Which ROM/Kernel - Verizon Droid Charge

Im new to the whole android scene. I am loving my phone more and more since I've been off the stock Froyo charge rom and onto the plain bloated EP3HA ROM. But I want something more. Something faster. Maybe more control and better battery life. Ive been reading about all the ROM's available right now and I'm interested in them. But I'm not sure which to choose. I dont know if I should do the kernel update and all that. Any advice from you guys would be much appreciated!

ok well you've got Humble, Gummy Charged, and Infinity for roms but Gummy is still using the slightly older EP1W gingerbread build... I've ran all three and all are fast and stable, though for what you want I'd say Gummy is probably your best bet as it has TSM parts for tweaks AND themes.. also the latest 3.1.0 voodoo kernel from Imoseyon at rootzwiki is fast and overclockable
i'd recommend trying all of them out for a few days (all are compatible with the 3.1.0 kernel though you'll have to flash it separately as they don't come with it) and seeing which you like and runs best for you

so you'd choose gummy over any of the roms using EP3HA?

not necessarily, just Gummy has themes in addition to the tweaks and TSM parts of the other roms so it has more options
edit: derp there are also some themes now for Humble and Infinity EP3H so that kind of negates what I said lol.. its like I said you gotta try them all and find the one you like

its easy, it downloads as a .zip and you flash it in CWM just like you would a rom

The only ROM's I've done, I've flashed through ODIN.

Also. I hate to be a bother. But do you have a link to the kernel? I've found the gummy rom at http://rootzwiki.com/topic/5643-romep1wcwmgummycharged-gbe-21-10242011/

I pm'd you the link to the kernel... As for flashing the rom it's not too hard, and you're gonna want to make backups of whatever you need as these steps will completely wipe your phone and install a new rom. You will need to place all .zip packages of whatever rom/kernels you want on the root of the sd card (not in a folder), and don't rename or unzip them as that will make them not work properly. Also once you're in CWM the touchscreen won't work, you'll need to use the volume buttons to scroll up and down and the power button to make selections.
You'll need this CWM file: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112804 and you will flash it in odin like a rom. Once you flash it in Odin don't immediately turn the phone on (or you'll have to Odin it again, only a custom kernel can make CWM 'stick' in the system), hold volume up and the home button and power at the same time until 'Samsung' comes up on the screen then let go of the power button while still holding the other two until CWM comes up. It should be orange version 4.0.1.4 with the banana (lol you'll see), from there you're gonna want to do three wipes. First select and go through with the 'wipe data/factory reset' option then the 'wipe cache partition' option, and lastly under the 'advanced' section wipe the 'dalvik cache'. You'll want to do this every time you flash a new rom in CWM (kernels and mods are usually ok to flash without it or you can be safe and just wipe the cache and dalvik partitions). After that go to 'install zip from sd card', select the first option to 'choose zip from sdcard' then find the rom (no kernel yet) you wanna install and flash it (Gummy 2.0 first in your case). It'll take you back to the main CWM menu when you're done, choose to reboot the phone. Now it'll reboot the phone and convert your system partitions to ext4 and activate voodoo lagfix. It will most likely hang at the 'Samsung' screen for a while and you'll hear a robot lady saying she's doing stuff. Let it do what its doing, it may take some time, then when its done it'll power on and you've got your rooted custom rom running. Now the Gummy rom already comes with a voodoo kernel (which is why it converted on boot) but you will want to update it to the 3.1.0 kernel so hold power button down until a menu appears and select the recovery option to boot you straight into CWM without having to do anything special. Then proceed to flash the kernel the same way you did the rom except you don't have to wipe anything just install and reboot. Then you're done and ready to go unless you wanna update the modem/radios which are easy, just install with Odin.
sorry its so long but hopefully it helps anyone trying to root and rom their phone

Voodoo Lagfix/GummyCharge combo?

I want to root/ROM gummycharge/voodoo lagfix with odin. I have been reading but I am still unsure how to do both. Is there a link that explains how to do both either at the same time or one after another. Should I do the ROM first or the Voodoo. I am still somewhat unsure of the 3rd Step in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122657. Does this mean that I should download http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131710 even though I dont see a download. Will that link have the voodoo/up to date gummy?
I know I got more research to do but you were all noobs at once to
EDIT:whats the difference between gummycharge and a cwm.
And why in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1107797 does it have a place to download ROMS and Kernals as separate. Is the kernals just the combo?
Thanks and sorry for these basic probably dumb questions but this thing was expensive
GummyCharged is a ROM. it is basically the system files for your phone that have been tweaked to the rom makers liking and repackaged for us to use.
Clockworkmod is an alternate recovery, that allows you to manage those system files, along with your data partition and cache. it allows you to install those unsigned packages containing custom system and boot partitions over your existing stock ones. your phones stock recovery wont install anything but a signed package (official from manufacturer) called update.zip.
a kernel can be installed over a rom, giving you features like changing the filesystem to ext4 from rfs (the latter being samsungs favorite for some ungodly reason) it can change voltage settings on the cpu, tweak video, give you root access, and numerous other things. the only limit is a touchwiz based (samsung) kernel cant be used on an aosp (pure google) rom, and vice versa... and they also cant be used across different software versions. (no froyo kernel on gingerbread roms)
to summarize, you can have CWM installed with GummyCharged, and run a voodoo kernel all at once. its actually a very potent package, as i am running GC 1.8.5, the latest CWM, and using the PBJ OC kernel with voodoo lagfix. my phone is incredible. running at 1.3ghz and not a single hiccup.
my understanding of the concept, YMMV, and devs feel free to correct or elaborate.
Gummy charged is a Rom(operating system for your phone) and CWM recovery replaces your stock recovery system. The charge is the first Samsung android phone that I've had and the rooting process is a lot simpler that other phones, I'll explain what I mean and this should answer your question about what step to do first.
With odin you can flash a full Rom to replace your stock operating system. You could do it in all the different steps that you have links to (which won't hurt later on to understand all the different steps), but you can also flash a Rom that is already rooted, includes a custom kernel with voodoo lagfix, and CWM recovery.
So pretty much all you need to do is dowload the odin software and flash a .tar file and you will have a rooted phone with CMR.
This post is the one I followed to learn odin and unzipping a tar file
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1096657
Once you download odin this is the Rom I'm currently running and It has awesome battery life and fast.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146103
That Rom will boot you into the CWM recovery menu on the first reboot. Follow the instructions in the OP and you'll be good. Good luck and let me know how it goes and if you need any help.
Thanks guys, I ended up doing CWM recovery with odin, then did pbj oc and gummycharge 1.8.5 rom. Now my question is, is voodoo lagfix on in my phone, I see a folder for it but I dont know how to do it. Another question I have is are you able to change roms easily? Do i just DL it and put it on the SD card like the rom and go into recovery and do the same installation or do i gotta wipe this rom?
Go into the voodoo folder, select enable lagfix and system lagfix on.
Reboot and you should hear a voice enabling it. Once she finishes and reboots, youre good to go.
If the Roms are in the zip format you can just download them to your sd card and flash thru recovery. Unless its an update to the current rom you are in, you have to wipe data ,cache and dalvik cache. If you don't there will be stuff from the previous rom that will not play nice.
Titanium backup is a good way to backup your apps to restore them after you flash.
Just a note of warning for some reason the backup and restore function of recovery doesn't work on the Charge. Don't use it in Rom manager if you use that app.
Quick boot is a good app to boot into recovery.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA Premium App
I am going into file manager > Voodoo> then I dont know, i dont see anything that says enable.
Also wondering if I can download a theme to it because I am not a huge fan of the gummycharge green Thanks
EDIT: this is what I put on hoping its voodoo lagfix http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126136. Not even sure if i have it but it does say voodoo lagfix enabled. How do u know if its enabled. THanks
Not file manager. You need to boot into recovery. Then look for voodoo and choose enable lagfix and system lagfix.
If you have gummy charged you should be able to hold down the power button, then choose recovery.
You will then see the recovery menu select voodoo (navigate with the volume rockers and make selection with the power button)
Inside the voodoo menu choose enable lagfix and system lagfix on, then choose "go back" until you see the reboot system option. Select this and then you should hear a female voice telling you whats going on. Be patient it takes a little while.
awsome, thanks man
Hi, I followed the directions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14692818#post14692818 to flash my phone with Odin using the PBJ Kernal (with lagfix) and the Gummycharged 1.8.5 rom. Everything worked fine and I heard the woman's voice speaking the progress. I was not sure if the lagfix took, and eventually found this post on how to check it. I saw in CWM it says that it is not enabled and whenever I choose the option to enable or turn it on, nothing happens and CWM continues to say it is disabled. Just need to know how to proceed and if I am missing anything. I came over from stock.
Also while I am at it, I am getting a lot of errors about the android core (*.*.acore) having to close and similar errors with skype. Any insight into this? My programs showed back up (I guess cause they were on the sdcard) but I don't remember using any backup functions in the phone besides Google's built in for each account. Any insight would be appreciated!
Update: I just ran a Quadrant and got a score of 1507. Seems like a score you would get if lagfix is enabled. But everything else is still the same.

[Q] What to install ?

Hi,
Im pretty new to Droid phones and I have had my Droid Charge for a couple of months now. Its pretty much untouched and factory stock verison. I been reading alot of the post and some it can be confusing. My question is coming from stock verison what would be the ideal and easiest upgrade?
I see alot of news on Honeycomb,Gummycharge etc.. what would be my best bet and what are the advantages chosen one over the other thanks in advance

Not at first because it's going to be released a CWM recovery flashable zip. If you go to the Charge developer forum and Odin over the latest CWM recovery by Imnuts, you will be able to install it easily when it is released.

Close. You don't need to install the previous version (1.9.1) but you can if you want to. You just have to Odin over the latest CWM recovery (this will root your phone). When the 2.0 zip is released then you just place it on your SD card, enter recovery by holding volume up + home + power until the SAMSUNG logo flashes twice and then choose to install zip from SD card. Make sure to do a factory reset, and wipe the cache partition and dalvik cache (under advanced) before flashing the zip in recovery. You may not understand all of that now, but when you're in recovery mode it will make sense.

You don't need to touch Altered Beast unless you want it. I'm fairly certain that using Odin to flash CWM will provide root (I haven't done it in a long while). If it does not, after flashing CWM, just install this zip from your SD card in recovery and that will provide root.

No problem chief. Feel free to post back with any question.
If you are on the stock kernel you will need to boot directly to recovery and flash the SU .zip after odin CMW, or else the recovery will be overwritten by the stock kernel.
Your best bet is to wait till GC FE 2.0 is released, then odin CWM, and boot direct to recovery and flash the 2.0 .zip. then you are done in a couple steps.
That'll work too.
so now the waiting game begins lol

How can I get the LG froyo camera back?

Is it possible to take a certain app or program from a certain rom and like pull it from the rom and install it on a rooted phone? I just rooted my g2x and I want the old LG froyo camera back. Can it get pulled from another rom and installed on my phone without my flashing a new rom?[
Rooted but on gingerbread? Head on over to the development section and check out flak0's mod... Just download it and flash away... Wait! You have clockwork recovery right?

To answer your question
generally: yes. However, the LG camera is a special case and a lot of work has gone into making it work on gingerbread. It is possible but you'll need a specific mod over in the Development board.
Sent from my Nexus Prime using XDA Ultimate App
Yes on gingerbread and yes I have the clockwork recovery mod. I'm familiar with this stuff but not an expert, so sorry if these are noob questions but I checked out the thread and there is a bunch of links for the camera. Which one do I download? Im guessing the 3.0 one but Im not sure. And thats the actual cam that I am going to flash on my phone right? Not a new mod? and do I flash it on my phone just like the clockwork mod? I mean the same exact process? Or is this just like an .apk that I install? Can you please help me through the process of getting it on my phone?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1166531
Yeah the 3.0 is the one you want.
Just flash it in Clockwork the way you would flash any rom or kernel.
Before you flash though make sure to wipe cache and dalvik, and just to be safe fix permissions afterwards.
Just to make sure we're on the same page... You flashed clockwork via the NVflash method, right?
and then to get into clockwork to flash other stuff such as roms and this camera, you hold volume down and power from a powered off state, correct?

Yes I am on clockwork via NVflash. I'm still a bit confused. Sorry if I wasnt clear before. See, the clockwork thing was the only and first thing I flashed. I never flashed a rom or anything. I followed the instructions to root exactly how I saw them. Obviously one step was to flash the clockwork mod. Thats how far my experience with flashing goes. So Im not exactly sure what to do to flash the cam on my phone. I put it on my sd card Im assuming right? Then I do the hold volume down and power to get to whatever that screen is called? After that do I just go to "install zip from sdcard" and look for it? Thats what I assumed but I have no idea why I have to wipe cache or what dalvik is? and why/how do I fix permissions after?
Ok good ur on the right track having CWM installed via NVflash.
Two questions:
1) What version of clockwork are your running?
2) How did you achieve root if the only thing you've ever flashed is clockwork?
That will help me help you.
I think the CWM is 5.020. I got it from this link..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
then to root, all I did was download the root zip file found in this link..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214
I followed those steps.
So then you have flashed something in CWM... you flashed the root zip, no?
The same way you flashed the root zip is the same way ur gonna flash the camera, I guess since its not a rom or kernel you don't need to bother wiping catch and fixing permissions:
-Boot into CWM with vol down and power
-select install zip from sd card
-find the camera 3.0 zip on ur sd card, install
-reboot, enjoy
For future reference, when ur ready to flash a custom rom or kernel, add 3 more steps to this process:
-Boot into CWM
-wipe catch partition (in the case that your going from a 2.3.3 rom to a CM7 based rom, this step changes to "wipe data/factory reset")
-advanced, wipe dalvik catch
-install zip from sd card
-find zip and install it
-advanced, fix permissions
Thank you! Just one last quick question. Let's say I flash the cam app. Then later down the road I wanna flash a new rom. Since I gotta wipe everything I would have to flash the cam back to use it on the new rom right?
Yes. However, don't try to flash the LG cam over a CM7-based rom, as it won't work. 2.3.3 based roms are ok.
So what are my options if I don't like the Gingerbread/cm7/AOSP camera?
it sucks big time
Which ROM is the best? I am seriously thinking about flashing a new rom on my phone. I never was but I guess flashing is like a drug, do it once and you'll wanna do it more. well atleast for me lol. I'm asking this because I was looking through the rom options in the other forum and I read something about needing to flash a kernel to overclock, then I saw a CM7 kernel with an overclock preset? Confused me a little. I can flash any rom I want and overclock myself right? Will all roms have a kernel that supports overclocking?
Can you give me the best rom/kernel to flash based what I'm looking for? I would like to overclock to atleast 1.2(Whats the highest I can do without it becoming dangerous for the phone?). I want no bloatware, can a rom free up internal memory? if so, I want that, faster then stock performance and better battery life. The LG camera or atleast a cam app that is better then stock android. I also want stablity in performance. Just for a reference, I was looking at Weapon rom, seems like the best to me, but then again I am new to the whole rom game. I know its based on personal taste, but I would like a little push in the right direction so I dont have to do trial and error with roms.
Thanks in advance for all your help.

that is near the same camera, likely the same developers.

How to get recovery going?

I managed to root my bosses GS4g rooted successful with one click which was easy but no matter how much I read up on things I came up to a dead end with getting recovery. Right now if I hold volume up and down and power I get the basic factory reset or reboot options with blue text. Any suggestions? When I try to get a custom recovery going so I can flash roms it says it cant mount the sdcard? Even thought the device reads it fine when booted normally. Any suggestions?
Well if you're already rooted you can use:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_4G#Using_SGS_Kernel_Flasher
You'll need to find the froyo voodoo kernel (should be for KD1) if you're on Froyo (version 2.2.x) or you can use the bhundven's kernel for GB (version 2.3.x).
Both kernels will give you root.
Maybe I just dont get it...I rooted a G2 and Sensation no problem and flash roms like they are going out of style but the GS4g really has me stumped...Problem is I can't flash anything because there is no option to choose zip file....is it that different from an htc phone?
Once you have CWM you should be able to flash roms using the zip files just like normal. When you hold both volume buttons and power until splash screen... release power... and continue holding volume up and down it should take you to CWM. It is built directly into the kernels so if you followes all the steps correctly it will work.

What you need is to get info Recovery mode. The three button combo works on my Fascinate, but rarely on my wifes, GS4G, so I used ADB. New to the forum so I can't post links, but ADB is straight forward. and once installed you go to a bommand prompt and type:
"adb reboot becovery"
Once there you can load any Zip , I loaded and love the Valhalla ROM.

FBis251 told you to flash a kernel. jigglynuts told you that you can flash anything once you have CWM. kpedrick told you how to get into recovery.
The rest of the story is that the kernel FBis251 is telling you to flash is the custom kernel that will give you CWM (which is red) that will give you the option to install the zip. Right now you have standard recovery (which is blue) and there is no option to install from zip.
Flash the kernel.

rooting with odin?

I have a HTC Thunderbolt and im familar with rooting. Im getting a Samsung Droid Charge in a couple of weeks. I downloaded odin and the usb drivers for the phone. Do i just wipe the phone, put the phone in download mode, load any EE4 based rom and wipe after reboot? I can't find the altered beast rom because the feds jacked the megaupload servers.
thanks
If you just want root, all you need to do is flash CWM from odin, then boot right into cwm and flash the SU Binary.
You really don't want EE4. EE4 is Froyo based. ED4 is the latest release. Right now there are 3 roms based on it: Tweakstock, Infinity, and Eclipse. You are going to be way, way happier with any of them than you will be with anything EE4 based.
I am running tweak myself, but I believe if you look around you will find a rooted stock version of gb to use and yeah you just flash it in Odin and boot right into cwm

Copy the Eclipse file to your SD card first, and if you want to run a kernel (I recommend PBJ), copy it to the SD card as well. Use Odin to flash CWM (any version works, as long as it's one of the Charge Odin files). After that, pull your battery back out and put it back in, then boot directly into CWM by holding Home+VolUp+Power. If you let it boot normally, it will overwrite CWM with stock recovery. Using your volume buttons as arrow keys and your power button as select, wipe data/factory reset, then install from zip and select the rom file, and then, if you chose to flash a kernel, do the same for the kernel. Reboot and you should come up in your new rom. It will probably take a few minutes to boot the first time while it rebuilds the caches.

I can't seem to find the CWM odin package and the PBJ.zip to flash in CWM. Do you know where i can get these files?
Thanks again.
Imnuts primarily uses Rootzwiki for his releases, so it's easiest to find his stuff there.

I still recommend the old 0817 yellow CWM if people intend to nandroid backup/restore. That functionality seems to be hit or miss with the newest release.
