SkyRocket GPS - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I'm interested to hear from those who have tried or bought the Skyrocket on how the GPS performs compared to the OG GS2 GPS? I'm on the fence like others and would like to know if the Skyrocket GPS is better/worse/same as the OG GS2. For me, I have 6 days left on my OG GS2 30 day return period. I'm very pleased so far with the GPS performance (superior to my previous Infuse and Captivate phones); however, I miss the 4.5" screen. I can get the $149 price on the Skyrocket, but honestly, I do 99% of my data transfer via WiFi, so LTE not criticial today. If the GPS on the skyrocket compares to OG GS2, I may pull the swap.. if not, probably keep the OG. Thanks!

Why would you not want the option of LTE? Go get it right now!

My Skyrocket's GPS is on point and I'm in NYC where it's not easy to have a clear view to the sky. You can hardly see the sky lol. Locks within seconds.

I had the OG-SGS2 for 28days. I now have the SGS2LTE for 2 days. From what I can tell thus far. GPS seems to be about the same for acquiring a signal. Avg about 10-15sec. The longest I have had to wait on the LTE version is about the same.

I have used both and I will tell you it is much better. It locks on faster, with more accuracy and in places it never would lock on before.

I believe it will only keep getting beter....now that I have one...Had to go to Best Buy and do the price match thing..

Need to order my otterbox case though.

GPS on the skyrocket is awesome...locks fast and I get an accuracy of 3m..much faster and more accurate then my att sensation...I was a diehard HTC fan but as for me Sammy is pulling away...not to bad for my first Sammy...

Skyrocket GPS.. is amazing. Even better than the SII IMO

I have seen a significant difference while acquiring signal

It's really solid for me. Quick fix, accurate

Can someone explain this?
Here are screencaps from GPS Status + Toolkit and GPS Test... Can you see the "anomaly?"
This phone appears to "see" about twice as many satellites as any other mobile phone I have tested, way beyond the usual 12 or so. Only appears to "use" 12 or less, though.
EIDT: I pulled the trigger on the second screencap too soon after switching to the GPS Test app, therefore only 5 satellites in use. The 2 apps showed about the same number in view and in use with 3 meter accuracy outside with a clear sky view. This GPS is mighty good.

I've been amazed by the GPS on this thing in contrast to the original galaxy s. Just instant lock times and an accurate compass.

Where is it $149?
Has anyone NOT living in an LTE area managed to get it for $149 either in person or online? What is a ZIP code I can put in that will show up as a $149 area? I want to see if I can put that in, then proceed with checkout and see if it will let me do it.
If not I may just take a screenshot and see if Best Buy will price match based on what it shows on there.

Yeah it was a mistake. GPS was one of the things I was worried about with the Skyrocket. The main things holding me back are the supposedly inferior processor and GPU, some people say the low resolution on such a big screen looks bad, and the GPS.
After reading that it is evidently quite good, I got ahead of myself and asked about where I could get it for $149. I asked it in the Q&A instead.

no biggie, just wanted you to get an answer and not get lost in the thread.... resolution is better than infuse to me.

Right at 2000 miles into our road trip now....not one single issue other than a small glicth in the mountains for about 10 mins.
Very impressed so far

I'm one of the people that went from the SGSII to the Skyrocket.
Comparing the two phones I would have to say that GPS is far better on the Skyrocket.
Sitting on my couch in my family room I would get about 5 sat locks with the SGSII. The Skyrocket consistently gets about 11 sat locks in the exact same location.

Here's mine from work

(Q) Nexus S Gps

So...I currently own a vibrant and want to pick up a nexus s mainly because I'll be guaranteed android upgrades. My main concern is if the nexus s utilizes the same gps chip as the other galaxy s phones. If it does, it is an epic fail because gps accuracy is still HORRID on these phones and would be a total dealbreaker.
Anyone know the answer?

The Nexus S has an improved antenna.
But even then the GPS issues on the Galaxy S series were mostly software ones since they've now been patched between the update, and the app ont he market to reset the gps settings.

But that mostly means that there is still a hardware issue and that means the difference between driving on the road and driving perpendicular to it.

REQUEST
Those who already have their phone: please make a GPS test as it follows:
choose a location outside which you can easily identify on google earth (a tree, a big rock, something small but visible on satellite view)
go out there and use an app which shows GPS coordinates - preferably the free app GPS test
stand next to object and get the coordinates, write it down, etc (for this wait a while till more precise fix)
go back to house, type the coordinates into Google Earth
measure the distance between the location you got with your phone and the real object using Google Earths measuring tool
post the results here
Well, I'm not gonna do all that, but maybe this will help.
I did a cold start on Maps. Got a lock on within 10 seconds. Pretty damn good. Now I'm using GPS Test app and was able to lock on all satellites. 7 out of 7. This is all within my house. Wifi is off.
I can happily say that GPS works fine. From my experience anyways.
Yup GPS is fine locked faster and seems more accurate than my vibrant

It was either Endgadget or gizmodo, but they said the GPS still sucks on the nexus s that it took forever for them to get a lock. I was tired of playing with ROM's etc, which is why I sold my vibrant and got a mytouch4g. I do miss the vibrant, but I geocache and a accurate GPS is something I needed.

They also said they were driving while trying to get a lock... And in my experience (Nexus S, TomTom, Garmin), a GPS can't get a lock while you're moving. Maybe the best ones can, but their test is not enough to say that Nexus S sucks.
I feel that I have a bad GPS. It's. Not seeing more than 2 satellite outdoor. I will test it more

Those that say that the GPS issues of the Galaxy S line of phones were fixed via the software update and market app probably don't own a Galaxy S phone. The GPS is definitely not fixed. In fact, it's the only reason why I'm in this forum. I'm willing to give up AT&T 3G for a working GPS -- I plan to sell my Captivate and buy a Nexus S if the GPS works.
Also, those that say they got a fast lock and great accuracy, that doesn't exactly mean anything yet. Most Galaxy S users had great GPS performance out-the-box, and after a hard reset. But the performance gradually degrades over the course of a few days, and then you eventually want to throw your phone out the window. So the fact that only some Nexus S owners have great GPS performance -- and not ALL -- leaves me discouraged. But we should have a better assessment after a few days.
Maybe Samsung and/or Google also released in market the pieces that they have produced, before changing the GPS antenna....
Maybe that's why some users have GPS issues and others not...
So maybe we have 2 deferent produced devices....
Nice scenario don't you think???

Is there a model number of captivates that have wore GPS?

Im going to try to return my phone since the GPS cant do anything in regards to navigation. It never knows what street im on even when its locked.
Is there a certain model I should be requesting that performs better?

not true. my phone is build no. 1012 rev 0.4 and everything works as expected, including GPS.
Mine has never ever, locked once!!!
Mine is 1007 stock and I've always been able to use the GPS. So imho it's pretty much luck of the draw.
I don't even care anymore. I've given up on Samdung to be honest.. terrible support and no communication for their 10 million galaxy s devices.
For what its worth, I have a 1006 build and gps is marginal at best when tracking - regardless of which ROM and gps cocktail files I throw at it.
Supposedly the newer builds have better tracking, but there isn't any PROOF.

Samdung... Clever. I prefer Samsuck myself.
I have a model 1009 running Serendipity 2.0, and my GPS gets a very quick lock and maintains lock when I'm driving in the car for the most part.
I had 2 1008's that both had great gps with Darkys rom and very spotty if any lock with other roms. I now have a refurbished 1007 running Darkys that locks fast and tracks great too.
I have a 1007, that I got to replace my old 1007 and the new phone's gps works perfectly with any rom I've used. Guess I got lucky.

I have to agree that GPS on my Captivate isn't great since day 1 either.
Recently I've been using Designgears Perception build 10.0, GPS has nothing but spectacular. Did a few long-drive road test and didn't lose signal even once and testing it with short trips for about a week now. Signal lock is within a minute. That is with both Google Maps/Navigation and CoPilot Live. A round trip from St. Robert to St. Louis, MO then from St. Robert, MO to Fort Smith, AR and back and GPS has been Spot on. This is with Perception Build 10.0 - Before I made the trip back from Fort Smith, I decided to update to Perception build 10.1 and GPS just gave out on me... did not work at all... get all kind of GPS signal but can not be locked into 3D to get an accurate position. Great thing I still have Build 10.0 on the phone decided to flash back from Build 10.1 to 10.0 and GPS is miraculously work the way it meant to be. This is the first time GPS on my Captivate has been working so well for me ever since day 1. I almost made a jump to Windows Phone 7 because of it. Now, I don't have to anymore, all thanks to Designgear.

I'm curious...
If you look at all the messages and statements here that the GPS on the Galaxy phones don't work, one would think (at least anecdotally) that a large percentage of the phones' GPS's don't work. Does anybody have any numbers showing the percentage of the phones with the problem? I mean, with multi millions of phones sold, one would think that you would hear more of it outside the tech stream media. Maybe it has been, and I just didn't notice. Does anybody have any link to the number/percentage of phones affected?

Nah, that data doesn't exist. You could start a poll thread. It'd be skewed towards XDA users (which might comprise in part those that find their phone inadequate) but that'd give some idea.
My phone varies from poor gps tracking to completely unfunctional depending on the ROM. Incidentally, all 2.2 i9000 were 100% broken for me, but 2.2.1 i9000 brought it up to "crappy". YMMV

Minus the fact that the iPhone antenna actually works... That thing never loses my position... NEVER. A simple case on the phone remedies the issue... with the captivate, there is nothing you can do but keep returning the phone.
My GPS is perfect. I have 10 locks in within 30 seconds. This is my second captivate due to me dropping the first one and the screen breaking. When I used the GPS on that device I got a Max of 3 satellites with 1 lock. I think it its that they have slightly updated the device as time has passed on.

This phone has issues. Tmo says no calls lately?

I had to call tmo today to order a 3rd set of g2x.
Reboots and freezing have gotten out of hand.
I had a Rep tell me they have not gotten calls about the issues recently and thought they were just about ironed out.
I got a real bad retention agent who basically said go elsewhere.
Really. But even she was better than Verizon.
I called back about my bill and got a great agent who read the notes from retention I think as she knew we both were having issues.
The transfer went from customer support to loyalty.
Loyalty sent 2 new phones out today. Same day.
This will be our 3rd set of g2x.
Tmo claims call ins are down. Complaints too.
I hope these phones work or we will have to look at sensations.

Did you try factory data reset ?
That seems to work on some of the phones that are having reboot problems.
I'm on my 3rd G2X and the only problem I've had with all 3 is poor data reception
at my work location. (while the MyTouch 4g does just fine there)
I returned my phone to TMo for a refund over a week ago but Craigslist
got to me in when I saw a G2X for $260 so I'm back.
Too bad this phone is only capable of 14mbps.
I'm definitely down for getting a Sensation though.
I'll just get one off Craigslist.
Anyone see anywhere what speed the Sensation can do ?
TMo will doubtless get the Galaxy S II, dont worry.
The Sammysung Hawk is going to be 21 mbps buts it not dual core.

My phone has some hellacious troubles with lost signal. I did the GB leak update, but that didn't take care of it. I drove from my house in Chicago to one of the burbs to check out a Sammy Charge from Verizon and the phone lost signal at least a half dozen times. On the way back, the Charge didn't lose signal once. Don't know if it's faulty software when it transitions from "4G" to lower speeds, bad radio driver or bad antenna design. This is basically a good phone, but dropping calls when I'm driving is simply not acceptable when my N1 and now the Charge don't have the problem, driving the exact same routes.

This is simply false. The Orion is 1.2 Ghz which is why the OS feels snappier. Android doesn't use the GPU for accelerated graphics except in a few apps. Honeycomb is the first OS that really pushes GPU acceleration.
Go on Youtube and compare 3D games between both phones and see which one lags out and stumbles to keep up. Hint (it isn't the G2x)

Why do people keep swapping phones?!?!? Seriously? There hasn't been any new OS updates from T-Mobile/LG so you're not going to get a different software experience. I am waiting for an update - if the update doesn't fix it then I can say it's a faulty hardware. Also the leaked GB is useless as it uses the same baseband and kernel as our current system. If you flash Cyanogenmod and still get reboots then you might have a faulty phone as that's a completely separate kernel.

Talk me out of a trip to the At&T store

I've been using the Atrix 2 for a few days now and and seriously considering returning it.
I really want to like this phone but so far something about it just seems "off"
I don't like the camera, I have issues with wifi, and even though the GPS says accurate to 10 meters, when I am in my back yard, google maps satellite view shows me in my neighbor's yard.
I love the size and build quality and the screen is beautiful.
I'm eligible for upgrade in late january. Should I just suffer, then sell and get the Galaxy Nexus when it comes out, or move to the SGS II now and sell it (probably for more money)
My other concern is the locked bootloader. I've never had a phone without access to ROMS and kernels. I know it's a new phone, been out a month or so, but are there any Motorola Phones that have NOT been able to be unlocked eventually?
I'd love some input.
i'm in the same boat.
if development seemed like it was moving somewhere, i wouldn't feel so much like returning it. but, the development section is a ghost town, doesn't seem promising for the atrix 2.
I'm going on vacation next week to disney so I'll put the phone through it's paces, really USE the camera and make my decision when I get home. I still have time.
Like I said I want very much to like the phone.
Same here. I miss my HTC sense already.something just not right about the ATRIX. Considering exchanging for a free inspire4g. Virtuous unity rocks on that phone. Atrix2 camera is really crappy, and having wifi issues.

I agree that the camera leaves a lot to be desired (at least the software that powers it). I can't speak to your WiFi issues, as I haven't had any problems with mine.
10 meter GPS accuracy is about 35 feet. So if you have a small yard it's entirely possible you will show up in your neighbor's yard with 10m accuracy.
My neighbors yard is a good 75 to 80 feet away.

I am sitting inside my house, but the location was nearly perfect. Right over my house (albeit in a different room). Oddly, it said accurate to within 60 meters. Not sure why yours would report 10m accuracy and be so far off and mine would report 60m accuracy and be almost spot on.
Anybody else play fruit ninja? Lagggggggy. Definitely going back.
return it.

To many good phones to keep a phone that does not make you happy or one that you have to make excuses for.
Same boat as u were, went ahead and scooped up the SGS II.

i fixed my camera gripes with camera zoom fx
my gps is really accurate, or atleast accurate enough for me, no problems there
i have no lag issues, but i don't play a lot of intensive games
i love my vehicle dock
my problems are with:
email continuously syncing, even with it set to manual fetch and push disabled
can't see the capacitive buttons when i need to, in the dark, it's fine. light, they don't need to be off, but in situations in between, it's too dark to see them, but not dark enough to trigger the led's behind them
the fact that motorola doesn't seem to really want to bother supporting the atrix 2. they haven't updated their site on accessories being available, or anywhere else for that matter. there's not even a hint of an update or them even addressing the vast amount of issues that owners have been complaining about. i would assume that 100% of their focus is on the razr.
development has gone no where fast.
however, there's nothing really worth exchanging it for on att (at least not at the same price-point. i played around with the hd7s in the store and really liked it, however, it's not a 4g phone. not that it matters since i've never hit over 5mb with my atrix 2. but the device was nice and the ui was smooth. the infuse would be a step down software wise. lg thrill, well, it's an lg...

Guess I just got a good one. Only thing I've changed had been the camera n camera zoom fx work great. Maybe you got a bad one and a swap will fix your problems.
Possibly. Camera zoom fx even lags for me.

Try using Camera Zoom FX app it really improved the quality of my pics Im really enjoying this phone but these are issues that are concerning me im hoping soon there will be a bootloader unlock too Id love to see this hardware put through its paces with some custom ROMs
I would try returning it If I were you and having all of these issues ( havent seen em tho Ive had no lag in any games ive played) and see if a different device would work better if not then just upgrade and sell no need keeping a phone you're not really happy with it.
Gunnyman sounds like you def have hardware issues. I'd take it back for a switch and play around with a new one before leaving the store and make sure it doesn't have any problems as well

AT&T One XL Prototype - Information

Since I acquired this device, I believe this is the appropriate section to post all the benchmarks I've collected so far. As well as answer any questions. Feel free to post any questions and I'll answer them as soon as I can.

is the camera as fast as the int one x?
and battery stats whenever you can get them.
thank you for the post
Is the notification LED still there? Seems like that thing has a tendency to disappear if the carriers get their way.
Also curious about the battery. Any idea if it's the same as in the international One X, or increased a bit? Looking forward to information on how the battery performs.
I have been following the battery thread in the HTC One X forum, and there appears to be something funky going on - only about 3-3.5 hours of screen time with active use, but more than 6 hours with video playback and over 10 hours with the screen set to never time out and just left out on a desk. So it's not the screen that's sucking up all the juice. Hopefully we'll get better battery life with the S4 as opposed to what they're seeing with the Tegra 3, which seems to be the likely candidate.
how about nfc... does it look like AT&T disabled Google Wallet to prepare for ISIS ?

Hows the reception/signal? According to the software you're using and to this thread, you're using an older radio. Just wondering if its working perfectly for you of if there was some echoing or data drops.
Did you have the one x to compare both?
Wow, Fantastic Questions! I'll answer what I can at the moment.
Notification LED: Yes it's there, so no worries about that.
Data Connection: Haven't had my data drop yet and I've been in both New York and New Jersey. Seems very very stable and I've been getting great speeds on "4G"
NFC: NFC is there, Google Wallet is downloadable from the Google Play store, However, I think Google still has it locked to certain carriers, so I get a message saying it's not certified for my device/carrier.
Camera: Just as fast as the One X as far as I can tell. It's very very quick. I've compared it to the recorded times for the One X and it's almost dead on as far as how fast the camera boots and takes pictures.
Battery: I'll update the thread later tonight with some Battery stats. Overall, I feel like the device lasts through the day with no issues going about 2 days or so. However, I'm not in an area that has 4G LTE deployed yet. This is all on "4G"
is it confirmed that there are no micro SD slot?

I live in Northern Jersey and also, I've only seen dropbox on there as far cloud storage goes.
Any way to confirm if it really does have the AWS frequency for T-Mobile's 3G(I refuse to call it 4G) network? There are conflicting reports where the HTC website says it does but the FCC filing doesn't seem to show the frequency.
I couldn't tell you offhand, I would probably need to get a tmobile sim and test it. Unless there's an app out there that grabs that information.

Can you access service mode? I recall long ago when you're in service mode you can choose which bands can be activated and with that it should show AWS
You can use this as a reference: http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...rk-frequency-your-samsung-i9000-galaxy-s.html
Whats the battery capacity? The same as One X (1800mAh) or is it the one from One S (1650mAh)?
Battery is same as the One X, 1800mah

I'm not so sure. If the OP can check that little "door" at the top right of the phone slightly towards the back, that may be a microSD expansion slot.
