Can't write to sdcard after 3.2 update. - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just a few days ago I installed the ota update on my UK wifi only Xoom but now can't write to the sdcard.
Any suggestions welcome.

This is normal and is a Moto decision (bad one)...
Thus, some apps like File Manager HD will allow you to write files one your SD card, but then you will not be able to delete them...

Hi
Do you mean the file transfer failed or the installation? How are you trying to move them over? Could be a couple of things:
1. I have found that the stock web browser has a bug in it where sometimes downloading a .zip file downloads as a useless .bin file and hence wont install. Try downloading from a PC and then manually moving the .apk file to your sd card for installation.
2. You have not allowed the installation of applications outside of the Market. Go to Menu> Settings> Applications and make sure 'Unknown sources' is ticked.
3. Make sure you extract the .apk from the zip file before putting it on your sd card, or use a file explorer app that can install apps from within a zip. I think Androzip can do this.
Hi again,
I downloaded the zip file on pc and tried 2 copy the zip file on 2 SD card but kept failing so do I have 2 extract the file 1st then put it on SD card

When you say failing, exactly what is happening. Can you please describe your procedure step-by-step and quote any error messages. I'm not sure what is going wrong here.
Ok, ive got the zip file on my computer SD card in and I find the zip on my downloads folder and right click and copy then go in2 SD card and right click paste it says.copying then after a few minutes it says it can't find it and won't copy it in2 my SD card

^ Unzip the contents first on your PC. Connect your phone to your PC, select "Disk Drive". A window should pop up , showing the contents of your SD card. Using your PC, make a new folder on your SD card, then copy the apk's from your PC to your SD card. To install the apk's you'll need apps like Astro which will allow you to browse the contents of your SD card and give you the option to install them. Use Astro to locate the new folder you made and open it to view contents. Select the appropriate skin apk and install it. Once installed you will be able to find the new skins at "Skins" under Customization. This is assuming you haven't recieved the new HTC over the air system update, because if you did you won't be able to install the new skins anymore ( which is what happened to me, and unfortunately I don't know how to roll back the update ).
Ok thanks I will try it soon

Replacing the Sd card the proper way

Hi all. I just bought a new 32gb microsd from samsung. My question is:
How would i go about and switch this card with the original? What are the absolutely necessary files or folders that need to be migrated from the old card to the new one? How do i format the new card?
Please be specific in answers coz i have not a lot of experience with android. I come from a touch hd with winmo.
Thanks in advance

Hi,
Use a card reader.
Place the old card in the PC,open it and press control A,control C,and then control V into a new folder on your PC.
Take the new card ,put it in the PC,right click, format to fat 32.
Open the folder on your PC with all your saved old card stuff, and press control A,control C,and then control V into the new card.
Job done.
Thanks for the prompt response. I was hoping of doing a bit of cleaning and that's why i asked which are the absolutely necessary files and folders coz i have a feeling that the old one is a bit polluted with all kinds of folders which i probably dont use. Thanks again though.

Hi,
I saw someone say that if you just put your own stuff on the card ,Android will place the files it needs on the card as well.
Not tested it,but you could try it first.
Do what I suggested anyway, then try it.
No harm will be done.
Ok. I will try the last suggestion first and will post my findings in a few hours. I am at work now. Greetz

I just switched devices, and simply copied images and a few history files etc onto my pc as described above, reformatted card (hence wiping it) and put in new device. Your Rom will build everything else, then you can copy existing files from pc.
Sensation XE tbc
i did this:
I rebooted in recovery. unmounted the sdcard. took the old one out, put the new one in and formated it in recovery. rebooted phone and voila... card recognized in phone and clean. Android put itself the needed files to it. i just copied later my content into it via phone.
Thanks everybody for your replies.
Problem with upgrade SD Card - lost favorites
I recently upgraded by SD card and did exactly as outlined above. All seems ok except I lost the image album called favorites. I use this album often so this is a pain. Does anyone know what happened or what file needs to be recopied somewhere? My devices is rooted. Also, is there a favorites folder somewhere or is it just a tag? If yes, where is the location?
Thanks

No SD card!

Okay here is an odd problem I cannot seem to fix. When I go to download an apk from anywhere ether than the market, I get an error... No SD card and 'an SD card is required to download... blah blah. '
... but I have not only the internal SD in my o3d but also a 2gb external card inserted.
Both have plenty of free space and are showing fine in storage option.
This seems to be a recent thing... any ideas?

Very odd. I have to use my PC to download em at the moment as a work around.
Ah well, bring on the ICS/CM9 ROMS!
Download apk´s outside of the market? Within the Rom that´s giving you trouble, have you tried this to fix the no-sdcard message :
1) downloading the apk´s using different browsers (like Opera or Dolphin).
2) doing a full factory reset : settings--privacy--factory reset (you have to backup your data and apps first).
Just enter the browser options and set a location for downloads. It doesn't have any by default and that's the problem.
gonzgeorge yes have tried both of those but cheers.
Beriaru... oh what a clever one you are ;-). Thank you!! Can't believe it was so simple.

[Q] Make SD Card Writeable

Ok, I'm rooted with WeakSauce, so I thought I would try to get the SD Card fully writeable so I can use it for titanium backups.
I tried the SDFix app from the play store, and even though it said it was successful TB still says it can't write to the folder, and all file explorer tools are not able to delete folders on the SD Card (and yes I made sure root was ON in the file explorers).
Any other thoughts or tricks to make the SD Card fully writeable?

To get tb working on external sd I just made a backup then moved folder to external sd. Went into tb menu, preference, and backup location. Detect folder on whole device and set the new location as external sd.Hope that helps
I tried something similar to that, but next time I tried to actually do a backup it failed saying insufficient space. But I assume it really just couldn't write to it as there is 50gb free.
I'll try again and report back.
Edit: nope. I can't even copy the folder over to the SD Card, the write is denied.

I can't write to micro SD either after doing the weaksauce root
The real fix will come when you can edit the resources file needed to add the correct user groups to the sd. That file sits in /system/etc and is not reachable with just root. Need to have an insecure boot (kernel) in order to remove the write protection in the way.

It's going to be this..
However write protection won't allow it yet.
1. Using a root-enabled file manager, navigate to /system/etc/permissions
2. Edit platform.xml and find the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.
3. Add an additional group definition for this permission... .<group gid="media_rw" />
4. Save the changes to the file.
5. Restart.

Titanium Backup *will* backup to the internal sdcard and ONLY the internal sdcard right now (on the Verizon HTC One M8. See this post. That directory location worked for me. Issues regarding writing to a removable sdcard are a well documented limitation of KitKat 4.4.2 for unrooted phones (or partially rooted ones, as in our case).
ok

Can you elaborate on this? I am also encountering this problem on my M8, but am pretty sure it worked fine on older Android variants.

With KitKat, Google changed the way Android accesses removable media, allegedly as a "security measure." The result is that fewer apps have the ability to write to the sdcard. I believe that there are a few M8 custom ROMs that override this "feature" but I don't know which ones.
My name's Harold and I'm a flashaholic....
Apps can only write to folders that are associated with (created by) that app in KitKat (internal and external). It's not specific to the One M8, it's specific to the operating system (now). And I don't mean you can have an app that creates a folder anywhere on the SD card, it can only be created in that apps files directory (like data/data/com/appname/ or /emulated/0/data/com/appname, etc). Any app can write to the SD card (you actually don't need to set this permission in your manifest anymore, IIRC), but it can only do it within its own directory.

SD Card - Write / Full Access & Internal Storage Issues on Rooted A9

Hey Guys -
Recently got my A9 and love it. Was about to go with the Note, but when I found it couldn't be rooted plus no sd card that was it. Anyways, this may be more of a Marshmallow question; but wanted to ask...
Is there a current method to get full access to the sd card system wide or in all apps? On my Shield tablet (5.01 rooted), I could obtain this on its sd by editing the system platform.xml and adding the following line under two similar ones in the section WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE:
<group gid="media_rw" />
Once done and rebooted, any app including file managers had full write access to the sd.
I looked at the platform.xml on my A9 / Marshmallow and it didn't even have a WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE section. I considered adding the section plus either all 3 or just the 1 line above, but didn't want to risk messing anything up due to the new way 6 deals with storage so thought I'd post.
I do realize that you can format a card to Internal storage, but seemingly you don't get to use your phones internal storage if you do. I did try to do it anyways, but had issues.
I put in a brand new 32gb class 10 and attempted to format it internal and it said it was too slow. I proceeded with formatting it, but did not transfer data when prompted. When done, it listed the card as corrupted. I had a 2nd new card of the same model so put it in and repeated the process and it said it too was corrupted. Just ordered a 64gb UHS-3 which I plan to use instead, but would rather have full access as mentioned above.
Does anyone have more info on either of these topics? Thanks!
check this... http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-a9/help/format-sd-card-internal-storage-issue-t3261842
Yeah, thanks - read that already, but after reread it seems the corruption is due to my A9 still having s-on?
If so, that solves the corruption issue, but what about the platform.XML / full access? Is that simply not a possibility? Thanks
Sent from my HTC One A9 using Tapatalk
somebody said........
in another forum that other users have the same problem with rooted devices. They say after going back to stock there is no problem to format the ext. as int. Storage.
maybe its not just to have s-off ... otherwise root s-on... I think is an encryption problem.... sorry about my english....
hope a fix soon....
Yea I went root last night and notice i can no longer see my 32gb sandisk card :/
Hmm, so youre saying its not that I need to be s-off, but that to use internal storage I cannot be rooted? If true, are there any known workarounds?
Either way, my plan was to use what I do on my Shield anyways which was obtain full access to the SD card (standard format) then use FolderMount to copy and create symlinks for apps and media. That brings me back to platform.XML question. Anyone know more about it with Marshmallow?
Sent from my HTC One A9 using Tapatalk
Hi,
Maybe a side effect from rooting :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64197169&postcount=3275
Cheers
Yeah, seems to be based on few posts I read on that link plus other posts. I rooted by downloading the boot image for AT&T A9 which I flashed via fastboot, installed TWRP, then SuperSU. Is there an alternative method for the A9 currently? Anyone tried the Sunshine app/service which supposedly allows s-off for A9? Wonder if that or whatever other s-off method would fix it. Would STILL would prefer bypassing internal storage altogether and having native full access.
Bad news...
Yesterday, I installed Sunshine and was able to achieve s-off. After rebooting, I found encryption was messed up so performed a full wipe. Once done, I re-rooted (copied su.img to data partition via twrp then installed SuperSU) so then had a properly running system which was rooted AND s-off. Finally, I got in my brand new Sandisk microSDXC 64gb UHS-1 card which has speed up to 95ms/s.
I inserted new card in phone, then formatted it internally via Settings. Towards the end of the format, the same "slow card" notification appeared and once complete it still showed the card as "Corrupted.". I was promoted to copy / move my data to it, but didn't so there's a chance it may work - just report the cards status incorrectly.
I know its not due to a bad card as it is the 3rd brand new one I've tried (other two were Samsung 32gb Evo) with the exact same results. My hope was that s-off would make it work, but guess not.
Think there will ever be a way to be rooted & have internal storage work properly?
Thoughts? Thanks!
