Hello,
We have a mobile application that runs on Windows ce 4.2 for business use. On CE 4.2 there was the ability to lock the start menu and require and admin password to access it.
This allowed us to launch our app on startup, and the user wasn't able to access anything other then our app. If then the IT department had to make changes for config they would have full access to the mobile PC by using the password.
We have now moved to a new handheld pc deivce that is running on WM 6.5. And the lock startmenu dosn't appear to be part of the system. The lock seems to lock screen access all together, not just access to the OS features.
I've done some searchs and see that the start menu can be replaced completely. But havn't seen any that have a lock feature built into them.
Is their anything in the regitry to set? Or something we could change on the fly with in our application to enable/disable access to the startmenu?

Is there a prog that can allow you to fully control your PPC through your desktop without a plugin installed in the PPC? THanx
Not too sure what you mean by "...without a plugin installed in the PPC..." but Soti's Pocket Controller Professional does the control job (http://www.soti.net/default.asp?Cmd=Products&SubCmd=PCPro) in a slick commercial app and Microsoft Remote Display does something similar for free but without the frills ( http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/3/7/5376bdb4-0aec-40df-bb5c-7a4eb4819b25/remotedsp.exe).
As far as I am aware both involve a PPC resident app being installed as well as a PC side app to be able to function. Soti has the option whether to display an icon in the sys tray or not, MRD's sys tray icon cannot be hidden). If that is what you mean by PPC plugin then neither of these apps is what you are looking for.

I meant, as in that no progs have to be installed on the PPC
Why is the distinction important to you?
The thing is, my touchscreen is no longer working, and I have a WM5 BA
Ahh,
In that case try using your Dpad as it will act as a scrolling tab (e.g. up/down on the today screen inc the sys tray, pressing it to "enter" or "select" something). You should therefore be able to install either of the above apps using that.
Once installed Soti I think is automatic (but costs) whereas MRD has to be launched manually. Either way once you have an active sync connection you could use AS's Explore option and drop say MRD into your \windows\startup directory and soft reset, it would then launch automatically (again using the dpad to initiate your activation "Connect" dialog) then the app will kick in via your PC and you're off with PC control of your PPC.
Good luck - Mallow1
How do I install it in the first place, with the WM5 installer, though?
Both apps have desktop initiated installation over Activesync. Once the PC end has done it's job, when you next connect AS, it will trigger the PPC installation. If the dialogue pops up giving you the option of where to install the app ("Device", "Main Memory", "Storage", "Ram dics", "Flash dics" etc depending upon how your system is set up) use the dpad up/down to highlight where you want it, then press the dpad to select it. Then the installation should complete and ur up and running.

There's a couple problems in doing this as I see it...
First, Changing the Soft Keys when using the WinMo interface (NOT Manila/TouchFlo) requires a registry Hack. I'm assuming that there's prolly a different registry setting somewhere to change what Manilla sets the SoftKeys to, but you'd have to find that first. Maybe someone who is more familiar with the Manilla interface and where registry/settings are, could give you that info...
Secondly, I don't believe (or at least know of) an Executable app that Locks the device. I believe the built-in "Device Lock" functionality is calling a DLL or running service/exe or something, but I don't know of an EXE in the windows directory that you can click on to lock your device. Another post I read mentioned something of a "lock.exe" file in the \Windows\ directory but I believe that was a reference to a 3rd party app since I do not have/see that file. Again someone with more knowledge - please feel free to step in and correct/inform.
in light of those two problems I would recommend using the built-in (or at least built-in on my phone - Fuze w/ WinMo) "Long Press End Key" option found in Start > Settings > System which can be set to lock the device when the "end" key is held down. This option may or may not exist on your phone... I am not sure if it's just something HTC included on mine, or what.
I hope this helps a little bit, or someone else can be of better assistance.
found it
thnaks for ur answer i found it de devicelock is hidden in windows right now i cant remember if its a.exe or what but its named devicelock.
i sold that phone to a friend and now i got an opal, its funny because i found my own q while looking for the same app
Hello. Using TP2 with WM 6.5. This situation is present in all Word releases : when it starts it scans for something until that blue bar fills up.
How can we stop that? is there any registry tweak??
Thanks
It's scanning your device for all *.doc* files AFAIK. Then it can ask you what you want to open. It shouldn't do this if you open files directly.
Also, have you tried Office 2010 Beta (available from the Marketplace).

It doing that when opening a file. When starting the app it does not.
Any ideeas?
I know this is not a mobile 7 issue but I assume Windows Mobile Device center is used with 7 so I hope my question is related....
Using Windows Mobile 5
Device is a Symbol MC70
Basically, we use Windows 7 and the Windows Mobile Device Center to connect the phone to the computer. Within that application, users can open up file management and delete files under the Application partition of the phone. Is there any way to lock down user access to the filesystem or certain files/folders within the Mobile Device Center while leaving Activesync enabled? We need it to be able to connect to our web app service so disabling activesync is not an option. Only idea I have for now is to hide the specific folders. Let me know if you need more information!
Dear Team
I am developing an application for Windows RT device. I have a requirement to programmatically lock
the device screen. I tried to log off with a solution posted in this link
to open the "cmd" prompt, but the cmd prompt executes within the sandbox of winrt and hence "shutdown /l" failed to execute due to
access denied(5).It is mentioned in the forum to give "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" => FULL CONTROL. But in vain. Therefore I need solution either to lock the screen or open cmd prompt with required access.
with thanks

Is this for a Win32 application that is compiled for ARM, or for a Windows Store application?
Windows Store applications don't have access to those APIs, which means anything that you run, runs in the same sandbox, and also doesn't have access (as you've noticed).
The only way to work around I think is to provide a separate lock screen inside your application. But it of course depends a bit on how you want to use it. If the goal is just to lock access to info in the app, that will work fine, but if you really need to lock the entire device, then I don't know...
