Is there a way to turn off 4g, and use the slower but less battery taxing 2g network?
TIA
There is an option for that in CM7 but I have not seen it in the Sense roms.
try the juicedefender app, it has options that limit the radio
Dumb question on my part but isnt that what the GSM\CDMA Option in wireless network/mobile network for and essentially do?

yes there is, you can choose between gsm/wcdma dual mode and gsm or wcdma only

is there any way that you can disable 3g mobile data while keeping on the 4g data(like you can with the evo 4g)?
the reason i ask is this... i use my phone to tether to the computer in my room, and it seems that i get a weak 4g signal there, so its constantly going back and forth between 4g and 3g. I'd prefer to keep the phone only on a 4g signal, even if weaker. is there a way to do this ?
Try the app lte onoff from the market. I believe there's an option for lte only.
Which selection would it be? thanks in advance

I need this too.
On the thunderbolt if you used one of those phone info apps you had the options for CDMA only, CDMA/LTE auto and LTE only.
I have to use LTE only when I want to tether in my office because if I leave it on auto my phone will constantly switch between 4 and 3g and it rapes my battery.
If you use those same apps on the charge they show a bunch of gsm options and wcdma and such. Far as I can tell none of them do anything either. The built in options on the phone allow you to use CDMA only or CDMA/LTE auto but not LTE only. Definitely hope someone can work up a fix soon as it's a key issue for me (I own two tablets that I like to tether).
Under Settings/Wireless and Network/Mobile Networks/Network Mode there are the following options... GSM/WCDMA (Auto Mode), GSM Only, WCDMA Only. Ive seen posts about othere phones getting there battery drained from Auto Toggling. Using GSM only takes away 4G and gives you the E icon, which if you usually have good 4G I would assume you wouldnt need, as I have never seen an E on my screen until now. Using WCDMA only leaves us with 4G but what negative effect does cutting out the EDGE network have if any, and could choosing WCDMA only save us battery? Just thought I would put this out there so someone knowlegable about this could elaborate on. Thanks.
With the tweaks team avid had done, battery calibration, and the under volting, wouldn't the effects of switching this be negligible?

It is completely negligible. I'm running on 3G/4G (WCDMA only) all the time, because I don't like waiting for my connection to switch over from Edge and use 4G. I can last over a day of with low usage, slightly under a day with moderate, and 18 hours of very heavy use.

What rom are you using?

Well the reason why battery consumption increases while ur device is not locked on any specific n/w type like GSM only or WCDMA only is that when u have set your device to auto mode, your device scans for better network either 2G or 3G in terms of signal or quality in both idle & connected mode. While in the phase of scanning other network the device transmits at its maximum power thus consuming more battery. Now depending upon how the network coverage is & how are InterRAT reselection / handover parameters are, your device will keep on reselecting between 2G / 3G, which requires signalling thus more battery consumption.
If you feel that 3G coverage is good enough that u wont get out of coverage or drop calls then keep it locked to WCDMA only or vice versa

I'm currently running eagles blood 2.3.5 custom rom and my data is wacky. Mostly my data will say 1x which is cdma technology, which I usually get decent speeds with. But now I get H appearing which is HSPA. Is there anyway to keep just the hspa. Apps like Netflix don't work on CDMA and its very annoying. So what's the deal? Is my data wacky or do I need to change my preferred network? It's currently set to WCDMA preferred.

I think you mean GSM, not CDMA.
Go to your Settings, Wireless Networks, Mobile Networks, Network Mode, and change it from GSM/WCDMA to WCDMA only. Now if you are anywhere where there is a 3G/4G signal, you will get it instead of the phone switching to a higher 2G signal automatically. However if you are in a 2G area, you will need to switch back to GSM/WCDMA.
no hes right its cdma technology, i think it might be simple, if u go into ur access point simple is probably checked off u need it to be tmobile and hit search networks even if it says error keep doing it until u get the option to choose tmobile , same thing was happening to me on fauxs rom lol i think verizon uses that too it looks like this rite....1X
Iwent into the access point settings and its checked off with T-Mobile. No dice, still switching back and forth. I also live in an aera that has hspa+. Its weird because on my old mytouch slide it was able to just use the hspa network no problem. With this switching its severely draining my battery. People said they can get 24hrs with there phone on this rom, I got 6 today. Thanks for the replies guys, I really appreciate it.
UPDATE: Wi-fi calling works fine which is confusing that I'm still getting 1x when my network settings are all set to t-mobile

So i downloaded Elixir and heres the deal:
Eaglesblood:
1X uses CDMA
E uses GSM
H uses HSPA
Stock:
2g uses GSM
4g uses HSDPA
is there anyway to fix the eaglesblood rom so it uses just the 2 like stock does?
Hello All,
I'm on the WIND mobile network and I'm trying to prevent my MyTouch 4G Slide from roaming on Rogers. I'm running pyr-o-ice 1.12 desensed, and I can't figure out how to get the WCDMA only mode to stick.
I only recall one ROM (don't recall which one) being able to set WCDMA only as persistent, and this one doesn't seem able to. I've read that there is an app available on the market, but I'm wondering if there's any way to do this straight through Android. *#*#4636#*#* menu settings are NOT persistent. Even without rebooting, the phone will switch to WCDMA preferred even after I have set WCDMA only mode.
Does anyone have a persistent solution on ROM-agnostic Android? I don't mind editing files through adb. Thanks!
It may be a glitch in the ROM. I have the stock Rom and run WCDMA Only mode all the time. T-Mobile's 2G at my work is terrible so I just use WiFi or WCDMA.

I have full bars on both 2G and 4G, but the 4G is slooooooow... Anyone know why? Sometimes 2G is faster... The phone on 4G just seems to keep downloading "something" but doesnt show much... And takes forever to load. So i have to use wifi but when i am out id like to use 4G... Thanks

4g in your area can just be borked....
Have you tried Toggle2G? (You need to flash the ...update.zip)

I am using a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket on the Dirty Unicorn rom and I was wondering how I can force my network to 3G. I have Straight Talk on AT&T and a very good LTE 4G signal but it drains my battery very quickly and I don't really need the speed of LTE and the speed of 3G works fine for the things I do.
I've tried in the Mobile Network settings to switch it to GSM/WCDMA preferred but it always immediately switches back to LTE/GSM/WCDMA mode and connects to LTE. The use only 2G networks option does not work either as it immediately gets turned back off as soon as you turn it on.
Using *#*#4636*#*# to switch the mode to WCDMA preferred or GSM preferred does not work either as it also switches back to LTE immediately after.
Is it possible to force the phone to 3G networks? On my old captivate samsung phone on a 4.2 JB rom, it was doable and it worked on 3G fine (even being a 4G enabled phone).
Here is what I've found works on AT&T but it might not work for you.
Go to mobile network settings and then Network Operators. In the Network Operators screen scan for networks. If two different networks appear select the one on the bottom. Then the 2G only button and other settings will work and stick until you reboot your phone. I have to change this every time I reboot. I hope this helps.

Yes. That worked. Now I just need to figure out how to turn off the hspa so it just uses a 3G connection on WCDMA instead of hspa or hspa+

I have been using this technique every time I reboot. Anyone know how to make this permanent?
Or perhaps automate it using tasker?
