[Q] How can I use the stock Camera.apk on Cyanogenmod 7.1 - HTC Inspire 4G

I did all the steps below. An it didn't work. Any ideas?
1. Uninstall / delete all the traces of the previous version of the application
2. Put the apk and the odex file in /system/app folder, change the permission to rw-r-r
3. Reboot into recovery mode and wipe dalvik cache
4. Reboot

Simple answer is you can't. The HTC camera required drivers CM roms don't use. No HTC apps will work on a Cm based rom

You took the words right out of my mouth

Thanks for the answer. The only thing that I dont like about the cm7 camera.apk is that i cant focus by touching the screen, and with the htc camera.apk I can. is there any other camera app that I can use to do that?

You can try vignette from the market but to be honest the sense camera has been the best over all I have found. Even when I was on a cm based rom trying other 3rd party camera apps I always found myself missing hlthe sense camera

The new stable cm7 build actually does have that feature now. You have to turn it on in settings and you only tap once, not twice. Tapping twice zooms. I have used it myself so I know its there.

AOSP apks?

Hey everyone. I have decided to get rid of some HTC apks and replace them with AOSP apks. (Music, Dialer, Browser, etc.) I am not 100% sure on which ones I will be replacing, but can someone provide a download for AOSP apks? That would be awesome because I know I can download a few ROMs here and then take out the AOSP apks, but my internet is REALLY slow, so that would take forever. Also, feel free to let me know on which ones I should take out and why. I would really like a second opinion on what all can be replaced and if replacing any would help. Let me know! Thanks to the one who uploads the apks!

Definitely replace HTC mms. AOSP mms is so much faster, especially if you're using the AOSP keyboard. The email gives you a combined inbox, which is kind of nice - but attachments might not download properly. Music is nice and fast, but you don't get the lockscreen controls. Contacts/dialer is kinda personal preference. Browser always shows the taskbar and addressbar, unlike the HTC browser; it also seems a bit faster from startup. However, doubletap zoom might not work. Oh, the AOSP browser wont work without the com.cyanogenmod.android.jar and com.cyanogenmod.android.xml files (those are found in roms, so you might be out of luck with the browser...)
these apks are from Darch's roms.
What's needed to get AOSP contacts.apk to work with my awesome DCv2.06 setup? I imagine some framework is not in place - something deep like that?
Attempted to install (thought it would fail or at least not work if it did install) and it said 'Not Installed' and an OK button.

You have to push it in to system/app ... installing from a file explorer should only work for the email apk.

stuckinstupid...PLEASE change your name (Because you're stuckonsmart!), because you just got me the dialer I've always wanted! I didn't think to pull it from anyone, and further more, I didn't think to push it. I kept installing it.
thanks for the AOSP dialer i been looking for it for awhile now thanks
now im trying to decide on which MMS app i want to use i like the AOSP one better than the HTC one but it won't let you send V-cards(contact card) via MMS.

Mms --> push/replace mms.apk in system/app
contacts--> push/without replacing anything...you have to keep the HTC dialer alongside the AOSP dialer
music--> push and delete HTCmusc.apk in system/app
email--> push/without replacing anything OR simply install with file browser...you can have both HTC mail and AOSP mail at the same time

For the browser, remove the existing browser.apk, replace it with the AOSP browser.apk, THEN you must place these files in the corresponding paths in your rom:

Lol. Was just about to say I just pushed Contacts.apk to my phone (running Fresh 2.0d) and it works perfectly .
EDIT** Only thing I have found not working with Contacts.apk from AOSP is how they are listed. If you go into contacts, you can see them listed correctly (alphabetically) but the displayed alphabet is technically incorrect (if that makes any sense). For example, the names are in the correct order, but the "A" is listed under "W" even though it is up top as it should be.

Just added it. Use the Contacts.apk that someone attached above and you have to push it to your phone as a /system/app through ADB. Nothing to it. Works great, no modification needed.
Most importantly it allows you to select which groups from your contacts in google that you want to sync. An option that broke or was removed in all 2.1 based roms out right now.

Thanks for posting this.
I'm still having some trouble getting Contacts.apk on my Hero. I'm running DC 2.072.
I'm able to successfully push the Contacts.apk from this thread with the command adb push Contacts.apk /sytem/app while in recovery mode. When I rebooted, though, I couldn't find it on the phone. There's no "Contacts" app, and the only "Phone" app is the HTC one.
Any suggestions?? I have also previously tried installing the APK by copying it to the SD card and then using an app installer, but the install would either fail, or I would get an FC when launching the phone app.

[Hack] Unlblocking Market Apps (Market 2.3.6)

WARNING: It appears that doing the following changes will mean you can not use the online version of the market to push apps to your phone!
The following hack DOES NOT unlock paid apps.
The following instructions are for phones which apps don't show up in the market due to.
1) No flash or auto-focus on camera
2) Apps are protected and do not show up on unrecognized phones
3) Screen size is too small (mostly for QVGA users)
(If your missing apps due to country restrictions use market enabler)
Thanks go to Atl4ntis for the patched Vending.apk
This has been tested for android 2.2.1 and 2.3.4 on IDEOS U1850. It should work for any phone I believe, however I don't have anything else to test this on.
WARNING: I am not responsible if anything happens to your phone. Whilst the procedure should be safe, always do a backup before editing system files.
You will need a file explorer with root access, these instructions assume you are using root explorer (this could also be done through ADB)
Dowload the Market fix files.zip and extract vending.apk and android.hardware.camera.flash-autofocus.xml onto your sd-card
1. Go to manage applications, all tab.
2. Go to market, clear cache, data and force stop
3. Go to Google Services framework, clear data and force stop
4. Copy vending.apk over file in \system\app\ (make sure you mount r/w if it's not letting you copy)
5. Longpress vending.apk and change permissions to be rw-r--r-- (read + write for owner, just read for group and user)
6. Copy android.hardware.camera.flash-autofocus.xml to \System\etc\permissions\ (you don't need to copy this if it already exists in that folder)
7. If copied change permissions to be rw-r--r-- (read + write for owner, just read for group and user)
8. Edit the following build.prop lines to be the following (Some of these lines may already be correct)
Froyo:
ro.build.id=FRG83
ro.build.fingerprint=google/passion/passion/mahimahi:2.2.1/FRG83/60505:user/release-keys
ro.build.description=passion-user 2.2.1 FRG83 60505 release-keys
Gingerbread:
ro.build.id=GRJ22
ro.build.display.id=GRJ22
ro.product.name=soju
ro.product.device=crespo
ro.build.description=soju-user 2.3.4 GRJ22 121341 release-keys
ro.build.fingerprint=google/soju/crespo:2.3.4/GRJ22/121341:user/release-keys
(if you edit the build.prop on the pc then copy it back over, please don't forget to fix permissions to be rw-r--r--)
9. Reboot phone, and give it a bit of extra time to startup before opening the market.
10. Open market, agree to TOS.
11. Go to manage applications, all tab.
12. Go to market, clear cache and force stop (DO NOT CLEAR DATA)
13. Go to Google Services framework, clear data and force stop
14. Open market, and you should get an error. (This is good)
15. Restart phone again.
And tad-ah, you should be able to access pretty much anything.
Please let me know if this works or doesn't work for you, what phone you are using, what ROM and what app you can't access (if that's the problem).
Works perfectly on my chinese Flytouch 3 tab! A lot of apps were not in the market... But now, they are
Thanks! (I will test it with my HTC Wildfire tomorrow!)

Thank you!

Is your build of CM7 using gingerbread 2.3.4? Also are you using the gingerbread build.prop edits, not the froyo ones?
EDIT: to people rebooting twice you shouldn't have to. Make sure after rebooting on step 15 wait a good couple mins once at your home screen before trying the market.
Though if all you have to do is reboot it again to make it work. Who really cares .

You can also go to applications and look at the market icon. If it's greyed out, you have to wait a little longer, when it's loaded you're good to go.
At least for me that worked.

[ROM][Cyanogenmod 7.2RC0] with hardware accelerated browser

What I loved at HTC Sense was that webkit was hardware accelerated. On cm gerrit there was a patch (not merged) which enables hardware accelerated webkit on desire hd. So i compiled Cyanogenmod with this patch by myself.
I've forgot to set debug.sf.hw=1 in build.prop before signing:
after installing this rom please make the following steps:
Download ES File Explorer from the Android Market
Go to settings and scroll down and enable Root-Explorer and mount / and / system with write permission (don't know exactly how this option is called in english versions of ES File Explorer)
then go out of settings and touch the star in the left upper edge and select phone
open folder system and then open the file build.prop ES edit note
and then write at end in a new line "debug.sf.hw=1" (without the quotes) and the menu and safe
then reboot twice

Isn't it set to 1 by default in any Gingerbread ROM, even if it isn't mentioned in build.prop? I thought you can only "change" it by manually setting it to 0.

Does this include all patches up today plus this weblit patch? Or is the last official nightly plus this patch?
Thank you, especially for the fast download. Took less than 10sec to get it down .
Something is wrong with this rom. It flashes and boots up just fine, but once I unlock my screen and hit the app drawer button the whole phone locks up. Any chance you can post a flashable zip of this patch instead of a whole rom?

Camera is part of the Gallery apk. If you don't have a camera icon in your app drawer, try reflashing ROM and Gapps. If still not there, you might have to wipe and reflash (hopefully you wiped between CM9 and CM10).

are u sure this rom even has a camera app ??

I'm not sure how you managed that twice. When you say you wiped did you do a factory reset also through recovery? Factory reset wipe cache then wipe the dalvik cache then install the ROM. As fas as I know all cm10 builds for our device have a camera. Also if your taking pictures with a camera from the market what do you view them in since you don't have a gallery either?

This is not a ROM problem. You need to do a full wipe between ROMs, not just cache.

Sorry dude, we're all tapped out. Pretty sure you're the only one experiencing this, so you're going to have to find a solution on your own. In the meantime, try some Market camera apps...many are better than stock anyways. You can also find the MIUI app in the themes section which is pretty good.

It says can't connect to camera and I just get to close the APP.
I tried rebooting the tablet - it didn't help. Also tried clearing the cache for the APP and it didn't make a difference.
Running SlimKat rom 4.4.4.
Can someone shed some light for me on how to fix this issue?

Sometimes (this worked on a different ROM for the 7 inch version, but its worth trying) installing Google camera to system/app and removing stick camera works (always nandroid backup first so if something goes wrong you dont have to reflash.)
Sent from my SGH-T989
EDIT: also, did you clean flash or dirty flash SlimKat?

Clean flash Kitkat, can't recall if the camera worked or not when I first flashed it but I'm pretty sure it did. So it just randomly stopped.
Where does one obtain Google Camera? Right in the playstore?
And can I just uninstall the stock Camera app using the Dev tools of the rom?

Yes, google camera is in the play store. It actually probably does not need to be installed as a system app. Idk what tools are in SlimKat ATM but I've always just gone into es file explorer as root or used root explorer, mounted / and /system as R/W and deleted the camera apk from /system/app. Then just wipe cache and Dalvik in recovery and reboot. This may or may not fix the problem, but it worked for me. Again, make a backup first.

How do you install something as a system app?

Don't install it with package installer. If you installed it from the Play Store, cut the apk from /data/app and move it to /system/app and change the permissions to the same as the other apps in folder. Google camera shouldn't matter though.

google camera is not compatible with our tabs....even if you do get it installed its pretty useless IMO. Grab your ROM zip and go into it and find your camera.apk. unzip it to your sd card and then go back in and long press it and reinstall it. It may (did for me) work that way. If not try another (different) ROM. Grab zip file go in and find the camera apk under apps, unzip and then reinstall. NOTE: for me, I had to go into Titanium and completely remove the camera app that i had and then do the above procedure. I trial and errored it and it worked for me. Finally
Edit: and yes, please nandroid backup b4 trying anything

@Android-Andi posted in another tab2 thread that flashing next kernel (and vendor blobs) will fix the problem.
