that form factor with the software to link the devices together. Do you think that this would be useful to you? Do you think such a thing could exist and be popular?
Thanks, just looking to start a discussion =)

Based on the reports my smartphone shows, the largest consumption of battery is the screen itself. If you get rid of that, smaller batteries should be able to compete?
it sounds kind of like your explaining the Omate smartwatch which I think is good

Like the Sony SmartWatch?

Thanks for sharing idea and infos. Sounds cool. By the way - to solve that battery problem: Why not have a belt? There is plenty of space around my waist
