MSWord start-up time - how to reduce?? - General Questions and Answers

Hello. Using TP2 with WM 6.5. This situation is present in all Word releases : when it starts it scans for something until that blue bar fills up.
How can we stop that? is there any registry tweak??
Thanks

It's scanning your device for all *.doc* files AFAIK. Then it can ask you what you want to open. It shouldn't do this if you open files directly.
Also, have you tried Office 2010 Beta (available from the Marketplace).

It doing that when opening a file. When starting the app it does not.
Any ideeas?

Somehow lost my bootscreen

I don't know what I did, but instead of the Windows Mobile bootscreen (the one that comes after the first bootscreen with version numbers on it) I just get a completely white screen. Still loads into WM5 fine tough. Now how can I get my nice Windows Mobile bootscreen back?
Hmm, from what I've seen on this forum, the WM splash comes from a ROM file called welcome96.png (under windows).
It is possible to overwrite this file but that would take some effort (you must use a cab, or total commander).
Could some app you installed recently have messed with the file?
I just installed the pRSSreader beta2 prior to noticing the error, so it may be that, but I'm not sure.
//EDIT:
I uninstalled it and I got my bootscreen back.
Thought of another possibility:
Does this program add anything to startup/init?
Maybe it somehow jams the startup process (takes up all the CPU cycles?) and prevents windows from displaying the splash?
I think you should look for some kind of app (sorry don't know any my self) that can launch other programs on schedule, lets say a sec or two after the device is fully up. That will solve your other problem as well (the one with unknown file on startup)

WM6 Windows Update - files & settings required?

Now I know Windows Update on WM6 doesn't work for the Wizard - It connects to the m$ update site but doesn't find any updates. I tested this previously with the MB ROM and used a sniffer to see what was going on and it does indeed connect to the windows update site using HTTP.
In Faria's WM6 ROM he has removed Windows Update by physically removing some files from the ROM and deleting some registry settings as well as commenting out a line in the 'initflashfiles.dat' file. I have attempted to re-add Windows Update to his ROM with some sucess, however I am not quite there yet....
I have restored 'autoupdate.exe' and 'AutoUpdateRes_wpc.exe.0409.mui' as well as a registry setting [HKLM\System\Autoupdate] and it's settings and uncommented the line in the 'initflashfiles.dat' file to add the shortcut back. Now Windows Update is available and when I open it it opens OK but fails to connect when I select update now. It then sort of hangs and can only be closed using Task Manager or similar.
Are there any other files or settings that need restoring to get this back. I understand it doesn't work but my curiosity is getting the better of me
Thanks
Andy
I thought I read (maybe here) that when someone did the update, they actually had a theme file that was available and it downloaded that.
No packets sent?
I have been playing around with the Windows Update application and it starts fine. If I select 'Check Now' it immediately comes back with the Error screen telling me 'connection to update server was not available....'. If I click OK and then attempt to end the application it just stays on the screen and the only way to stop it is to use Task Manager and terminate the process
I have also put a sniffer on the port my Wireless AP connects to and cannot see the Wizard transmit anything when I click select 'Update Now' (I have verified I can access the internet with IE and I can see this OK with the sniffer).
Does anyone know what I am missing to at least get the Autoupdate.exe application to attempt to connect as it did with the MB ROM?
Thanks
Andy
Anyone
Can I bump this up as I want to get this working and re-added to my ROM (I know it doesn't actually work but I would like the functionality restored anyway).
I have restored the files:
autoupdate.lnk
autoupdate.exe
AutoUpdateRes_wpc.exe.0409.mui
Added the registry settings:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Autoupdate]
"DetectionCookie"="0"
"IntervalEndTime"=dword:f0
"IntervalStartTime"=dword:3c
"OmaDmSessionTimeout"=dword:258
"NextRunNormalInterval"=dword:93a80
"Automatic"=dword:0
"OTA"=dword:0
And restored the line to the initflashfiles.dat:
Directory("\Windows\Start Menu\Programs"):-File("Windows Update.lnk","\Windows\autoupdate.lnk")
There must be something else I am missing as it never attempts to connect and hangs when trying to exit the application. I restored the files from the MB ROM to Faria's ROM as he didn't include the originals.
Thanks
Andy
I would very cautious about re-adding windows update to a beta evaluation ROM (all our WM6 roms are!!!!).
It will do no good, only harm, I think, since Windows Update as well as a few other components in these beta WM6 are actually there only to call home and manage the beta evaluation.
My position of this is that you want to remove as much as possible all these pieces of software, essentially to avoid the call-home feature and the ROM expiration process, without breaking the ROM, of course.
So, I recomment to leave Windows Update out, SQM and other modules, ceipui, the remote provisioning mechanisms, etc. I've already talked about this in diffent threads, but I'll try to post a summary of my findings in the short future.
Regards,
--eluth.
I understand and accept the implications but I would prefer it if this was restored to my ROM.
I am just after some help as to what I am missing to restore this functionality
I have listed what files and settings I have restored but AutoUpdate is obviously missing something based on it's behaviour.
Anyone?
Anyone?
Anyone know what I am missing? Surely some of the cookers on here who have removed the Windows Update from their ROMs know what they removed?
That's all I am after; not too big a task I assume?
Andy
ADB100,
I could not tell you what is missing, but I do know that it is enabled in mUn's ROM. Because I did the same as you. Hooked it up to a sniffer and looked at the packet exchange between my Wizard and the MS update site..

It's enabled in the original Orwells, the MB Edition, mUn's and Faria's Vanilla WM6.
However I still can't find what I am missing to get it back in my re-heat of Faria's latest 'Real Thing'.....
Andy
you are missing SQM .
ps;
there is WM6 ROM for a windows ppc that has time bomb....plus microsoft can expire your rom by update if they want.... the update feature uses .pkg and this settings will stay after hard reset.... so they can use it for any means,and so can anyone that can compile 1 of those packages. just to let you know.

All the SQM files are present and the SQM settings in the registry are identical
What else could be missing?
Also, Which rom as the timebomb and how do we find it?

autoupdate.exe' and 'AutoUpdateRes_wpc.exe.0409.mui'?
Thanks
I don't have it handy, but go find the original Ingenetics dump that was posted here (do a search) and I know it has those files in it.
Andy,
The original dump by Ingenetics was pulled a few days after he posted it. But I think this link has it. Good luck on your quest.

vista and the pda connection

I think that you can help me. I installed the wmdc and connected my htc kaiser, but when the connection is established, my notebook doesen't show the green dialogue you can see here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx
I got a simple windows dialogue "automatic ...." with the general options to open a explorer window, play a dvd, ..... and so on.
what went wrong, that I dindn't get the beautiful green window.
when I tried to install a program via this connection, an error message told me, that windows mobile device center ist not installed correctly. and really, shortly before installation is through, it "runs back" .... but a wmdc control box shows an active connection ... I use the original microsoft installation file .... do anyone have the same problems or could help me solve it.
please dont be angry about reading this here. I simple doesn't know a better place, if you do ... please let me know ...
have you tried opening windows mobile device center from the shortcut in all programs to see if it runs, the icon by the clock is just the sync manager.
Make sure you have installed all available updates from microsoft and if you still cant open it from all programs then try downloading it from the microsoft site again. As you might of got a corrupt file during download.
I have downloaded the file during testing for many times. the name of the file: drvupdate-x86.exe
vista is updated with all the available updates.
which shortcut do you mean .... can you post an example for opening?
now I know: the installation process failes, but without prompting an specific error message. shortly before installation is complete (last milimeter of progress bar), the installation progress goes backward an deletes all, what was installed before.
the latest file I got from the microsoft page with the header windows mobile device center 6.1 is the driveupdate-x86.exe with version 6.0.5824.16387.
is this the latest one? if not: where do I get the latest one?
do anyone have/had the same probleme and/or knows, how to solve it?

put lock on manila 2d

need help whot manila!
i got update 19b (for non htc devices) because i got a chinesse phone, Daxian x999 runing windows mobile 6
i was looking how to lock the put the original windows lock app on the right soft key of the manila pls help me
i know there are difernet apps for locking and there is also this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446689

In Use 51.83MB

Program
Total: 45.71MB
In use 26.07 Mb
Free: 19.01 (22 when it boots i belive)
thanks
There's a couple problems in doing this as I see it...
First, Changing the Soft Keys when using the WinMo interface (NOT Manila/TouchFlo) requires a registry Hack. I'm assuming that there's prolly a different registry setting somewhere to change what Manilla sets the SoftKeys to, but you'd have to find that first. Maybe someone who is more familiar with the Manilla interface and where registry/settings are, could give you that info...
Secondly, I don't believe (or at least know of) an Executable app that Locks the device. I believe the built-in "Device Lock" functionality is calling a DLL or running service/exe or something, but I don't know of an EXE in the windows directory that you can click on to lock your device. Another post I read mentioned something of a "lock.exe" file in the \Windows\ directory but I believe that was a reference to a 3rd party app since I do not have/see that file. Again someone with more knowledge - please feel free to step in and correct/inform.
in light of those two problems I would recommend using the built-in (or at least built-in on my phone - Fuze w/ WinMo) "Long Press End Key" option found in Start > Settings > System which can be set to lock the device when the "end" key is held down. This option may or may not exist on your phone... I am not sure if it's just something HTC included on mine, or what.
I hope this helps a little bit, or someone else can be of better assistance.
found it
thnaks for ur answer i found it de devicelock is hidden in windows right now i cant remember if its a.exe or what but its named devicelock.
i sold that phone to a friend and now i got an opal, its funny because i found my own q while looking for the same app

IGO 8 on WM6.5 "Polaris"... Problem!

Hi All...
I'm using WM6.5 on my polaris "Touch Cruise", and it is good:
(Really there aren't any differences between it and 6.1 except some new updates like:
1- Background in "Strat Menu".
2- GFX Booster.
3- New animations, Icons and Indicators.
4- Some new programs.)
so I tried to run IGO 8 and it worked well.
after a while (A few days), I ran it... it started normally, appeared the usual blue screen with IGO 8 Logo and started to load its components (Loading POIs, Data, User Settings, Mainscreen Load) then (Starting)... at this moment it lag and do not respond any more (Although I haven't changed any settings in it...)
It seems that by time the system has build some kind of files (Or maybe lost it) that prevents the IGO 8 from running normally....
Please Help ...
Thanks in Advance!!
wow...i don't have problem at all using iGo8 till now, it run smooth, and i'm also using megan rom wwe winmo 6.5
igo has a few config files that are updated as you use the program. It may happen that the program freezes the device and ofter this ends up with corrupted config files. Is a good practice to keep back up of the config files (voices, zoom options, backlight options, etc). To restore you can simply delete those files and they will be created with default values next time you launch the program.
do not ask me for the filenames since my device does not freeze that often but if you do some search with google will find for sure.
