When switching to recovery mode phone gets stuck on Google Logo - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i was trying to re-root my phone after an update i did with my nexus s. i was following the step by step root by allgamer http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545. i skip the unlock bootloader since it was already unlocked skipped to the flash img part and did it then after that i went to recovery. now it just get stuck at a google logo. if im right i had 2 recovery files in the tools folder, i didnt know another recovery img was in the folder so im guessing this is why it gets stuck, but im sort of new to rooting so im not sure what im suppose to do to fix it. thanks

stock ROM? try reflash recovery

yeah stock recovery. sorry for late reply been busy.
it seemed to fix itself but when i install clockwork recovery, it doesnt seem to work.
it just shows an exclamation mark "!" and a android figure.

[Q] SNS Recovery Img

Hello all,
Im trying to flash a new recovery image, but none seem to be working. Im not sure if you're familiar with the file names, but Ive tried "recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-crespo.zip" and "3101-orange.img"(j_rodd's modification of koush's). I tried to go to the source but it seems koush's site is down right now.
The phone is unlocked, however when I select recovery from the bootloader the phone shows a package unboxing image and then an android next to an exclamation in a triangle. Regular boot is fine.
Thanks in advance.
you're doing this in bootloader, right?
You have to be in bootloader, open cmd on computer and flash through there.
You can find 3.1.0.1 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988686

Are you on stock rom? if yes, then no matter how many times you flash the custom recovery(cwm or jrodd), once you reboot your phone and enter recovery, you'll always end up with stock recovery.( the image you are getting android next to triangle is that of the stock recovery)
what you should do is enter bootloader, fastboot flash ur recovery, and from there (without reboot) enter recovery directly. i would recommend you flash a custom rom.

Help! Nexus S 4G wont boot, boot animations loop!

Hi, hope Im not double posting or anything, but I havent found a solution to my problems yet.
I recently purchased Nexus S 4G, thinking it was working, but it is not. It powers up, but doesn't get to the main system. It sticks on the Nexus colorful flashing things and wont get past that. Sometimes it sticks on the Google logo. Is there anything I can check, or somehow restore it or something to get it to boot up? I can also get to the fast boot menu, but when I get there, and try recovery, it just gives me the sad dead Android with his tummy open with a red triangle.

If you can get into fastboot just flash CWM http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager and SU http://androidsu.com/superuser/
Put SU on phone SD card
Reboot phone into bootloader mode
Open a command prompt and go to the folder in where CWM is
Now execute this fastboot command to flash the CWM recovery. Change the filename to the file you have downloaded.
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.1.0-crespo4g.img
Now go to recovery.
There, using the options, navigate to the install the superuser zip file
Reboot.

Stuck in startup animation loop

I unlocked and rooted my tablet yesterday and everything appeared to be working fine. After using it for a couple hours and restarting it a few times it stopped working and is now locked in a boot loop. When I try boot the tablet it comes on and gets to the animation where the glint of light goes across the Asus logo but it does not finish and instead it stops there and I get the moving circles at the bottom. I've left it running there for several hours and it just hangs.
I've tried erasing the data and booting to linux but the same thing happens when I try either of those.
I've also tried flashing a number of different ROMs, but all that happens is it starts installing and then I get the Android guy on his side error screen.
I hadn't done anything to the ROM and was still running 10.6.1.14.4. I even downloaded that same ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2266519 but I get the same error message when I try flash that ROM.
I would really, REALLY appreciate any ideas at all - and thanks in advance for any suggestions.

this gonna sound odd but i had exact same prob when i rooted and flashed chromix rom. it went. what i did was flash it once with the rom with secure wipe, then i flashed again. and it got stuck at optimizing apps, then i tried reflashing couldnt get it to boot, what i ended up doing was using clockwork mod to factory reset my tablet, then had to restart, and reflash, this time it actually got to main screen. dont let it discharge/reboot for awhile as im bout to post a issue im having with it. but thats what i did to make it work for me.

I'm not sure I understand --- how do I get to the clockwork mod if i can't get past the startup animation? And I've tried a bunch of roms with secure wipe and i get an error from every one of them.
didnt you install clockwork mod first?

the thing i found showed me to installed the clockwork mod first before i did any flashing, i rooted device then i flashed once clockwork mod was installed, i had to root, then install rom manager and goo manager, from within there i installed the clockwork recovery script/mod then i proceeded to flash chromi-X DEODEX.
Did you flash the correct bootloader? I had the same problem, look for my posts in the last few pages of ChromiX.

Seems to me you installed Asus factory stock rom JB 4.2.1 (10.6.1.14.4), which means you have the latest bootloader, then you unlocked and rooted your device, however, you never installed any custom recovery like TWRP or CWM (clockmod). Now your device is boot looping. You need to boot into stock recovery by turn off your device, hold volume down and power button until you see white text on the screen, now release both buttons, you should see 3 icons (RCK, Android and wipe data). NOW you are in fastboot mode. Let me know at least you can get that far, before we continue....

buhohitr -- You're exactly right. I can boot into stock recovery. When I select Android or wipe data it goes back to the animation screen and hangs up. When I select RCK it goes to the Android guy and says installing update but then it show him fallen over and the word Error. I've tried RCK with a memory card that has a number of different ROMs on it but the same thing keeps happening.

Give this a try, the factory Asus firmware zip file that you downloaded, unzip the file, you should see another zip file, rename this new zip file to "EP201_768_SDUPDATE.zip" (without quotation), then copy it to the root of your sdcard then boot into stock recovery and execute the RCK again. Make sure you don't have any other zips laying around in the root of your sdcard.
You are truly a god among men.

THIS WORKED!!! Thanks so much. I was really worried I had bricked it.
So now one last question --- WHY did that work? Is there somewhere I could go to read up on this kind of stuff? I've tried surfing the XDA forum but there's a lot of stuff like this where someone gets there problem solved, but not much explaining why something worked so I can learn more about it.

Somehow the stock recovery was reinstalled on your tablet, thus letting this method work. It however does not on CWM or TWRP. All you did was manually reinstall a stock rom back onto your tablet. How it got the stock recovery is beyond me unless you flashed a stock ROM from CWM and didnt realize what you were installing.

Since the JB 4.2.1 upgrade, this is the most reliable method to install Asus full stock firmware. Also, since you're unlocked, let root the device by go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230763 download the tool and root it. Once rooted, I suggest that you should install TWRP custom recovery, by download Goomanager from the market, open the app and tab on the 3 little boxes on the top right hand corner, select "install recovery scripts" , this will shutdown your device and install custom TWRP recovery script, once this installed, you can download "rebooter" from the market and this app has many options, one of them is allowed you easily boot into custom recovery.

[Q] I think I've bricked my phone, please help!

So, I got my new phone today, and immediately rooted it. This was the first time I'd ever done something like this to any phone, so I was really in the dark on the whole matter. I managed to root it successfully, and proceeded to install Cyanogen, which took ages to install, and I remembered that I'd forgotten to wipe the phone, so I restarted, went into recovery mode and ACCIDENTALLY WIPED ALL OF MY FILES with TWRP. Once I realised what I'd done, I panicked, restarting the phone, which landed me, stuck, on the 'WARNING, BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED' screen. I panicked again, and went to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542219
And tried to follow everything, but I didn't really understand what I was doing and was in a state of panic. I can go into details of what I did if needs be, but long story short, whenever I boot up my phone I get the bootloader unlocked screen and do not boot into the OS. I cannot also access the Recovery window, and it has the android mascot lying on its back with a red triangle.
All I want to do is fix my phone, if anyone could guide me through this, I'd be forever grateful.
tl;dr: F**ked up, possible bricked my phone and don't know what to do.
Many thanks for any response.

Since you managed to root, im assuming you have ADB and Fastboot on your PC?
Download a recovery.img file from XDA. I recommend this one ----> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2639583
Place the recovery.img file in the same file folder/location as your fastboot and ADB files.
Open a command window from the same location as the adb/fastboot/recover.img files.
In the command window type "fastboot device" and make sure some type of serial number shows up in the window.
Once you know your device is connected via fastboot, type: "fastboot flash recovery __________.img"
Where the ______.img is, you would put the name of the recovery.img file.
For example, the file that gets downloaded if you download philz touch (the link i gave you), is called "recovery.img"
So in fastboot you would type "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
Once thats been flashed, you should be able to boot into recovery, sideload a rom, and flash it to your device.
Good Luck!

Need help with boot loop

I had this droid razr maxx hd a long time ago. I used to be pretty savvy with rooting and whatnot. At one point i rooted the phone enabled native tether and even unlocked the bootloader. however I never flashed a custom recovery. suddenly one day the phone started boot looping. I simply switched phones. now my new phone is broken and i need to get this boot loop fixed. trying to do a recovery simply ends up with it trying to boot again and loop. sometimes it shows the robot with "no command" under it. so thats not possible.
when i select ap fastboot i get device is unlocked status code 3.
So i should be able to flash something to it and get out of this bootloop right? can someone point me to a noob friendly tutorial to try and fix this?
if any more info is needed let me know
Thanks!

Just download the drivers for this device and install them. Then download and install rsd lite and install that. Then download the the stock firmware make sure it is the right one and flash it with rsd lite after that you will have to reroot the device. If you don't know what version of firmware you had just post a pic of your device while in ap fastboot bootloader and I can let you know.

If you had a custom recovery that you could mount while in recovery. Have you tried adb.
