skype upto no good again - Thunderbolt General

I noticed lately that my battery life has been deminishing and thought "oh crap... my battery is starting to die..."
but then I noticed that skype seems to be constantly reconnecting and checked battery usage. skype was using 42% battery thanks to the constant reconnect b.s.
I tried re-installing and it keeps doing it to.
/me blames htc. ;P

Why use swype then if its a battery hog.

skype yo.. not swype.
rather then have a $100+ bill each month, I just use the basic 200 minute plan & then pay $2.99/month for unlimited calls with skype.
I know you can make free calls with google voice/fring/etc, but call quality just sucked too much. it's still a bit 'blah' at times with skype, but overall best quality.

Just want to make sure we are all on the same page here.

so this wonderful phone we all have is a little... Buggy... I was one of those lucky people who wasn't having any issues with their phones now all of a sudden it gets a little laggy and the screen well shut off and not come back on (sometimes if I hit the power button repeatedly it will come back)... It kinda upsets me because I thought I had a good one... It was running fine after root, and after NVflash... It was after I started different kernels and roms that I had issues... Now I am running rooted stock with no other add ons and I am still having issues...
Question time.
Sounds like I am having the same issues as a lot of other people. True?
Should I get a replacement (sounds like a lot of the replacements are duds too) or just wait to see what the update brings?
I love this phone... I don't need perfect, just stable...

Same exact thing happened to me. One minute it was a perfect little baby, and next thing you know the booger starts acting up.
I was happy in the beginning when it gave me an awesome experience and was wondering why people are complaining about such an awesome device, then it struck me out of nowhere and began rebooting like crazy.
I want to ride this beast to the bitter end... I am hoping that the end is MUCH further down the road... so as far as we know, the "update" will be fixing most o these issues... i guess I am going to hold off on the replacement... seems like those have the same issues too...
And now the battery is heating up like crazy... I don't like this! Why it's this happening?

That happened on my old G2x, the new one doesn't heat up abnormally, but it does have more light leakage that is obviously noticeable. Gonna get another one when they receive the old one.

Ill leave my WiFi off all day tomorrow, then post a screenshot of my battery statistics (not the ones provided by Android) but more accurate ones from a app called "Battery Monitor" that gives a break down of use and what you had enabled. I don't want you to think I'm a liar or anything. I guess you could call me lucky but I have had nothing but good experiences so far. I haven't had any reboots, no lag, no freezing and great battery life. Probably better battery life than any other Android device Iv'e ever used. I take my phone off the charger at 7AM and don't return it until 9PM. Throughout the day I am making phone calls, sending texts, surfing the web, reading news from 4 different apps and playing some games. I don't know why anyone would lie about there battery life but maybe some people who say they only get 5 hours of battery life are just plain lying? See what I did there?
But does anyone else have a battery that is heating up for no reason? Should I look into a new battery or possibly a new phone?

Nah, the only time my battery heats up is when I am charging the phone and at the same time playing a graphically intensive game. Even then it doesn't heat up to the point of being uncomfortable.

Yeah I see..but I'm not lying. I simply cannot believe that people actually get good battery life because I've had more than one phone and it exhibits the battery characteristics as the last ones. I wish I could experience what some people say, but it simply does not happen unless I'm on wifi. If only the phone didn't eat percents while screen off...

It also depends on how much your 4G signal fluctuates so it depends on your area. If your constantly going from edge to 4G then that is using up more battery than me if I am always getting a good 4G signal. The more work your radio has to do the more battery it will use. The phone is going to eat up percentages when the display is off but if it's eating up "Display" percentage then I would say you have a problem. If your device is in standby most ofthe day then "Cell Standby" will be at the top on the percentage list. It's doing what it's supposed to do. If there was something wrong, then display would be at the top of the list. Next time you take your phone off of the charger, play a game for 20 minutes right away then make a 10 minute phone call. At this point you should see "Display" and "Voice Calls" at the top and "Cell Standby" the bottom. If not then something is wrong. I know there are many people with bad battery's and ones who have had problems with multiple units. I am just not one of them.

Saving battery life

Hi all.
Looking for some serious help. Coming from a Samsung vibrant. I need help with how to save battery life on the sensation. I have been off charger for 5 hours and 51 minutes and am down to 41%. Is this normal? I have been only texting really. I got my data from battery monitor.
Thanks in advance. Anyway to make this better?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
It all depends on what you're using the phone for. I'm at 55% after 12 hours. yesterday I got 17 hours. if all you're doing us texting then no,thats not normal. but I suspect you're probably doing more with it than you realize since its a new toy.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
He prolly has running wifi as well?
Settings > Wireless and networks > Wifi settings > [MENU BUTTON] > Advanced > Wifi sleep policy > After 15 minutes
Stop Android from phoning home and you'll save greatly on battery life.
Best way I've found to prevent battery drain, is to stop Android from phoning home.
Once you use an app like Autostarts to stop unnecessary things from starting up all the time on their own and also block a couple ports that are not always needed via an app like DroidWall, you'll see great battery life. Also see other details in that link of things I turned off to increase battery life amoung other benefits.
For now, I can only speak for seeing the difference while using a Nexus One ROM on my HD2, but I have way better battery life, GPS lock times and faster device boot ups than ever before.
This is yet another one of the reasons I must wait till the Sensation is rooted and unlocked. Because I'm not using it while it's running things I can't better manage, so they don't drain my battery.

Well to be honest for the 8 hours I'm at work, I use it light. texting, a few calls and about 30 minutes of reading pulse and playing games. However the next 8-9 hours I would consider moderate to heavy use. I have no monitors or anything running, just running straight out of the box.
I'm at 34% after 14.5 hours today.
I charged it fully the first day, ran it to 0, then charged it fully again last night.

I suppose draining could have helped but I have no way of knowing for sure

Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
I think mine's even worse. Phone was off charger at 100% at 11am, by 1:30PM it's already down to 80%ish. By 4PM it was down to 40%ish, got it charged up to about 70%ish around 6PM, by midnight I was around 6% again.
So I think I'm losing around 10%/hr. That's gotta be abnormal, and the battery gets really hot too. At the moment, I have several speculations:
1. Death grip causing the phone to work harder to find signal, and tmo's coverage kinda sucks in my town
2. I have defective unit/battery
3. Some apps behind the scene are killing it. But I've checked what's running behind, even turned off unnecessary stuff using autorun manager. Auto sync is turned of only for gmails. Weather, IMAP mails, pulse, facebook etc are set to pull in couple hrs instead hourly. The battery life cannot be worse than my 2-yr old HD2.
Hey guys. Have you considered bump charging. HTC advised the idea for the HTC desire battery and it in most cases doubles the battery.
Sorry I can't be more specific bit I'm on my phone. I have found the relevant link. Read the 1st post. I'm gonna do it when I get in from my gig.

Bump charging kills the battery in long run.
If you have to do it to a brand new handset it can't be good news.

I'd suggest uninstalling battery monitor. I had installed it on my g2x and immediately saw my battery percentage drajning more quickly. Probably because its always running in the background.
The best tip I can give for better battery life is to minimize what you allow to run in the background. Get rid of any task killers, set Facebook/Twitter/Email/etc to sync less frequently, turn off wifi if you're not using it so its not scanning for networks, and so on.
Also install juice defender from the Market. Its free. It has greatly increased my battery life.

I installed the Plus version because it allows wifi control. I just use the default settings except I change so it doesn't disable wifi. I do that because I use wifi calling at home so I dont want Juice Defender turning off my wifi. I always turn it off manually when I leave the house anyway.

Battery drain from "dialer"

I'm experiencing serious battery drain on my ROM'd phone. When I go into Spare Parts under the "network" pulldown menu, the object using the most amount of data is "Dialer." This doesn't make any sense since I've only made about 15 minutes of phone calls all day. My hypothesis is that the dialer is pinging the network all day, draining the battery. Why is it doing this and how do I fix the issue?

The data in Spare Parts is accurate. I can say with great certainty that the Dialer showing up as the number one user of the network is indicative of a problem.

If you click on dialer in spare parts it gives you more details. What do you have under "packages sharing this UID"? Perhaps that will give a clue.
For reference, I have seven shared UIDs (on Humble 1.42) and not experiencing this problem. 2.5MB used in 12 hours with numerous calls.
I also noticed an app named "0" using some data. Anyone know what that is? If I click on it I get a force close of "settings".

I'm also seeing dialer as having the most network usage. However, I'm running stock deodexed ee4 with the latest pb&j kernel.

I just looked at my friend's Charge, which is completely stock and loaded up Spare Parts. His phone has Dialer as the #1 user of network, but after 10 hours off the charger (but only 30 minutes of 'display on' time), he still had about 45% of his battery left.
His dialer said that he had used 28 MB of data.
My conclusion is that if his stock phone is using as much data as my ROM'd phone under "Dialer," then the battery drain issue must have more to do with the amount of time my screen is on rather than with the "dialer" being the #1 network consumer.
I assume that "dialer" consumes a ton of data for everyone. Maybe some people could report how many MB their phone has used along with the amount of time their phone has been unplugged. This will give us an idea if there is an error or not.
I also have 7 UIDs sharing, but have the problem on Eclipse ROM. My guess is it's normal for dialer to use this data.
So then, this begs the question "what is 'dialer'" and why is it consuming data? By the way, it consumes data even if mobile networks are off (it just does so at a slower rate).
I froze 'Phone' and use RocketDial as my primary dialer now and I've still got the same problem, guess it's just how the phone apps work.

Charge vs. Thunderbolt

Don't know if anyone's interested, but here I go:
Bought a Thunderbolt back in April and have had it replaced 7 or 8 times for various reasons. Each replacement, I've also had intermittent issues sending email from my POP3 account.
I demanded a Rezound, but they only gave me a Charge. Here's the comparison:
Speed: Charge wins EASILY. I expect at least 20 on the charge and hope for at least 10 on the Thunderbolt.
Weight: Charge is MUCH lighter. I like that.
Display: Charge wins easily. AMOLED is fantastic.
Screen: Charge. I love the way the screen feels. Much smoother than the Thunderbolt at times.
EVERYTHING ELSE: Thunderbolt. It's "quicker" overall, more responsive, GPS locks in within seconds (Charge took about 5 minutes), phone pad is more user-friendly and didn't require as much reaching from the thumbs, Thunderbolt NEVER freezes (Charge did), no longer randomly reboots (Charge did), camera sends portrait pics right-side-up (Charge doesn't), and I'm sure I'm forgetting something.
I should point out that because of its positives, I really wanted the Charge to work for me. It was a VERY hot chick. But it was not a wise choice. So for functionality, I'm sticking with the Thunderbolt. Just gonna deal with it not sending mail intermittently.

Just put Tweakstock on with the V6 Supercharger and Voodoo Screen Tuning. You won't go back to the TB and its ****ty battery life. Plus, with Imnuts' new PBJ kernel we can finally overclock and undervolt for maximum performance and battery life. Loving this phone again :]

Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
Rooting is the only way to go for the best possible experience.
I had a Thunderbolt, Revolution, and Charge so I have experienced all of them and will have to give it to the Charge as the best overall.
Thunderbolt was the only Android phone I had fail on me after 3 months of use. It also is considered a dud, with countless complaints from reboots, to radio issues, and so on.
It has a worse GPU/processor
Hardware buttons are TERRIBLE. They are mushy and flush, which doesn't sound like a big deal, but to me it's very annoying every time I use the phone
No hot-swappable SIM/SD
Less battery capacity 1400 vs 1600 and also by far the worst battery life of the three.
Hardware keys>capacitive keys
Thunderbolt does feel better in hand and I like the design.. I also am envious at the development/ROMs the Thunderbolt has, such as MIUI...
the only thing I'm jealous of the Thunderbolt for is the notification LED... I like everything else on the Charge (except the damn data drop which still happens occasionally for me ), and am content with the amount of dev work we have though admittedly little

Yes, if you root and download "FasterFix" your GPS will be much better. Although, it doesn't work for some people so you might need to edit a file in your /system. Either way your GPS will be much better. Rooting is insanely easy, you plug your phone into the computer, run a program, reboot, install a file and bam, you're rooted. Just check out some of the guides in Development. Also, don't feel chicken to root, we have the files needed to completely fix a bricked phone(unless you happen to brick it while messing with Voodoo Lagfix, which with our current ROM/kernel choices is almost impossible, and even then it can be fixed 99% of the time).

Install Imnuts' new PBJ kernel(its posted on Rootz) in CWM, then install Voltage Control and mess with your voltages/CPU clocks to your hearts content, although I warn you, never go over 1.4GHz or you run the risk of frying your CPU since anything over 1.4 heavily overvolts which is a very big no-no.
That's helpful...thanks for the advice. I've never rooted before, but that's quelled some of my concerns. I should mention that I'm getting some INSANE download speeds here in Kansas City...usually north of 23 and up to 49. It's great. I'm having issues with losing data connectivity (altogether) which requires a reboot. Other than that, I think my phone is getting used to me and adjusting accordingly.

You should try toggling airplane mode when data drops.

Yeah, I've tried that, too. Sometimes it works but usually it doesn't.

I lose 3G data for days and I am on my 3rd phone. The last replacement lasted 2 hours before the data dropped for 10 hours.
It's weird, I think some Charges have data issues possibly due to quality control the either the 3G or 4G basebands or both, whereas other Charges don't have issues.
I can personally attest to having a reliable charge, although I rarely go to a 4G area.
I live in a solid 4G area but still the data droppage on mine is horrendous, problem is that its not reproducible in store because of their signal boosters so no go on a replacement (I don't like dealing with the reps on the phone either, most don't know what they're doing and I don't wanna call 50 times just to get a good one lol)
I'm saving up for a Nexus or I might wait for the next HTC superphone, either way I like my Charge a lot but the data issue on mine is a deal breaker otherwise I'd stick with it till my upgrade

Unfortunately I heard that it's not just a Charge issue, but a Samsung issue. Just from reading online articles it seems that the Nexus has the same issue. At lease it did with 4.0.2. I dunno about 4.0.3.
It is a Sammy issue. A lot of people came from the fascinate to the charge for just that issue.
We had 2 fascinates in the house bought at the same time. Mine dropped once in awhile the other was solid. I got the charge as a replacement and it has been very solid. My wife has a stratosphere and she loses data once in awhile but a quick airplane toggle restores it. It is a weird issue and must be in quality control, though the fascinates issue was resolved with a software patch eventually

Boxer and battery life....

Does anyone use the walkie-talkie app voxer? I am seeing it killing my battery on 2.3.4 android. I read thy fixed the app so it doesn't drain battery but on my Evo and wife's shift, I see it show up in the battery monitor with high usage. Any comments would be appreciated.
thanks ...

Well some of us don't know many reasonable woman, you would think or hope it would be as easy as just using another app, unfortunately it's not always easy to talk some woman into doing things, even something as simple as installing an extra app to talk to you, no the guy has to just live with the fact the stupid app she uses to talk to everyone for some reason hates specific phones and uses 10% battery per hour even when it is supposed to be idle/sleep.
