i've always wondered about this because of all the posts. its kind of a rant just forwarning
i understand that the US is in a recession so excuse me if i generalize, but why use the fuze as a substitute carpc? i understand people spend good money on a pda but why not just build a carpc.
you get more functionality with more upgradability and bigger screen
a budget inspired carpc can be had very cheap even brand new is still cheaper than buying a unbranded unlocked touch pro.
just to give you guys an idea i've built mine under 500 it would have been mid 300 but i'm an audio guy so i had to get a legit sound card and went with a 8" vs 7" and keep in mind this is brand new prices. you dont even need a sound card
8" touchscreen ~150
all-in-one pc ~90
hdd + memory ~60
power supply ~80
sound card ~100
i get internet and gps because of my phone but any 3g gps enabled phone could do this.
i think a fuze attached to wires is ludacris and hateful to the phone. its a "mobile" phone not a landline lol k flame away
The Fuze does almost everything your CarPC does and it fits in my pocket. I can take it into the gym and still access my music, still use the internet, etc. Just in the car it's attached to a larger screen.
If I went with a CarPC project I'd want to go all out. I have a Dodge Charger with the stock NAV. It works well but it is limited; not a touchscreen, only plays MP3 CDs with no hard drive interface.
I've played with the idea of replacing it with a 10" touchscreen for VGA movies/DVDs, pretty well sized solid state HD for media storage (for shock resistance and low energy consumption), wifi to link with my home network and download while in my garage, run Windows XP with some GPS based Navigation software, and of course have a USB port for my Fuze to serve as a 3G modem when on the road for browsing and traffic updates.
If I could link the Fuze to a touchscreen, maybe even interface with a more accurate GPS antenna, and wire it into my car stereo I would be one happy driver.

i know you said almost everything so just to toss it out there. i do make backups of my cds but in order to add music to my phone i would have to either buy mp3s online or use my pc to add music to the phone. same goes with movies. of course this is legally speaking only.
i change through albums and artists all the time. i dislike wm players just takes to long to access
i can drive around and pop in dvds and watch movies on road trips.
i also enjoy listening to higher quality stereo (ya i know its a personal preference i've listened to afew mp3 player instals and i am enjoying the money well well spent)
the battery isn't horrendous on the fuze but its not above decent. i would love to be on wifi or 3g the whole time. yes we know hopping on peoples networks is a nono but still. yes i can take my fuze with me but charging and listening to music ugh power noise

you dont need to go all out. i've just got the necesities and its getting the job done plus some. and a side note i have a hdd and pushing around 137dbs but just doubled the watts so should be a few higher and the hd is about 3yrs old still holding strong and taking a ridiculous daily beating (vegas heat and a sub next to it).
i do really enjoy my phone and i've used it as a center for my car while doing the carpc instal and while driving other ppls cars and i can say i am glad i switched but of course personal preference. its just so much easier to do same things.
again just wanted to rant. flame away

Am I the only one who noticed the charging port is located below the kickstand on the opposite of the hinge side?
That means no charging when placed on a table in landscape mode, wow really HTC, how did that pass design? should have been placed on the bottom or on the hinge side of the kickstand. Now we can't charge our phone while watching a movie, etc. while using the kickstand.
They want you to buy the dock apparently. At least mine works with the stand going upside down. Not ideal, but it does stay up
Didn't think about using it upside down, I guess that will work, still bad design. But you are probably right, done to make us buy the dock. Thanks
You could also do what a guy in the store when i went to play with one, who noticed this with the floor models said... just have it on the edge of a table? Also not ideal, but would keep you from dropping $$ on the dock option. But if your seriously using your phone to watch movies in a place where you can charge it/use the stand you might want to consider getting the dock. I see the main benefit of the stand/phone for movies is when your on the go and likely can't plug it in anyway.
Then again if I use as you described wouldn't the video be upside down? I don't think it rotates to landscape that way, unless I am missing something
No offense, but you seriously didnt know what was an issue before buying the phone? Not trying to be a jerk, but it was pointed out in each and every review I read of the device starting back at CES. It is to accomodate charging while in the multimedia dock.
Same complaint here! Anyone know if L-shaped power pigtail connectors are available?
It seems to be designed for left-handed people, well except for the kickstand.

I guess I overlooked it, wasn't concerned with the kickstand when looking at all the specs, bottom line is we should be able to view landscape with kickstand while charging. bad design.

edit: wow i cant even post the link or pictures cause i need a minimum of eight posts....
whatever im sure you can search amazon also
Debating on disregarding everything awesome about this phone because you can't charge and use the kickstand at the same time? Wow.
Design flaw probably not, just a compromise. If you look at the hinge side of the kickstand it goes in deeper into the phone probably causing the design not to have enough space for the usb... maybe they could have put it on the bottom but i'm sure there was a reason. I work with designers and they are quite thoroughl. And from the HTC team video for the thunderbolt those guys look like they know what they are doing. You could return it and not have LTE or wait for a phone with LTE and no kickstand. Pick your flavor

Yes, a right angle will reduce the offset, but it will still cause the phone to not set horizontally properly. Still gonna need something to prop up the other side of the phone.
You can always post a link without the http:// part, people can paste that into their browser.
been searching everywhere. Need a usb with a bend like this.

Verizon has no say in that.
I didn't realize it would block the kickstand until I tried it, so it's annoying but whatever. Just another silly decision like putting the kickstand in front of the speak. Stuuuuupid.
If the port wasn't there the dock would be harder to make (you wouldn't be able to just set it in the dock without plugging anything in), and if it was on the volume rocker side you wouldn't have access to those buttons while docked. So it was a design compromise and a design that gives people an incentive to buy the dock, which is a win for the manufacturer. HTC makes phones and accessories to make money, not to give us a free standup movie player or alarm clock. I guess they could have put the port on the back of the phone somewhere but that would look silly and you wouldn't be able to lay it down and charge. I bought the dock for my OG droid and it was well worth the money, I'll surely be buying the dock for my bolt when it's available.

All that makes sense, but HTC knows how to do docks right...look at the Nexus 1 and its dock (I have 2 of the docks). Separate charger pins that don't use the usb port (which is also a charger). Similar would have been a nice compromise.
If a kickstand was my main reason for purchasing this device, then I might consider a return. Sure, maybe it's a design flaw, but so far, if that's the only evil we have to deal with..
I'ma let you finish, but HTC makes the best 4G phones of all time.
..of all time.
All these little nit picky things confuse me, is someone actually buying this device to use as something other than a phone? Sure, it browses the internet, has 4g, checks facebook, takes nice pictures, is really fast, but I am sure the **** not sending a video out to my tv, or streaming to videos or you tube to my tv , or trying to play "real" video games, that is why I have a laptop or home pc, it's a phone. I must be confused.

I agree. Phone first everything else second. The kickstand isnt designed so you can watch full fledged movies. It is made for occassional use. If it really bothers you...buy the dock or return the TB and get Samsung Stealth which dont even have a kickstand.
I destroyed my Acer tablet that I enjoyed very much. The extended warranty company said they will just give me my money back as that is cheaper than repairing it.
Do you guys recommend the Zoom? Any common issues to be concerned about? Does it have a standard USB port?

no it doesnt have a standard usb port like the a500 does, but if you buy a usb otg cable for about $4 the custom rom already have host support so it doesnt quite matter about a full sized standard usb port except maybe the voltage but people here still can use usb drives well anyway. I bought an a500 and it was the biggest piece of poop; hated it.. refunded it and bought another xoom. The manner in which the bootloader is used is awesome if anything buggers out you can manually push files with fastboot which rocks and helps minimize the chances of a bricked device. The ability to unlock said bootloader is quick and painless and this time round i was on a custom rom with the second verizon 3g xoom in about half hour. I know there is debate on people waiting for a prime, or a new model but seriously we will receive ICS and the original xoom is now nice and cheap =].. again though, it is your money and you can do as you please but i am a happy customer and the proud owner of 2 xooms, a wifi only and a 3g+wifi
yep love the xoom but saying that its my first tab so I don't have anything else to compare it too in terms of real use age
However in terms of spec and hardware it is a very capable device, it has USB host mode, up to 96gb memory with a 64gb card, good cpu/gpu combo, good speakers, good cameras, HDMI, decent screen size and OK screen (I am used to amoled) ,decent GPS etc etc
For the money the xoom goes for and the support from this community and hardware/spec you get you can really go wrong
I got mine about two weeks ago and have been enjoying it loads
If you get a good price you can't go wrong
Thanks guys, the only issue I ever had with the A500 is the microphone sucked. Spec wise the zoom and acer are the same except for the USB thing. The zoom has more storage too.
Does the mic work well on the zoom? I used my tablet every day at University and need that part to work for note taking

The mic works very well in my experience. I'm having fun with voice action apps (Iris, Jeannie) and it works better than I had expected.
[just a thought] if the device headphone port can also act as a microphone you can always buy a micro nub microphone from ebay to try and boost volume capture rather than relying on microphone inside the device.. i was gonna grab one for my phone, but most of my lectures weren't assessable ie it was more the skills (as i do forensics) rather than spit out what they said to us

Good luck!
Handwriting option for all text input?(browser, email, etc.)?? I played with one at Best Buy last night, and tried to find an option to do this. I thought when I'd played with the Note phone months ago I was able to do this. I found something that looked like it might be a text input button on the regular keyboard and I tried writing and nothing happened. This would be a huge disappointment to me if not possible, because I hate soft keyboards and would rather scribble anything not long enough to require a legitimate full-sized hard keyboard. I'm assuming there is such an option though?
S-Note widget- I use Color Note all the time on my phone sticking notes all over the home screens. Does s-note/memo have this ability? I could write out with handwriting recognition in something like Color Note(depending on my previous question about handwriting..)..but I'd like to streamline things.
Short charging cable. With the adapter that has USB/microusb/etc., can I just plug my regular 10 feet charger cable into the adapter and charge it that way? I need a LONG cable.
S-Note apk..has it been made available to install on other devices, and do they sync? I have a Galaxy Nexus, so would I be able to install there and sync the notes between both devices?
Does anyone use the smart remote Peel app to control their home theater? I tried the Peel app on my Galaxy Nexus that I think just worked with DirecTV(apparently the one on the Note is much more full-featured) and it sucked because you can't even pull up the CHANNEL GUIDE, making it useless. I have a Mitsubishi 82740 DLP TV, DirecTV, Onkyo NR609 receiver, and Panny BMT220 blu-ray player. Hoping I'll be able to control it all with my Note, this would be one of the main selling points of the device for me. I currently do control the blu-ray, receiver, and Direct with my phone but I have to use separate apps for each. Hoping this will allow me to do it all in one app, more of a true "universal remote." I wonder though why it uses IR instead of through wi-fi, since you don't have to point at the devices with wi-fi?
Does using a screen protector affect the S-Pen at all?? Maybe I don't need one..but I always feel better if there's a screen protector on my devices.
Color- the grey one looks blue to me in photos, at least on the front. Can anyone confirm? I've been wanting a white one, but if it's actually a bluish-grey color as it looks to me in pictures I might go that direction. Looks pretty unique to me among tablets.
I saw someone else mention something about left-handed calibration on their Note. I'm lefty and am not sure what that's all about. Is there something about handwriting that makes it not work well for a lefty?
What are the limitations of using microsd for storage? I have a Galaxy Nexus without a microsd card slot of course, so I don't now but I believe I've read that apps can't be installed on the SD card in ICS, which isn't an issue for me, but is that the only negative to using an SD card as storage? Just wondering because I have a 16g microsd card from my previous phone, and wondering if there's any reason to spend an extra $50 for the 32g model if I can just use an SD card for more storage.
Wow. Big list, but I'll try some of this. Mine just arrived today.
1.There's an app for that - 7Notes with mazec
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...Zlbmtub3dsZWRnZS5zZXZlbm5vdGVzcHJvZHVjdGVuIl0.
2. You can use Color Note.
3. It'll probably take longer to charge, or won't charge at all. You have to test it.
4.?
5.?
6.?
7. I see gray - gray, but it depends on your vision and the lighting. Go look at it.
8.?
9. You can use 64GB but have to format it fat32.
? Means I don't know, maybe someone else will help.
Figured given Motorola's recent announcement that they'd be eliminating and/or no longer support these docks, that it would be useful as a community to track and track down the best prices of these items and pass them onward. Don't know about the rest of you but the capability of docking the phone was a huge sell to me - I simply couldn't justify the additional cost of the dock at the time I bought the phone.
In reading around, I've heard that Radio Shack is or was selling the Bionic Lapdock for $20 - I don't know if that is still the case.
I know that I at least am willing to prop the case open and flip connectors around if need be to make the dock work correctly with my phone.
Anyone else seen any of these lapdocks around at reasonable prices of late?
Regards.
whats the 500p and whats the difference between the 500 ?
Hrm. I might have been misreading things - when I search on the Moto site, I'm only seeing a 500 Professional. So perhaps different sites were referring to that particular model different ways.
Either way, I've got alerts set on SlickDeals and am keeping my eyes peeled on eBay. Anyone checked out a local Radio Shack to see if they still have the Bionic dock?
the bionic docks go around $50 on ebay, though i got mine $70 becuz i needed int ship
$50-60 right now at http://bensoutlet.com/
This is part of the 1saleaday family of websites. It's where I got mine.
Turning around the plugs was super easy but I don't actually use it that often. I have an Otterbox Defender on mine I have to take it out of the case to use it. Working on putting together to adapters to make a Raspberry Lapdock.

Will that one for the 4G work with the A2 on ICS?
Ive been running my A2 w/OTA ICS... rooted for a few weeks now and just got the Droid Bionic lapdock for it. The A2 fits like a glove and it seems as long as im on wifi it doesnt run into an entitlement error. i found the lapdock on ebay new for 75 which compared to 300 when it first came out is still a pretty good deal. There was no need to change ports or anything since the ports for both the A2 and bionic are the same just sit in different spots on the side of the phones. The lapdock is lighter then my laptop and i pretty much use my phone for everything else so buying a lapdock to me was a good investment. i always have the HD dock station for music/movies for my tv. ICS webtop is much friendlier then GB and has more of the tablet interface feel to it...so ics is the way to go for the A2.
Hope this was helpful. :fingers-crossed:

Yup, did it with mine. You have to take it apart and make the holes in the plastic (for the connectors) a little bigger so that you can flip the connectors around and stick them in the right orientation for the atrix 2. If you don't make the holes big enough, the ports will be misaligned just enough so that it wont dock very easily, and it will go in crooked. If they are big enough the problem is eliminated. Reassemble everything and enjoy webtop 3.0!
If you don't already have an atrix 4G lapdock though, go for the Bionic one. It doesn't have to be modified, and it fits better (the bionic is closer in size to the atrix 2 than the atrix 4G is)
I picked up a Bionic one from the Ben's Outlet sale - as another member described, it fits perfectly, and functions perfectly as well. Didn't even need to swap any ports around though I was prepared to do so if necessary. AT&T hasn't tried to ding me for tethering yet either, but we'll see how long that takes.
I'd been looking towards a tablet/phablet for the future, but having the lapdock makes that a none issue now, I think, especially at the prices we all seem to be finding.
I've still got alerts set up on SlickDeals for the various Lapdocks, will definitely continue to share them in this thread in hope that others can get good deals.
Hm, looks like my extended battery would get in the way on the Bionic dock? It's really NBD, I'm thinking of getting the LG Nexus 4 when it comes out, but if decide to stick with the A2 for a while more, a lapdock would be nice.
My lapdock experience and also a question
I just recently bought the lapdock 100 off of amazon, and so far I thought it was okay, but the connector wouldn't fit if I had my otterbox commuter case on. I started to read any posts related to using the bionic dock instead, but was a bit confused on whether of not it would fit properly. Taking a gamble I went and purchased the bionic dock on thursday morning, and being in Connecticut It arrived today this afternoon, $50 refurbished with free shipping from New Jersey. So far I cannot leave the otterbox on but it works better than the 100 dock I got for $120, which I kinda consider a waste of my time, but not really because I wasn't sure how I would be using the dock everyday, and whether or not I would want to use it at all for web browsing, video, small document editing, and music using an external speaker ( I tried both of the docks' speakers, they both are really meh for me and my music listening. I prefer my logitech ue earbuds and jbl micro II speaker)
Long story short, go with the bionic lapdock, bigger screen, slimmer form facter, just careful with the hinge, it's a bit easier to close the screen, not much resistance compared to the 100 lapdock. At least the refurbished ones
Q: I can't seem to change the tap to click settings when using the bionic dock. also I don't get battery charge stats or settings either, I did have bootstrap to go to cm10, but restored to ics from a cm backup. Is there a way to re download the OTA 4.0.4 update and apply again? I just want to make sure that it's not the dock.

Question to those who use the lapdock 100. I just received mine in the mail and I discovered a pretty bad defect. I'm a pretty fast typist, so I tend to press multiple keys at once. But I discovered when I attempt to type the word "know", I get this weird chain of letters that come out that looks like "knuowzo".
For those of you that use the lapdock 100, can you please try and see if you can replicate this problem? Try typing "know" really fast, or press multiple keys together.
Edit: I also discovered that typing "press" really fast ends up as "prewsps" or "prewss". It's quite irritating. I'm hoping it's just a defective unit, as I like this lapdock better than my other original bionic lapdock.
