Replacing the Sd card the proper way - HTC Sensation

Hi all. I just bought a new 32gb microsd from samsung. My question is:
How would i go about and switch this card with the original? What are the absolutely necessary files or folders that need to be migrated from the old card to the new one? How do i format the new card?
Please be specific in answers coz i have not a lot of experience with android. I come from a touch hd with winmo.
Thanks in advance

Hi,
Use a card reader.
Place the old card in the PC,open it and press control A,control C,and then control V into a new folder on your PC.
Take the new card ,put it in the PC,right click, format to fat 32.
Open the folder on your PC with all your saved old card stuff, and press control A,control C,and then control V into the new card.
Job done.

Thanks for the prompt response. I was hoping of doing a bit of cleaning and that's why i asked which are the absolutely necessary files and folders coz i have a feeling that the old one is a bit polluted with all kinds of folders which i probably dont use. Thanks again though.

Hi,
I saw someone say that if you just put your own stuff on the card ,Android will place the files it needs on the card as well.
Not tested it,but you could try it first.
Do what I suggested anyway, then try it.
No harm will be done.

Ok. I will try the last suggestion first and will post my findings in a few hours. I am at work now. Greetz

I just switched devices, and simply copied images and a few history files etc onto my pc as described above, reformatted card (hence wiping it) and put in new device. Your Rom will build everything else, then you can copy existing files from pc.
Sensation XE tbc

i did this:
I rebooted in recovery. unmounted the sdcard. took the old one out, put the new one in and formated it in recovery. rebooted phone and voila... card recognized in phone and clean. Android put itself the needed files to it. i just copied later my content into it via phone.
Thanks everybody for your replies.

Problem with upgrade SD Card - lost favorites
I recently upgraded by SD card and did exactly as outlined above. All seems ok except I lost the image album called favorites. I use this album often so this is a pain. Does anyone know what happened or what file needs to be recopied somewhere? My devices is rooted. Also, is there a favorites folder somewhere or is it just a tag? If yes, where is the location?
Thanks

I could really use a hand with this pickle

okay, so i've found myself in a bit of a pickle. Recently I've been running the CM7 nightly's, but today I tried out the RoyalGinger rom and I believe it either corrupted my SD card or it's blocking my SD card from being used/read.
Tried several times to reformat it but each time it said 'checking SD card', but the weird thing is I have an active wireless connection, but I'm not getting texts. I can download from market, get on Facebook, etc, but my texts won't come in until I reboot the phone. A few times I booted it up and it wouldn't allow me to even see my homescreen because it'd pop up with EVERY app force closing (including google services, framework, etc), I was able to get back to my homescreen by clearing by Dalvik Cache luckily, however I'm still unable to do most anything. I went in to wipe/restore but it says cannot find SD card, directory invalid, cannot mount, etc.
Is there a way to reformat my SD card through terminal? If so could I get the code procedure for it? or anyone have any ideas other than picking up a new micro (which isn't a big deal but I'm strapped on money til Friday) but i'd still prefer to know that it's JUST my SD card and not my phone memory. Anyone? Anyone? Beuler? Beuler? Thanks in advance. I'm really sorry if I posted this in the wrong section, but c'mon, everyone gets one.
Ok so do u have a stock backup rom? Ide say go to rom manager and go to recovery and whipe etc.. Then install that stock back on it.....And can ur sd card even read at all? Just get any.file manager and check your sd.

I think I have a backup rom of CM6, but not an actual android stock rom. It won't allow me because it says 'must have an SD card inserted' then it says must have clockwork mod recovery installed, which I do, the current version. Now that it says that I'm afraid to boot my phone into recovery, and I can't really tell if my SD card will read. I was able to use my file manager and the entire SD folder is blank.
ten minutes later: still boots into recovery, none of my backups are available on it. I was thinking about downloading a rom from the phone and trying that way, but I don't know if it'd save to the (apparently unreadable) SD card.
Ok try this...... Find out what recovery you use 3.0.0.5 or the normal 2.5.1.4 for froyo then download a rom thats the same recovery as the one u have on it right now...... If its the same as your cyanogenmod 6 then install that from the recovery manually!!!
if its not then download a rom that is and make sure you use a file manager to see if the download sticks in your sdcard. And if it doesnt stick then......your problem sir might be a corrupted sdcard, or a phone that cant read your sd.
Hope its not either or, so give it a shot.....
And ur supposed to have a stock backup as soon as you root and switch roms man Lol makes life easier

It sounds like he doesn't have access to his sdcard. It doesn't matter how many backups you make if that's the case...
If you happen to have a sdcard reader or a microsd usb adapter you could format it in windows, copy the files you need, and start again. Also did you try connecting to your pc and seeing if it's readable that way? You can format the card if your pc recognizes it. If you have adb set up you can push the recovery image to the phone without a sdcard. But once again without a working sdcard you won't be able to flash a new rom.
Hey guys I'm pretty sure it's just my SD card. I tried saving an image, just to test it and it says 'an SD card is required to download images.bin', so I'm HOPING it's just my SD Card, however my notifications are working properly so I can at least deal with it til friday, if it IS my SD card reader in the phone, well... I have a plan for that, however due to already technically breaking that I shouldn't go into it. Thanks to you guys for taking the time to post and if you know anything else that might help me I'd gladly accept it.

Hi, I have a reader on my laptop but not the adapter, so I can't tell and yes, you were right, I can't see any of my backups (which I have my stock, then cm6 and cm7) so I either need to find an adapter or get a new SD card. luckily I pulled all of my camera images off my phone last night when I put the new rom .zip on the phone sd, so I'm not really worried about 'losing' anything as long as I get my phone working back in proper condition.
Well that happened to me before as well.. All i did was replace sd cards lets the phone do its thing flash a different rom like CM6 or CM7 and then once replaced i got the adapter for my old sd card reformatted through windows and put it right back in and it worked.. So try that?
Ill have to. Thanks a lot guys I do appreciate any comments and suggestions and ill be picking up a new sd later thia week to fix it but can amyone recommend a good brand sd to pick up? the apparently failed one was a samsung 8gb

I usually use sandisk so yeah try that?
Something similar happened to me. Your SD card likely has a bad or corrupted file. I used Win7 to copy over what I could to a folder in my PC. The Win7 automatically refused to copy over the corrupted files while carrying over everything else. In XP, your file transfer stops and you have to try again to ensure you have everything that's not corrupted transferred over.
After copying, I just went ahead and formatted the SD to FAT32, transferred everything back, installed on my phone, and voila.
Go into recovery and partition the card. You'll lose everything on it but it should be useable after that

[Q] Micro SD Card question

so my phone deleted everything off of my sdcard and you know how your pics and everything is litterly like your world or life. how can i restore all my files? or am i totally f'ed?
i was also wondering is there something for your phone like how your computer can be restored to a date before. is there a way or program to do this to your phone and micro SD memory card??
please help me i really dont wanna have to redo everything on my sdcard again):
If the card was wiped its gone and I don't think the phone makes restore points like a computer does. Best you can do is back up your rom periodically but that wont bring back the SD card data.

I'm not sure how your phone would've done that; that usually requires a deliberate action. Unless you somehow converted the filesystem on the sdcard, it should be a VFAT filesystem. Basically the filesystem from Windows 95, 98, ME, etc. I can't think of an easy way to recover that. There might be a tool out there to do it.
Hopefully someone else has a better answer.

Ouch. I'm afraid the data's probably lost, man. If it partitioned the card it probably wrote a new partition table. There might be some file recovery utilities you can run from Windows to try and recover the files but I don't know how successful they would be.
I thought I read somewhere there was an app to retrieve old deleted data from a sd card somewhere in these sgs4g forums. a guy did almost the same thing and said he got most of it back, try searching some key words

Given that it got re-partitioned, though....
Unless you do a Full Format, or fill the card with new files, most of the time when stuff deletes, the index information is removed or something like that, and it's just invisible, until it's overwritten. So if you can find a recovery program it should be able to find the data. Last time I looked there weren't many free ones, but it's worth a google search.
I agree with goddi2010. I also remember reading that one of our members had a similar problem and was able to recover lost data. He even mentions what he did/used to recover the data.
Somewhere in our forum the help you need is there. Good luck searching and when you find the info please let us know how it worked out for you...
Sorry I can't be more specific.
I just used the program Recuva ( it's free ). Install it on your computer and plug your phone in or put the card in a reader then run Recuva and select the quick scan and it will bring up everything that has been deleted and it will tell you if it can recover it or not. It has work for me multiple times.

[Q] Help! Formatted sd card

I screwed up bad last night when i was half asleep using fix permissions in recovery, and hit format sd card. by the time i realized what i was doing it was too late, i need to recover my files as close to exactly as they were as i can, i used unformatter pro, but it didnt get all the files, and the ones it did recover where grouped in folders named after the extension, and the names were just ordered numbers. im dying here because all my titanium backups, nandroids, and the treasure among treasures, chad goodmans rls 9 evo 3d kernel (those of you who dont know about his kernels, they are the best, truly works of art, and it is no longer available due to soure code discrepancies) I am dying here, any help would be a godsend.

so your gonna have to reboot a few times it will build the necessary system files. If your were partioned you'll have to repartition and reflash your rom The good news is i have that kernel so here ya go. There's a bunch in the file but you should see what you need. after you get everything running again put an e3d folder on your desktop and copy all the files from your sd to it so there's no more chance of losing it. follow the link.....http://db.tt/3gKd6uRo

No media found at all at both HTC Music, HTC Gallery, Google Music and Google Gallery

Hello wonderful developers,
Here I am again with a neat problem that I haven't had before.
I like to flash. I'm one of the guys that actually likes flashing new roms enough to restore all apps one-by-one using TB. But today, something went Quietly Wrong. Well, flashing went just like usual, but now my phone can't find any media (Music, images, videos...) at all.
When I noticed the problem, I immedietly switched to a different rom, but the problem still persisted.
The weird thing is; I can still browse and launch my media using a file browser.
And what's a problem-thread without some specs:
System information:
Name: HTC Sensation Z710e (Pyramid, S-OFF)
Root: Superuser
Recovery: ClockworkMod Touch Recovery
Processor: Normal clock speed, see kernel
Kernel: Stock HTC Pyramid kernel with normal clock-speed
ROM: Android Revolution HD 6.7.3
Android-version: 4.0.3
I just noticed it started finding one song: The Pretender by the Foo Fighters. Altough I love that song, I would like to have some variation.
Ah, I made some calculations:
Every two days, one song gets added. My entire music collection contains 764 files.
764*2=1528 days. That makes 4.1 years.
I probably have a new phone by that day...
I'm sorry for bothering you, but can somebody please look into this?
Do you have a sd card reader? If so perhaps you can first check to see if your files are all there and available. Just a idea. If you don't have one you can get one for under 5 dollars. That's a handy thing to have. You just pop out the sd card put in reader and put reader in computer. You can then move files , add them or delete if necessary. I often use my reader, comes in really handy in deleting pg58img files too . This is what I would try. This way you can see exactly what is on the card. It's just a thought... Hope this helps in some way. Best wishes and I hope you get this issue resolved soon . Good luck to you.

The problem is there on all roms I've tried. Removing the cache didn't do the trick.
Have this issued too, can someone help.
I also have the same issue when flashing JB roms. Try transferring all your important files to your PC. Flash the SD card. Perform a wipe. Then transfer the files again to your SD card. It works all the time for me!
Ho had the same problem but you can try to unmount and mount again your micro sd, or you can try changing folder where did you put the files

Delete .nomedia files present in the sdcard.. You can do a simple search for this in es file explorer... First enable hidden files in es file explorer--settings then go back to root of sdcard and search for the file... You might some multiples of this file... Delete all of them and reboot and see

[Q] Root/SD card question

Ok, so I've rooted my Wildfire S, flashed CM7 on it, with the updated gapps files (gapps gb)
My question is this...Do I need to keep all those files on my SD card? Or can I remove them?
Also, having an "H" icon for my data is better than 3G, correct? everything I've read says that, but I'd like to know from a DAMN good source (you guys)

If you've installed all packages you shouldn't need to keep those on the sd card, but best to keep them on your computer in case you need them in the future.

Yeah the 'H' is for highspeed access, you'll get that in areas where you have best reception.
Thank you very much. Yeah I still have them on my computer, along with my backup.
I also have one more question, how do I make a partition on my SD card? And should I get a bigger one? I currently have a 2gb
Sent from my Wildfire S A510e using xda app-developers app
Not exactly sure of the context. Why do you want to create partitions?
If you are wanting to create an .ext3/.ext4 partition on which to install apps (I know people did this with the HTC Desire, because of the really low amount of onboard storage), the best tool for the job is a Linux based partition editor called GParted. Just download the live CD iso, burn it to a CD and boot from that.
You should get a new SD card yes.
A 32gb card will run you ~$20 brand new on ebay, just make sure your phone supports that capacity
Link2sd says to make sure you have a partition created on the SD card for whatever reason...I uninstalled it, and forgot what it said, but yeah....same reason. 512mb onboard storage = pure sh*t.
Edit: it says to do that for "symbolic link" whatever that means.
Sent from my Wildfire S A510e using xda app-developers app
Sure, well most apps like that will want an ext4 partition, which like I said can be created using GParted. Plenty of tutorials on youtube I'm sure for using GParted
Ok, thanks for all your help! It's greatly appreciated!
